Install the OpenMod.Unturned module in your Unturned server’s Modules directory, start the server once, then manage access through openmod.roles.yaml or OpenMod’s om permission commands. The important detail is that permissions are checked per node: granting a parent command does not automatically grant every child command.
What OpenMod permissions control
OpenMod uses roles to bundle permissions and assign them to players. OpenMod’s user documentation describes this as “OpenMod has a simple role-based permission system.” A role can inherit permissions from one or more parent roles and can also define a display name, priority, custom data, and whether it is assigned automatically to new users.
A permission node normally follows the form PluginId:Permission. For example, a command supplied by a plugin might use Kr4ken.NewEssentials:commands.home. RocketMod permissions managed through OpenMod use the RocketMod: prefix.

- Put permissions in a role and assign that role to players.
- Give or remove an individual permission for one player.
- Use wildcards or explicit negations for groups of related permissions.
The configuration file and command changes take effect immediately; you do not need to reload the YAML file after editing it.
Install OpenMod.Unturned on the server
OpenMod is installed as an Unturned module. Perform the installation while the server is stopped so that files are not locked or partially loaded.

- Locate the Unturned installation directory. This is the directory containing the server’s
Modulesfolder. - Download the current
OpenMod.Unturnedmodule archive from the official OpenMod installation page. - Extract the archive. The extracted result should contain a folder named
OpenMod.Unturned. - Copy that folder directly into
Modules. The final layout must beModules/OpenMod.Unturned. Do not leave it nested asModules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned, and do not copy only individual files out of the module folder. - Start the server. The first OpenMod startup can take longer because OpenMod downloads its core components. Allow that startup to finish before diagnosing a missing command or permission file.
- Install the plugins you intend to control. OpenMod supplies the permission framework, but the permission nodes themselves normally come from the plugins that expose commands or features.
After a successful first launch, OpenMod creates its working files, including openmod.roles.yaml. If the server console reports module-loading errors, stop the server and check the folder nesting before changing permission settings.
Find and edit openmod.roles.yaml
Search the OpenMod directory created during the first startup for openmod.roles.yaml. This is the main role definition file. Keep a backup before making substantial changes, and preserve valid YAML indentation: list items use a hyphen and child properties must be indented beneath their parent.
A minimal role file can look like this:

Editing safely
Use spaces rather than tabs and keep the top-level roles: key intact. A malformed YAML file can prevent roles from loading, so make one logical change at a time and watch the next server-console startup for parsing errors. Because changes apply immediately, save the file and test with a player who should have the new access.

Create roles and assign them to players
You can define roles in YAML or use OpenMod’s permissionrole command family. The short command alias om r is used for role operations.

om r add player <player> <role>
om r remove player <player> <role>Replace the angle-bracket values with the player name and the role’s id. For example, assigning the role from the sample file would use om r add player Alex moderator.
Grant or remove one direct permission
om p add player <player> <permission>
om p remove <player> <permission>For example:

om p remove Alex Kr4ken.NewEssentials:commands.homeDirect player permissions are useful for a one-off exception or a temporary test. They also have precedence when they conflict with a permission inherited from a role, so check user-level entries before assuming a role edit will change the result.
Choose roles versus direct permissions
- Use a role when several players need the same access or when permissions should follow a staff tier.
- Use inheritance when a higher role should include the lower role’s capabilities.
- Use a direct permission for a narrowly scoped exception that should not change a shared role.
- Use an explicit negation when a child role must keep most inherited access but lose one capability.
Discover the exact permission for a command
Do not guess a node from the visible command name. OpenMod can generate command permissions, and plugins may use their own naming conventions. Use the help command for the command you are configuring:
help <command>The help output identifies the command and its generated permission. Copy that node exactly, including capitalization, plugin identifier, colon, dots, and any subcommand suffix. Then place it in the role’s permissions list or grant it with om p add player.

This check is especially important for commands with subcommands. A plugin may expose a base command such as teleport and child commands such as teleport.bring. The permission system evaluates the generated nodes, not merely the text you typed at the prompt.
Handle wildcards, child commands, and explicit denials
Wildcard scope
A wildcard ending in .* grants matching child permissions. For example:
TeleportPlugin:teleport.*This covers the matching permissions beneath TeleportPlugin:teleport. A plugin-wide wildcard such as TeleportPlugin:* grants all permissions exposed by that plugin. Use the narrowest wildcard that meets your need; a plugin-wide grant may include administrative commands added later.
Why a parent permission may still fail
Granting only:
TeleportPlugin:teleportdoes not automatically grant TeleportPlugin:teleport.bring or other child nodes. If a player can run the parent command but receives a permission error for a subcommand, run help <command>, identify the child node, and grant that exact node or an appropriate wildcard.
Negate one inherited permission
Prefix a permission with ! to forcefully remove an inherited capability:

!Kr4ken.NewEssentials:kits.vipThis pattern is useful when a child role inherits a broad parent role but must not use one particular feature. Place the negation in the child role, then test with a player who has only the intended role combination.
Understand changes, assignment timing, and precedence
Changes are immediate
Edits to openmod.roles.yaml apply immediately. A server restart or separate configuration reload is not required. If a test still shows the old result, verify that the file was saved in the active OpenMod directory and that the player is using the expected role or direct permission entry.
Automatic assignment is not retroactive
Setting isAutoAssigned: true causes the role to be assigned to new users. Existing users do not receive that role automatically when you change the setting. Assign the role explicitly with om r add player <player> <role> for those players.
Resolve conflicting grants and removals
OpenMod evaluates role inheritance, role priorities, explicit negations, and direct player permissions. A direct player permission overrides a conflicting role permission. When the result is unexpected, inspect all roles attached to the player, the parent chain for each role, any ! entries, and the player’s direct permission list rather than editing only the last role you changed.
Run OpenMod beside RocketMod
OpenMod and RocketMod can run on the same Unturned server, but their permission systems do not have to be synchronized. RocketMod must be installed as a separate module for the integration setting to apply.

In openmod.unturned.yaml, the rocketmodIntegration.permissionSystem setting supports three modes:

Preserve the existing YAML structure and change only the value for rocketmodIntegration.permissionSystem. After selecting a mode, test a command from each framework with a non-administrator account; a role assignment in one system will not necessarily grant access in the other when the systems are separate.
Troubleshoot common permission failures
OpenMod does not load
- Stop the server and confirm the folder is exactly
Modules/OpenMod.Unturned. - Look for accidental double nesting, such as
Modules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned. - Start the server again and allow extra time for the first startup to download OpenMod core components.
- Verify that the module archive was extracted completely rather than copied as an unopened archive.
openmod.roles.yaml is missing
- Confirm the server has completed at least one startup with the module installed.
- Search the OpenMod directory for the exact filename, including its extension.
- If the first startup failed, fix the module path and restart before creating a replacement file manually.
A command says the player lacks permission
- Run
help <command>and copy the generated permission node. - Check that the player has the intended role with
om r add player <player> <role>or inspect the role assignment through your administration workflow. - Compare the node character-for-character with the role or direct permission entry.
- Check parent roles, priorities, and any permission beginning with
!. - If RocketMod is installed, verify that
rocketmodIntegration.permissionSystemmatches the system you intended to use.
The parent command works but a child command fails
Inspect the child command’s own generated node. A parent node such as TeleportPlugin:teleport does not imply TeleportPlugin:teleport.bring. Grant the child node or a wildcard that explicitly covers it.
A role change has no effect on an existing player
Check whether you changed isAutoAssigned. That setting affects new users only. Add the role to the existing player explicitly, and then check whether a direct player permission or an inherited negation is taking precedence.
The node looks correct but the plugin still denies access
Permission checks depend on the plugin registering its permissions before checking them. OpenMod’s developer documentation describes check results as Default, Grant, or Deny. If a custom plugin never registered the node, changing roles cannot make that check succeed; inspect the plugin’s startup log and implementation or contact its maintainer.
