Set up the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ by installing compatible SATA drives, connecting the NAS and a computer to the same local network, discovering it with ASUSTOR Control Center or AiMaster, and completing the ADM initialization wizard. The AS6702T v2 has two SATA bays and four optional M.2 slots, so decide whether you need simple capacity or drive-level redundancy before creating the first storage space. Keep a separate backup: a redundant array can remain available after a drive failure, but it is not a backup.
Identify the exact NAS before you begin
Check the label on the chassis and its packaging. The model covered here is AS6702T v2, marketed as the Lockerstor 2 Gen2+. The older AS6702T is a different revision with different networking specifications, so do not apply the v2 instructions or assumptions to an older unit.
According to ASUSTOR’s specification for the v2, the hardware includes an Intel Celeron N5105 quad-core processor, 4 GB of DDR4 memory expandable to 16 GB, two SATA III drive bays that accept 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives, four M.2 slots, and two 5-Gigabit Ethernet ports. It supports ASUSTOR Data Manager (ADM) 5.0 and later. The download center listed ADM 5.1.4.RL21, released September 3, 2026, when this guide was prepared; use the current model-specific download page rather than assuming that release remains the newest one.

- The AS6702T v2, its power adapter, and a working electrical outlet.
- One or two compatible SATA drives. Each drive can be 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch, but the exact model should appear on ASUSTOR’s current compatibility list.
- A Phillips screwdriver for the drive-tray installation steps specified in the Quick Installation Guide.
- A router or network switch, plus an Ethernet cable. For a 5-Gigabit link, the router or switch, cabling, and client device must also support the required speed.
- A desktop or laptop on the same local network. Install ASUSTOR Control Center on it, or use the AiMaster mobile app as the discovery alternative.
- Administrative credentials you are prepared to store securely. The ADM wizard will ask you to establish the NAS administrator account.
- A plan for the first storage space: maximum usable capacity, protection against one drive failing, or a balance between those goals.
Do not buy a drive solely because its interface says SATA or because its capacity looks suitable. Firmware behavior, sector format, vibration characteristics, and NAS compatibility vary by model. Check each exact drive model against the live ASUSTOR compatibility information before installing it. A drive that is not listed is not automatically unusable, but its operation is not established by the compatibility list.

Install the SATA drives
1. Read the model-specific hardware guide
Open the AS6702T v2 Quick Installation Guide from ASUSTOR’s download center before removing a tray. Use its diagrams for tray orientation, screw positions, and any model-specific handling instructions. The guide is the authority for the physical assembly; do not force a tray or substitute screws that could interfere with the drive or enclosure.
2. Mount each 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drive
- Place the NAS on a stable, clean surface and disconnect power if anything is already attached.
- Remove one drive tray at a time using the release mechanism shown in the guide.
- Place the compatible SATA drive in the tray with its connectors aligned with the tray opening.
- Secure the drive with the supplied screws in the locations specified for its size. A 2.5-inch drive and a 3.5-inch drive use different mounting holes.
- Slide the tray back in until it is fully seated, then repeat for the second drive if you are installing one.
Handle bare drives by their edges. Do not touch the circuit board or press on the connector. If a drive contains files from another computer or NAS, assume that initialization may erase or reformat it; copy anything you need elsewhere before proceeding.
Optional: understand the four M.2 slots
The AS6702T v2 has four M.2 slots in addition to its two SATA bays. M.2 NVMe storage is optional for the initial setup; the NAS does not require an M.2 device to boot ADM or create a storage space on the SATA drives. Add NVMe devices only after checking the current model documentation and compatibility information for the supported form factor, drive type, and intended ADM function.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a first installation, leaving the M.2 slots empty reduces the number of variables. You can return to ADM’s storage tools later when you have decided whether the NVMe devices are for additional storage or another supported function. Do not assume that any M.2 card, adapter, or configuration is supported merely because it fits physically.
Connect the NAS to your network
- Attach the supplied power adapter to the NAS and to the electrical outlet.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from one NAS network port to your router or switch.
- Connect the setup computer to that same router or switch, by Ethernet or by the same local network’s Wi-Fi.
- Power on the NAS and wait for the network indicator to show a link.
The two network ports are rated for 5 Gigabit Ethernet, but that rating describes the NAS interface, not an end-to-end transfer result. A 5-Gigabit-capable NAS connected to a gigabit router, an unsuitable cable, or a client with a slower adapter will negotiate at the lower available rate. Verify the capabilities of every segment—NAS port, cable, switch or router port, and client adapter—before troubleshooting a link speed that is lower than 5 Gigabit.

For initial discovery, avoid placing the NAS and computer on isolated guest Wi-Fi networks or separate VLANs. Control Center and AiMaster need local-network visibility to find an uninitialized device.
Discover the AS6702T v2
Use ASUSTOR Control Center on a computer
- Download and install the current ASUSTOR Control Center release for your desktop or laptop operating system.
- Start Control Center while the computer and NAS are connected to the same local network.
- Run a scan. The uninitialized AS6702T v2 should appear with its model identity and network information.
- Select the device and choose the option to open its ADM login or initialization interface.
If the scan is empty, check the NAS link light, confirm that the computer is not connected only to a guest network, temporarily disable a firewall rule that blocks local discovery, and rescan. A network scan cannot find a powered-off NAS or one whose cable is not making a link.
Use AiMaster on a phone or tablet
AiMaster is ASUSTOR’s mobile alternative for discovering and beginning setup. Install the current app, connect the phone or tablet to the same local network as the NAS, and follow the app’s device-discovery and initialization prompts. If the mobile app cannot see the unit, use Control Center from a computer to separate a discovery problem from a mobile-network permission problem.
Initialize ADM online
- In Control Center or AiMaster, select the uninitialized AS6702T v2.
- Choose the standard initialization path and allow the wizard to obtain the ADM software if the NAS has internet access.
- Confirm that the detected model is AS6702T v2 before accepting an ADM image or firmware package.
- Follow the prompts to install ADM, create the administrator account, set the device name, and configure the initial network settings.
- When the wizard presents storage options, select the layout that matches your capacity and redundancy plan; read the warning before applying it.
- Wait for the wizard to finish and sign in to ADM. Do not power off the NAS while ADM is being written or the storage space is being created.
There is no dependable universal setup time. Download size, internet access, drive capacity, drive condition, network speed, and the choices made in the wizard all affect how long initialization takes. Treat a progress display as an estimate rather than a promise.
Initialize ADM without internet access
Use the offline method when the NAS cannot reach the internet but the setup computer can download files elsewhere. Matching the image to the exact model is essential; do not use an ADM package intended for the older AS6702T or another ASUSTOR model.

Choose the first storage layout deliberately
The two SATA bays let you prioritize capacity or protection against a drive failure. The right choice depends on whether the NAS will hold replaceable media, original work, backups, or a mixture. ADM’s exact labels and available layouts can change between releases, so confirm the current choices in Storage Manager or the current user guide before clicking the final confirmation.
| Priority | Typical approach when offered by ADM | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum usable capacity | Use the drives as a non-redundant or capacity-focused space | More of the installed disk capacity is available for files | A failed drive can make the space unavailable or cause data loss, depending on the layout |
| Protection from one drive failing | Use a mirrored layout, commonly labeled RAID 1, when the current wizard provides it | The array can remain available after one member drive fails | Usable capacity is roughly limited to the smaller drive, and replacing a failed drive requires a rebuild |
| Staged setup | Install one compatible drive now and add or replace drives only after confirming ADM’s supported migration paths | Lower initial cost and a chance to learn ADM before committing both drives | You begin without drive-level redundancy and may need to recreate a space for a different layout |
When two drives have different capacities, a mirrored space generally uses the smaller drive’s capacity for both members. Mixing models can also produce different noise, vibration, power, and workload characteristics. Compare exact drive compatibility, capacity, workload suitability, noise, and cost—not just the interface label.
RAID or mirroring does not protect against accidental deletion, malware, theft, fire, or a damaged NAS. Keep an independent backup on another device or location, and test that you can restore important files before treating the NAS as reliable storage.
Finish the first ADM configuration
Update carefully
After signing in, check ADM’s update area and the ASUSTOR download center for a newer release specific to the AS6702T v2. The ADM 5.1.4.RL21 listing from September 3, 2026 is a point-in-time listing, not a guarantee that it remains current. Read release notes and maintain a fallback plan before applying a major update.

Protect the administrator account
- Use a unique, long password that is not reused on another service.
- Record recovery information in a password manager or another secure location.
- Keep administrative access separate from ordinary file-sharing accounts when possible.
- Do not expose the administration interface to the public internet merely to make remote access convenient. Configure remote access only after understanding ADM’s current security controls.
Verify storage and alerts
Open Storage Manager and confirm that the expected drives, capacities, health information, and storage space are present. Configure notifications if ADM offers them for drive errors, degraded arrays, temperature, or low capacity. An alert is useful only if the notification destination is monitored.
Create shares and permissions in a controlled order
- Create a small test shared folder first.
- Create user accounts for the people or services that need access instead of sharing the administrator account.
- Assign the minimum permissions required for each share.
- Test read and write access from a client computer before copying a large data set.
- Only then create additional shares and begin the initial transfer.
This sequence makes permission mistakes easier to isolate and reduces the chance of copying irreplaceable files into a share that is inaccessible to the intended user.
Check network expectations before diagnosing performance
The AS6702T v2’s dual 5-Gigabit ports establish interface capability, not a guaranteed file-copy speed. Actual transfers also depend on the negotiated link, switch or router backplane, cable category and condition, client adapter, storage layout, file sizes, protocol overhead, and whether another task is using the NAS. A single large sequential file and a directory containing thousands of small files can produce very different results.
If the link is slower than expected, inspect the negotiated speed on the NAS, switch or router, and client. Replace a suspect cable, bypass an intermediate device for a controlled check, and confirm that the client itself has a 5-Gigabit adapter. Do not interpret the port’s 5-Gigabit label as an independent benchmark.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete initialization
The NAS does not appear in Control Center
- Confirm that the NAS is powered on and that the Ethernet link indicator is lit.
- Check both ends of the cable and try another known-good cable or switch port.
- Make sure the computer and NAS are on the same local network rather than isolated guest Wi-Fi or separate VLANs.
- Temporarily check local firewall rules that may block Control Center discovery, then rescan.
- Try AiMaster or a second computer to determine whether the problem is limited to the discovery application.
The ADM wizard will not start or the browser behaves incorrectly
Clear the browser cache and retry the initialization interface. If the problem persists, restart the NAS and open the interface again. Use a current browser and avoid leaving multiple stale initialization tabs open.

Initialization fails after a memory upgrade
Temporarily return the NAS to its original memory configuration and retry. If the original configuration succeeds, verify that the replacement memory is the correct type and supported capacity before reinstalling it. The AS6702T v2 supports up to 16 GB of DDR4 according to its specification, but a capacity limit does not make every module compatible.
A drive is rejected or the process stops during storage creation
Shut down safely, reseat the drive, and check its exact model against ASUSTOR’s compatibility information. Try another compatible drive if one is available. A previously used disk can contain residual data or metadata that conflicts with initialization. Do not erase a disk until you have confirmed that it contains no files you need.
Use the vendor’s empty-bay recovery procedure when necessary
ASUSTOR’s alternative troubleshooting procedure is to shut down the NAS, remove all drives, boot the empty unit, reconnect with Control Center, and then install the drives and retry initialization. This procedure can help distinguish a chassis or ADM-discovery problem from a disk problem. Removing drives can expose data to loss or make an existing array unavailable, so use it only after confirming that important data is backed up and follow the current support instructions for the exact model.
The offline image is rejected
- Confirm the file is the ADM image for AS6702T v2, not the older AS6702T or another model.
- Download the file again from ASUSTOR’s official source if the transfer may have been interrupted.
- Use the manual image-upload control in Control Center rather than attempting to open the image as a normal document.
- Keep the NAS and setup computer on the same local network while the image is uploaded.
Power and operating considerations
ASUSTOR’s AS6702T v2 datasheet lists 18.8 W in operation, 12.9 W during disk hibernation, and 1.18 W in sleep. These are manufacturer figures from the datasheet, not a measurement of your particular drive combination, network load, or household power conditions. Additional drives, M.2 devices, USB peripherals, and sustained activity can change actual consumption.
A practical first-day checklist
- Verify the label says AS6702T v2.
- Confirm every SATA drive model against the current compatibility information.
- Install drives using the model-specific Quick Installation Guide and a suitable Phillips screwdriver.
- Connect power and Ethernet, then place the setup computer on the same local network.
- Discover the NAS with Control Center or AiMaster.
- Use the matching ADM image, online or offline, and do not interrupt installation.
- Choose capacity versus redundancy consciously in Storage Manager.
- Create a strong administrator account and test a non-administrator share.
- Check for current ADM updates and configure health notifications.
- Make a separate backup before storing irreplaceable data on the NAS.
What a successful setup looks like
You have completed setup when Control Center or AiMaster identifies the unit as AS6702T v2, ADM opens normally, Storage Manager reports the intended drives and storage space without warnings, and a test account can access only the shared folders you assigned. At that point, document the installed drive models, storage layout, ADM version, administrator recovery method, and backup location. That record will make a future drive replacement or recovery substantially safer.
