To set up Titan professional email on a Squarespace domain, first find out where that domain’s DNS is managed. If Squarespace manages the DNS, you can either buy Essential Email by Titan through Squarespace, use Squarespace’s Titan Email preset for an existing Titan account, or enter Titan’s current records manually. If the domain uses Squarespace DNS Connect, make the changes at the third-party registrar instead. Titan hosts the mailbox; Squarespace provides the integrated purchase, billing, and DNS setup path.
Understand which service does what
A custom address such as you@yourdomain.com involves several separate services. Keeping their roles distinct prevents the most common setup mistake: changing website records and accidentally interrupting mail delivery.
| Function | What it means in this setup |
|---|---|
| Website hosting | Squarespace hosts the site itself. |
| Domain registration | The domain may be registered with Squarespace or with another registrar. |
| DNS hosting | The provider whose DNS panel contains the domain’s A, CNAME, MX, TXT, and related records. |
| Mailbox hosting | Titan stores and serves the email mailbox. Squarespace does not host the mailbox. |
| Email billing | When Titan is purchased through Squarespace, Squarespace handles billing for that integrated plan. |
Squarespace’s own explanation is that “Your email is always hosted externally, even though your site is hosted by Squarespace.” Connecting a domain to a Squarespace website therefore does not, by itself, move email to Squarespace.
Before you begin
Have these items ready before changing anything:
- Administrator access to the Squarespace account and the domain registrar or DNS provider.
- The exact domain you want to use for Titan.
- Access to the Titan account if it was purchased outside Squarespace.
- A record of any existing email service and its current MX records.
- The mailbox address or addresses you intend to create.
- Titan’s current setup instructions if you will add records manually.
Do not copy MX, SPF, DKIM, or other values from an unrelated tutorial. Record values can differ by service, account, and current provider instructions.

Find where your domain’s DNS is managed
The correct editing screen depends on how the domain is connected to Squarespace.
Squarespace-registered domain or Nameserver Connect
For a domain registered with Squarespace, DNS records are managed in Squarespace. The same is true when the domain uses Nameserver Connect, where the domain’s nameservers point to Squarespace. In these cases, use the domain’s DNS panel in Squarespace for a preset or manual records.
DNS Connect domain
With DNS Connect, the domain remains connected through the third-party registrar’s DNS. Squarespace can display the connection, but the registrar or DNS provider remains the place where records are edited. If you cannot find the expected DNS controls in Squarespace, sign in to that provider instead.
How to confirm the arrangement
- Open Squarespace and go to the domain’s management area.
- Select the domain and open its DNS settings if that option is available.
- If Squarespace lets you add or edit records, it is the active DNS manager for this connection.
- If the domain is marked as connected through DNS Connect, open the registrar or DNS host’s DNS manager and make changes there.
Editing records in the wrong account will not change the live DNS, even if the entry appears to save successfully.
Option 1: Buy Essential Email by Titan through Squarespace
This is the most automated route when you do not already have a Titan account. Squarespace says it adds Titan’s MX records automatically when you create the account through its custom email setup. Its Titan setup also adds SPF and DMARC automatically, while Titan provides the DKIM instructions.
- Sign in to Squarespace and open the site or domain associated with the address you want to use.
- Open the custom email or professional email setup flow.
- Choose Essential Email by Titan for the domain.
- Complete the account and mailbox details requested by Squarespace.
- Finish the purchase and account creation steps.
- Allow the integrated setup to add Titan’s MX records automatically.
- Use the Titan email interface to sign in to the new mailbox and complete any account-specific prompts.
In this route, Squarespace is the billing and setup point, but Titan remains the mailbox host. You do not need to manually enter Titan MX records when the account is created through Squarespace’s integrated flow.
What is configured automatically
- MX: Squarespace adds Titan’s mail-routing records during account creation.
- SPF and DMARC: Squarespace states these are added automatically for its Titan setup.
- DKIM: Follow Titan’s current DKIM guidance for the account. Do not substitute values from another domain or provider.
Option 2: Add an existing Titan account with the Squarespace preset
Use this route when Titan was purchased separately and you want Squarespace to add the supported record set for a domain whose DNS is managed by Squarespace or uses Nameserver Connect.

- Open Domains.
- Select the domain you want to configure.
- Open DNS.
- Select Add preset.
- Choose Titan Email.
- Complete any reauthentication prompt shown by Squarespace.
- Add or apply the preset.
After the preset is applied, finish any account-side verification requested by Titan. The preset is not the right editing location for a DNS Connect domain; use the third-party provider’s DNS manager in that case.
When the preset is unavailable
A missing Titan Email preset usually means one of the supported DNS conditions is not met. Confirm that the domain is Squarespace-managed or connected with Nameserver Connect. If it is connected through DNS Connect, or if another arrangement keeps DNS at the registrar, enter the records there instead. You can also use manual records when the preset does not match your account.
Option 3: Add Titan records manually
Manual configuration is appropriate when the preset is unavailable, you need to preserve a particular DNS arrangement, or Titan specifically instructs you to add individual records.
Get the authoritative values first
Sign in to Titan and open the current setup or domain-verification instructions for your account. Obtain the exact MX hosts and priorities, plus any TXT or CNAME values Titan gives you for SPF, DKIM, verification, or related authentication. The correct values are account- and service-specific, so they should come directly from Titan’s live instructions.

Enter the records in the active DNS manager
- Open the DNS manager for the domain: Squarespace for a Squarespace-managed or Nameserver Connect domain, or the registrar/provider for a DNS Connect domain.
- Choose the option to add a custom record.
- Select the record type Titan specifies, such as MX, TXT, or CNAME.
- Enter the host or name exactly as Titan displays it.
- For an MX record, enter the mail server and its priority exactly as supplied.
- Save the record, then add each additional Titan-supplied record.
- Remove or change an old mail record only when you are intentionally migrating away from the existing provider and have coordinated that change.
Squarespace’s manual DNS interface uses custom records and asks for the record type, host or name, priority where applicable, and mail server. A TXT value used for SPF or a CNAME value used for DKIM must be entered exactly; punctuation, quotation handling, and host names matter.

Do not invent authentication records
Never reuse an SPF or DKIM record from another domain, paste a record from a different mail provider, or create an MX host based on a guess. If Titan’s instructions change, update the live DNS to match those current instructions. Multiple unrelated SPF records can also create an invalid SPF policy, so coordinate any existing SPF entry with Titan rather than blindly adding another one.
Connect the website without breaking existing email
Website records and mail-routing records have different jobs. A domain can point its website to Squarespace while continuing to send and receive mail through an existing provider.
If the domain and email provider already match
Connecting a third-party domain to a Squarespace site should not require changing MX records when the domain and its email provider are already configured correctly. Leave the working MX records in place while adding the website records requested by Squarespace.
If you are switching from another email provider
Changing MX records moves incoming mail routing. Coordinate the migration with the current provider and Titan before making the change. Keep a copy of the old records, confirm that mailboxes and aliases exist in Titan, and choose a cutover point agreed with the people who use the domain. Deleting working MX records merely to connect the website can interrupt delivery.

The safe separation to remember
- Website A or CNAME records control where the web address resolves.
- MX records control which service receives email.
- TXT and CNAME authentication records help receiving systems evaluate whether messages are authorized.
Change only the record type required for the task. A website connection is not a reason to remove mail records.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify Titan after the DNS change
Verification should test both routing and authentication rather than relying only on a saved DNS screen.
- In Titan, confirm that the domain and mailbox show as configured or verified.
- Send a message from the new Titan address to an address at another provider.
- Reply to the message and confirm that the reply reaches the Titan mailbox.
- Send a message into Titan from an outside account and check that it arrives in the intended mailbox.
- Inspect the message’s authentication results in the receiving service when available.
- Compare the live MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records with Titan’s current instructions.
A successful website connection does not prove that mail is configured, and a mailbox that opens does not prove that every authentication record is correct. Check both directions of delivery and the records visible on the live DNS service.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No DNS controls or no Titan preset in Squarespace | The domain uses DNS Connect or another arrangement in which DNS remains elsewhere. | Identify the registrar or DNS host and add the preset or records there. A preset is supported for Squarespace-managed and Nameserver Connect domains. |
| Mail stopped after the website was connected | MX records were deleted or replaced during the site connection. | Inspect the live MX records first. Restore the intended provider’s records or complete the planned migration with the current provider and Titan. |
| Incoming mail reaches the old provider | The old MX records are still authoritative. | Confirm which DNS service is authoritative, then follow Titan’s current MX instructions if you are migrating. |
| Outgoing mail is rejected or goes to spam | SPF, DKIM, or DMARC is missing, duplicated, or incorrect. | Compare the live records with Titan’s current instructions. Squarespace says SPF and DMARC are automatic for its integrated Titan setup; use Titan’s DKIM guidance. |
| A record appears saved but has no effect | It was entered in a non-authoritative DNS panel. | Move the change to the provider that actually hosts DNS for the domain. |
| Squarespace asks for reauthentication while adding the preset | The account needs to be reauthenticated before the DNS action can complete. | Complete the prompt, then return to DNS and apply the Titan Email preset. |
| You do not know which value belongs in a field | The provider’s current record instructions were not consulted. | Stop and retrieve the exact host, value, priority, and record type from Titan. Do not guess. |
Who supports which part of the setup?
Squarespace can show where DNS records are entered and can manage the integrated Titan purchase. Titan is the source for the mailbox’s technical record values, account verification, DKIM instructions, and mail-service behavior. If a record value or delivery result is unclear, provide the email provider with the domain, the record currently published, and the error message rather than changing unrelated website records.
Choosing an alternative when Titan is not the right route
Squarespace lists Titan and Google Workspace as integrated options and also provides presets for Fastmail, Proton Mail, Neo, iCloud, and Zoho Mail. The setup decision should be based on where you want billing handled, which mailbox and calendar interface your users need, which provider supports your domain, and whether a preset is available for your DNS arrangement. The available information does not establish a current price or feature winner among these providers, so do not choose on an assumed cheapest or best label.
Quick Recap
| Decision factor | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Billing location | Do you want an integrated Squarespace purchase or a separate provider account? |
| DNS location | Can the provider’s preset be applied where your DNS is actually managed? |
| Mailbox experience | Does the provider’s web and mobile interface suit the people using the address? |
| Support path | Will Squarespace or the email provider handle account and delivery questions? |
| Migration risk | Are you replacing an existing provider, or simply adding a website without changing MX records? |
Practical checklist
- Identify whether DNS is managed by Squarespace, Nameserver Connect, or a third-party provider through DNS Connect.
- Decide whether Titan will be purchased through Squarespace or is an existing external account.
- Use the integrated setup or Titan Email preset when the domain arrangement supports it.
- For manual setup, copy current Titan MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC instructions exactly.
- Keep existing MX records when connecting only the website.
- Coordinate any MX change with the current provider when migrating mail.
- Test incoming and outgoing messages after configuration.
- Check live authentication records if messages are rejected or filtered as spam.
