For 4K at 120Hz, connect the console directly to the Hisense UR8 HDMI socket marked 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed, or an equivalent high-refresh label. Use the console’s supplied HDMI cable when possible, select Game picture mode, switch the input to its enhanced or high-speed HDMI format, and turn on VRR. Then confirm 4K, 120Hz and VRR in the console’s own display menus.
UR8 models differ by region, screen size and firmware. Port numbers, menu wording, refresh-rate limits and local-dimming behavior are not universal, so the labels beside your TV’s sockets and the manual for its exact model take priority over a generic port diagram.
What you need before connecting the console
A working 4K/120Hz connection depends on every link in the chain: the TV input, cable, console output and any receiver or soundbar between them. Prepare these items before changing settings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Hisense UR8 television: identify the HDMI input labeled 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed, or an equivalent high-refresh designation. Hisense says the location and wording vary by model, size and region.
- PS5 or Xbox Series X: update the console if a system update is offered. Menu names can change with console software, but the relevant display controls remain in the screen or TV settings.
- HDMI cable: start with the cable supplied with the console. Replace a damaged or missing cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Hisense also lists Premium High Speed HDMI as a suitable category for 4K 120Hz/144Hz devices; the Xbox Series X guidance specifically calls for its included HDMI 2.1 cable or a certified Ultra High Speed cable.
- Direct connection for initial testing: connect the console to the TV rather than routing it through an AV receiver, switch or soundbar. Add other equipment only after the direct signal works.
The strongest immediate replacement choice is a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, because its certification is intended for the bandwidth used by 4K/120Hz and related features. A cable’s connector shape is not enough evidence of its capability; look for the certification marking and buy a length that does not need an extender or coupler.

Which HDMI port and cable support 4K/120Hz?
Use the socket whose printed label identifies high refresh. Do not assume that HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or the port nearest the side panel is the correct one. On some UR8 variants several ports may support the feature; on others the capability is limited to specifically marked inputs.
| Setup item | Use this | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| TV input | Port marked 4K 120Hz/144Hz, Ultra High Speed, or the equivalent label | Identifies the input designed for the console’s high-refresh signal |
| PS5 cable | Supplied cable in good condition, or certified Ultra High Speed HDMI | Preserves the bandwidth needed for 4K, 120Hz, HDR and VRR |
| Xbox Series X cable | Included HDMI 2.1 cable, or certified Ultra High Speed HDMI | Matches Xbox guidance for its 4K/HDR path |
| Receiver or soundbar path | Bypass it during diagnosis | Passthrough hardware can impose a lower refresh rate or omit VRR |
Hisense’s manual gives the practical rule: “When connecting a gaming device that supports 4K 120Hz/144Hz, please connect to the HDMI port that is labeled 4K 120Hz/144Hz or Ultra High Speed on TV.” Follow the physical label on your set even if a web specification for another UR8 size shows a different port arrangement.
Initial UR8 setup: the exact order
Perform the first setup with the console connected directly to the TV and powered on. If a setting is unavailable, finish the earlier steps, switch away from the input and back, and check again.

Plug one end into the console’s HDMI output and the other into the UR8 high-refresh HDMI input identified above. Push both connectors fully home without forcing them.
- Select the input. Turn on the console, press the Hisense input or source control, and select the HDMI input used for the connection.
- Choose Game picture mode. Open the picture settings for that HDMI input and select Game. Hisense describes this mode as reducing input lag, improving responsiveness and processing YUV 4:4:4 signals precisely.
- Enable automatic game-device detection. In the TV’s game or input settings, turn on the automatic game-device option when your model provides it. The label may differ by region or firmware.
- Enable VRR. Turn VRR on in the same game or input area. VRR synchronizes a changing console frame rate with the panel refresh rate, reducing tearing and judder.
- Use enhanced HDMI format. Set the input’s HDMI Format to the enhanced, high-speed or equivalent option rather than the standard mode. On Hisense’s U8R FAQ, the sequence is Game Mode, automatic game-device setting On, VRR On, then HDMI mode set to high-speed signal.
- Check the console output. Use the PlayStation or Xbox display menu to request 4K and 120Hz. If the screen goes black, wait for the console’s recovery timeout; do not repeatedly unplug the TV while it is negotiating the signal.
PS5 display settings
On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video. Confirm that the resolution is set for 4K output and that 120Hz Output is Automatic. Enable VRR when supported. Exact wording can change after a PlayStation system update, so use the equivalent 4K, 120Hz and VRR controls if your menu looks different.

How to verify the PS5 connection
- Return to the Screen and Video information pages after changing the TV input to enhanced mode.
- Check that the console is not reporting a restricted HDMI device or cable.
- Start a game known to offer a 120Hz performance mode. A game may need its own performance or high-frame-rate option; the console cannot force every title to render at 120 frames per second.
- If 4K is available but 120Hz is not, leave the console on the high-refresh TV input and work through the troubleshooting order later in this guide.
Independent testing of the UR8SG reports PS5 support for 1440p/120Hz, 4K/120Hz and HDMI Forum VRR. That result applies to the tested UR8SG configuration, not automatically to every regional UR8 size or firmware version.
Xbox Series X display settings
On Xbox Series X, open Settings > General > TV & display options. Set the resolution to 4K and the refresh rate to 120Hz, then open the console’s 4K TV details screen. That page lists which combinations of resolution, refresh rate, HDR and gaming features the Xbox currently detects from the TV.
How to read the Xbox capability screen
- A missing 4K/120Hz check usually points to the TV input, HDMI format or cable rather than a game setting.
- VRR and automatic low-latency behavior should appear as supported features when the UR8 and the connected path advertise them.
- If you see a warning after selecting 120Hz, accept it only if the picture remains stable; otherwise return to 60Hz and diagnose the physical connection.
Xbox Wire says to use “the HDMI 2.1 cable that came with your Xbox Series X.” The Xbox test configuration reported for the UR8 family supports 1440p/120Hz, 4K/120Hz, HDMI Forum VRR, Dolby Vision and FreeSync Premium Pro, but support can vary by UR8 variant and by the game or format being used.

TechRadar describes four HDMI 2.1 ports on its tested UR8 and lists console 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ gaming. That port count should not be treated as universal: inspect the sockets on your television before choosing one.
Game Mode, input lag and picture processing
Game mode is a latency-focused preset, not a guarantee that every picture-processing feature remains unchanged. Hisense says it reduces input lag and handles YUV 4:4:4 precisely, which helps text and fine color detail from a console.
TechRadar measured 11.7ms of input lag at 4K/60Hz on its tested UR8 in 2026 after the relevant game settings were enabled. The same review measured 20ms before those changes. These are review-lab measurements for one tested configuration, not a promised result for every screen size, firmware version, refresh rate or picture setting.

VRR, ALLM and local dimming
VRR
Variable refresh rate lets the TV adjust its refresh timing as the console’s frame rate changes. That reduces visible tearing and can make uneven frame delivery look smoother. It does not turn a 30-frame-per-second game into a 120-frame-per-second game; it only coordinates the display with the frames the console actually produces.
ALLM and automatic game detection
Automatic low-latency behavior can switch the TV into a game-oriented preset when it detects a console. Hisense’s setup sequence still recommends turning on automatic game-device detection manually when available, because detection can be disabled per input or can fail when a receiver is inserted in the chain.
Local dimming while VRR is active
Hisense notes that VRR can affect local-dimming controls on some models. If dark-scene contrast changes, blooming becomes more visible or a dimming option is unavailable after enabling VRR, that may be a model behavior rather than a defective panel. Decide whether smoother motion or the previous dimming behavior matters more for the game you are playing.
Direct connection versus receiver or soundbar passthrough
A direct console-to-TV connection is the cleanest way to establish 4K/120Hz, HDR and VRR. An AV receiver or soundbar may be able to pass those signals, but its HDMI inputs, firmware and bandwidth determine what reaches the TV.
Best Value
- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
| Connection method | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Console directly to UR8 | Fewest negotiation points; easiest 4K/120Hz and VRR diagnosis | Audio may need to return through the TV or another output |
| Console through receiver | Centralized switching and audio formats | Receiver may limit 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM or HDR; verify every HDMI port and firmware |
| Console through soundbar | Simple audio routing when the bar supports the signal | Many bars accept only lower-bandwidth video; test direct before blaming the TV |
If a direct connection works but passthrough does not, leave the console on the TV and send audio separately, or consult the receiver or soundbar’s documented 4K/120Hz and VRR passthrough specifications. Do not change several devices at once; isolate the device that removes the capability.
Troubleshooting: 4K works but 120Hz does not
- Recheck the physical port. Move the console to the UR8 socket labeled for 4K 120Hz/144Hz or Ultra High Speed. Confirm the selected source matches that socket.
- Replace or reseat the cable. Use the console’s original cable or a certified Ultra High Speed cable. Test without an extension, coupler or wall plate.
- Change HDMI Format. Open the input’s settings and select enhanced, high-speed signal or the equivalent option. A standard HDMI mode can allow 4K/60Hz while blocking the higher refresh mode.
- Reapply Game mode and VRR. Set Game picture mode, automatic game-device detection On and VRR On, then power-cycle the console so it renegotiates the link.
- Check the console menu. PS5 should show 4K resolution, 120Hz Output Automatic and VRR enabled when supported. Xbox should show 4K resolution, 120Hz and the corresponding checks on 4K TV details.
- Remove intermediaries. Connect directly to the TV. If 120Hz returns, the receiver, switch or soundbar is the limiting component.
- Try another supported title or mode. Some games expose 120Hz only through a performance or high-frame-rate option. The console’s system menu is the better place to establish whether the link itself works.
Troubleshooting: 4K/120Hz works but HDR is missing
- Confirm the console is connected to the same high-refresh input after changing the TV’s HDMI format; capability detection can change when the input mode changes.
- Open the Xbox 4K TV details screen or the PS5 Screen and Video information page and check the HDR capability reported by the TV.
- Test with the receiver or soundbar bypassed. A passthrough device may carry 4K/120Hz but drop a particular HDR format.
- Check the game’s own HDR option. A title can run at 120Hz without using HDR, while another title may choose a lower frame-rate HDR mode.
- Do not infer Dolby Vision support for PS5 from Xbox results. The reported Dolby Vision capability is tied to the tested Xbox/UR8 configuration and does not establish identical support for every console.
Troubleshooting: VRR is unavailable, flickers or changes the picture
- Verify VRR is enabled on the TV input and in the console’s display settings. Both ends must advertise the feature.
- Use the direct connection and the certified cable while testing. Remove switches, receivers and soundbars.
- Confirm the console is outputting a supported resolution and refresh combination, such as 4K/120Hz or 1440p/120Hz where your model supports it.
- Watch for local-dimming changes. Hisense documents that VRR can affect local-dimming controls on some models; a changed dimming option is not by itself proof of a fault.
- If the picture repeatedly blanks or flickers, lower the console temporarily to 4K/60Hz. A stable 60Hz signal narrows the problem to high-bandwidth negotiation, cable quality, passthrough or a model-specific firmware issue.
Troubleshooting: black screen or “no signal” after selecting 120Hz
Wait for the console’s display-recovery period first. If the picture does not return, switch the TV to another source, reconnect the console directly, and use the supplied cable. Select 60Hz in the console’s display settings, confirm the TV input is in enhanced mode, then retry 120Hz. A black screen during this test is more often a link-negotiation problem than evidence that the panel cannot display 4K.
When an AV receiver or soundbar is involved, restore the direct connection before changing advanced TV options. If direct 120Hz is stable and the intermediary is not, check that device’s HDMI input and output specifications and firmware rather than repeatedly resetting the UR8.
