Set up the Logitech MX Master 4 by switching it on, connecting its USB-C wireless receiver, installing Logi Options+, and then assigning actions to its buttons. In Options+, you can also create app-specific assignments, configure the Actions Ring, and control haptic feedback.
The receiver procedure and feature descriptions below follow Logitech’s published instructions. Software labels and operating-system support can change, so use the current Logi Options+ installer and the labels shown in your installation.
What you need before setup
Have the MX Master 4, its USB-C wireless receiver, and a computer with an available USB port. Logitech’s documented quick-start procedure uses the receiver. The setup material does not establish a separate Bluetooth-pairing procedure, so this guide does not invent one.
Logi Options+ is Logitech’s customization application for the MX Master 4. Logitech’s software page lists downloads for Windows 10 or later and macOS 14 or later. Those requirements are changeable; check the current installer page when you download the application rather than treating the versions as permanent.
#1 Best Overall
- Precision you can feel with the Haptic Sense Panel; customizable (1) haptic feedback on specific actions, shortcuts, notifications enhancing productivity on this wireless Bluetooth mouse
- Effortlessly access favorite tools with Actions Ring (2) on this MX Series mouse—a dynamic, customizable overlay adapts to each app, placing most used filters, adjustments, and shortcuts at your cursor
- Scroll 1,000 lines per second and stop on a pixel with the MagSpeed scroll wheel—Logitech’s fastest (3), quietest, and most precise (4) scrolling experience
- Enjoy 2X more powerful connectivity (7) with a USB-C dongle, advanced radio chip, and optimized antenna for faster, stronger, reliable performance—or use Bluetooth for more versatility
- Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation
Locate two controls before you begin:
- Power switch: on the underside of the mouse.
- Easy-Switch button: on the back of the mouse. Holding it for three seconds puts the mouse into pairing-ready mode; the indicator should begin blinking.
The top surface also includes the Haptic Sense Panel. On the MX Master 4, clicking that panel opens the Actions Ring after Logi Options+ is configured.
Connect the MX Master 4 with its receiver
- Turn the mouse on using the switch on its underside.
- Plug the USB-C wireless receiver into a USB port on the computer.
- Move the mouse and check whether the pointer responds.
- If it does not connect, press and hold the Easy-Switch button on the back for three seconds. Release it when the indicator begins blinking, then wait for the computer to establish the connection.
This is the connection sequence documented in Logitech’s universal setup guide. Keep the receiver connected while installing Logi Options+ so the application can identify the mouse.
If the receiver connection still does not start
- Confirm that the underside power switch is on.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- Repeat the three-second Easy-Switch hold and look for the blinking indicator before waiting for pairing.
- Once the pointer works, continue with software installation. If the pointer never responds, solve the receiver connection first; button customization cannot be configured reliably until the mouse is connected.
Install Logi Options+
- Download the current Logi Options+ installer from Logitech.
- Choose the installer for your operating system.
- Install the application and open it after installation.
- Allow the application to detect the connected MX Master 4.
| Operating system | Requirement listed by Logitech |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or later |
| macOS | macOS 14 or later |
These are the versions listed in Logitech’s published software information and may change. If the installer reports a newer requirement, follow the current installer requirement. Do not assume that a feature available on one operating-system release will appear on another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen Options+ does not show the mouse
First verify that the pointer works through the receiver. Then close and reopen Options+ and check the connected-device view again. If the application still cannot identify the mouse, reconnect the receiver and repeat the Easy-Switch pairing-ready step. Logitech’s device settings page in Options+ is also where the company directs users to update mouse firmware when required for certain haptic features.

Customize the MX Master 4 buttons
Logitech describes button reassignment in Logi Options+ as a choose-the-button, choose-the-action process. The exact labels can change between software versions, so use the controls displayed by your current installation rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Open Logi Options+ and select the MX Master 4.
- Select the mouse button you want to change.
- Choose an action from the available action list.
- Save or apply the assignment if the current version presents a confirmation control.
- Move the pointer over the button or use it in the target application to verify the result.
Options+ supports app-specific customization. A button can perform one action in one application and a different action in another. This is useful when the same physical control needs to match different workflows, but it also means that a button may appear to “change” behavior when you switch applications.
Use app-specific assignments deliberately
- Start with a general assignment that makes sense everywhere.
- Add an application-specific assignment only when the application has a command you use often enough to justify the exception.
- Test the button while that application is active, then test it again in another application so you know which behavior is global and which is app-specific.
- If a button behaves unexpectedly, check whether an app-specific assignment is overriding the general one before changing hardware or reinstalling software.
Choose actions from the list Options+ provides
Logitech’s guide establishes that buttons can be assigned actions and that app-specific actions are supported, but the collected instructions do not enumerate every current button action or show every screen. Do not expect a particular command to appear under an identical label on every version. Select the closest available action shown by your installation and verify it in the application where you intend to use it.
Configure the Actions Ring
The Actions Ring is a customizable on-screen overlay for supported MX devices. On the MX Master 4, click the Haptic Sense Panel to open it. Logitech’s instructions then have you select a bubble in the ring. Those bubbles can hold tools, shortcuts, and actions, including actions related to an application.

- Effortlessly access favorite tools with Actions Ring (2) on this MX Series mouse—a dynamic, customizable overlay adapts to each app, placing most used filters, adjustments, and shortcuts at your cursor

- Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 for Mac keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation
- Open Logi Options+ and select the MX Master 4.
- Open the Actions Ring configuration area shown for the device.
- Click the Haptic Sense Panel on the mouse to bring up the ring.
- Select a bubble and assign one of the tools, shortcuts, or actions offered by Options+.
- Open the ring again and select the bubble to confirm that it launches the intended action.
Keep the ring focused on actions that benefit from quick access. A small set of frequently used commands is easier to remember than filling every bubble with rarely used options. For app-related actions, confirm that the target application is active when you test the bubble.
What Logitech reports about the Actions Ring
Logitech’s 2025 Ergo Lab study reported results of up to 33% time savings with Actions Ring shortcuts and up to 63% fewer mouse movements. The study involved 37 MX Master mouse users performing eight desktop actions. Logitech says results vary with the shortcuts assigned, so these figures are study results rather than a guaranteed improvement for every MX Master 4 owner.
| Reported result | Qualification from Logitech |
|---|---|
| Up to 33% time savings | 2025 Logitech Ergo Lab study; 37 MX Master users, eight desktop actions; results vary with assigned shortcuts |
| Up to 63% fewer mouse movements | 2025 Logitech Ergo Lab study; 37 MX Master users, eight desktop actions; results vary with assigned shortcuts |
Set haptic feedback separately
Haptic feedback is configured separately from assigning ordinary button actions. Logitech describes haptics for the Actions Ring, Smart Actions, gestures, and supported plugins. Its Haptic Feedback Guide lists four intensity settings:
| Setting | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Subtle | Lowest listed intensity |
| Low | Low haptic intensity |
| Medium | Medium haptic intensity |
| High | Highest listed intensity |
- Open the MX Master 4 settings in Logi Options+.
- Open the haptic-feedback controls.
- Choose Subtle, Low, Medium, or High.
- Use the available toggles to enable or disable haptics for supported features or plugins.
- Test the Actions Ring and any enabled feature, then adjust the intensity if the feedback is too weak or distracting.
Haptic support is feature-dependent. A toggle may apply only to supported features or plugins, so the absence of feedback from one action does not prove that every haptic function is disabled.

Understand Windows Advanced Haptics
Logitech distinguishes native Windows Advanced Haptics from haptic features delivered through Logi Options+. Native Advanced Haptics require a compatible Windows 11 version with the update released from the end of March 2026 onward. Compatibility therefore depends on the exact Windows 11 release, not merely on the computer running Windows 11.
If native Windows haptics do not activate
- Confirm that the computer is running a compatible Windows 11 version with the required update from the end of March 2026 onward.
- Open Logi Options+ and select the MX Master 4.
- Open the device settings page.
- Check for a mouse firmware update and install it if Logitech offers one.
- After the update, test the Windows haptic feature again.
Updating firmware is Logitech’s stated remedy when Advanced Haptics do not activate automatically. This Windows capability should not be confused with the Actions Ring, Smart Actions, gestures, or plugin haptics that are configured through Options+.

Use this sequence when deciding where a problem lies:
Recommended Free Tools
- Pointer does not move: check the power switch, receiver connection, and three-second Easy-Switch pairing-ready step.
- Pointer works but Options+ cannot identify the mouse: reopen the application, reconnect the receiver, and repeat the pairing-ready step.
- Options+ identifies the mouse but a button does the wrong thing: check whether an app-specific assignment is active for the application currently in focus.
- The Actions Ring does not appear: click the Haptic Sense Panel after Options+ has detected the mouse, then review the ring configuration.
- The ring appears but gives no vibration: review the separate haptic-feedback intensity and feature toggles.
- Windows Advanced Haptics are unavailable: verify the Windows 11 update requirement and check the device settings page for firmware updates.
These checks keep hardware connection, button mapping, Actions Ring configuration, and haptic support separate. Changing a button assignment will not repair a receiver connection, and changing haptic intensity will not create a missing app-specific action.

Build a practical button and ring layout
Start with a general-purpose layer
Assign a broadly useful action to each button first. This gives you a predictable baseline while you learn the mouse and makes it easier to identify which controls need app-specific behavior.
Add exceptions only for real workflow needs
When an application has a command you use repeatedly, create an app-specific assignment for that application instead of replacing the general assignment everywhere. Test the exception with the application active and then switch away from it to confirm that the general behavior returns.
Reserve the Actions Ring for discoverable shortcuts
Use ring bubbles for tools and shortcuts that are valuable but not worth dedicating to a permanent physical button. Group related actions so that the ring becomes a small, repeatable command surface rather than an unstructured list.

First make sure the ring and button actions are correct. Then select one of the four haptic levels and enable only the supported feature feedback you want. Separating these decisions makes it easier to tell whether a problem is an assignment issue or a feedback setting.
What Logitech says about the MX Master 4
Logitech describes the product this way: “MX Master 4 is a high-performance mouse with haptic feedback, designed for an immersive and precise workflow you can feel.” That description refers to the mouse’s haptic-oriented design; the specific feedback available to you still depends on the operating system, Logi Options+ configuration, supported features, plugins, and firmware.
