Set up the BRAVIA Theatre Trio (model HT-A8), then add the BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 pair (SA-RS9) and BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9) through the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app. Sony requires the app for installation and optional-speaker setup; generic Bluetooth pairing is not a substitute. Before buying or promising that all three products will work together, check Sony’s current compatibility list for your exact model combination and region, because the available official material does not confirm the HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 combination in every market.
The reliable sequence is: update the HT-A8 and BRAVIA Connect, complete the Trio’s initial installation in the app, add each compatible wireless accessory when prompted, place the Rear 9 units behind the listening position at approximately ear height, position the Sub 9 where it suits the room, and confirm that the app reports both accessories as connected.
What you need before starting
Identify the equipment by its model number. The Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio is HT-A8. The optional rear-channel pair is BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9, model SA-RS9, and the optional bass speaker is BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9, model SA-SW9. The Rear 9 and Sub 9 are wireless accessories, but wireless does not mean they can be connected to any soundbar or home-theater system.

Confirm regional compatibility first
Sony states that Rear 9 and Sub 9 accessories work only with specific main-device models. Compatibility can vary by product market, firmware and the current support list. The official setup guidance establishes that HT-A8 uses BRAVIA Connect and that both accessories use the app workflow with compatible main devices; it does not, by itself, establish that the three-device combination is offered in every region.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open Sony’s current compatibility information and check all three model numbers for your country or sales region before purchasing. If the app does not offer an accessory for the HT-A8, do not force the connection with an unrelated pairing procedure. A missing option can mean that the combination is not supported in that region, not that you have found the wrong Bluetooth menu.
Prepare power and network access
- Place the HT-A8, both Rear 9 units and the Sub 9 where each can reach a mains outlet during setup and normal use.
- Have the phone or tablet that will run BRAVIA Connect available throughout installation.
- Keep the accessories close enough to the main system for their first wireless connection, with as few physical obstacles as practical.
- Remove packaging and make sure every unit is switched on before attempting to add it in the app.
Why the BRAVIA Connect app is mandatory
The HT-A8 Help Guide explicitly instructs owners to use the app for installation and setup, including when optional speakers are connected: “Be sure to use the app to install and set up, even when connecting optional speakers.” Sony’s Rear 9 and Sub 9 guides give the same basic direction for a BRAVIA Connect-compatible main device: start in the app and follow its on-screen instructions.
In practice, the app is the control path that identifies the HT-A8, applies the supported accessory workflow and reports whether a wireless speaker has actually joined the system. A phone’s normal Bluetooth settings are not a replacement for that process. Do not try to pair the Rear 9 or Sub 9 as if either were a standalone Bluetooth speaker.

Sony recommends updating the HT-A8 system software and BRAVIA Connect to their latest available versions for current functions and performance. Sony’s Sub 9 guidance also notes that the system or subwoofer software may need an update before the connection can complete.

- Install or update Sony | BRAVIA Connect on your phone or tablet.
- Power on the HT-A8 and complete any system-software update the app or system requests.
- Leave the Rear 9 and Sub 9 powered on and ready for their own update prompts. If the app reports that an accessory must be updated, finish that update before retrying the connection.
- After an update, wait for each device to restart fully. Then reopen BRAVIA Connect rather than relying on an interrupted setup screen.
Menu names and prompts can change as Sony updates the app. Follow the labels shown for your version instead of assuming that an older screenshot or instruction uses the same wording.
Set up the HT-A8 and add the Rear 9 and Sub 9
Use this order even if the Trio is already playing audio. The initial installation establishes the main system; the accessory steps then use that installed system as their starting point.
1. Install the Trio in BRAVIA Connect
- Open BRAVIA Connect and begin the installation or setup flow for the BRAVIA Theatre Trio HT-A8.
- Follow the app’s instructions for the main system until it shows that the Trio has been installed.
- If the HT-A8 was previously configured, use the app’s add-device or equivalent device-management flow after confirming that BRAVIA Connect is current.
Do not skip the main-system setup and jump straight to the rear speakers. Sony’s optional-speaker guidance places initial setup first, followed by a software update and then accessory connection for applicable systems.
2. Add the Rear 9 pair
- With the HT-A8 installed and the two SA-RS9 units powered, choose the app’s option to add or connect optional wireless speakers.
- Select the Rear 9 option when it is offered and follow every on-screen instruction for the left and right units.
- Keep both rear speakers near the HT-A8 while the app establishes the link. Do not move them to their final positions until the app completes the connection.
- Wait for BRAVIA Connect to show a connected state for the pair. If only one unit appears, stop and resolve that connection before continuing.
The Rear 9 is a left/right rear-channel pair, not two independent front speakers. Assign and place the units according to the app’s prompts so the left and right channels are not physically reversed.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Add the Sub 9
- Power on the SA-SW9 and keep it close to the HT-A8 for the first attempt.
- In BRAVIA Connect, return to the optional wireless-speaker connection area and choose the subwoofer option offered for the installed system.
- Follow the app’s prompts until it reports that the Sub 9 is connected.
- Only after the connection is confirmed should you move the subwoofer to its intended room position.
Sony’s Sub 9 guide uses the same app-based workflow as the Rear 9 guide. If the subwoofer is not offered at all, first check the exact model and regional compatibility rather than trying a generic wireless or Bluetooth menu.
4. Confirm the complete system
Return to the app’s device or wireless-speaker status view and confirm that the HT-A8, both rear speakers and the Sub 9 are shown as connected. This status check matters: a speaker can be powered on without being linked to the Trio. Test ordinary playback only after the app reports the connection.
Place the Rear 9 speakers correctly
Sony recommends placing the Rear 9 units as a left/right pair behind the listening position and facing toward it. Aim for approximately ear height when seated. Keep the tops of the speakers clear; do not put either unit inside a shelf or immediately beneath a ceiling.

- Place the left unit behind and to the left of the main seat, and the right unit behind and to the right.
- Keep the two units at similar heights and roughly comparable distances from the listening position where the room allows.
- Make sure the speaker marked for the left channel is on the left side of the room, and the right-channel speaker is on the right.
- Leave the top surfaces unobstructed so the speakers are not enclosed by furniture or pressed against a ceiling.
The guidance specifies the relationship to the listener, not a universal distance. Room width, seating position and available power outlets determine the exact placement. If a unit must be close to a wall or furniture, preserve clear space above it and avoid burying it inside a cabinet.

Place the Sub 9 without losing the wireless link
The Sub 9 has a different job from the Rear 9: it supplies the system’s bass subwoofer role rather than a left or right rear channel. Place it where it fits the room and where its power cable can remain safely connected. There is no single location that is correct for every room.
For the first connection, keep the Sub 9 close to the HT-A8 and minimize walls, cabinets and other obstructions between them. After BRAVIA Connect confirms the link, move it to the position that works for your room. If the wireless connection becomes unstable after moving it, return to a closer position or reduce the obstacles between the subwoofer and the main system.
Rear 9 or Sub 9: what each accessory adds
These accessories solve different problems, so adding one does not make the other unnecessary.

| BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 | SA-SW9 | Bass subwoofer | Exact HT-A8 and regional compatibility; a practical powered location; app recognition of the subwoofer |
Sony’s setup material does not provide a measured performance improvement or guarantee a particular sound result from adding either accessory. Choose based on the role you want, the physical space available and whether BRAVIA Connect offers the accessory for your specific HT-A8 installation.

Troubleshoot connection problems
The app cannot find the HT-A8
- Confirm that the app is BRAVIA Connect and that it is updated.
- Power-cycle the HT-A8 and reopen the app.
- Restart the installation or add-device flow rather than attempting to pair through the phone’s generic Bluetooth settings.
- Check that the phone is close enough during setup and that the Trio has completed any requested software update.
The Rear 9 or Sub 9 is not offered in the app
Check the model numbers first: SA-RS9 is Rear 9 and SA-SW9 is Sub 9. Then check Sony’s current compatibility information for the exact country or region. Sony restricts these accessories to compatible main-device models. If the app does not present the accessory for the HT-A8, do not assume that changing a phone setting will make an unsupported combination work.
Pairing starts but does not finish
- Complete the HT-A8’s initial setup before connecting optional speakers.
- Update the HT-A8, BRAVIA Connect and any accessory software that the app identifies as out of date.
- Move the accessory close to the main system and clear obvious obstacles.
- Restart the speaker and repeat the app’s wireless-speaker connection procedure.
Sony’s general optional-speaker guidance and Sub 9 troubleshooting advice both point to this sequence. Keep the accessory near the Trio until the app reports a connected state.
The connection is unstable after successful setup
Return to the app’s wireless-speaker connection settings and inspect the affected device. Move it closer to the HT-A8 and reduce walls, furniture or other obstacles in the wireless path. If necessary, restart the speaker and attempt the connection again. Once stable, move the speaker incrementally toward its final position and recheck the app status.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →One Rear 9 unit works and the other does not
Stop playback testing and return to the Rear 9 connection flow. Verify that both units are powered, positioned near the HT-A8 during pairing and shown as a complete left/right pair in BRAVIA Connect. If the app still recognizes only one unit, restart both rear speakers and repeat the accessory setup rather than treating the working unit as a standalone speaker.
The app reports connected, but there is no audible rear or bass output
First verify the connection state again in BRAVIA Connect. A powered accessory is not necessarily linked. Check that the Rear 9 units are on the correct left and right sides and that the Sub 9 has not lost its wireless link after being moved. If the app no longer shows a connected state, use its wireless-speaker connection settings and reconnect before investigating playback or source settings.
When the three-device combination cannot be confirmed
The safest decision rule is simple: only proceed when Sony’s current compatibility information and BRAVIA Connect both support the exact HT-A8, SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 combination for your region. The available official setup guides establish the required app workflow, but they do not establish universal availability of that three-device combination. Regional product catalogs, software versions and support lists can change.
If you already own the equipment and the app does not offer one accessory, record the model numbers, software versions and region, then contact Sony support for a compatibility determination. Avoid unofficial adapters, unrelated pairing instructions or promises that a firmware update will add support; none of those outcomes is established by the setup guidance.
Quick Recap
After installation: a short verification checklist
- HT-A8 appears as the installed BRAVIA Theatre Trio in BRAVIA Connect.
- BRAVIA Connect is current, and the HT-A8 and accessories have completed required software updates.
- SA-RS9 is recognized as a left/right rear pair.
- SA-SW9 is recognized as the connected subwoofer.
- Rear speakers are behind the listening position, aimed toward it, near seated ear height and not enclosed or directly under a ceiling.
- The Sub 9 remains connected after being moved to its practical room position.
- Any later connection problem is handled through the app’s wireless-speaker connection settings, not generic Bluetooth pairing.
