A reliable Starlink installation starts with a temporary test, not a drill. Unbox the dish, router, power supply and cables, place the dish where it has a broad view of the sky, and let the system connect before you choose a permanent mount. The Starlink app then helps you find obstructions, confirm alignment, set a Wi-Fi name and password, and check the connection.
For the best results, keep the dish elevated and close to vertical, protect its cable from bends and water, place the router in a central indoor position, and add mesh or a wired Router Mini only when the basic placement cannot cover the house. There is no single guaranteed speed or uptime figure: obstruction level, kit generation, plan, network load and geography all affect performance.
What you need before starting
Have the complete kit in front of you before choosing a location. A typical home installation includes the Starlink dish, router, power supply and the cables supplied for that kit. Do not assume that a cable or Ethernet accessory from another generation will fit; connectors and network options differ between kits.
- Use a phone or tablet with the Starlink app installed and Bluetooth and local-network permissions enabled.
- Have a grounded indoor power outlet available for the power supply and router.
- Prepare a temporary, stable surface outdoors or near a window-free opening where the dish can see the sky. The temporary position is for testing, not for a final roof installation.
- If you expect to use a third-party router, identify your kit generation first. Standard Actuated, newer Standard, Performance and Enterprise arrangements use different Ethernet paths.
- For a permanent installation, plan a safe route for the cable, a weather-protected wall or roof entry, and a mount that keeps the mast nearly vertical.
Keep the dish, power supply and router away from standing water while you test. Never work on a roof, ladder or exterior wall during wet or windy conditions; use a qualified installer when the mounting point is unsafe.

Run a temporary setup before mounting anything
A temporary connection tells you whether the service works at your property and whether the proposed dish location is viable. It also prevents a common and expensive mistake: drilling or roofing around a position that later proves to be obstructed.
- Unpack and identify each component. Set the dish, router and power supply on a dry surface. Inspect cables and connectors for cuts, crushed sections or bent contacts.
- Place the dish with the widest practical sky view. A clear yard, balcony or temporary pole is preferable to a position directly beside trees, chimneys or tall roof sections. Keep the dish stable so wind cannot move it during the test.
- Connect the supplied cables exactly as marked. Seat each connector fully; a partially inserted plug can look connected while causing intermittent service.
- Apply power and wait. Fixed-install guidance says the first connection can take up to 20 minutes. The dish may move while it acquires satellites, so do not force or hold it in place.
- Join the default Starlink Wi-Fi network. Open the app and follow its setup prompt. Choose a distinctive network name and a long, unique password. On older Gen 1 equipment, the initial network is not password-protected until you set one.
- Verify service before permanent work. Use the app’s connectivity or speed check, open several normal websites, and test from the rooms where you expect to work. A brief successful connection is not proof that a poor location will remain reliable, so complete the obstruction check next.
Use the Starlink app to find a clear view
The app’s obstruction tool is more useful than judging the sky from ground level. Open the tool at the proposed dish position and slowly scan the surrounding sky as instructed. It identifies objects that could interrupt the dish’s view as satellites pass through different parts of the sky.
What counts as an obstruction
Trees, roof ridges, chimneys, poles and nearby buildings can all block part of the field of view. A location that appears open from one direction may still have a narrow obstruction in another. Starlink states that the dish should be “100% unobstructed for best performance.” Treat that as a design target rather than accepting a location because it connects once.
Use alignment alerts, not guesswork
The app reports alignment conditions and prompts you to move or rotate the dish when necessary. Follow those alerts after the obstruction scan. A mast that is tilted substantially can complicate alignment and make a temporary setup less representative of the final installation.

- TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If not working, first check both connections are secure and restart your Starlink router.
When elevation is necessary
If trees or a roofline intrude into the scan, raise the dish with a suitable roof, pole or other approved mount. Extra height is useful only when it actually clears the obstruction; a taller but unstable pole can introduce movement and cable strain. Re-run the app scan after every meaningful change in height or position.
Select a permanent mounting approach
Do not permanently attach the dish until the temporary test and obstruction scan show that the service works from that position. Choose the option that gives the clearest view with the least cable exposure and the safest future maintenance.
| Mounting choice | Best use | Advantages | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roof mount | A roofline is the only practical way to clear trees or nearby structures. | Can provide substantial elevation and a broad view. | Requires safe roof access, careful flashing or sealing, and a route that protects the cable from weather. |
| Pole or mast mount | Ground, deck or wall installation where a clear vertical position is available. | Flexible height and easier access than many roof locations. | Must resist wind movement and remain close to vertical; long exposed cable runs need protection. |
| Pipe Adapter Mount | An existing compatible pipe or mast can be reused. | May simplify attachment when the pipe is sound and correctly sized. | Verify compatibility, structural strength and weather sealing before relying on the existing pipe. |
| Temporary stand | Initial testing or short-term use while you evaluate the property. | No drilling and easy repositioning. | More vulnerable to movement, theft, snow, animals and accidental cable pulls; not a substitute for a secure permanent mount. |
Whichever option you choose, keep the dish mast as close to vertical as practical. A higher position can clear trees and rooflines, but structural stability and safe access matter more than maximum height. Leave enough slack for normal movement without allowing the cable to hang where it can catch on a gutter, branch or walkway.
Route and protect the dish cable
The cable is part of the reliability system, not an afterthought. Plan the route before fixing the dish so the cable can enter the building without sharp bends, twisting, crushing or tension.

- Keep the bend radius gentle. Do not fold the cable tightly around a corner or force it behind a closed window.
- Prevent pulling. Secure the cable to the structure with appropriate clips or a protected route, leaving strain relief near the dish and indoor equipment.
- Protect the entry point. Use a weatherproof pass-through or routing device. Seal around a drilled entry according to the building material and local practice; water entering the wall can cause more damage than an intermittent connection.
- Keep connector ends dry. Do not leave an unplugged connector on wet ground. Cap or protect it while changing the layout.
- Do not crush the cable. Avoid staples, tight zip ties and doors that press on the jacket. Replace a cable showing cuts, flattened sections or exposed conductors.
- Plan service access. Leave enough accessible slack to disconnect equipment later without climbing onto an unsafe roof.
After routing, repeat the app’s connectivity check. A connection that fails only when the cable is moved points to routing or connector damage rather than a satellite or Wi-Fi problem.
Place the router for useful indoor coverage
The router should normally sit near the center of the occupied area, off the floor and in open air. Central placement shortens the average distance to phones, computers and smart-home devices and usually works better than hiding the router beside the dish cable entry.
Reduce indoor signal blockers
Keep the router away from concrete walls, large mirrors, metal cabinets and large pieces of furniture. Do not enclose it in a cupboard or place it behind a television where heat and obstructions accumulate. If the only cable entry is at an exterior wall, use the longest approved indoor cable run that lets you move the router toward the center.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse mesh only for a real dead spot
Walk through the home after the main router is configured. Check the rooms where people actually use the connection rather than judging coverage from a single hallway. Add a compatible mesh node when a wall, floor or distance creates a persistent dead spot. Position each node where it still receives a strong signal from the previous node, not inside the weak area it is meant to repair. Starlink guidance also calls for spacing nodes as recommended in the app; follow the placement prompts for your kit.

Serving indoor users from an outdoor Starlink Mini
If a Starlink Mini must remain outdoors while people use the connection indoors, use Ethernet to a Router Mini when the layout permits. Starlink describes wired Ethernet as the most reliable arrangement for an outdoor Mini serving indoor users because it avoids asking a wireless link to cross the exterior wall and additional indoor obstacles.
Use your own router when the kit supports it
Starlink supports third-party routers, but the physical wiring depends on the equipment generation. In every case, configure the third-party router’s internet or WAN interface for DHCP unless its manufacturer gives a specific alternative for your network.
| Starlink equipment | Ethernet path | Important setting |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Actuated | Starlink router → Starlink Ethernet Adapter → third-party router WAN | Use bypass mode when the Starlink router remains connected and the third-party router is intended to manage Wi-Fi. |
| Standard with native Ethernet | Connect the third-party router directly to the kit’s Ethernet port. | Use DHCP on the third-party WAN; bypass mode is used when the third-party router should control Wi-Fi. |
| Performance or Enterprise variants listed by Starlink | Ethernet from the power supply to the third-party router, following that kit’s diagram. | Use DHCP unless the kit documentation specifies otherwise. |
Configure bypass mode deliberately
Bypass mode turns off the built-in Starlink Wi-Fi so the third-party router becomes the wireless controller. Enable it only after the third-party router is connected and ready to obtain a DHCP address. Running two routers with separate Wi-Fi and routing functions can create confusing network behavior; bypass mode avoids that overlap when you want one router to manage the home network.
Recommended Free Tools
For Standard Actuated, Starlink says bypass mode is required when the Starlink router remains in the chain and a third-party router is controlling Wi-Fi. For Standard kits, use bypass mode when you want the third-party router to replace Starlink Wi-Fi. Record the third-party router’s administration credentials before changing the setting, because you may need them to recover the network.

When not to replace the router
Keep the Starlink router in normal mode if it already covers the home and you do not need advanced firewall, VLAN, parental-control or VPN features. Fewer devices mean fewer power supplies and fewer points of failure. Add a mesh node or reposition the router before buying a replacement solely to solve a placement problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnose dropouts and weak performance
Use the app before resetting anything. It can distinguish a service outage, obstruction warning and local Wi-Fi issue, which require different fixes.
| Symptom or indicator | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The app reports an obstruction or repeated short interruptions. | Dish view or mounting position. | Re-run the obstruction tool, remove the obstruction if possible, or raise and reposition the dish. Confirm the mast remains stable. |
| Router light flashes white. | The router is attempting to connect. | Wait through the initial acquisition period, then check all cable connections and the app for an outage. |
| Router light is solid white. | The router is connected. | If a device is still offline, test another device and move closer to the router to separate Wi-Fi coverage from service problems. |
| Router light is red. | The router is not connected. | Inspect every connector, look for cable damage, check app alerts and power-cycle the router. |
| Router light is violet. | Bypass mode is active. | Use the third-party router for Wi-Fi. If you need Starlink Wi-Fi back and cannot disable bypass normally, a factory reset may be required. |
| Only distant rooms are slow or disconnected. | Indoor Wi-Fi coverage. | Move the router centrally, remove blockers, then add a correctly spaced compatible mesh node or wired Router Mini. |
| Connection fails when the dish cable is touched or after rain. | Cable, connector or building entry. | Disconnect power safely, inspect for damage or moisture, dry and reseal the entry, and replace damaged cabling. |
Power-cycle before factory-resetting
- Check the app for a reported outage or service alert.
- Confirm the dish and router connectors are fully seated and the cable jacket is intact.
- Unplug the router’s power, wait briefly, and reconnect it.
- Allow the system to reconnect and check the app again.
- Use the reset pinhole only when these checks fail. A reset erases configuration, so you will need to set the Wi-Fi name, password and any router arrangement again.
A violet bypass light is a special case: the Gen 3 guidance says a factory reset is required to exit bypass mode. Plan for the network interruption before pressing the reset pinhole. If the problem remains after the reset and cable checks, contact Starlink support through the app or the official support site.

Official setup guidance does not establish one universal household speed, uptime percentage or latency value. Results vary with obstruction level, dish and router generation, service plan, regional network load and geography. Treat any speed test as a measurement of your connection at that moment, not a permanent guarantee.
For meaningful checks, test at different times of day and from both a wired device and a normal Wi-Fi device when possible. A wired result helps separate satellite service from indoor wireless limits. Keep notes of the date, location, device and test conditions before changing the installation; otherwise it is difficult to tell whether a mount, cable route or router move actually helped.
A practical final-installation checklist
- The temporary setup connected successfully, allowing up to 20 minutes for initial acquisition.
- The app’s obstruction scan shows a completely clear field of view, and alignment alerts are resolved.
- The selected mount clears trees and rooflines while keeping the mast close to vertical and stable.
- The cable route avoids sharp bends, crushing, tension and exposed connector ends.
- The building entry is weather-protected and leaves safe access for future service.
- The router is elevated and central, away from concrete walls, mirrors, metal enclosures and bulky furniture.
- Any mesh node is close enough to the main router to receive a strong signal, rather than being placed in the dead spot itself.
- A third-party router uses the correct Ethernet path for the kit and DHCP on its WAN interface.
- Bypass mode is enabled only when the third-party router is intended to manage Wi-Fi.
- The app shows no unresolved outage, obstruction or alignment alert after the permanent installation.
Following this order—temporary test, app-based obstruction check, secure mounting, protected cabling, central Wi-Fi placement and kit-specific router configuration—eliminates the most common causes of Starlink dropouts and dead zones without promising performance that the installation cannot deliver.
