On an iPhone model that includes the Action button, go to Settings > Action Button, swipe to the function you want, choose any required option, and then press and hold the button to run it. You can assign Silent Mode, a Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memos, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Controls, a Shortcut, Accessibility, Visual Intelligence on eligible devices, or No Action.
The button is not fitted to every iPhone. Apple identifies the supported-model range as iPhone 15 Pro or later, with the Action button replacing the Ring/Silent switch. Exact availability can vary by model, software, language, and region, so check your own Settings app rather than assuming that every iPhone 15 or newer has the same controls.
Check whether your iPhone has an Action button
The Action button occupies the position where the physical Ring/Silent switch appears on other iPhones. Apple’s shortcut instructions describe it as available on supported models, specifically “iPhone 15 Pro or later.” That wording matters: model variants do not necessarily share every feature, and some Action button choices depend on installed software, language, region, or Apple Intelligence eligibility.
The quickest practical check is to open Settings. If the main Settings list contains Action Button, your phone exposes the configurable control. If that entry is absent, you cannot add the feature through software; the phone does not have an Action button that can be assigned in this way.

Open the Action Button settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Action Button. The page displays the assignments available to your device.
- Swipe across the choices until the action you want is centered and selected.
- If the selected action shows another menu below it, tap that menu and choose the specific function.
- For Controls, Shortcut, or Accessibility, make the required selection below the main action. Apple warns that the button does nothing for these three categories until a specific option is chosen.
- Leave Settings. Press and hold the Action button to invoke the assignment.
The control is designed around a press-and-hold gesture, not a quick tap. Holding it also helps prevent accidental activation when you grip the phone, put it in a pocket, or adjust its case.
Assign a built-in action
For a direct Apple-provided function, open Settings > Action Button, swipe to the desired action, select any secondary option that appears, and test it with a press and hold. The available list can include the following choices.
| Action | What pressing and holding does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Mode | Switches between Ring and Silent. | It does not mute every sound. Alarms, media, many games, and certain camera, recording, or emergency sounds can remain audible. |
| Focus | Turns on the selected Focus to silence notifications and filter distractions. | You must choose the particular Focus profile offered below the action. |
| Camera | Opens Camera using the camera option you select, when additional choices are offered. | Available camera choices can depend on the device and software. |
| Visual Intelligence | Invokes Visual Intelligence. | This choice requires Apple Intelligence and is not universal. |
| Flashlight | Turns the flashlight on or off. | The control is separate from display brightness and camera flash settings. |
| Voice Memo | Starts the assigned Voice Memos action. | Recording-related behavior and sound availability can be affected by regional rules and Silent Mode exceptions. |
| Recognize Music | Starts music recognition. | Recognition still depends on the phone’s software, microphone access, and network conditions where applicable. |
| Translate | Opens the Translate function provided by the selected option. | Language availability varies by software, language, and region. |
| Magnifier | Opens Magnifier. | Magnifier settings remain controlled in their own app and accessibility settings. |
| Controls | Runs the specific control you select. | You must tap the control selector and choose an item; leaving it unconfigured makes the button do nothing. |
| Shortcut | Runs one shortcut from the Shortcuts app. | You must select a shortcut below the action; selecting only “Shortcut” is incomplete. |
| Accessibility | Runs the selected accessibility feature. | You must choose the particular feature in the secondary selector. |
| No Action | Disables the assigned behavior. | The button remains physically present but a press and hold produces no assigned command. |
Apple notes that the displayed choices are not identical on every phone. A missing item usually reflects model, software, language, region, or feature eligibility rather than a failed installation.

A shortcut is the most flexible assignment because it can combine several steps instead of opening one fixed function. First make sure the shortcut you want already exists in the Shortcuts app. Then configure the button:
- Open Settings and tap Action Button.
- Swipe to Shortcut.
- Tap Choose a Shortcut.
- Select the shortcut you want to run.
- Press and hold the Action button once to test it.
If you select Shortcut but never tap Choose a Shortcut, Apple’s interface leaves the assignment without a target. In that state the button does nothing, even though “Shortcut” appears to be selected. Return to the same screen and choose a specific item.

Shortcuts can ask for information, open an app, change a setting, or perform several actions in sequence. The Action button does not turn a shortcut into a background service: any confirmation, permission prompt, unavailable app, locked-device restriction, or required input in the shortcut still applies when you invoke it.
Configure Controls and Accessibility correctly
Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility are two-level assignments. The first swipe chooses the category; the selector underneath chooses the actual command. Apple explicitly warns that the Action button does nothing unless the second choice is made.

- Choose Controls on the Action Button settings page.
- Tap the control selector that appears below it.
- Pick the individual control shown in the list.
- Press and hold the button to verify that the selected control, rather than merely a controls menu, runs.
Accessibility
- Choose Accessibility.
- Tap the selector below the action.
- Select the accessibility feature you want.
- Press and hold to test it, then confirm that the feature’s own settings are configured if it requires additional setup.
If the secondary selector is unavailable, the feature may not be supported on that model or software release. Install the latest compatible iOS update and check again; do not expect an unsupported option to appear simply because another iPhone has it.
Understand what Silent Mode actually changes
Assigning Silent Mode makes the Action button a replacement for the old Ring/Silent switch. Press and hold once to switch from Ring to Silent, and press and hold again to switch back. The current state is shown by the system interface when you toggle it.
Apple describes the effect this way: “When Silent mode is on, iPhone doesn’t ring or play alerts or other sound effects (but iPhone may still vibrate).” Silent Mode therefore targets calls, alerts, and system effects; it is not a promise that every sound-producing app will be quiet.

- Clock alarms can still sound.
- Audio played by apps such as Music can still play.
- Many games can continue to produce audio.
- In some countries or regions, camera sounds, Voice Memos sounds, and Emergency Alert sounds may still be audible.
- The phone may vibrate even while Silent Mode is on.
Use the volume controls and the individual app’s audio settings when you need to control media or game sound. Use a Focus when the goal is to silence notifications and filter distractions rather than simply switch the phone between Ring and Silent.
Silent Mode and Focus are different assignments
Silent Mode changes whether the iPhone rings and plays ordinary alert or system sounds. Focus is a notification-management mode: it can silence notifications and filter distractions according to the Focus profile you select. Both can be assigned to the Action button, but they solve different problems.
| Choose this | Best fit | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Mode | You want a fast Ring/Silent toggle for calls and alerts. | No additional profile is required; holding the button toggles the state. |
| Focus | You want notification filtering, scheduled behavior, or a particular interruption policy. | Select the exact Focus profile beneath the Focus action. |
| Shortcut | You want one hold to perform a custom sequence or open a task. | Select a specific shortcut through Choose a Shortcut. |
A Focus does not turn media playback into a universal mute, and Silent Mode does not apply the notification rules configured inside a Focus. Pick the assignment based on whether your priority is sound state, interruptions, or a custom workflow.
Choose the right assignment for your routine
Use a built-in action for a single, predictable job
Camera, Flashlight, Magnifier, Translate, Recognize Music, and Voice Memos are sensible when you want one function with no intermediate menu. A direct assignment is easier to remember and less likely to fail because a shortcut step or permission changed.
Use a shortcut for a multi-step workflow
Choose Shortcut when the useful outcome involves several operations, such as starting a personal workflow, opening a particular app, or asking for a value before continuing. Give the shortcut a distinctive name so it is easy to identify in the selector. Test it while the phone is both unlocked and in the normal locked state in which you expect to use it; lock-screen permissions and app requirements can change the result.

Use Focus when interruptions, not volume, are the problem
If you need notification filtering, select Focus and then choose the profile that contains the right people, apps, schedules, and allowed interruptions. Assigning the broad Focus category without selecting a profile leaves no specific action for the button to perform.
Use No Action to prevent accidental triggers
If you rarely use the button or repeatedly activate it unintentionally, select No Action. This preserves the physical button without giving a hold gesture a command. You can return to the same settings page and assign an action later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the assignment safely
- Stand on the Home Screen and press and hold the button once.
- Confirm that the expected app, control, mode, or shortcut appears.
- If the command changes sound or notifications, verify the resulting state before relying on it in a meeting, class, or quiet location.
- For a shortcut, check the final result rather than assuming that opening the Shortcuts interface means every step completed.
- Repeat the hold to reverse a toggle such as Silent Mode or Flashlight.
Do not judge the configuration from a quick tap. The Action button’s assigned behavior is invoked by pressing and holding, so a brief press may appear to do nothing.
Fix an Action button that does nothing
The Action Button page is missing
Confirm the exact iPhone model and update status. Apple limits the feature to supported models, with iPhone 15 Pro or later named in its guide. A software update cannot add a physical Action button to a model that has the Ring/Silent switch.

- Open Settings > Action Button and verify that the swipe selection is the intended one.

- Press and hold rather than tapping briefly.
- Remove a case or accessory temporarily if it prevents the button from traveling far enough.
- Restart the iPhone and test again if the settings appear correct but the system gives no response.
A shortcut will not run
Return to Settings > Action Button > Shortcut > Choose a Shortcut and verify that the intended shortcut is selected. Open the Shortcuts app and run the shortcut directly to identify permission prompts, missing apps, required input, or an error inside the shortcut itself. Fix those conditions in Shortcuts before testing the button again.

The expected action is not listed
Availability can depend on the iPhone model, iOS version, language, region, and feature requirements. Visual Intelligence, for example, requires Apple Intelligence. If an option is absent, use an available equivalent or a shortcut when the task can be reproduced that way; do not assume the missing item indicates a defective button.
Silent Mode did not mute everything
Check whether the sound came from an alarm, music or another audio app, a game, or a region-specific camera, Voice Memos, or Emergency Alert sound. Silent Mode is intentionally narrower than a universal mute, and vibration can continue. Adjust the relevant app, alarm, volume, or Focus settings for that specific source.
Change, replace, or remove an assignment
You can reassign the button whenever your needs change. Open Settings > Action Button, swipe to a different action, and complete its secondary selection if one appears. To remove a command without changing the phone’s hardware, choose No Action. Switching away from Shortcut does not delete the shortcut from the Shortcuts app; it only stops the Action button from invoking it.

Similarly, changing away from Focus does not delete the Focus profile, and changing away from Silent Mode does not alter other sound settings. The Action Button page controls which command the hold gesture invokes; each feature’s detailed configuration remains in its own Settings or app area.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- The Action button is limited to supported iPhone models; Apple specifically names iPhone 15 Pro or later.
- The setup entry point is Settings > Action Button.
