Use Termux as the core of your DeX coding workspace, and add a graphical Linux desktop only when you actually need Linux GUI applications. Termux provides an Android terminal and Linux environment that can run beside other apps in Samsung DeX. A graphical desktop is a separate, community-maintained setup based on PRoot and Termux:X11; it is not required for shell-based development and is not a Samsung-supported DeX configuration.
Your exact Galaxy model, Android/One UI software, monitor connection and input hardware determine whether the workspace works as intended. Check those variables before installing anything, then build the simplest terminal workflow first.
Choose the right DeX coding architecture
There are two practical ways to combine Termux with DeX. The first keeps Termux in its native terminal interface. The second runs a Linux userspace under PRoot and displays graphical applications through Termux:X11. They solve different problems.

Start with the terminal path
For most coding tasks, open-source repositories, language runtimes, build tools and terminal editors can be used directly in Termux. A PRoot distribution is not a prerequisite for command-line coding. Starting without a desktop also makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from Termux, DeX, the display connection or an optional graphical layer.

Add a desktop only for a specific GUI requirement
Choose the graphical route if your workflow depends on a Linux windowed application, a desktop file manager or another GUI tool that cannot run comfortably in a terminal. Treat it as an additional layer, not as a replacement for Termux. Keep a terminal workflow available so you can still work when the X11 session or a particular application has compatibility problems.
Check the Galaxy device and desk hardware first
Samsung DeX requires a compatible Galaxy device, and the supported video-output method depends on that device. The general DeX connection model is a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet connected to a monitor, with a keyboard and mouse attached over Bluetooth or USB. Do not assume that an older device example on a Samsung information page is a current universal compatibility list.
- Identify the exact model. Record the model name or number and the installed Android and One UI versions.
- Confirm DeX support for that model and software. Use Samsung’s current device-specific information before buying an adapter or planning an external-display workflow.
- Confirm the display route. Depending on the hardware, this may involve a direct USB-C display connection or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX-compatible USB-C hub. Compatibility must be checked against the Galaxy model rather than inferred from the connector shape.
- Prepare input devices. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse make a coding workspace practical. A trackpad can work, but pointer behavior is governed by Android and DeX rather than by a conventional desktop operating system.
- Check power and ports. If the phone, monitor, keyboard, mouse and storage all compete for one USB-C port, plan the hub and charging arrangement before opening your development tools.
Use a simple preflight checklist
- Galaxy model and software version recorded
- DeX support and intended monitor connection verified
- Monitor input selected and cable or adapter available
- Keyboard and mouse paired or connected
- Enough free storage for Termux packages and any optional Linux userspace
- A backup plan for files stored on the phone
If any item is uncertain, begin with Termux on the device screen. That lets you validate the software side without treating an unverified monitor adapter as the cause of every later problem.
Install Termux without creating package-signature conflicts
Termux is an Android terminal application and Linux environment. Install the main app from one supported distribution channel documented by the Termux project, and install its plugins from that same channel. Android package signatures can prevent an app or plugin from installing, updating or working with a copy obtained from a different channel.
- Remove conflicting copies if necessary. If Android reports that an update cannot be installed because signatures differ, identify which Termux package is already installed. Do not repeatedly sideload a second copy over it.
- Install the Termux app from one supported source. Keep a note of that source for future updates.
- Install any Termux add-ons from the same source. This matters particularly if you later add the Termux:X11 Android companion application.
- Open Termux and allow only the permissions your workflow needs. Android may ask for storage access when you need to work with shared files.
- Update the package index before installing development tools. In a normal Termux session, the package manager commands
pkg updateandpkg upgraderefresh and update installed packages. Review the proposed changes rather than blindly accepting a prompt you do not understand.
Termux is not the same thing as a full desktop Linux distribution. Its native environment is enough for terminal development, while a PRoot userspace is an optional compatibility layer for software that expects a conventional Linux filesystem or desktop.

Keep the installation reproducible
Write down the Termux source, the date of installation and the packages you add. If you later rebuild the workspace after a reset, this record is more useful than trying to remember which add-on came from which channel. Keep project repositories in version control and copy important work to another location; a phone reset or an accidental removal of an app is not a substitute for a backup strategy.
Connect Termux to a DeX monitor and input devices
- Connect the monitor using the method supported by your Galaxy model. Select the correct monitor input and wait for DeX to start.
- Connect the keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth avoids occupying a USB port; USB input can be preferable when you need predictable latency or already have a suitable hub.
- Open DeX and launch Termux. The terminal can be used as a resizable DeX window alongside a browser, documentation, file manager or another coding utility.
- Test input before configuring tools. Type in the terminal, use the mouse to select text and switch between windows. Resolve a keyboard-layout or pointer issue now, before debugging a compiler or editor.
- Arrange a durable layout. Keep the terminal visible beside your editor or documentation, and use DeX’s window controls rather than assuming every Android application behaves like a desktop-native program.
A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a reasonable accessory category for a compatible device, but the adapter is not a universal requirement and cannot make an unsupported Galaxy model output video. A compatible USB-C hub may also be useful when you need charging and USB input at the same time.

The terminal workflow is the stable baseline. Use it to clone repositories, edit text, run tests and manage language tools. Exact package availability varies by the current Termux repositories and your chosen toolchain, so verify package names in the package manager rather than assuming that a desktop-Linux command will always have an identical Android package.
A practical first session
- Run the package update and upgrade commands described above.
- Create a clear project directory rather than scattering files through the application’s private directories.
- Install only the language runtime, version-control client and editor you need for the first project.
- Clone or create a small test project.
- Run its build or test command from the terminal and confirm that keyboard input, file access and output all behave normally in DeX.
- Open your documentation or issue tracker in another DeX window and switch between it and Termux while the test project runs.
For terminal editors, remember that Android may intercept some key combinations or navigation gestures. If a shortcut fails, test the same editor on the device screen and with a different keyboard connection. This distinguishes a DeX input issue from an editor configuration issue.
Decide whether you actually need PRoot
Stay in native Termux when your tools are command-line programs and your editor works in a terminal. Consider PRoot only when a tool specifically requires a conventional Linux userspace, package layout or graphical application. PRoot adds another filesystem and process-compatibility layer, so it can increase startup time and the number of places where a failure may occur.

Optional: add a graphical Linux desktop with PRoot and Termux:X11
A commonly discussed community setup runs a Linux userspace under PRoot and sends its graphical output through Termux:X11. It requires both sides of Termux:X11: the Termux-side component or package and the separate Termux:X11 Android companion app. Installing only one part does not create a working desktop.

This is community-maintained guidance, not a Samsung-supported DeX mode. Follow the current instructions from the upstream project you choose because package names, launch commands and display settings can change. Do not copy an old command sequence from a video or forum post without checking that it matches the current project.
Install the graphical layer in stages
- Make the native Termux terminal work first. If Termux cannot update packages or accept keyboard input, an X11 desktop will add confusion rather than solve the problem.
- Install or create the PRoot Linux userspace according to current upstream instructions. Select a distribution and desktop only after checking the storage and performance implications for your device.
- Install the Termux-side X11 component. Use the same Termux distribution source as the main app and any other Termux add-ons.
- Install the Termux:X11 Android companion app from the matching supported source. Keep its version aligned with the Termux-side component.
- Start the Android X11 companion and then launch the desktop session using the upstream project’s current procedure. A desktop that starts without a visible window usually indicates a display, session or environment-variable problem rather than a DeX monitor problem.
- Open the graphical session in DeX and test one application. Confirm pointer movement, keyboard input, window resizing and file access before installing a large collection of GUI software.
Understand what this layer does not guarantee
Running a Linux desktop through Termux:X11 does not turn Android into a conventional laptop operating system. Application compatibility, hardware acceleration, window management and background-process behavior can differ from a desktop Linux installation. Some applications may start but have unusable menus, incorrect scaling or unreliable input. Keep the terminal path available for administration and recovery.
Make DeX windows behave predictably
DeX builds on Android’s multi-window system. Samsung’s developer FAQ identifies requirements related to display density, mouse or trackpad interaction and resizable activities for applications that are expected to behave well in desktop-style windows. An application can open successfully and still refuse a useful width, redraw poorly or provide awkward pointer behavior if it was not designed for resizable desktop windows.

Termux will not install or update
- Check whether an older Termux app or plugin came from a different distribution channel.
- Do not mix signatures. Remove the conflicting package only after backing up project files and confirming that you know which source you will use going forward.
- Reinstall the main app and its add-ons from the same supported source, then update packages.
DeX does not appear on the monitor
- Recheck the Galaxy model’s DeX and external-display support.
- Verify the monitor input, cable and adapter or hub.
- Test the phone on its own screen and with the same adapter on another known-compatible display if available.
- Do not infer that a working charge connection also supports video output.
The terminal works but the X11 desktop is blank
- Confirm that the Android Termux:X11 app is installed and running.
- Confirm that the matching Termux-side component is installed.
- Use the current upstream launch instructions for the PRoot desktop and display settings.
- Test a minimal graphical application before starting a full desktop session.
Performance or battery life is poor
- Close unused DeX windows and stop background sessions.
- Prefer native Termux for command-line work instead of leaving a full desktop running.
- Use a powered hub or charger when the display and USB peripherals draw power through the phone.
- Keep large builds and caches under control; mobile storage and thermal limits are different from those of a desktop computer.
Use a workflow that survives interruptions
Save work in version control and push or copy it to storage you control outside the phone. Treat the DeX session as a convenient interface, not the only copy of a project. Before disconnecting the monitor, stop long-running commands cleanly and save editor buffers. If Android suspends or closes a background process, the terminal and project files should still be recoverable.
For routine development, open Termux in DeX, keep documentation in a second window and use the keyboard and mouse for navigation. When a GUI-only tool is required, start the X11 companion and PRoot session for that task, then return to native Termux for package maintenance and shell work. This division limits the number of components that must be working at once.
When this setup is the right choice
Termux plus DeX is a good fit when portability, a physical monitor and command-line tools matter more than a full laptop operating system. It is less suitable when your project depends on desktop-only drivers, constant background services, specialized hardware acceleration or applications that are not compatible with Android window management. In those cases, DeX can still serve as a terminal or remote-access screen, but it should not be presented as a universal desktop replacement.
