The Galaxy Z Flip7’s outer display, called the FlexWindow, can handle useful glanceable information and quick controls while the phone stays closed. A practical setup starts with two or three widgets you actually check—such as Calendar, Weather, or Battery—then adds appearance shortcuts. Optional Now Brief, Now Bar, and Gemini features can extend the cover screen, but none is required for the basic setup.
This guide follows Samsung’s documented Galaxy Z Flip7 procedures. Menu labels and feature availability can vary by country, software version, carrier, or device variant, so the closed-screen editor is a useful alternative when a Settings path looks different.
What the FlexWindow can do while the phone is closed
The FlexWindow is the small outer display on the Galaxy Z Flip7. With the phone folded, it can show selected widgets, notifications, wallpaper, a clock, shortcuts, battery information, and quick settings. Tapping a supported widget opens it directly; you do not have to unfold the phone for every glance or small action.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Only widgets supported by the installed software appear in the widget picker. The available list can therefore differ by region, software release, or variant. Start with a short list instead of filling every available slot: a focused cover screen is easier to scan and less likely to become visual clutter.
Choose a useful starting set
- Calendar: useful for checking the next appointment without opening the main display.
- Weather: gives a quick local conditions check.
- Battery: helps you see the phone’s charge before leaving it closed.
Those are examples, not a Samsung requirement. Keep two or three items initially, use them for a day, and remove anything you rarely check. You can return to the editor later to add more supported widgets, remove selected ones, change their display styles, or arrange the set.
Wake the cover screen and learn its gestures
With the phone folded, double-tap the FlexWindow or press the side/power button to wake it. Once it is awake, the following gestures provide the basic navigation:
| Gesture or action | Result |
|---|---|
| Swipe left | Move to the widgets you selected. |
| Swipe right | View notifications. |
| Swipe down from the top | Open cover-screen quick settings. |
| Tap a widget | Open that widget or its supported function. |
| Pinch with two fingers | See all selected widgets at once. |
For notifications, tap one to open it or swipe it away to dismiss it. The exact notification action can depend on the app and the phone’s notification permissions, but the cover-screen notification panel is reached with a right swipe.

What appears in quick settings
Swipe down from the top edge of the awake FlexWindow to see controls Samsung lists for the Z Flip7, including Wi‑Fi, volume, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, flashlight, mobile data or network controls, screen recorder, Modes, and brightness. Samsung states that the quick-setting icons shown on the FlexWindow cannot be modified. If a control is not present in that panel, use the unfolded phone’s normal quick panel or Settings instead.
Add and arrange widgets
You can configure widgets from the closed screen or through Settings. The two routes edit the same cover-screen selection, but the labels and availability can vary with software and region.
| Route | Exact starting point | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| Closed-screen editor | Wake the FlexWindow, swipe left to widgets, touch and hold, then tap Edit. | Fast when the phone is already folded and you want to change the current set. |
| Settings | Open Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets. | Useful when the closed-screen edit control is hard to find or your software exposes the menu more clearly in Settings. |
Use the closed FlexWindow editor
- Fold the Galaxy Z Flip7 and wake the FlexWindow with a double-tap or the side/power button.
- Swipe left until the widget area appears.
- Touch and hold the widget area, then tap Edit.
- When the phone asks you to open it, unfold the device. The editor continues on the main display.
- At the bottom of the editor, tap each widget you want to add. Choose a display style when styles are offered; the selected items are added to the top portion of the editor.
- To remove a selected widget, tap the red minus symbol beside it.
- Use the editor’s arrangement controls to put the selected widgets in the order you prefer, then go back to save the changes.
- Close the phone, wake the FlexWindow, and swipe left to verify the set. Pinch with two fingers if you want an overview of all the selected widgets.
If a widget you expected is missing from the picker, it is not supported by the current cover-screen software configuration. Do not treat the absence as a setup failure; choose from the supported list or check again after a software update.
Rank #2
- Model name: Galaxy Z Flip7
- Operating system: Android 16
- Display Size: 6.9 inches
- Cellular technology: 5G
- Storage Capacity: 512GB of internal storage provides ample space for apps, photos, videos, and files without worrying about running out of memory
Use the Settings route
- Open the phone and launch Settings.
- Tap Cover Screen, then tap Widgets.
- Select the supported widgets you want, such as Calendar, Weather, or Battery, and choose any available display styles.
- Return to the previous screen to save. Fold the phone, wake the FlexWindow, and swipe left to check the result.
If your menus do not use the exact wording above, search Settings for “Cover Screen” or “Widgets.” Samsung’s menu names can change with software releases and differ between regions.
Change the FlexWindow wallpaper, clock, and shortcuts
The wallpaper editor controls more than the background. It can also change the clock presentation, shortcut choices, battery icon, and colors. Some extra choices, including Emoji options, depend on the wallpaper you select.
- Fold the phone and wake the FlexWindow.
- Touch and hold the cover screen to enter the wallpaper editor.
- Swipe through the available wallpaper choices and tap the one you want to customize.
- Open the phone when prompted so the full editing controls appear.
- Tap the clock to choose its style, font, color, and displayed details.
- Choose a shortcut set if you want quick access from the cover display; Samsung gives Camera and Flashlight as examples.
- Select the battery icon style and adjust the available color options.
- If the chosen wallpaper exposes additional options, such as Emoji, configure them here.
- Tap Done to save, then close the phone and inspect the result on the FlexWindow.
Keep the clock and shortcut choices legible at the size you will actually use. A busy wallpaper or low-contrast color can make the information harder to read even when the setting is technically enabled.
Manage notifications without unfolding the phone
Wake the cover display and swipe right to reach notifications. Tap a notification to open it or swipe it away to dismiss it. Opening an item may require the phone to unfold, an unlock, or an app-specific action, depending on the notification and your security settings.
If nothing appears, check that the originating app is allowed to send notifications on the main phone. The FlexWindow does not create notifications by itself; it presents notifications that the phone and apps are permitted to show.
Recommended Free Tools
Optional: configure Now Brief
Now Brief is an optional information summary. You can finish the core widget, gesture, and wallpaper setup without enabling it.
- With the phone open, go to Settings > Galaxy AI > Now brief.
- Under Content to include, select the categories you want in the brief.
- Go back to save the category choices.
- If you want the expanded Now Brief to be available without unlocking, enable the separate option for expanded access without unlocking.
Samsung documents access from Home or the Edge panel. The categories and the exact wording of the expanded-access switch can change with software or region. Enable only the information you want surfaced; leaving categories off keeps the brief focused.
Optional: configure Now Bar
Now Bar is another optional layer for current activities and information. It is separate from the basic widget list and can be configured independently.
- Open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Now bar.
- Tap View more to see the available categories.
- Select the categories you want displayed.
- Use the documented toggles for Now Brief and Current mode if you want those items represented in Now Bar.
- Close the phone, wake the FlexWindow, and swipe upward on Now Bar.
- Select a category to expand it. Touch and hold Now Bar when you need to edit categories or related settings.
Now Bar is not necessary for notifications or ordinary widgets. Treat it as an activity-focused layer and keep its categories limited to information you want available at a glance.
Optional: launch Gemini from the closed phone
Samsung documents a side-button configuration that lets you call Gemini while the Z Flip7 is closed. This is optional and involves an assistant service in addition to the cover-screen controls.
- With the phone open, go to Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press.
- Choose Digital assistant, then select Google under Recommended AI assistant.
- Close the phone.
- Press and hold the side button to launch Gemini.
- Grant any permissions it requests. Samsung notes that you may need to select something on screen before all information is shown.
Samsung distinguishes basic Samsung Galaxy AI features from enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features, which can have different terms or fees. Check the terms shown on your device before relying on a particular assistant capability. The side-button setting does not change the ordinary widget and notification gestures.

A simple layout makes the FlexWindow useful without turning it into a second home screen. Use the following sequence as a starting point:
Rank #4
- FLEXIBLE COMPACT DESIGN: Galaxy Z Flip7 features an innovative foldable design that fits easily in pockets and small bags while opening into a full-size smartphone experience. Enjoy compact portability without sacrificing screen size, performance, or usability
- ENHANCED FLEXWINDOW EXPERIENCE: Use the redesigned edge-to-edge cover screen to access apps, widgets, music controls, notifications, and quick updates without opening your phone. Customize your FlexWindow for faster everyday access and convenience
- ADVANCED AI FEATURES: Access Google Gemini and Galaxy AI tools directly from the FlexWindow for hands-free assistance, smart suggestions, quick replies, and personalized updates designed to simplify daily tasks
- HANDS-FREE FLEXCAM PHOTOGRAPHY: Capture high-quality selfies, videos, and group shots using FlexCam with Auto Zoom functionality. The advanced 50MP camera system delivers sharp, vibrant photos and improved low-light performance for everyday photography
- DURABLE HIGH-PERFORMANCE BUILD: Built with Armor Aluminum construction and IP48 water resistance, Galaxy Z Flip7 combines durability with powerful everyday performance, long-lasting battery life, and spacious 256GB storage in a lightweight foldable design
- Add Calendar, Weather, and Battery, then remove whichever one you do not check during a normal day.
- Put the widget you consult most often first so one swipe reaches it quickly.
- Choose a wallpaper with enough contrast for the clock and selected shortcut icons.
- Set Camera or Flashlight as a shortcut only if you regularly need that action with the phone closed.
- Leave Now Brief and Now Bar off initially. Add their categories later if you discover a specific information gap that the ordinary widgets do not cover.
- Test the layout folded, in the lighting where you normally use the phone, and confirm that notifications, quick settings, and the clock are readable.
This is an organizational recommendation, not a limit imposed by Samsung. The editor remains available whenever your habits change.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The Edit command does not appear
- Make sure the phone is folded and the FlexWindow is awake before swiping to the widget area.
- Touch and hold the widget area rather than tapping a widget itself.
- Use Settings > Cover Screen > Widgets as the alternate route.
- If the labels differ, search Settings for “Cover Screen”; a software or regional variation may be using different wording.
A widget is not listed
Only supported widgets are selectable. If an item is absent, choose one that appears in the picker and check whether a later software update changes the supported list. Do not assume that every widget available on the unfolded home screen can run on the FlexWindow.
The changes are not visible after saving
- Return from the editor rather than closing it abruptly; going back is the documented save step.
- Fold the phone and wake the cover display again before checking.
- Swipe left to the widget pages and pinch with two fingers to verify the full selection.
- If you edited wallpaper or clock settings, tap Done in that editor before closing the phone.
Notifications are missing
- Wake the FlexWindow and swipe right; notifications are not shown in the widget pages.
- Check the sending app’s notification permission on the main phone.
- Remember that tapping a notification can invoke an unlock or app-specific action.
A quick-setting icon cannot be changed
Samsung states that FlexWindow quick-setting icons cannot be modified. Use the available controls there, or open the phone and use the regular quick panel or Settings for additional controls.
Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini is unavailable
These are optional features with software, region, account, permission, and service dependencies. Confirm that you are following the relevant path—Galaxy AI > Now brief, Lock screen and AOD > Now bar, or Advanced features > Side button > Long press—and check for updates. A missing menu can indicate that the feature is not offered on your software version or in your region, rather than a problem with the basic cover-screen setup.
What to check after setup
- Double-tap or press the side/power button and confirm the FlexWindow wakes reliably.
- Swipe left to reach each selected widget and tap one to verify its supported action.
- Swipe right and confirm that a test notification appears and can be dismissed.
- Swipe down from the top and identify the quick settings you expect; remember that their icons cannot be customized.
- Touch and hold the cover screen to confirm that wallpaper and clock editing are available.
- If you enabled Now Brief, Now Bar, or Gemini, test those features separately so you know which action launches each one.
Once these checks pass, the Z Flip7 can stay closed for routine glances while the unfolded display remains available for tasks that need more space.
