Short answer: PC and mobile players can play together through a vanilla dedicated server when every client and the server run compatible builds. Re-Logic’s September 24, 2026 update says Crossplay Phase One is still being finished, so do not assume a universal friend-list or automatic matchmaking system is already live. The documented practical route is to run a server, then have the mobile player use Join via IP, normally on port 7777.

What “Terraria crossplay” means right now

As of October 15, 2026, Terraria has two different ideas that are easy to confuse:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Crossplay Phase One: an official Re-Logic feature still described as being completed. In the September 24, 2026 State of the Game, Loki/Team Terraria wrote: “The rest of the team has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on Crossplay Phase One alongside a handful of lingering fixes that remain from 1.4.5.8.” The same post says, “Crossplay – Phase One should be in your hands in the near future!” That is a roadmap statement, not confirmation that a finished, platform-wide matchmaking service is available today.
  • Server-based PC/mobile multiplayer: the immediately usable workflow documented for connecting the editions is a vanilla dedicated server. The PC and mobile clients connect to that server over a local network or the internet.

Therefore, a friend invitation or platform account should not be treated as a guaranteed way to join a PC world from a phone. If the current game build does not expose that feature, use the dedicated-server method below.

Requirements checklist

Prepare these items before troubleshooting. Missing one of them is more likely to cause a failure than an obscure Terraria setting.

  • In Terraria, every world is unique-from the floating islands in the sky to the deepest level of The Underworld. Adventure to the ends of the earth, and defeat villainous bosses along the way. The world is your canvas!
  • A PC copy of Terraria for the player using the computer. Each player must have the appropriate edition for their device.
  • Terraria installed on each Android or iOS device.
  • The same compatible game build on the PC, all mobile devices, and the dedicated server.
  • The official dedicated-server package for the environment that will host the world. The Terraria site lists separate PC Dedicated Server and Mobile Dedicated Server downloads.
  • A world created or selected in the server application.
  • The server’s address and listening port. Port 7777 is the common value in the documented setup.
  • Firewall permission on the host computer.
  • For players outside the host’s home network, router port forwarding and a reachable public address, unless the server is running on an already-accessible hosted machine.
  • A vanilla client/server baseline for the first test. PC-only mod loaders and mod packs should be removed while establishing the connection because mobile compatibility is not established for them.

Choose the connection method

Dedicated server on the same LAN A household test or players sharing Wi-Fi That local network Moderate The host’s local address is usable only from that network.
Dedicated server exposed to the internet Friends in different homes Internet-accessible clients Moderate to high Firewall, router forwarding, public addressing, and ISP restrictions can block access.
Official Crossplay Phase One features Players after the feature is released and documented for their builds Determined by the released feature Not yet established as a finished workflow in the September 2026 update Do not rely on it until the current game build explicitly provides the required join or invite controls.

A dedicated server also separates the world from a player’s normal session. The server process must remain running for others to join. A hosted server can keep it online without leaving a home PC switched on, but the available plan, price, and cross-platform support must be checked with the provider at the time you subscribe.

Step 1: Make every version match

Version parity is the first diagnostic step, not an optional final check. Re-Logic’s release announcements show why: the January 2026 1.4.5 launch reached PC, console, and mobile except for the bespoke China Mobile edition, while an August 2026 update records PC 1.4.5.7 shipping before console and mobile submissions had completed. The September State of the Game also refers to remaining fixes from 1.4.5.8. A platform can therefore display “latest” while still being on a different build from another platform.

  1. Update Terraria through the normal store or launcher on the PC.
  2. Update Terraria on every Android or iOS device.
  3. Download or refresh the dedicated-server files after confirming the game build they are intended to serve.
  4. Open the game’s title screen or version information on each client and record the complete build number, not just the 1.4.5 major-and-minor label.
  5. Check the server console or startup output for its build identifier. Do not proceed until the builds are compatible.

If one platform has not received the same submission yet, waiting for that release is safer than trying to bypass the mismatch. A server cannot reliably make incompatible client builds communicate.

Step 2: Download the official dedicated server

Use the dedicated-server downloads on the official Terraria site. Its navigation exposes separate packages named PC Dedicated Server and Mobile Dedicated Server. Select the package that matches the operating environment hosting the world and the current Terraria release.

Start with a vanilla server

Do the first connection test with the unmodified server and unmodified clients. A PC mod loader can alter content, networking behavior, or the expected world format, and the available evidence does not establish that mobile clients can join those modded sessions. Once PC-to-mobile play works in vanilla, introduce changes one at a time only if every participating platform supports them.

Keep the server files together

Extract the package to a dedicated folder and keep its world files, configuration, and executable together. Avoid replacing only one file from a newer download; a mixed installation can produce confusing startup or compatibility errors. Back up the world before changing versions.

Step 3: Create and start the world

  1. Launch the dedicated-server application.
  2. Create a new world or select an existing world when the server prompts for one.
  3. Set a password if you do not want anyone who learns the address to enter. Share it only with the intended players.
  4. Confirm the listening port. The documented common value is 7777; record a different value if you deliberately change it.
  5. Leave the server process running. The world is available only while that process is listening.
  6. Note the host address that the joining player should use. For a same-home-network test, this is normally the host computer’s private or local IP address. For a remote friend, it is normally the host network’s public address or a name that resolves to it.

Use a simple world and a short test session first. This distinguishes a networking problem from a corrupted or unusually large world and makes it easier to discard the test without risking a main save.

Step 4: Allow the connection through the network

Testing on the same network

Put the PC and mobile device on the same home network, preferably the same Wi-Fi or wired LAN. Use the host computer’s local IP address and the server port. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, and some mesh-router settings prevent devices from talking to one another even when they appear to share a network. Temporarily testing from a normal, non-guest network can identify that condition.

Connecting from another home

For an internet connection, allow the Terraria server through the host computer’s firewall and forward the chosen port from the router to the computer running the server. Router screens use different names and layouts, so the exact menu path depends on the manufacturer. Confirm that the forwarded destination is the computer’s current local IP address; if that address changes, the rule can point to the wrong device.

Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT. In that arrangement, the household router does not receive a directly reachable public address, so ordinary port forwarding may not work. Ask the provider whether inbound connections are possible, use a network with a reachable address, or run the server on an appropriately configured hosted machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Join from the PC

On the PC, open Terraria’s multiplayer flow and choose the option that joins an existing server. Enter the server address and port when prompted, then supply the password if one was configured. The PC should connect to the same dedicated world that the mobile player will use; it does not need to be the machine hosting the server.

If the PC is on the same LAN as the server, test with the local address first. Once that works, test the internet address from an external network. This two-stage check avoids confusing a router problem with a Terraria or version problem.

  • 29 Different block types to build whatever you imagine!
  • NPCs and a swarm of enemies (over 150 types) including goblins, wyverns, unicorns, and-GASP-clowns!

Step 6: Join from Android or iPhone

  1. Open Terraria on the mobile device.
  2. Choose the multiplayer option.
  3. Select Join via IP. Do not wait for a platform friend list to discover the server.
  4. Enter the server address supplied by the host.
  5. Enter port 7777, unless the server operator changed it.
  6. Enter the server password if required, then connect.

The current practical setup guide documents this Join via IP and port-7777 workflow. 505 Games’ mobile support guidance says that, in general, mobile multiplayer works like non-Steam PC multiplayer Terraria, which is why an address-and-port connection is the appropriate baseline. If the address is local, the phone must still be on the host’s LAN; if it is public, the router and firewall must already be configured.

Can iPhone and Android play Terraria together?

Yes. 505 Games states that mobile multiplayer works across device families, including Android-to-iOS and phone-to-tablet connections. Those players can join the same mobile-compatible server, provided their builds are compatible and the network path is reachable. The same version and vanilla-baseline checks apply; cross-device support does not remove the need for a matching release.

Why Terraria says “incompatible host version”

This message normally means the client and the server are not on compatible builds. It is especially plausible when PC updates arrive before console or mobile submissions.

  1. Write down the complete version shown by the PC.
  2. Check the version shown on every mobile device.
  3. Check the dedicated server’s startup version.
  4. Update the out-of-date platform, or use a server package that matches the clients.
  5. Restart the server after replacing its files, then try again.

Do not begin with port forwarding when the error explicitly identifies a host-version mismatch. A reachable server still rejects an incompatible client.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Fix in the most useful order
The mobile device cannot see the world The player is waiting for discovery, the address is wrong, or the server is stopped. Use Multiplayer → Join via IP; verify the address, port, password, and that the server process is running.
“Incompatible host version” PC, mobile, and server builds differ. Compare the full build identifiers and update or replace the out-of-step installation.
LAN connection fails Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, a blocked firewall rule, or the wrong private address. Move both devices to the normal LAN, permit the server through the firewall, confirm the host’s current local IP, and retry.
LAN works but a remote friend cannot connect Missing port forwarding, wrong public address, firewall blockage, or carrier-grade NAT. Check the forwarding destination and firewall, verify the public address from outside the home network, and ask the ISP about inbound connectivity.
The server starts but the connection drops immediately Build mismatch, a damaged or mixed server installation, or unsupported modifications. Return to a backed-up vanilla world and matching server package, then test without mods.
One mobile family connects and another does not The devices may be on different mobile submissions or one device may be behind on updates. Compare exact versions rather than assuming Android and iOS store releases landed simultaneously.
Players cannot join after the host closes the terminal or application The dedicated-server process is no longer running. Restart the server and keep the hosting computer or hosted instance online for the duration of the session.

Mods, worlds, and safety considerations

Mod compatibility

Keep all participants on vanilla Terraria until networking is proven. There is no authoritative confirmation in the available guidance that PC-only mod ecosystems can be used by mobile clients. A modded PC client may fail even when the underlying address, port, and versions are correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

World backups

Back up the world before changing server versions or adding content. A version transition that can be played successfully is not the same thing as a safe, reversible save migration. Store a copy outside the active server folder so a failed update does not overwrite the only copy.

Password and exposure

A server reachable from the internet should have a password and should not be advertised publicly unless that is intentional. Share the address and password through a private channel. When the session ends, stop the server or remove the forwarding rule if you do not need a persistent world.

When to use a hosted server instead of a home PC

Home hosting is practical when one player can keep the computer running and configure the router. A hosted instance is useful when players live in different homes, the host is behind carrier-grade NAT, or the group wants the world available while the owner is offline. The trade-off is an ongoing service cost and another provider’s rules for backups, regions, resource limits, and supported server builds. Confirm that the service offers the exact Terraria edition and version required before moving a world.

A reliable setup sequence

For most groups, this order minimizes wasted troubleshooting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the desired PC/mobile combination is supported by the current builds rather than assuming Crossplay Phase One is already a universal service.
  2. Update every client and the server, recording complete version numbers.
  3. Install the official vanilla dedicated-server package.
  4. Start a disposable test world on port 7777.
  5. Join from the host PC using the local address.
  6. Join from a mobile device using Join via IP.
  7. If LAN play works, configure firewall and router access for remote players.
  8. Only after the baseline succeeds, restore the main world and evaluate any optional modifications.

This sequence isolates the four variables that most often get mixed together: release compatibility, server configuration, local networking, and internet reachability.
