Connect the PS5 or Xbox directly to a suitable TCL P8L HDMI input, select that input, and verify the signal reported by both devices. TCL advertises a 144 Hz native panel and a 4K 144 Hz signal path, while its 288 Hz VRR Game Accelerator claim applies specifically to HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. Consoles normally require the exact high-bandwidth port, a suitable cable, compatible game support and correctly configured console settings; the television’s headline refresh rate alone does not guarantee 4K at 120 Hz.
What the TCL P8L can deliver
TCL’s current global P8L product page and the UK 55P8L page describe several gaming specifications. They are manufacturer-published claims, not independent laboratory measurements, and the exact ports and menus can vary by regional model and screen size.
| Feature | TCL-published claim | What it means for console gaming | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native refresh rate | 144 Hz | The panel can refresh faster than the 60 Hz used by many console games, leaving headroom for supported 120 Hz modes. | This is the television’s capability, not a promise that every game will render at 144 Hz. |
| Signal path | 4K 144 Hz | The set is advertised as accepting a 4K signal at up to 144 Hz. | Use the input identified in the local manual for the required high-bandwidth mode. |
| VRR Game Accelerator | 288 Hz through HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 | Those two inputs are the ones TCL explicitly associates with the 288 Hz feature. | 288 Hz is not the expected output of a PS5 or Xbox game. Do not generalize the claim to every input. |
| Screen sizes on TCL’s global page | 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches | The same P8L name covers several sizes. | Port availability and labeling still need to be confirmed for the exact regional model. |
| Gamebar | TCL describes gaming-oriented screen designs for major console types. | A Gamebar may expose gaming status or controls while you play. | The reviewed product pages do not establish one universal remote sequence or identical controls on every P8L variant. |
The practical target for a current console is usually 4K at 120 Hz, with variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency switching (ALLM) when the console, game and television all support them. Treat 144 Hz and 288 Hz as television-side capability figures rather than as rates a console will automatically use.
Prepare the P8L before connecting a console
Identify the exact regional model
Check the model number on the television label, packaging or system information, then open the manual for that specific region and size. TCL’s global page covers multiple sizes, while the UK page is labeled 55P8L; neither page supplies a complete size-by-size, country-by-country HDMI mode table. The manual is therefore the authority for which input supports the mode you want and for the names of gaming settings on your television.

Use a direct HDMI connection
Connect the console straight to the television rather than routing it through an AV receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device during initial setup. An intermediary can limit bandwidth or alter the signal-handshake information used to negotiate 4K, 120 Hz or VRR. Once direct operation is confirmed, add other equipment one item at a time if you need it.
Choose the cable supplied with the console first
For a PS5, Sony recommends starting with the HDMI cable supplied with the console. If that cable is unavailable or a replacement is needed, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable explicitly rated for 4K 120 Hz. A cable that merely fits the connector is not evidence that it can carry the desired mode reliably.
Update the television
Install any firmware update offered by the P8L before diagnosing a high-refresh-rate problem. Sony specifically includes television firmware among the checks for a PS5 that cannot maintain 4K 120 Hz. Record the current firmware version and the exact input used so you can tell whether a later change solved the problem.

Set up a PS5 on the TCL P8L
- Connect the hardware. Plug the PS5 directly into the P8L input that the local manual identifies for the required high-bandwidth signal. Use the PS5’s included HDMI cable initially.
- Select the television input. On the TCL remote, switch to the HDMI input occupied by the PS5. The console must be connected to the input you are actually viewing; selecting a different HDMI socket can make a working console appear to have no signal.
- Open the PS5 video controls. On the console, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. This page shows information about the connected HDMI device and the current output signal.
- Set the resolution. Leave Resolution on Automatic for normal operation. If you are troubleshooting a 4K mode, Sony also advises selecting 2160p as a diagnostic setting. Recheck the reported signal after changing it.
- Enable 120 Hz for supported games. Set 120 Hz Output to the enabled option when the display and game support it. This setting makes 120 Hz available; it cannot force a title that only supports 60 Hz to render at 120 Hz.
- Configure VRR. Enable VRR when the television and the game both support it. Sony notes that VRR results can vary by television, so judge the result from the signal information and actual game behavior rather than assuming that an enabled switch guarantees VRR in every title.
- Configure ALLM. In the same Video Output area, set ALLM according to your preference and the P8L’s documented support. Sony explains that a compatible television can switch to a low-latency mode while gaming; VRR output can also trigger low-latency behavior. Confirm the P8L’s exact ALLM wording in its manual.
- Test an appropriate game. Launch a game that explicitly supports a 120 Hz mode if 120 Hz is your target. Check the PS5’s Video Output information again after the game starts. A menu or a 60 Hz title may report a different rate from a supported performance mode.
What a successful PS5 check looks like
The PS5 should identify the P8L as the connected HDMI display, show a 4K-capable resolution when the configuration permits it, and report a 120 Hz signal when a compatible game is running in its 120 Hz mode. The exact on-screen wording can differ with firmware and region. The important distinction is between the television’s advertised maximum and the signal actually negotiated at that moment.
Sony’s official guide states: "The PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output." That describes PS5 capability, not a guarantee that every television input, cable, intermediary or game will deliver the mode.

Work through these checks in order. Change one variable at a time, then inspect the Video Output page again so you know which change had an effect.

| Symptom | Checks to make | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 shows 1080p at 120 Hz instead of 4K at 120 Hz | Confirm that the P8L input is the one documented for the required high-bandwidth mode; verify the cable, direct connection, television firmware and PS5 resolution. | Use the appropriate P8L input, the supplied PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI replacement, connect directly, update the TV, and set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p. |
| No image appears when 4K 120 Hz is selected | Check whether the television supports the target mode on that input, whether another device is in the signal path, and whether the cable is rated for 4K 120 Hz. | Move the console to the documented input, bypass intermediate equipment, use the supplied or suitably rated cable, and return the PS5 resolution to Automatic or 2160p. |
| The image flickers or repeatedly drops out | Inspect the cable seating and rating, direct connection and television firmware. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic first. | If the problem persists, Sony identifies Video Transfer Rate settings of -1 or -2 as diagnostic options. Use them only to investigate instability, because they limit some 4K 120 Hz output options. |
| 120 Hz is unavailable in one game | Check whether that title supports a 120 Hz mode and whether its own performance or graphics option must be selected. | Enable the game’s supported performance mode if offered. Do not treat the P8L’s 144 Hz specification as proof that every game has a 120 Hz option. |
| VRR or low-latency behavior is missing | Check VRR and ALLM settings on the PS5, the P8L manual and the game’s support. Confirm the signal while the game is running. | Enable only features supported by both ends of the connection. Sony notes that VRR behavior varies by TV and that ALLM support should be confirmed in the television manual. |
Why Video Transfer Rate should not be your first performance setting
Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic during normal setup. Sony notes that changing it to -1 or -2 limits certain 4K 120 Hz output choices. Those values can be useful as a diagnostic trade-off when a signal is unstable, but they are not an upgrade and should not be used as the default way to obtain 4K 120 Hz.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a replacement cable is justified
Do not buy a new cable merely because the P8L advertises 144 Hz. Replace the cable after confirming the correct input, direct connection, firmware and console settings, or when the supplied cable is missing, damaged or unable to maintain the signal. The replacement should be clearly identified as an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz. If a new cable changes nothing, restore the original cable and continue checking the input and settings rather than assuming the cable was the only cause.
Set up an Xbox Series X or Series S
The same physical principles apply: connect the Xbox directly to the P8L, select the corresponding HDMI input, and verify the signal reported by the television and console. Use the input identified by the exact P8L manual for the high-bandwidth mode you want, because the reviewed TCL pages do not establish a complete regional port matrix.

- Connect the Xbox directly to the selected P8L HDMI input with the cable supplied with the console or another cable whose specifications are documented for the target signal.
- Select that HDMI input on the television and confirm that the console is displaying an image before adding a receiver, switch or soundbar.
- Open the current Xbox display and video guidance on the console and inspect the detected television capabilities. The exact menu labels and sequence can change with Xbox system software, so use the instructions shown by the current console rather than relying on an unverified P8L-specific path.
- Check the signal while a compatible game is running. A television feature alone does not guarantee that an Xbox title will output 4K at 120 Hz or use VRR; the console, display connection and game must all support the selected mode.
- If the signal is unstable, return to a direct connection, verify the P8L input and cable, and update the television before changing several console options at once.
Official Xbox-specific menu instructions, a verified Series X|S 4K 120 Hz sequence and a complete P8L Xbox diagnostics path are not established here. Avoid treating a generic Xbox setting sequence from another television as authoritative for this model. The local P8L manual and the current Xbox on-console help are the appropriate references for the exact labels available in your region and software version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between P8L inputs and advertised refresh rates
TCL explicitly says, "288 VRR Game Accelerator is achievable via HDMI 1 and 2 ports." That statement makes HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 the documented inputs for that particular television feature, but it does not prove that every regional P8L exposes identical bandwidth or that a console will output 288 Hz. For console setup, follow the local manual’s port description and verify the negotiated signal instead of choosing a socket solely by its number.

Best Value
- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
- 144 Hz native: the panel’s advertised maximum refresh capability.
- 4K 144 Hz signal path: the maximum 4K signal rate TCL advertises for the television’s signal path.
- 288 Hz VRR Game Accelerator: TCL’s gaming feature claim for HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, not a normal PS5 or Xbox output rate.
- 4K 120 Hz console mode: a negotiated output that also depends on the console, game, cable, input and settings.
Keeping those figures separate prevents a common mistake: seeing 144 Hz or 288 Hz in the television specifications and expecting every console menu, dashboard and game to report the same number.
Using the TCL Gamebar without assuming a universal menu path
TCL presents the P8L with a Gamebar and says it provides screen designs for major console types. The reviewed product information does not give a stable remote-control sequence or guarantee that every regional variant exposes the same controls. Open the Gamebar only through the path shown in your P8L manual or on-screen help, and record the labels you see before changing a setting.
Use the Gamebar as a status aid rather than as proof of performance. A displayed refresh number should agree with the console’s reported output and the game’s selected mode. If the two disagree, trust the documented console signal information and investigate the input, cable and game support before changing unrelated picture settings.

- The exact P8L model, screen size and regional manual have been identified.
- The console is connected directly to the documented high-bandwidth HDMI input.
- The television is displaying the HDMI input used by the console.
- The supplied console cable, or a replacement explicitly rated for 4K 120 Hz, is firmly connected.
- P8L firmware is current.
- PS5 users have checked Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, including connected-device details, Resolution, 120 Hz Output, VRR, ALLM and Video Transfer Rate.
- The test game actually supports the desired 120 Hz or VRR mode.
- The signal has been rechecked after entering the game, not only from the console dashboard.
- Any receiver, switch, soundbar or capture device has been removed until direct operation is confirmed.
Limits you should expect from this setup
The P8L’s published specifications establish what the television is designed to accept, but they do not establish an independent console test result. No independent measurement is supplied for input latency, sustained VRR range or actual 4K 120 Hz behavior on every P8L size and region. The reliable way to resolve a discrepancy is to identify the exact model, use the documented input and cable, inspect the console’s reported signal and test a game that supports the mode you are asking it to produce.
