To use the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro as an e-reader, open its included Kindle app, sign in with the Amazon account that has access to your books, download a title from Library, and open it. Amazon says a Kindle book activates a reading environment that silences notifications and reduces blue light. The 12 Pro is still a color-screen tablet, not an E Ink Kindle.
Get a Kindle book ready to read
- Complete the tablet’s initial setup. Connect the device and follow its on-screen prompts. Amazon’s published instructions do not specify the 12 Pro’s exact first-boot screens.
- Open Kindle. Amazon says the Kindle app is included with the Alexa Tablet line.
- Sign in to the right Amazon account. Use the account that owns the Kindle books or has access to them. After signing in, open the Library tab.
- Download a book. Select a title in Library and download it. The downloaded book is stored on the tablet for reading there.
- Open the book. Amazon describes the Kindle reading environment as silencing notifications and reducing blue light when a book is opened. The exact controls for activating that environment may vary by software version; if you do not see the expected behavior, check the tablet’s current on-device help.
Adjust the page for comfortable reading
While a book is open, tap near the top of the screen to reveal Kindle’s controls. Tap Aa to adjust the font style and size, page color, and text layout density. Kindle also supports continuous scrolling.
Choose a reading theme
Amazon advertises three reading themes for the 12 Pro: warm natural color, softened paper tone, and grayscale. These options change the screen’s appearance; they do not turn it into an E Ink display.
Consider glare and the display option
The 12 Pro is offered with a standard display or an anti-glare Nanomatte option. Amazon says Nanomatte is designed to reduce glare while preserving detail and color accuracy. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent test result.

Should you use the Pro Pen?
The optional Pro Pen is not needed to read or adjust a Kindle book. Amazon says it can be used to highlight, underline, write notes, and mark up pages. Annotations can sync across Kindle apps on pen-supported devices and Kindle Scribe, according to Amazon. Check the current local listing for accessory price and compatibility before buying.
What the 12 Pro offers as a reading device
Amazon announced the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro on October 9, 2026. Its listed display specifications are 12 inches, 280 PPI, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. These are manufacturer specifications. The larger color screen and access to tablet apps make it different from a dedicated E Ink Kindle; choose based on whether you value tablet versatility or a purpose-built e-reader experience.

Read aloud and accessibility
Do not assume Alexa+ can read a Kindle book aloud through Kindle Assistive Reader: Amazon’s help page says, “Kindle Assistive Reader isn’t available on Alexa+.” Amazon separately describes Assistive Reader support in Kindle apps on Android and Fire tablets, but supported content and platform affect availability. Check the Kindle app’s accessibility options on your device for features available to the book you are reading.
