To protect a cozy game’s progress, enable Steam Cloud in both places Steam provides the setting, confirm that the individual game supports Cloud, and let Steam finish syncing before you switch devices. If progress is missing, first check the original computer for an unsynced local save. In a Cloud conflict, compare the timestamps and the device on which you played, then keep the copy that contains the progress you want.
Steam Cloud is not a universal save-file guarantee. Each developer chooses which files are uploaded, and some games keep saves outside Steam Cloud or do not make them usable across platforms. A separate manual backup is therefore worthwhile for important farms, towns, houses, and other long-running saves.
What Steam Cloud saves actually do
Steam Cloud synchronizes the user files that a game developer has configured for Cloud storage. When you play on one computer and Steam successfully uploads the covered files, another computer using the same Steam account can download them. The process is automatic only after the relevant settings are enabled and Steam can connect to its servers.
A game’s Store page can show that it supports Steam Cloud, but that label does not mean every save, configuration file, screenshot, mod, or piece of custom content is included. Developers select the files and locations that Steam synchronizes. Steamworks also allows different implementations, including restrictions by operating system, so a save that works on Windows is not automatically guaranteed to work on macOS or Linux. See the Steamworks Steam Cloud documentation for the developer-side explanation and the Steam Cloud FAQ for player-facing behavior.

Steam has two controls that must agree:
| Control | Where to find it | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Global Steam Cloud setting | Steam Settings > Cloud | Whether Steam Cloud synchronization is allowed for supported applications on the client. |
| Per-game setting | Library > right-click the game > Properties > General | Whether that particular game may use Steam Cloud on this computer. |
Menu labels can vary slightly by Steam client version, but the global Cloud control is in Steam Settings and the individual game control is in the game’s Properties under General.
Check these prerequisites before playing
- Use the same Steam account. Cloud files are associated with the account that played the game. Signing in with a different account will not expose the original account’s saves.
- Confirm Cloud support for the game. Open the game’s Store page and look for the Steam Cloud support indicator. Treat it as evidence of support, not proof that every save file or every operating system is covered.
- Know the game’s save model. The developer may document a local save path, a platform limitation, or a special transfer procedure. Follow that guidance for files that Steam Cloud does not cover.
- Be online when changing devices. Offline play postpones synchronization. A game played offline can leave a newer local file on one computer and an older Cloud file on another.
- Close the game normally. Give Steam time to process the changed files after you stop playing. Do not immediately shut down Steam or move to another computer while a sync warning is still present.
How to enable Steam Cloud for a game
1. Turn on the global Cloud setting
- Open the Steam client.
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Cloud.
- Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for supported applications.
- Close Settings so the change is applied.
This setting permits Cloud synchronization in general. It does not override a game-specific setting that is disabled.
2. Turn on Cloud for the individual game
- Open Library.
- Right-click the cozy game whose progress you want to protect.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General section.
- Check the game’s Cloud Synchronization option.
If the option is absent, disabled by the developer, or accompanied by a warning, check the game’s official support information before assuming that Steam will copy its saves.
3. Confirm what the game supports
Visit the game’s Steam Store page and confirm that Steam Cloud is listed. Then look for the developer’s documentation or a reliable support-community explanation of the exact save files and supported platforms. A game can synchronize one profile file while leaving screenshots, mods, or additional save locations on the local disk.
4. Complete a first sync safely
- Start the game on the computer that currently contains the correct progress.
- Play or make a small, intentional save if you need to verify the process.
- Exit the game normally.
- Leave Steam open and online until it finishes synchronizing. Do not launch the game on another computer while Steam is reporting that it cannot sync.
- Only after synchronization completes should you move to the second computer.
If Steam reports that it cannot sync, resolve the connection or synchronization problem first. Choosing to launch anyway can create a conflict because the two computers may then contain different changed copies.
How to verify that the right progress reached the Cloud
Steam’s Cloud status is meaningful only in context. The most reliable practical check is to quit the game on the original computer, wait for synchronization to finish, and then open the game on the other computer. Confirm that a recognizable recent change is present: for example, a newly completed in-game day, a newly crafted item, or another harmless test save.

Do not use a test that permanently changes an important file unless you have a backup. If the second computer opens an older state, quit without saving over it and return to the original computer. The original local files may still contain the newer progress even if the Cloud copy did not upload.

Resolving a Steam Cloud conflict without losing progress
A conflict means Steam found different changed files in the local installation and in the Cloud. It does not, by itself, prove that either copy is corrupt. Offline play, an interrupted upload, or playing on two computers before synchronization completed can all produce the situation.
Read the conflict dialog as a timeline
Steam shows timestamps for the local and Cloud versions. Compare each timestamp with your actual play history:
| What the timestamps show | Safer choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The local version is from the session in which you made the latest progress; the Cloud version is older. | Keep the local version. | The newest work is still on this computer and should be uploaded after the conflict is resolved. |
| The Cloud version is from a later session on another computer; the local version is an older copy. | Keep the Cloud version. | The Cloud copy reflects the later play session. |
| The timestamps do not match your memory or you cannot tell which session is newer. | Stop and preserve both copies before choosing. | An uncertain choice can overwrite the only copy containing your desired progress. |
The labels in the dialog may say local and Cloud, or use equivalent wording. The principle is the same: choose based on the session and progress represented by the timestamp, not on a blanket rule that local is always better or Cloud is always safer.
Use the original computer as evidence
If the computer on which you last played is available, leave it powered off or keep the game closed while you investigate. Do not save new progress on top of the questionable file. Locate the game’s local save according to the developer’s instructions and make a separate copy before accepting a conflict choice. This gives you a fallback if the selected version is not the one you intended.

- Cancel or postpone the decision if Steam allows it; do not select a version at random.
- Record or photograph the timestamps and note which device was used for each session.
- Preserve the local save folder on the computer that may contain the good progress.
- Check the game developer’s save-location and transfer instructions.
- Only then reopen Steam and select the version whose timeline matches your desired progress.
After selecting a version, let Steam complete synchronization before launching the game elsewhere. If you keep the local copy, Steam should upload it; if you keep the Cloud copy, Steam should download it to the computer.

Recover missing progress after moving to a new computer
When the old computer still works
- On the old computer, sign in to the same Steam account.
- Verify the global Cloud setting in Steam > Settings > Cloud.
- Verify the game’s setting in Library > right-click the game > Properties > General.
- Start and close the game once, then keep Steam online while it synchronizes.
- On the new computer, wait for Steam to finish processing the Cloud files before starting the game.
Steam Support specifically advises checking the original computer because progress that remained there may be unsynced. Do not erase or uninstall the old copy until the new computer has opened the expected save.
When the game does not use Steam Cloud
Some games keep saves in a developer-defined folder outside the files Steam synchronizes. In that case, enabling the two Cloud settings cannot make the missing save appear. Find the game’s official save-location instructions, close the game, copy the local save from the old computer, and place it in the corresponding location on the new computer. Preserve the new computer’s existing folder before replacing anything.
When neither computer shows the save
Check both devices’ local save locations and confirm that you are using the same Steam account and game installation. If the save is absent from both local copies and from Steam Cloud, do not assume Steam can reconstruct it. Steam Support states: “Steam Support can provide further clarification on how the Cloud system works, but they cannot recover lost saves or assist in resolving cloud conflicts.” The statement appears in the Steam Cloud FAQ.
Where Steam’s local Cloud data is stored
Steam Support lists these default userdata locations:
| Operating system | Default path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Inside userdata, Steam uses account identifiers and game app IDs rather than friendly game names. Do not delete or replace an unfamiliar folder simply because it looks unrelated. Identify the correct account and app ID, and use the game developer’s instructions to determine which file is the actual save.
Steam also records Cloud activity in cloud_log.txt under Steam’s logs directory. The log can help show whether Steam attempted an upload or download, but it does not turn an unsupported local save into a Cloud save and it cannot recreate a file that no longer exists.

Manual backups: what Steam’s Backup Feature can and cannot do
Steam’s Backup Feature is intended for backing up and restoring game installation files. It is not a complete save-game backup system. Steam warns that Valve-created game backups do not include saved games or custom content, and third-party games may keep those files in locations that must be copied separately. Not every game works with the Backup Feature either. The official instructions are in Using the Steam Backup Feature.
For a dependable manual save backup:
- Close the game and Steam, or at least ensure the game is not writing to its save.
- Find the save location from the developer’s official support information.
- Copy the entire relevant save folder, keeping its subfolders and file names intact.
- Give the backup a date-based name and store it separately from the computer, such as on a USB flash drive or another location you control.
- Do not replace the destination computer’s files until you have copied its existing save folder somewhere safe.
- Test the backup when practical by restoring it to the correct location and checking that the game can read it.
A USB flash drive is only a destination for a separate manual copy. It does not enable Steam Cloud, resolve a Cloud conflict, or automatically restore a save.

Steam Cloud is enabled globally but not for the game
Reopen the game’s Properties and check the General section. Both controls are required; changing only the global setting does not necessarily enable the game.
The Store page shows Cloud, but a save is missing
Check whether the missing item is one of the files the developer selected for synchronization. Screenshots, mods, custom content, profiles, and saves in a separate directory may be excluded. Use the developer’s documented path and transfer method instead of copying a random Steam folder.
You played in Offline Mode
Offline play delays Cloud synchronization. Return Steam to online mode, allow the computer with the desired progress to synchronize, and only then use another device. If a conflict appears, compare the timestamps with the offline session before selecting a copy.
Steam says it cannot sync
Do not launch the game merely to get past the message. First resolve the underlying connection or synchronization problem, then retry the sync. Launching while Steam has unsynchronized changes can create competing local and Cloud versions.

The new computer starts with an old save
Quit without saving over it. Check the old computer, confirm both settings, and let the old installation synchronize. If the old computer has no newer file, investigate the game’s non-Cloud save path and preserve any local files before replacing the new computer’s copy.
A restored save does not appear in the game
Confirm that the file belongs to the same game edition and operating system supported by the developer, that it is in the exact documented folder, and that the game was closed while you copied it. A save created by a different platform or game version may not be compatible even when the file transfer itself succeeds.
Cross-platform play needs game-specific confirmation
Steam supports Cloud integration across platforms, but each game decides how its files are written and whether a save can be used on another operating system. Before moving a cozy game between Windows, macOS, and Linux, check the game’s documentation for platform restrictions and save compatibility. The Steam Cloud indicator alone is not a promise of cross-platform progression.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When cross-platform transfer matters, use this order:
- Confirm that the game lists Steam Cloud support.
- Check the developer’s statement about the exact platforms and files supported.
- Finish a normal online sync on the original platform.
- Open the game on the destination platform without creating a new save first.
- If progress is absent, close the game and investigate the original local files rather than saving over the destination state.
A repeatable protection routine for long-running cozy games
- Keep the global Steam Cloud setting enabled.
- Check the per-game Cloud setting after installing or reinstalling a title.
- Confirm the Store page indicator and the developer’s save-file guidance.
- Play online when possible, especially before changing computers.
- Exit the game normally and wait for synchronization to finish.
- Keep the old computer available until the new computer opens the expected progress.
- Make dated manual copies of important saves in the game’s documented save folder.
- Preserve a local copy before accepting an unfamiliar conflict or replacing files.
- Test manual backups instead of assuming that a successful file copy is readable.
Following this routine separates three different jobs: Steam Cloud synchronization for supported files, manual copying for files Steam does not cover, and conflict resolution based on the actual play timeline. Treating them as interchangeable is what most often turns a recoverable save into an overwritten one.
