Install Tailscale while you still have your cloud provider’s console or bootstrap SSH access, then use the VPS’s 100.x Tailscale address or MagicDNS name for private administration. The basic installation is curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh followed by sudo tailscale up. Authenticate the URL that command displays, verify the machine in the admin console, and only then reduce public firewall exposure. From there, you can enable Tailscale SSH, advertise private subnets, or offer the VPS as an exit node—each role has different forwarding, policy, and recovery requirements.

What Tailscale changes on a Linux VPS

A normal VPS is reached through a provider-assigned public address. You must expose SSH (usually TCP port 22) to some internet addresses, maintain firewall rules, and protect a password or public-key login. Tailscale adds the VPS to your tailnet through an encrypted mesh. Enrolled devices receive stable 100.x addresses and, when enabled, MagicDNS names. Connections are authorized by tailnet policy rather than by making every service public.

Installing the client does not automatically turn the VPS into a router or hide every existing listener. A regular tailnet member can receive connections to services bound on the VPS. Tailscale SSH replaces the normal SSH exposure path for administration. A subnet router forwards traffic to other machines that do not run Tailscale. An exit node forwards a client’s ordinary internet traffic through the VPS. Decide which behavior you need before changing forwarding or advertising routes.

Choose the operating mode first

Mode What the VPS does Public SSH requirement Authentication and policy Traffic scope
Ordinary tailnet member Receives connections to services on the VPS Can be removed after tailnet access is proven Device identity plus tailnet access rules; service authentication still applies Only the VPS’s own Tailscale address and permitted services
Tailscale SSH Provides SSH through the Tailscale interface Port 22 need not be internet-reachable for tailnet administration Tailnet policy grants and node keys; test a non-root account first Interactive SSH sessions to the VPS
Subnet router Forwards tailnet traffic to non-Tailscale machines Not required for routed private networks Approved advertised routes plus access rules Only the CIDRs you advertise
Exit node Forwards a client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic Not required for client internet egress Exit-node approval and policy access, including autogroup:internet where required Client-selected internet traffic; LAN access is off by default

Do not advertise a broad network merely because the VPS can route it. Use the smallest CIDR that covers the systems tailnet users actually need, and document who owns that network.

Prerequisites and a safe rollout

  • A supported Linux VPS distribution, root or sudo access, and working provider console or initial SSH access.
  • A tailnet account where you can authenticate a new machine and approve routes or an exit node.
  • A recovery path that remains available until a Tailscale connection and the required service have both been tested.
  • Cloud firewall access. Keep only the bootstrap and application ports that are genuinely needed; do not remove recovery access before verification.
  • For routing roles, permission to change IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding and to modify the tailnet policy.

The Linux installation documentation was last validated January 5, 2026. The supported install script covers Ubuntu and Debian families, RHEL, CentOS and Fedora derivatives, Raspberry Pi OS, Amazon Linux, openSUSE and SUSE, Oracle Linux, and VMware Photon OS. Other distributions can use a manual package installation or a static binary.

Install Tailscale on the VPS

Use the supported installer

  1. Open the cloud provider’s emergency console or initial SSH session. Keep it open while testing.
  2. Run the installer as a shell user with permission to use sudo:
curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh
  1. Bring the node up:
sudo tailscale up

The command prints a sign-in URL. Open it in a browser, authenticate to the intended tailnet, and authorize the VPS. Return to the VPS after the browser confirms enrollment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use packages or a static binary when required

Piping a downloaded script to a shell may not fit an organization’s change-control rules. Install the package through the distribution’s documented repository or package method instead, then run sudo tailscale up. For a distribution without a suitable package, use the Tailscale static binary, start tailscaled with an explicit state file, and then run the same tailscale up command. The exact package and service-management commands depend on the distribution; do not substitute a package for a different release family.

Verify enrollment before closing public access

  1. Check local peer and address information:
tailscale status

Confirm that the VPS appears as connected and has a 100.x address. In the admin console, open the Machines page and confirm the expected hostname, operating-system identity, and last-seen state.

  1. From an already enrolled client, connect to the VPS using its 100.x address or MagicDNS name.
  2. Test the exact service you intend to use: for example, an SSH login as a non-root administrative user or an HTTP request to a private application bound on the VPS.
  3. Check that the tailnet access policy permits the source device, user, destination tag or hostname, and destination port. A connected node can still be denied by policy or by the VPS’s local firewall.
  4. Review the VPS service’s own logs and listener address. A daemon bound only to 127.0.0.1 will not be reachable through the Tailscale interface unless you deliberately change its bind configuration.

Only after these tests succeed should you narrow the provider firewall. Retain the provider console and document how to restore access if the tailnet node is logged out, its key expires, or a policy change blocks administrators.

Option 1: use Tailscale SSH for private administration

Tailscale SSH is a built-in SSH service that uses tailnet policy and Tailscale node keys for authentication and authorization. It is documented for Linux devices and available on all plans. It allows you to move administration away from a broadly reachable TCP port 22 without abandoning SSH clients or shell workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable and test it

  1. On the enrolled VPS, enable the service:
sudo tailscale set --ssh
  1. Define the required SSH grants or ACL rules in the tailnet policy. Grant only the administrators and destination tags that need access.
  2. From an enrolled client, connect to the VPS’s MagicDNS name or 100.x address. Test a non-root account first.
  3. Confirm that commands, file transfer, and any required automation work before changing the provider firewall.
  4. Remove broad public access to port 22, or restrict it to a tightly controlled bootstrap source. Keep the provider console as an out-of-band recovery path.

Tailscale SSH controls the path to the VPS; it does not automatically grant root privileges, bypass Unix account permissions, or secure an application exposed on another port. Continue to use least-privilege accounts, host updates, and local firewall rules.

Option 2: make the VPS a subnet router

A subnet router is appropriate when tailnet devices must reach servers, printers, databases, or other equipment that cannot run Tailscale. The VPS becomes a forwarding point between the tailnet and one or more private network prefixes. If every destination can run Tailscale, direct installation is usually simpler and avoids creating a transit device.

Configure the routing path

  1. Install and enroll Tailscale on the VPS as described above.
  2. Enable IPv4 and, when needed, IPv6 kernel forwarding in the Linux networking configuration. Apply the setting using the distribution’s normal persistent sysctl and service procedures, then verify the running kernel values.
  3. Advertise only the target network prefixes with --advertise-routes. For example, replace the example CIDR with the private network you actually own:
sudo tailscale up --advertise-routes=192.0.2.0/24

192.0.2.0/24 is documentation space, not a usable production network; substitute your real CIDR. If the node is already configured, include the desired settings in the command so you do not unintentionally discard existing options.

  1. In the admin console, approve the advertised route. An advertised route is not necessarily active until an administrator approves it.
  2. Add or update tailnet access rules so the intended users and devices can reach the routed CIDR and ports.
  3. From a different tailnet device, test a real destination behind the VPS. Check both directions where the application requires them, return traffic, host firewalls, and any network ACL between the VPS and the destination.

Limitations and safeguards

  • Kernel forwarding is the normal Linux mode. Netstack behavior differs and should not be assumed to provide the same routing semantics.
  • The destination network needs a valid return path. If it does not know how to return traffic to tailnet clients, configure an appropriate route or source NAT only when that design is understood and documented.
  • Do not advertise 0.0.0.0/0 as a subnet route when you mean to provide an exit node; use the exit-node feature instead.
  • Use separate, narrow advertisements for separate trust zones. A single broad CIDR can expose systems that policy authors did not intend to publish.
  • Monitor forwarding and VPS resource use. Tailscale does not provide a universal throughput or latency guarantee for every VPS provider, region, kernel, or workload.

Option 3: use the VPS as an exit node

An exit node sends a selected client’s ordinary internet traffic through the VPS. Websites and other internet services then see the VPS’s public egress address rather than the client’s local address. This is different from a subnet router: the client chooses an exit node, and only that client uses it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advertise and approve the exit node

  1. Enable IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding on the VPS and verify that the cloud firewall and Linux firewall permit the forwarding design.
  2. Advertise the exit-node capability:
sudo tailscale up --advertise-exit-node
  1. Approve the VPS as an exit node in the admin console.
  2. Ensure the tailnet policy grants the intended users or groups access to autogroup:internet where that grant is required.
  3. On each client, separately select the VPS as its exit node. Advertising it does not force every client to use it.
  4. Verify the client’s public egress address from the client itself, then test DNS, required applications, and any corporate split-routing expectations.

Local-LAN access is disabled by default when a client uses an exit node. If the client must continue reaching its local network, enable the client option --exit-node-allow-lan-access and confirm that the resulting route is acceptable for the security policy.

Exit-node decisions

  • Account for the VPS provider’s bandwidth limits, egress charges, and acceptable-use rules.
  • Understand that the exit node sees the forwarded traffic metadata and becomes the public source address; operate it only where you control the VPS and its logging.
  • Do not treat an exit node as an anonymity service. The tailnet still identifies the client, and internet destinations can use cookies, accounts, browser fingerprints, or other signals.
  • Measure your own workload if performance matters. There is no single throughput or latency number that applies to all Linux VPS environments.

Authentication for automation

Interactive browser authentication is suitable for a first setup. Provisioning systems and image builds need a non-interactive method. Use a narrowly scoped, supported auth key or workload-identity flow, restrict it to the required tags and lifetime, and keep the credential out of shell history, cloud-init output, CI logs, tickets, and process listings. Prefer a secret manager or the automation platform’s protected variables.

Keys, expiry, updates, and recovery

Reauthentication and key expiry

Tailscale devices periodically require reauthentication. When a legitimate VPS needs a new login, run:

sudo tailscale up --force-reauth

Follow the displayed authentication URL and repeat the verification steps. Disabling key expiry can prevent unattended interruptions on a trusted, tightly controlled device, but it reduces a valuable security control and should not be the default. Revoke the node’s keys promptly when the VPS is retired, rebuilt outside your control, or suspected of compromise.

Hardening checklist

  • Keep the operating system, Tailscale client, and installed services updated.
  • Use a non-root administrative account and restrict sudo to required operations.
  • Limit the cloud-provider firewall to bootstrap access and genuinely public application ports; use tailnet policy for private services.
  • Apply local host-firewall rules to the Tailscale interface and forwarded networks, not just the public interface.
  • Review Machines, route approvals, tags, grants, and exit-node permissions periodically.
  • Document provider-console access, the expected MagicDNS name, administrator accounts, policy location, and the exact steps to force reauthentication or revoke the node.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The installer or service fails

  • Confirm the distribution and architecture are supported and that the VPS can resolve DNS and reach the package or download endpoints.
  • Check that the install command completed and that the Tailscale service is running under the distribution’s service manager.
  • On an unsupported distribution, use the documented manual package or static-binary path rather than forcing a package for another release.

The VPS appears offline or has no usable address

  • Run tailscale status and inspect service logs.
  • Check system time, outbound firewall rules, and whether the node is awaiting browser authentication.
  • Use the provider console if a network change or reauthentication removed your only remote path.

SSH is denied after enabling Tailscale SSH

  • Confirm the client is enrolled in the same tailnet and is using the VPS’s 100.x address or MagicDNS name.
  • Review the grants or ACLs for the source identity, destination, and SSH capability.
  • Test a non-root account and verify that the Unix account exists and is permitted to log in.
  • Restore the provider-console path while correcting policy; do not repeatedly remove security controls without identifying the denial.

A subnet route is advertised but unreachable

  • Verify that an administrator approved the route and that the client policy allows the destination CIDR.
  • Confirm IPv4 or IPv6 forwarding is enabled in the running kernel, not only in a configuration file.
  • Check the VPS’s local firewall, the destination host firewall, and the return route.
  • Look for overlapping CIDRs on the client. An existing local route can win over the advertised route.

The exit node does not change internet egress

  • Confirm the VPS was approved as an exit node and that the client selected it; advertising alone is insufficient.
  • Check policy access to autogroup:internet, forwarding, and the client’s active route state.
  • Verify the public address from the client, not from the VPS console.
  • Remember that local-LAN access is disabled by default and may require --exit-node-allow-lan-access.

Which setup should you use?

Choose ordinary membership when only services on the VPS need private access. Add Tailscale SSH when your goal is tailnet-only administration and a controlled transition away from public port 22. Choose a subnet router for specific private CIDRs containing devices that cannot run Tailscale. Choose an exit node when selected clients must send ordinary internet traffic through the VPS. These roles can coexist, but every additional advertised route or forwarding function increases the policy and monitoring surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Tailscale without exposing SSH permanently?

Yes. Use the provider’s initial console or bootstrap SSH access, enroll and verify the VPS, test Tailscale SSH or ordinary tailnet access, then restrict public port 22. Keep the provider console as recovery access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does installing Tailscale automatically make the VPS a subnet router or exit node?

No. Those roles require forwarding, explicit route or exit-node advertisement, administrative approval, and matching tailnet policy.

How do I force a VPS to authenticate again?

Run sudo tailscale up --force-reauth, complete the displayed sign-in flow, and repeat connectivity tests.
