For most new WordPress blogs and business sites, the practical SEO-friendly choice is Post name. Open Settings → Permalinks, select Post name, and click Save Changes. WordPress then uses a readable post slug, such as /how-to-set-up-permalinks/. If the site already has published content, do not switch casually: map the old URLs, install permanent redirects, update links and references, and test the migration before and after saving the new structure.
What a permalink is and why it matters
A permalink is the permanent web address assigned to a WordPress post, page, category archive, or other public item. WordPress describes Pretty Permalinks as attractive and SEO-friendly because readable words give people and search engines context about the destination. Google Search Central likewise recommends a simple URL structure, logical organization, descriptive words instead of long ID numbers, and language that matches the audience.

A clear address can make a result easier to understand, easier to share, and easier to manage, while a careless change can break links that already work.
What makes a URL SEO-friendly
- Descriptive: the words identify the subject instead of exposing an opaque identifier.

Set up the permalink structure in WordPress
Use this procedure on a new installation or before publishing substantial content. The labels below are the standard WordPress dashboard choices.
- Sign in to the WordPress administration area.
- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Review the available structures: Plain, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric, Post name, and Custom structure.
- For a typical new evergreen blog or business site, select Post name. A post can then use a path such as
/how-to-set-up-permalinks/, based on its slug. - If you deliberately need dates or taxonomy in the address, choose the corresponding option or build a custom structure with only the tags that support that information architecture.

Open a representative post and page after saving. Confirm that the address contains the intended words, the page loads normally, and navigation still reaches the expected destination. The right choice depends on whether publication date or category hierarchy is part of the content’s identity. A structure that looks informative today can become misleading or unstable after an update, recategorization, or migration. Compare each option by URL length, meaning to readers, stability, and the amount of redirect work it would create later.

Why Post name is the usual default
Post name puts the post slug directly in the URL. It avoids committing every article to a publication date and avoids a category dependency that may change as the site grows. For an evergreen guide, a path such as /how-to-set-up-permalinks/ tells a reader what to expect and remains sensible after the article is revised.
Choose it before publishing a large archive whenever possible. WordPress treats permalinks as permanent addresses; changing them after publication creates work for the site owner and risk for visitors arriving through old links. When a date belongs in the URL

If a news site keeps an original report and later adds updates, a date-based path can preserve the historical context. If the site routinely turns old posts into current guides, a date in every URL is more likely to confuse visitors. Decide this policy before the archive grows rather than changing it after thousands of addresses have been indexed.
When to use categories or a custom structure
WordPress supports structure tags including %year%, %monthnum%, %day%, %postname%, and %category%. A category-plus-post-name pattern can communicate hierarchy when the taxonomy is stable and meaningful. It also ties every URL to that taxonomy: changing a category can change the address, and assigning one post to multiple categories creates an ongoing choice about which path should be canonical.
Use a custom structure only when the extra component answers a real reader need. A longer URL is not automatically more descriptive, and a hierarchy that mirrors internal filing rather than public navigation usually adds migration risk without adding useful context. Test the pattern with several category names and deep titles before adopting it, including a post that belongs to more than one category.
Write durable, readable post slugs
The permalink setting determines the pattern; each post’s slug supplies the words. Before publishing, edit the slug so it describes the page in plain language and remains accurate if the article is refreshed.
Use the subject, not a sentence
- Prefer a few specific words that identify the topic.
- Remove filler words when doing so does not make the meaning ambiguous.
- Use the language your audience uses, rather than internal project names or unexplained abbreviations.
- Keep the wording consistent with the page title and its actual contents.
- Use lowercase words separated by hyphens so the path is easy to read aloud and copy.
A slug should not be a place to list every keyword or repeat the entire headline. Clarity and durability matter more than squeezing in additional terms. If a headline is later rewritten for a seasonal campaign, keep a stable topical slug unless the page itself has materially changed.
Think before changing a published slug
Editing a published slug changes the address under a slug-based structure. Treat that as a URL migration, not as a cosmetic rewrite. If the old address has been shared, indexed, bookmarked, or linked from another site, preserve access with a permanent redirect and update links you control.

Keep a record of the previous slug and the date of the change. That small log helps an editor recognize why a redirect exists and prevents a later cleanup from deleting a rule that still serves an external link.
Changing permalinks on an established site
Changing the setting alone does not move visitors from an old address to a new one. Plan the change as a controlled migration. The larger the archive, the more important it is to work from a complete old-to-new map rather than relying on a single pattern-based rule.

- Inventory important URLs. Export or record published posts, pages, category archives, high-traffic entries, campaign links, and any other addresses that must continue to work. Include URLs in printed materials, email templates, documentation, social profiles, and paid campaigns that you control.
- Choose the destination pattern. Decide the new structure and identify the exact new URL for every important old URL. Do not rely on a broad rule if individual posts will receive different slugs.
- Create permanent redirects. Map each old address to its corresponding new address before switching the setting. A redirect should lead directly to the relevant replacement, not to an unrelated home page. Use one direct redirect wherever possible rather than chaining several old addresses together.
- Review dependencies. Find internal links, navigation menus, canonical references, XML sitemap entries, feeds, documentation, and external campaign links that contain the old paths.
- Test the plan. Check representative old URLs and confirm that each returns a permanent redirect and arrives at the intended new page. Test new URLs directly as well. Include a post, page, category archive, and any custom public content type your site relies on.
- Open Settings → Permalinks and save. Select the new structure and click Save Changes to refresh WordPress rewrite rules.
- Update controlled references. Replace old internal links and regenerate or refresh the XML sitemap and canonical references so they point to the new addresses.
- Monitor after launch. Recheck representative pages, redirects, navigation, and campaign destinations. Investigate any unexpected 404 responses immediately.
For a large or business-critical site, schedule the change when someone can monitor traffic and error reports. Keep the old-to-new map as an operational record; it is useful when a forgotten campaign URL or external link surfaces months later. Do not delete redirect rules simply because the first post-launch check is clean; external links and bookmarks may continue to use the former addresses.
Tools that can help with a migration
A redirect or migration plugin can make it easier to maintain an old-to-new map, but it is optional. Check that any plugin is compatible with the current WordPress version, supports the redirect type you need, and is maintained before installing it. A WordPress SEO plugin can support broader metadata and sitemap work, but it is not required to configure native permalink settings.
Managed WordPress hosting may be useful when the server does not provide working rewrite support or when a provider will assist with a migration. Confirm the host’s current features, support scope, and pricing directly; hosting plans and partner terms change over time.
Why pretty permalinks show 404 errors
A 404 after selecting a pretty structure usually means the web server is not routing the clean path to WordPress correctly, or WordPress’s rewrite rules were not refreshed. Use this recovery sequence
- Return to Settings → Permalinks.
- Confirm the intended structure and click Save Changes again. This refreshes WordPress rewrite rules even if no option changed.
- Test a normal post, a page, and an archive URL to determine whether the failure affects every content type or only one path.
- Verify that the hosting environment has the required Apache or Nginx rewrite configuration for clean URLs.
- Ask the hosting provider to check rewrite configuration and relevant file permissions if the issue continues. Repeatedly changing the permalink pattern will not repair a server that cannot process the rules.
- After the server-side correction, save the permalink settings once more and retest the affected URLs.
Do not conceal a routing problem by returning every missing URL to the home page. A redirect is appropriate only when a genuine replacement exists; otherwise, the correct response is to fix the route or return an accurate not-found result.
Validation checklist after setup or migration
- Open a newly published post and verify that the slug is readable and accurate.
- Open an older post, a page, and a taxonomy archive to check that each content type resolves.
- Follow menus, related-post links, breadcrumbs, and in-content links from a normal visitor’s perspective.
- Test at least one old URL when a migration has occurred and confirm that it redirects to the exact corresponding new URL.
- Review XML sitemap and canonical references for old paths.
- Check external campaign links that you control, including links in email, documentation, and social profiles.
- Record the final structure and the date of the change so future editors do not alter it casually.

Adding categories that are likely to change
If categories are reorganized regularly, placing them in every post URL makes future changes more disruptive. Use category-based paths only when the taxonomy is stable and meaningful to readers.
Forgetting the Save Changes action
Selecting an option without saving does not apply the structure or refresh rewrite rules. Always click Save Changes, including after troubleshooting.
Redirecting every old page to one destination
Visitors and search engines need a relevant one-to-one destination wherever possible. A blanket redirect to the home page hides broken mappings and weakens the migration experience.

Editing slugs without checking collisions
A new slug can duplicate an existing path or create confusion with a page or category archive. Check the resulting URL and test it publicly before sharing it. If a desired word is already in use, choose a clear, durable alternative rather than repeatedly changing the address.
