On a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, open the first app on the inner display, open Recents, tap that app’s icon, choose Open in split screen view, and select a second app. You can then resize or swap the windows, save the combination as an App pair, add a third app on supported models, or turn an app into a floating pop-up. The exact menu names and app limits vary by Fold generation, country and One UI version.
What split-screen multitasking does on a Samsung Fold
Samsung’s Multi window system lets two apps share the large inner display instead of forcing you to switch between them. The divider between the windows can usually be moved, so one app can receive more space than the other. You can also create a three-app arrangement, float an app above the others in pop-up view, or use Flex mode when the phone is folded into an L shape.
Samsung UK describes split-screen view as supporting up to three apps at the same time. That is a general split-screen statement, not a guarantee for every Fold model. Samsung’s Fold6 Flex-mode guidance says a Galaxy Z Fold6 can open up to four apps in Multi window, while another Samsung support page says certain Z Fold models can handle up to five. Treat those figures as model- and software-specific capacities rather than a universal Fold specification.

Samsung’s current Fold instructions also warn that configurations, screen arrangements and menu labels can differ by country, model and One UI release. If a control described below is missing, use the troubleshooting section rather than assuming the phone is defective.

Before you start
- Use a Galaxy Z Fold with its large inner display unfolded. This guide is centered on the Z Fold layout; a Z Flip has a different screen shape and generally places apps above and below one another.
- Update the phone if a system update is available. One UI changes can move Multi window controls or alter which layouts are offered.
- Choose two apps that support Multi window. Samsung explicitly notes that some apps do not support it, and unsupported apps will not appear as choices or will not offer the split-screen command.
- For Edge-panel shortcuts, make sure the Edge panel is enabled. On supported models, go to Settings > Display > Edge panels.
- For gesture shortcuts, open Settings > Advanced features > Labs. Labs options are experimental and may not be present or may not work as expected.
Method 1: Start split screen from Recents
This is the most dependable method because it uses the app currently open and exposes Samsung’s explicit split-screen command.
- Unfold the phone and open the first app on the large inner display.
- Open Recents using your navigation button, navigation gesture or the Recents control in the taskbar, depending on your setup.
- Locate the first app’s preview card and tap the app icon above the preview.
- Tap Open in split screen view. If the command is not listed, the app may not support Multi window; see the troubleshooting steps below.
- Choose the second app from the recent-app list or the available app list. The second app opens in the remaining portion of the display.
The first app normally stays in the portion where it was selected, while the second app fills the other portion. The exact top-bottom or left-right arrangement depends on the phone’s orientation and One UI behavior.
Change the amount of space each app receives
Drag the divider between the two app windows. Moving it toward one side gives the other app more room. Some apps impose their own minimum usable width, so the divider may stop before an extreme edge.

Tap the divider to open its controls, then choose the swap-position control when it is offered. This is useful when the app you are reading or watching belongs in the larger area without rebuilding the pair.
Save the combination for later
When Samsung displays an App pair control on the divider toolbar, tap it to save the current combination. Depending on the model and launcher, you can add the pair to the taskbar, the Home screen or Apps Edge. Launching the saved pair opens both apps together, although an app update, a changed orientation or a software reset can alter the arrangement.
Method 2: Drag apps from the Edge panel
Apps Edge is faster when you already know which apps you want and use the same combinations repeatedly.

- Swipe left from the Edge-panel handle on the right edge to open Apps Edge.
- Touch and hold an app icon in Apps Edge.
- Drag the icon to a highlighted drop zone at the top, bottom, left or right of the display, then release it. The selected app opens in that area.
- Touch and hold another app in Apps Edge and drag it to the remaining drop zone.
- For a supported three-app layout, repeat the drag with a third app and place it in the offered zone.
Dragging toward the center can open an app as a pop-up instead of assigning it a fixed split-screen area. The drop zones shown by your phone determine which layouts are currently available.

Open Settings > Display > Edge panels and turn the feature on. Then open the panel settings and make sure Apps Edge is selected. Edge panels are available only on certain Samsung models, so a phone without the feature must use Recents or another supported entry point.
Build a three-app layout
Samsung UK’s support documentation says split-screen view can open up to three apps at once. On a compatible Z Fold, start with two apps using Recents or Apps Edge, then use the divider controls or drag another Apps Edge icon into the offered third zone. Samsung may arrange the three windows as one larger pane beside two stacked panes, or in another model-specific pattern.
- Open the first two apps in split screen.
- Tap the divider to reveal its toolbar, or open Apps Edge again.
- Drag a third supported app into the zone highlighted by the phone.
- Drag the dividers to balance the layout. Each app must retain enough width or height for its interface to function.
Three-app support is not the same as a promise that every combination will work. An app can support two-window Multi window but reject a three-window arrangement, and a layout that fits in portrait orientation may be unavailable in landscape.
Use pop-up view for a floating app
Pop-up view keeps an app in a movable, resizable window above another app. It is useful for a calculator, message thread, music controls or a short reference that you do not want to give a permanent half of the display.

Open a pop-up from Recents
- Open Recents.
- Tap the icon above the app preview.
- Choose Open in pop-up view.
- Move or resize the floating window with its top toolbar and window edges.
The toolbar can also maximize the app into a full-screen view or close the window. If the command is missing, that app or the current One UI build may not support pop-up mode.

Open a pop-up from Apps Edge
Open Apps Edge, touch and hold the app, and drag it toward the center of the display. Release when the pop-up target appears. The same toolbar controls let you move, resize, maximize or close the window.
Use Flex mode when the phone is partly folded
Flex mode is different from a flat, unfolded split screen. Fold the phone halfway into an L shape and place it on a stable surface. On supported models, the upper portion shows the current app while the lower portion provides Flex-mode controls or another app.
- Fold the Z Fold halfway until it holds an L-shaped angle.
- Open the Flex mode Apps screen if it appears.
- Select the second app. Samsung places it in the lower portion on supported configurations.
- Use Edge-panel dragging if you want to open a pop-up window or replace the app in the upper or lower area.
Flex mode compatibility varies by app. Some apps provide a specialized control layout, some simply remain in their normal interface, and others may not respond to the hinge angle. The number of simultaneous apps in Flex mode is model-specific; Samsung’s Fold6 guidance cites up to four apps in Multi window, while other support material cites higher limits for certain Z Fold models.
Enable gesture shortcuts in Labs
Samsung provides optional gestures for people who create Multi window layouts frequently. These settings are experimental, so Samsung cautions that Labs features may not work as expected and may be absent on some models.
- Open Settings > Advanced features > Labs.
- Turn on Swipe for split screen to enable the split-screen gesture.
- Turn on Swipe for pop-up view if you also want a floating-window gesture.
- Return to an app and test the gesture. Samsung’s Z Fold4 instructions describe a two-finger swipe from the bottom or a side edge to enter split screen, and a one-finger swipe inward from a top corner to create a pop-up window.
If a gesture fails, use Recents or Apps Edge. A narrow swipe, a conflicting navigation gesture or a missing Labs toggle can prevent recognition.
Useful app combinations
Samsung highlights several practical pairings. The best arrangement depends on whether one app is mainly for reference, input or playback.

Save combinations you use repeatedly as App pairs. For occasional tasks, Recents is usually quicker than maintaining a large collection of saved shortcuts.
Why “Open in split screen view” is missing
The app does not support Multi window
Samsung explicitly states that some apps may not support Multi window. When the app icon menu lacks Open in split screen view, try a different app to confirm that the phone’s feature works. There is no system setting that can force an incompatible app into a stable split window.
The phone or One UI version uses different labels
Menu names and screen arrangements vary by model, country and One UI version. Look for a command under the app icon in Recents, or use Apps Edge drag-and-drop instead of relying on an exact phrase. A current Fold guide may show controls that an older Fold does not have.
Labs shortcuts are unavailable
Labs is experimental. A missing Swipe for split screen or Swipe for pop-up view toggle does not remove the standard Recents and Edge-panel methods. Use those supported entry points instead.
Edge panels are disabled
If you cannot find the Edge handle, enable it at Settings > Display > Edge panels. On models that do not provide Edge panels, start the layout from Recents.

Three-app and larger layouts depend on both app compatibility and the available screen geometry. Remove a window, rotate the phone or use pop-up view for the least important app. An app that requires a minimum width can block a particular arrangement even when other three-app combinations work.

Resize, replace and close windows
Use the divider toolbar whenever you need to change the arrangement without starting over. Drag a divider to resize. Tap it to look for swap, App pair and other model-specific controls. To replace one app, close that window and launch another through Recents or Apps Edge.
To leave split screen, close one window from its toolbar or drag the divider all the way to an edge to maximize the remaining app. In pop-up view, use the window toolbar’s close button or maximize control. Closing one window does not uninstall the app or erase its data; it only ends that Multi window session.
How many apps can your Fold run?
Do not use a single maximum as a buying or troubleshooting rule. Samsung’s published figures describe different modes and models:
- Up to three apps in split screen: Samsung UK support, updated 5 March 2025.
- Up to four apps in Multi window on the Galaxy Z Fold6 Flex mode: Samsung US guidance published in 2026.
- Up to five apps on certain Z Fold models: Samsung US support material published in 2026; the statement is model-specific.
Samsung India’s multitasking guidance, updated 9 October 2026, describes two-way and three-way split views and emphasizes that the result depends on the model and software. Your phone’s offered drop zones and divider controls are the practical authority for the exact layout it can create.
Optional note-taking accessory
An S Pen Fold Edition can be useful when you keep Samsung Notes beside a browser, calendar or call. Verify pen compatibility for your exact Galaxy Z Fold generation before buying or relying on it; Fold models do not all support the same S Pen hardware.
If you have a Galaxy Z Flip instead
This guide focuses on the larger inner display of a Galaxy Z Fold. A Z Flip’s unfolded screen has a different aspect ratio and generally uses top-and-bottom placement rather than the broad side-by-side workspace shown on a Z Fold. The Recents, Apps Edge, pop-up and Labs commands can also vary by model and One UI version, so follow the options your phone actually displays.
