For an accuracy-first setup, start with Filmmaker Mode, use the room-appropriate SDR brightness rather than copying a single number, leave HDR Tone Mapping on Static, enable Input Signal Plus and Game Mode for a console or PC, and route a soundbar or receiver through the TV’s HDMI eARC connection. The S90H can change menu labels by region and software version, so confirm the exact model and update it before adjusting anything.
Start by confirming the TV and software
Check the model name in the TV’s support or device-information screen and compare it with the model printed on the television or its packaging. Samsung’s S90H product page links a user manual identified as version 2603130, dated April 9, 2026. That manual is a useful reference for a current set, but regional firmware can change menu names, automatic behavior and which options appear. If a path below does not match your screen, use the Samsung support page for your region and the manual installed for your software version.
- Connect the TV to the internet, then open the software-update section in Settings and install any available update.
- Restart the TV after an update has finished. A restart ensures the picture, HDMI and audio menus are loaded from the same software state.
- Label the inputs before calibration if you have several devices. Use a clear name such as “PS5,” “Xbox” or “PC,” so you do not accidentally calibrate the wrong HDMI input.
Do your first adjustments under the lighting in which you normally watch. OLED brightness is not a universal preset: the value that tracks a 100-nit reference in a dark room can look too dim in daylight, while a brighter setting can be comfortable for casual viewing but less faithful to the source.

Choose a picture mode before changing individual controls
Filmmaker Mode is the best accuracy-first starting point for both SDR and HDR on the S90H. RTINGS selected it because it was the most accurate mode out of the box in its testing. It is designed to preserve the creator’s intended contrast, color and motion presentation rather than making every scene look brighter or more processed.

| Priority | Recommended starting point | What you give up or gain |
|---|---|---|
| Reference accuracy | Filmmaker Mode | More faithful brightness, color and film motion; may look less bright in a strongly lit room. |
| Brighter highlights in HDR | Filmmaker Mode with HDR Tone Mapping set to Active | Highlights look brighter, but the result moves beyond HDR reference intent. |
| Smoother motion | Filmmaker Mode with a small amount of Judder Reduction | Motion appears smoother, but film material can lose its original cadence. |
| Fast console or PC response | Game Mode | Samsung reduces picture processing to improve responsiveness; some processing features are unavailable. |
Change one control at a time and watch familiar content for several minutes. If you adjust many controls together, it becomes difficult to tell which change solved a problem or introduced one.
Set up SDR movies and television
Use the Filmmaker baseline
For standard-dynamic-range movies and TV, select Picture Mode: Filmmaker. RTINGS’ tested baseline was:
| Control | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | 45 | Sets the overall white level in the SDR picture. |
| Color | 25 | Sets color intensity. |
| Color Space | Auto | Lets the TV select the appropriate color gamut for the signal. |
| Gamma | 2.2 | Provides the tested SDR tonal curve. |
| Color Tone | Warm 2 | Moves white balance toward the warmer, reference-oriented presentation. |
These are starting points from RTINGS’ measurements, not a guarantee that every panel, room or source will look identical. Panel variation, ambient light and your eyesight can make a small adjustment reasonable.
Match SDR brightness to the room
RTINGS measured two accuracy-oriented SDR choices: Brightness 38 produced about 100 nits, while Brightness 90 produced about 200 nits. Treat those figures as calibration references from the test, not as universal “best” values.

- Dark-room reference: start at Brightness 38, corresponding to the 100-nit measurement.
- Moderately lit room: start at Brightness 90, corresponding to the 200-nit measurement.
- Bright-room comfort: turn Peak Brightness to High, then adjust Brightness until faces and shadow detail remain comfortable to watch without looking washed out.
Brightness and Peak Brightness solve different problems. Brightness changes the level of the SDR image; Peak Brightness changes how strongly the panel drives bright portions of the image. Increasing both indiscriminately can make a reference picture less accurate. If dark scenes look gray, lower the room light or return to the lower, accuracy-oriented setting before raising other controls.
Configure HDR10 correctly
Start HDR content and wait for the S90H to switch to its HDR picture settings. The television stores HDR adjustments separately from SDR, so changing an SDR value does not necessarily change the HDR version of that control.
RTINGS’ HDR baseline is:
| HDR control | Starting value | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Picture Mode | Filmmaker | Accuracy-first mode. |
| Contrast | 50 | Use the tested HDR starting point. |
| Color | 25 | Use the tested color intensity. |
| Color Space | Auto | Allow signal-appropriate gamut selection. |
| Color Tone | Warm 2 | Use the tested reference-oriented white point. |
| Brightness | 100 | HDR starts at the full tested brightness control. |
| Peak Brightness | High | Allows HDR highlights to reach the panel’s tested peak behavior. |
| HDR Tone Mapping | Static | Preserves the reference tone-mapping intent. |
Static versus Active tone mapping
Static is the accuracy choice. It follows the HDR reference more closely, which can make some mastered highlights appear less forceful than a showroom-style presentation. Choose Active only when you prefer visibly brighter highlights. RTINGS notes that Active boosts highlights beyond reference intent; it is a preference trade-off, not an objective upgrade.

A setting that makes a white reflection brighter can also change the balance of the whole image. Keep Static for film-accurate viewing, and use Active when room brightness or personal preference matters more than strict reference reproduction.

Decide how much motion processing to use
The S90H automatically removes judder from 24p and 25p content in RTINGS’ testing. That means you generally do not need to add interpolation merely to make movies play at their intended cadence.
- Film-like presentation: leave extra interpolation off and keep the motion controls at their neutral or default setting.
- Smoother movement: raise Judder Reduction gradually if you prefer smoother pans or sports motion.
- Avoid the “soap opera” look: if actors or camera moves look unnaturally fluid, lower Judder Reduction or return it to neutral.
Motion preference is subjective. There is no single Judder Reduction value that is correct for every viewer, and the setting can be remembered separately for different signal types or picture modes.
Set up PS5, Xbox or PC gaming
Samsung’s gaming path has two important parts: enable the expanded HDMI signal range for the input, then enable Game Mode. Game Mode removes or reduces picture processing to improve responsiveness. The TV may switch automatically when it detects a console, but PC gaming can require manual activation.

- Open Settings > General > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus.
- Enable Input Signal Plus for that specific HDMI input.
- Open Game Mode Settings and enable Game Mode.
- Start a game and confirm that the TV identifies the input as a game signal or otherwise shows Game Mode as active.
- If the TV does not switch automatically, select Game Mode manually. Samsung supports automatic switching for some detected consoles, and RTINGS reports that ALLM can switch the S90H into Game Mode; a PC may still need manual selection.
Input Signal Plus and Game Mode address different issues. Input Signal Plus improves compatibility with the console or PC signal on the chosen HDMI input. Game Mode reduces processing and therefore targets input response. Enabling one does not replace the other.

Choose responsiveness over processing
Use Game Mode when control response matters most. The trade-off is that processing intended for a cinematic picture may be reduced or unavailable. For a single-player game where response is less important, you can compare Game Mode with your preferred movie mode, but competitive play benefits from the lower-processing path.
If a console screen is blank or unstable after enabling Input Signal Plus, turn the option off for that input, reboot the console and TV, and then try again. Re-enable it only after the source displays reliably. This isolates an HDMI compatibility issue from a picture-mode issue without changing unrelated inputs.
Choose between TV speakers and an external system
| Audio path | Best for | Important limitation or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| TV speakers | Simple installation, no extra hardware and everyday viewing. | Sound comes from the television’s built-in speaker system. |
| HDMI ARC | Basic return audio to a compatible soundbar or receiver. | Requires the TV’s labeled ARC port, the speaker’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) port and Anynet+ enabled. |
| HDMI eARC | Original-resolution audio and formats such as Dolby Atmos. | Requires the TV’s HDMI eARC port, an eARC-compatible HDMI cable, Anynet+ and HDMI eARC Mode set to Auto. |
Samsung describes eARC as “Enhanced Audio Return Channel,” calling it “the next-generation of sound.” In Samsung’s documentation, eARC can send original-resolution audio and supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master, DTS:X and Dolby Atmos when the source and receiving equipment also support those formats.
Connect a soundbar or AV receiver through eARC
- Find the HDMI port on the S90H labeled eARC or ARC. Use that port rather than an ordinary HDMI input.
- Connect it to the soundbar or receiver port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) or its equivalent. Use an HDMI cable rated for eARC.
- On the TV, enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). This is Samsung’s HDMI control function and is required for ARC/eARC operation and control.
- Open Settings > Audio > Expert Settings > HDMI eARC Mode and select Auto.
- Open the TV’s Sound Output menu and select the connected HDMI receiver or soundbar.
- Set the soundbar or receiver’s input to its HDMI ARC/eARC input, then play content with a known surround or Atmos soundtrack.
Samsung’s ARC wiring instruction is specific: the TV’s HDMI ARC port connects to the speaker’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) port. A cable plugged into a different HDMI input can carry video but will not provide the return-audio path you are trying to configure.

What must be true for Dolby Atmos
- The TV and receiver or soundbar must be connected through the labeled ARC/eARC ports.
- Anynet+ must be enabled so the HDMI control and audio-return link can negotiate.
- HDMI eARC Mode must be set to Auto.
- The cable and receiving equipment must support eARC and the desired audio format.
- The program or game must actually contain a Dolby Atmos or other compatible soundtrack.
If any one of those conditions is missing, the system can fall back to a lower-capability format even though the television itself supports eARC.
Fix missing sound, intermittent audio or the wrong output
Work from the physical connection toward the software setting. Change one item, test, and then continue so you know which step fixed the problem.
- Confirm that the HDMI cable is plugged into the S90H port labeled ARC/eARC and the soundbar or receiver port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC).
- Confirm that Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is enabled on the TV.
- Open Settings > Audio > Expert Settings > HDMI eARC Mode and verify Auto.
- In Sound Output, select the HDMI receiver or soundbar rather than TV Speaker.
- Set the external system to its HDMI ARC/eARC input.
- Power off the TV and audio system, disconnect them briefly, reconnect the ARC/eARC cable, and power the TV back on before the receiver if the link still does not appear.
- Temporarily remove other external devices. Samsung recommends disconnecting additional devices while diagnosing ARC/eARC problems because another HDMI device can interfere with control or audio negotiation.
If TV speakers work but the external system does not, the picture settings are not the cause; concentrate on the ARC/eARC port, Anynet+, Sound Output selection and the receiver input. If the external system appears in Sound Output but produces no audio, recheck the receiver’s selected input and the cable direction. If Atmos is absent but stereo works, verify the source soundtrack and eARC compatibility on every device in the chain.

A practical final checklist
- Model and software confirmed; regional manual consulted where labels differ.
- SDR uses Filmmaker Mode with Contrast 45, Color 25, Color Space Auto, Gamma 2.2 and Warm 2 as the starting baseline.
- SDR Brightness is chosen for the room: 38 for the tested 100-nit dark-room reference or 90 for the tested 200-nit reference, with brighter settings treated as preference choices.
- HDR uses Filmmaker, Contrast 50, Color 25, Color Space Auto, Warm 2, Brightness 100, Peak Brightness High and Tone Mapping Static unless brighter highlights are deliberately preferred.
- Extra motion interpolation is off for a film-like image; Judder Reduction is raised only when smoother motion is wanted.
- Gaming inputs have Input Signal Plus enabled and Game Mode enabled, automatically or manually as required.
- eARC systems use the labeled TV and receiver ports, an eARC-capable cable, Anynet+ enabled, HDMI eARC Mode on Auto and the HDMI receiver selected as Sound Output.
Once these choices are made, save the configuration by leaving the TV in the mode that matches the content you watch most. Revisit brightness when the room changes, and revisit Game Mode or Sound Output only when you change the source or audio hardware.
