To set up Steam Frame, power it with a suitable adapter, complete its headset update, connect it to your network and Steam account, install the current Steam and SteamVR software on your PC, then pair the included wireless adapter. After pairing, select your PC from the Steam menu in the headset; SteamVR launches on the computer and Steam Frame operates as a wireless SteamVR headset.
The dedicated 6 GHz adapter is the preferred connection. Steam Frame can also stream through home Wi-Fi, but Valve describes that route as more congested and less reliable. The sections below give the complete first-time setup, exact menu paths, placement guidance and recovery steps for common failures.
What you need before starting
Headset, power and account
- Steam Frame and its included wireless adapter.
- A power adapter rated for at least 27 W. Valve recommends 45 W for the headset.
- A Steam account that you can use on both the headset and the host PC.
- A local network available during initial setup so the headset can sign in and download updates.
Steam Frame ships in a special mode, so it must be connected to power before the normal first-run flow can begin. Do not treat the first boot like an already-configured headset: leave it connected while it checks for and installs its initial software.
Host PC
- Install Steam on the computer that will run your VR games.
- Install SteamVR through Steam and update both applications before pairing.
- Have an available USB 3 port for the wireless adapter. An unobstructed port is preferable to one behind a metal panel or crowded by other equipment.
Valve’s current documentation recommends opting into the Steam Frame, Steam client and SteamVR beta channels when you want the latest compatibility fixes. Beta software can change more frequently than the default releases, so use the channels consistently on the PC and headset rather than mixing old and new components.

Choose how Steam Frame will reach the PC
| Connection method | How it works | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included 6 GHz wireless adapter | The adapter creates a dedicated direct link between the headset and the host PC. | Default choice for regular SteamVR play. | Requires a USB 3 connection on the PC and sensible placement with a clear path to the playspace. |
| Home Wi-Fi | The headset and PC communicate through the existing local wireless network. | Fallback when the adapter cannot be used or is being repositioned. | Home networks can be more congested and less reliable than the dedicated adapter path. |
You can keep Wi-Fi configured even when the adapter is installed. For the first connection, however, use the dedicated adapter unless there is a specific reason not to; it removes one source of household-network contention while you verify the headset, account and SteamVR installation.
Step 1: power on and complete the headset update
- Connect Steam Frame to power using an adapter that meets the power requirement above.
- Press the headset’s power button.
- Follow the in-headset setup screens and allow the initial update to finish.
- When prompted, reboot the headset. The restart is part of the setup rather than a sign that the update failed.
- Sign in to Steam with the account you intend to use for PC streaming.
Keep the headset powered throughout the update. If it appears to remain in its shipping mode, verify the power connection first, then press the power button again. A partial first boot can leave later pairing steps unavailable until the update and reboot have completed.
Step 2: connect Steam Frame to the network
- During the first-run screens, open the network selection page.
- Choose your local network and enter its password with the headset’s virtual keyboard.
- Wait for the headset to confirm that it is online before continuing to account and update screens.
The network connection is needed for sign-in and downloads even if you plan to use the dedicated adapter for VR streaming. After setup, network management is available in the VR Dashboard at Steam Settings > Internet. Use that page to change networks rather than restarting the entire setup process.
If the network does not appear
- Move temporarily closer to the access point and rescan the network list.
- Check the password carefully, including capitalization.
- Confirm that the access point is allowing new devices and that another device can reach the internet through it.
- Finish the headset update over a working network before troubleshooting the wireless adapter; adapter pairing cannot replace the internet connection required for first-run downloads.
Step 3: prepare Steam and SteamVR on the PC
- Open Steam on the host PC and sign in to the same Steam account used on Steam Frame.
- Install SteamVR if it is not already in your Steam library.
- Update Steam and SteamVR. If you are following Valve’s current beta recommendation, opt into the Steam Frame, Steam client and SteamVR beta channels before attempting the first pairing.
- Close any older VR session so SteamVR can discover the newly installed wireless device cleanly.
There is no complete consumer PC minimum-spec table in the Valve pages used for this setup procedure. Do not infer a graphics-card, processor or memory requirement from the wireless steps alone; use the requirements for your particular VR titles and the current SteamVR documentation when evaluating the host computer.

Step 4: install the wireless adapter
- Plug the included wireless adapter into a USB 3 port on the host PC.
- Place it where it has as clear a line of sight to the playspace as practical. You can do the final positioning after the first successful connection.
- Launch SteamVR on the PC.
- Accept the driver-install prompt when SteamVR displays it.
The driver prompt normally appears the first time SteamVR sees the adapter. If it does not appear, reboot the PC and start SteamVR again. If the prompt is still absent, restart Steam Frame, verify that both devices are using the same Steam account, and repeat the launch with the adapter connected directly to USB 3.
Positioning the adapter
Valve’s support guidance recommends clear line of sight and keeping the adapter within approximately 20 feet of the playspace. Avoid hiding it behind the PC case, under a desk, inside a cabinet or next to large obstructions. If the computer must remain farther away, an optional USB 3.0 extension cable can help you place the included adapter in a more open location; the cable is not stated as a required accessory or as an item included with Steam Frame.
Step 5: pair the headset and adapter
- When SteamVR or the headset presents the pairing request, choose Pair.
- Read the pairing code shown inside the headset.
- Enter that code with the headset’s virtual keyboard.
- Wait for the PC and headset to confirm the pairing.
If the automatic request is skipped, open the manual pairing page on the PC: Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter. Start the pairing flow there and enter the code displayed in the headset.

What a successful pairing looks like
After pairing, Steam Frame is associated with the host PC and the adapter driver is installed. Pairing is not the same as starting a VR session: you still choose the computer from the headset’s Steam menu in the next step.

Step 6: start SteamVR streaming
- Put on Steam Frame and open the Steam menu in the VR Dashboard.
- Select the name of the host PC you paired.
- Wait while the headset launches SteamVR on the computer.
- Confirm that SteamVR recognizes Steam Frame before launching a game.
Valve describes the result this way: “Once paired, under the Steam Menu in the VR dashboard you should see your PC’s name. Click your PC’s name to connect. This will launch SteamVR on your PC, and your Steam Frame should now act just like any normal wired headset (sans wires).”
When SteamVR is launched from the PC, Valve says it can automatically reconnect to the last wireless headset. If you have more than one VR headset available, close or disconnect the other one while testing so SteamVR has an unambiguous device to select.
Using home Wi-Fi instead of the adapter
Home Wi-Fi streaming is supported, so the adapter is not the only possible path. The headset and host PC must be on the same reachable local network, and the headset must already be able to reach Steam. From the VR Dashboard, manage the headset’s network at Steam Settings > Internet, then select the PC from the Steam menu when it is available.
Expect more congestion and less reliability than with the dedicated 6 GHz adapter, particularly when other household devices are using the same wireless network. Wi-Fi is therefore best treated as a fallback or a diagnostic option. If streaming works through the adapter but not through Wi-Fi, the headset and SteamVR installation are probably functioning; investigate the home network rather than repeating the pairing process.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The headset will not leave its initial setup mode
- Reconnect power and confirm that the adapter meets the stated wattage requirement.
- Press the power button and allow the update to finish without removing power.
- Complete the requested reboot, then sign in to Steam.
Do not move on to adapter pairing until the headset has completed these steps. Pairing controls may not be available in the shipping state.
The headset cannot get online
- Return to the network selection screen and re-enter the password.
- Move closer to the access point during setup.
- Verify internet access from another device and check whether the access point is blocking new clients.
- Once online, leave the headset connected long enough to download its updates before attempting SteamVR.
No driver or pairing prompt appears on the PC
- Confirm that Steam and SteamVR are updated, including the recommended beta channels if you chose to use them.
- Reboot the PC with the adapter still available.
- Restart Steam Frame.
- Check that the same Steam account is signed in on both devices.
- Open Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter and start manual pairing.
A missing prompt is usually a discovery or software-state problem, not evidence that the headset cannot stream. Rebooting gives SteamVR another opportunity to install or load its adapter driver.
The adapter pairs, but the connection is unstable
- Move the adapter to an unobstructed USB 3 connection.
- Place it in open space with a clear line of sight to the playspace.
- Keep it within approximately 20 feet of the playspace, as recommended by Valve.
- If the PC location makes that difficult, use an optional USB 3.0 extension cable to reposition the adapter.
- Prefer the adapter over home Wi-Fi while diagnosing; Wi-Fi introduces household-network congestion as an additional variable.
The PC name does not appear in the headset
- Confirm that SteamVR is installed and running on the intended host PC.
- Check that the adapter is connected and its driver prompt was accepted.
- Restart both the headset and SteamVR, then check the Steam menu again.
- Verify that the headset and PC use the same Steam account.
If a wired headset is connected to the PC, unplug it temporarily. Valve notes that a wired headset may need to be disconnected so SteamVR reconnects to Steam Frame.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wi-Fi works intermittently while the adapter works
That behavior is consistent with the two connection paths having different reliability. Keep using the dedicated adapter for normal play and reserve Wi-Fi for situations in which the adapter cannot be positioned or connected. Re-pairing the adapter will not remove congestion from the home network.

SteamVR reconnects to the wrong headset
Disconnect the other headset, including any wired headset, before launching SteamVR. Valve says SteamVR can reconnect automatically to the last wireless headset; removing competing devices makes that selection predictable. After Steam Frame is the only available headset, launch SteamVR from the PC and select the PC name again in the headset if necessary.
Final verification checklist
Use this checklist before launching a demanding VR title:
- Steam Frame completed its first update, reboot and Steam sign-in.
- The headset is online and its network can be managed from Steam Settings > Internet in the VR Dashboard.
- Steam and SteamVR are installed and current on the host PC.
- The wireless adapter is connected through USB 3 and its driver installation was accepted.
- The pairing code was entered successfully, or manual pairing was completed at Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter.
- The host PC’s name appears in the headset’s Steam menu.
- Selecting that name starts SteamVR on the PC.
- The adapter has a clear path to the playspace, or you have deliberately chosen the home Wi-Fi fallback.
- Any competing wired or wireless headset is disconnected while you verify the connection.
Which connection should you use?
For most setups, pair the included 6 GHz adapter, place it in open space near the playspace and use the PC name in the headset’s Steam menu to start SteamVR. Choose home Wi-Fi only when the adapter cannot be used or when you are deliberately testing the network path. This approach separates first-run account and update requirements from the later wireless-streaming choice, making failures easier to diagnose and recovery steps easier to follow.
