To use Smart DNS with a Roku player or Roku TV, get the Roku-specific DNS address from the Smart DNS provider you selected, enter it in your router’s DNS fields, save the change, and restart both the router and Roku. Roku does not provide a direct DNS-entry screen for this setup, and there is no universal Smart DNS address that works for every service.

What you need before changing anything

Smart DNS setup is a router task, not a Roku-menu task. The exact labels and location of DNS controls depend on the router model and firmware, so the instructions below use generic names rather than pretending every router has the same interface.

  • A Smart DNS subscription or account that explicitly supports Roku or Roku TV.
  • The provider-issued DNS address for Roku and, where applicable, the location you want to use.
  • Administrator credentials for your home router.
  • A phone or computer connected to that router’s network.
  • A few minutes when restarting the router will not interrupt important work.

Do not substitute a public DNS address, a VPN server address, or an address copied from another provider. Smart DNS addresses are service-specific. The provider’s current Roku instructions are the authority for the address and any required account registration.

Why the router must be configured

Roku devices do not let you enter DNS settings directly on the device, as the Roku-specific setup guide from Private Internet Access explains (Private Internet Access Support, July 6, 2026). Your router normally supplies DNS information to every device that joins the home network. Changing the router’s DNS therefore allows the Roku to receive the Smart DNS resolver without requiring a custom setting on the Roku itself.

Smart DNS is a DNS-and-proxy arrangement rather than an encrypted tunnel. The resolver detects domains associated with geographic restrictions and can return proxy-server addresses located in the relevant region. That mechanism is described in the academic paper Holes in the Geofence: Privacy Vulnerabilities in “Smart” DNS Services (Fainchtein, Aviv, Sherr, Ribaudo and Khullar, December 14, 2020).

This has two consequences that are easy to miss:

  • The router change can affect phones, computers, consoles and streaming boxes connected to the same router, not only Roku.
  • Smart DNS does not encrypt your traffic or hide the Roku’s public IP address. It should not be treated as a privacy replacement for a VPN (Private Internet Access Support).

Step 1: Get the correct Smart DNS address

Use the provider’s Roku workflow

Sign in to the Smart DNS service you chose and open its device or setup section. In the workflow documented by Private Internet Access, the sequence is to select Smart DNS, choose Roku TV, select a location, and record the address displayed for that configuration. Other providers may use different labels, require activation first, or show more than one address.

Record the address exactly, including every number and period. If the provider displays both a primary and secondary address, note which is intended for each field. If it displays one address only, do not invent a second one. Some routers allow the secondary DNS field to be empty; the cited Roku guide recommends entering the service address as primary DNS and leaving secondary DNS blank when that option exists.

Check whether your public IP must be registered

Some Smart DNS services associate your account with the public IP address of your home internet connection. Smart DNS Proxy’s Roku instructions, dated February 4, 2020, state that a changed public IP can require updating the address registered with the service (Smart DNS Proxy Support). That is older, provider-specific guidance, not a universal requirement. Check the current instructions for your provider before changing router settings, and update the registered IP through the provider’s dashboard if it asks you to.

Step 2: Open your router’s administration page

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the same home network used by the Roku. A wired connection is preferable if your router is difficult to reach over Wi-Fi, but it is not normally required.
  2. Open a web browser and enter the router’s administration address. Common addresses include 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, but your router may use another address.
  3. Sign in with the router administrator account. This is not necessarily the same password as your Wi-Fi password.
  4. If neither common address loads, find the router or default-gateway address in your device’s network details, or consult the router manual and manufacturer support.

Do not guess at advanced values or reset the router merely because the first address fails. A factory reset erases the existing Wi-Fi name, password and other settings and is not needed for ordinary Smart DNS configuration.

Step 3: Find the router’s DNS fields

Look in sections named Internet, WAN, Network, Broadband, DHCP, or Connection. The DNS controls may appear under an “Automatic” or “Obtain DNS automatically” choice that must be changed to “Manual,” “Custom,” or a similar option. Router interfaces vary by model and firmware; there is no single menu path that can be stated accurately for every device.

When you find the fields, compare what you see with this setup pattern:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Router field What to enter Important qualification
Primary DNS The exact Roku-compatible address supplied by your Smart DNS provider This is the provider’s value, not a universal public DNS address.
Secondary DNS Leave blank if the router permits it and the provider supplies only one address If the provider supplies a secondary address, follow that provider’s current instructions.
DNS mode Manual or Custom, if the router requires a mode selection The wording and location differ by router firmware.
Other WAN settings Leave unchanged Changing unrelated IP, gateway, MTU or routing values can disconnect the network.

Enter only the values supplied for your account or Roku configuration. If the router rejects the address, check for an omitted digit, an extra space, or a field that accepts IPv6 rather than IPv4. Ask the provider which address family it supports before changing IPv6 settings.

Step 4: Save the change and restart the network

  1. Choose Save, Apply, Submit, or the equivalent button in the router interface.
  2. Wait for the router to confirm the change. The internet connection may drop briefly while the router applies it.
  3. Restart the router if it does not reboot automatically. Use its normal restart control or power-cycle it according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not press the factory-reset button.
  4. After the router is back online, restart the Roku. On a Roku player or Roku TV, use the system restart control if available, or disconnect power briefly and reconnect it.
  5. Reconnect the Roku to the same home network if it reports that the network has changed.

Restarting both devices clears old network information and makes the Roku request DNS settings again. A browser or phone that was already connected may also need to disconnect and reconnect before it receives the new settings.

Step 5: Verify that the provider recognizes the setup

Open the Smart DNS provider’s setup or status page and follow its verification procedure. A successful router save does not by itself prove that the provider has authorized your public IP or that a particular streaming application supports the selected location.

If the provider reports that your network is not registered, check whether your internet service has assigned a new public IP and whether the provider requires an update. Smart DNS Proxy documents this possibility in its 2020 Roku article, but the current process may differ, so use your provider’s present dashboard and help documentation rather than copying old router-routing instructions.

Test the Roku application you intended to use, then test an ordinary application or the Roku home screen. This separates a DNS problem from an application or catalog limitation. Do not assume that changing DNS guarantees access to every regional catalog: availability depends on the provider, the application, the selected location and the service’s own controls.

If you cannot find a DNS setting

The router hides DNS behind an automatic setting

Some firmware shows DNS fields only after you change the connection mode from automatic to manual. Look through the Internet or WAN connection editor rather than the Wi-Fi-name page. Save a screenshot or note of the original values before editing so you can restore them if required.

The router supplied by your internet provider is locked down

ISP-managed equipment may prevent custom DNS entries or may overwrite them after a restart. Consult the router manufacturer or internet provider for model-specific support. Roku’s networking guidance also directs users to the router manual or manufacturer for configuration help (Roku Support, updated June 19, 2026).

You use a mesh system or separate access point

Enter the DNS values on the device that performs routing and DHCP, not on a secondary access point that only broadcasts Wi-Fi. If the mesh system has a central app instead of a web page, look for Internet, WAN or DNS settings in that app. The correct location is model-dependent; do not apply instructions for a different brand or firmware version.

A new router may be an option, not a requirement

If your current router genuinely cannot set custom DNS, a home Wi-Fi router with configurable DNS is one possible solution. Compatibility remains model- and firmware-dependent, and replacing the router is unnecessary when the existing equipment already exposes the needed fields. Confirm that the replacement supports your internet connection type and can operate as the primary router before purchasing it.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Roku has no internet after saving DNS

  • Re-enter the provider address carefully and remove accidental spaces.
  • Restore automatic DNS temporarily. If internet access returns, the supplied address may be wrong, expired, or incompatible with the router’s address family.
  • Restart the router and Roku again after correcting the value.
  • Contact the Smart DNS provider if its service status page does not recognize your public IP.

The provider says the network is unrecognized

Check the provider account for an IP-update or “refresh IP” control. If your internet connection uses a changing public IP, the service may need the new value. Smart DNS Proxy’s 2020 instructions describe this behavior, but confirm the requirement and current procedure with your chosen service before making any static routes or other advanced changes.

Only one application fails

Application support is not universal. Some applications use DNS behavior that bypasses the configured resolver, and a regional catalog may not be offered at the selected location. The older Smart DNS Proxy article mentions applications that force Google DNS and describes static IP routing as a provider-specific workaround. Treat that advice as historical and service-specific: do not add routes unless your current provider supplies exact, current instructions for your router model.

Wi-Fi is unreliable

Smart DNS does not change radio channels, Wi-Fi bands or signal strength. Roku’s advanced-networking article covers those ordinary wireless issues separately (Roku Support). Resolve weak signal, channel congestion or an unsupported band independently of the DNS change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The change affected every device in the house

That is an expected consequence of changing DNS at the router. Devices that use the router’s DNS settings may now resolve domains through the Smart DNS service. If you want the change limited to Roku, the router must support device-specific DNS or a separate network; the cited sources do not establish a universal method for doing that.

Smart DNS versus a VPN for Roku

Choose based on the result you need, not on the words “smart” or “secure.”

Characteristic Smart DNS VPN
Primary function Uses DNS responses and selected proxy routing for supported geofenced services Creates an encrypted connection through a VPN server
Encryption Not provided by Smart DNS, according to the cited provider guide Provided by the VPN protocol and client configuration
Roku setup in this scenario Configured in the router because Roku has no direct DNS-entry screen Depends on router support, a compatible app, or another network arrangement
Public IP visibility Does not hide the Roku’s public IP Typically presents the VPN server’s IP to destinations
Coverage Can affect all devices using the router’s DNS, with supported domains handled by the provider Usually routes traffic according to the VPN client or router policy

Smart DNS can be appropriate when your goal is provider-supported access to a particular Roku application and you do not need traffic encryption. Use a VPN-oriented solution when protecting traffic or hiding the public IP is a requirement. Neither approach guarantees that a particular streaming service will work in every country or on every Roku model.

How to evaluate a Smart DNS service

Do not choose solely on a list of advertised countries. Check the provider’s current documentation for the exact Roku model or Roku TV workflow you use. Useful comparison questions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the provider issue or generate an address specifically for Roku?
  • Can you select the location and application you need?
  • Does the account require public-IP registration, and how is a changed IP updated?
  • Does the provider document router setup for your router’s firmware?
  • What current privacy practices does the provider publish, given that Smart DNS is not encrypted by itself?
  • Does the provider clearly state which applications and locations are supported rather than promising universal access?

Support pages from Private Internet Access and Smart DNS Proxy illustrate why these details matter, but their instructions and supported services can change. Verify current terms and compatibility directly with whichever provider you select.

Privacy and network effects to understand

Because Smart DNS does not hide the Roku’s IP address or encrypt traffic, people sharing the network should not mistake the DNS change for a privacy control. Other devices may use the same resolver, and the provider may see DNS requests according to its published practices. Review those practices before enabling the service on a household router.

The proxy-based design can also create a mismatch between DNS resolution and application behavior. A service may resolve through the Smart DNS provider yet still reject the request based on account region, payment country, device checks or its own geolocation database. That is a service limitation, not necessarily a router error.

Restoring the original setup

  1. Return to the router’s Internet, WAN or DNS page.
  2. Change manual or custom DNS back to automatic, or restore the original DNS values you recorded.
  3. Save or apply the change and restart the router.
  4. Restart the Roku and reconnect it to the network if prompted.
  5. Disable or remove any provider-side public-IP registration only if the provider’s instructions say it is necessary.

Restoring automatic DNS is also a useful diagnostic step: if the Roku immediately works again, the issue is likely the Smart DNS address, account authorization or provider compatibility rather than the Roku’s Wi-Fi hardware.
