Use Settings > Family on the organizer’s or designated parent/guardian’s iPhone to manage a child’s Screen Time remotely. Select the child, choose Screen Time, tap Continue, and follow the prompts. If Family Sharing is not being used, Screen Time can be configured directly on the child’s iPhone under Settings > Screen Time. The labels and available defaults vary with iOS version, the child’s age, and the country or region.
What you need before setting up Screen Time
Screen Time can manage downtime, app use, contacts, content ratings and related restrictions. Apple describes it as a way to manage “settings for downtime, app use, contacts, content ratings, and more” in its Support guide Set up parental controls with Family Sharing on iPhone.
- A child’s own Apple Account: Apple advises against sharing one Apple Account between family members. The child’s account should belong to the Family Sharing group if you want to manage settings from your iPhone.
- The right Family Sharing role: Remote management requires the adult to be the family organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- Compatible software: Apple’s redesigned Screen Time experience is described for iOS 27 and related current operating systems. The experience depends on the software installed across the family’s devices.
- Access to the adult’s device security: The adult may need the device passcode, Touch ID or Face ID to reset a Family Sharing-managed Screen Time passcode.
If your family cannot update every device, Apple says you can continue using the previous Screen Time version or adjust controls directly on the child’s iPhone. Do not assume that every family sees the same labels or defaults.
Choose the setup route
There are two supported ways to configure the controls. The first is generally easier for a parent who wants to manage settings without taking the child’s phone each time.

| Setup route | What is required | Where controls are managed | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family Sharing | The child is in the Family Sharing group, and the adult is the organizer or a parent/guardian | The adult’s iPhone, through Settings > Family | Families that want remote management and a centralized view of the child’s settings |
| On the child’s iPhone | Access to the child’s device; Family Sharing remote management is not required for this route | The child’s iPhone, through Settings > Screen Time | Families that cannot update every device for the redesigned experience or prefer direct setup |
Both routes cover the same practical areas: schedules, app use, communication, content and a Screen Time passcode. The difference is who completes the setup and where later changes are made.
Set up Screen Time from the adult’s iPhone with Family Sharing
- Confirm the family group. Make sure the child’s Apple Account appears in your Family Sharing group. Confirm that your role is organizer or parent/guardian. If the child is using another family member’s account, create or use the child’s own Apple Account instead of sharing credentials.
- Open Family settings. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap Family, select the child, then tap Screen Time.
- Start the setup. Tap Continue and follow the on-screen instructions. The exact screens depend on the iOS version installed on the devices.
- Choose the child’s use schedule. The current iOS 27 flow asks you to establish periods when the child can use the device and periods when most apps and notifications are paused. It may also offer an optional school-hours schedule. Review each schedule rather than accepting a default automatically.
- Set app-use allowances. Select categories or apps that need limits. In the iOS 27 guide, Apple calls these category-based allowances Time Allowances; older versions and help pages call the same general feature App Limits.
- Review contacts and communication. Use the communication choices in the setup flow to decide who the child can contact and when communication is available.
- Review content controls. Check web-content access, app ratings, media ratings, app downloads, websites and purchase restrictions. Choose settings that match the child’s age and your family’s rules.
- Create a Screen Time passcode. Set a passcode that the child does not know. This prevents changes to schedules, limits and restrictions without your authorization.
- Finish and verify. After setup, open the child’s Screen Time settings again and check the resulting schedule, allowances, communication rules, content restrictions and allowed apps.
Apple’s current guidance says that the redesigned experience requires all devices in the Family Sharing group to use the corresponding current versions. The organizer or parent/guardian must also update the family controls. If any device cannot be updated, use the previous Screen Time experience or configure the controls directly on the child’s iPhone.
Set up Screen Time directly on the child’s iPhone
This route is useful when the family is not using remote Family Sharing management, or when the devices cannot all meet the software requirement for the redesigned experience.
The Tool Desk

- Tap Screen Time.
- Follow the setup prompts to configure schedules, app-use limits, communication and content restrictions.
- Create a Screen Time passcode that is different from any passcode the child uses to unlock the phone.
- Return to Settings > Screen Time whenever you need to change a control.
On-device setup has a different recovery path from Family Sharing setup. Apple says the Apple Account can be used to reset a forgotten Screen Time passcode when Screen Time was configured on the child’s device. Record which Apple Account is associated with recovery before handing the phone back to the child.
Configure schedules and app-use limits
Downtime or use schedules
Set the hours when the child should be away from the device. During those periods, most apps and notifications can be paused. The iOS 27 setup flow also describes an optional school-hours schedule, allowing school time to be treated separately from overnight or general downtime.
Before enabling a schedule, identify the apps that must remain available. A schedule that blocks a health, accessibility or communication app can create a practical problem even when the overall rule is appropriate.
Time Allowances or App Limits
Choose individual apps or categories and assign an allowance. If your device uses the older interface, look for App Limits; if it uses the redesigned iOS 27 terminology, look for Time Allowances. The name changed, but the purpose is to control how long selected apps or categories can be used.

Start with the categories that actually need a boundary instead of adding every app to a limit. Review whether a category contains essential tools before applying the restriction. A limit can affect more than entertainment: communication and other necessary functions may be included depending on the apps selected.
Control communication, web access and content
Communication limits
Review who the child can communicate with and whether those rules apply during scheduled downtime or after an app allowance expires. Communication settings are separate from simply deciding how long an app can be open, so check both areas.
Messages and emergency communication
Apple warns that if Messages is not always allowed, the child may be unable to send or receive messages during Downtime or after an app limit expires. That can include messages to emergency numbers and contacts. Before relying on a schedule, verify the Always Allowed list and the communication settings. Test the behavior at a time when changing the setting will not disrupt the child’s normal use.
Websites, apps and media
Family Sharing setup exposes controls for web content, app ratings and media content. Review the following individually:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Web content: Decide what level of website access is appropriate.
- App ratings: Restrict downloads or use according to the rating choices available on the device.
- Media ratings: Apply age-appropriate limits to media categories.
- Websites and purchases: Review website access, app downloads and purchase restrictions rather than assuming an app-use limit covers them.
Apple notes that controls and defaults can depend on the child’s age and country or region. Treat the choices shown on your device as the authoritative set for your family’s location and software version.
Review Communication Safety and allowed apps
Apple says Communication Safety and web-content limits turn on by default for children under 18 when Screen Time is set up, with the applicable age varying by country or region. Check the settings instead of assuming that the same default applies everywhere.
Open the Allowed Apps list and make sure health or accessibility apps remain available. Also check any app needed for school, transportation, family communication or emergency contact. A broad downtime schedule is only useful if essential apps remain usable.

Create, protect and recover the Screen Time passcode
Why the passcode matters
The Screen Time passcode protects the restrictions from being changed by the child. Use a code the child cannot guess and do not reuse the child’s device-unlock code.

When Screen Time was configured on the child’s iPhone, Apple says the Apple Account can reset a forgotten passcode. Ensure the account credentials are available to the authorized adult before setup is complete.
Recovery after Family Sharing setup
For Family Sharing setup, the adult can reset the passcode using the adult device passcode, Touch ID or Face ID. The recovery method therefore depends on the route used to create Screen Time; knowing one method does not guarantee that it applies to the other.
Handle iOS-version, age and region differences
Do not use a screenshot or instruction written for one iOS release as proof that your menus should match exactly. Apple’s current parental-controls material describes an iOS 27 redesign, while older devices may continue to show the previous Screen Time interface.
- All devices updated: If every device in the Family Sharing group uses the corresponding current operating systems, the organizer or parent/guardian can use the redesigned family setup.
- Some devices cannot update: Apple says the family can continue with the previous Screen Time version or manage controls directly on the child’s iPhone.
- Different labels: “Time Allowances” is the iOS 27 term described for category-based allowances; “App Limits” appears in older interfaces and documentation.
- Different defaults: A child’s age and country or region can change available controls and automatic settings.
If a control mentioned in a guide is missing, first check the iOS version on the relevant device, the child’s age information and the family’s region. Then look for the older equivalent label or configure the setting directly on the child’s phone.

Verify the setup before handing over the phone
- Confirm the child is selected under Settings > Family on the adult’s iPhone, or that Screen Time is active under Settings > Screen Time on the child’s iPhone.
- Check the start and end times for every downtime or school-hours schedule.
- Check each Time Allowance or App Limit and the categories it covers.
- Open Always Allowed and confirm Messages, emergency communication and required health or accessibility apps are available.
- Review communication contacts and timing rules.
- Review web-content, app-rating, media-rating, website, download and purchase restrictions.
- Test one limited app and one required app so you know the rules behave as intended.
- Confirm that the Screen Time passcode is set and that the appropriate recovery method is available.
When a control does not behave as expected
The child does not appear under Family
Check that the child’s own Apple Account is in the Family Sharing group and that your account has organizer or parent/guardian status. A shared account or an account outside the group will not provide the expected remote-management route.
The menu names do not match
Check whether the device is using the iOS 27 redesign or an earlier Screen Time interface. Look for Time Allowances in the redesigned flow and App Limits in older documentation. If the family cannot update all devices, use the previous version or configure the child’s phone directly.

Messages stop working during a schedule
Review Always Allowed, communication limits and the schedule that is active. Apple specifically warns that Messages can be blocked during Downtime or after an allowance expires, including communication with emergency numbers and contacts.
A restriction or default is different from another family’s
Apple says age and country or region affect controls and defaults. Compare the child’s account information and device software rather than assuming the other family’s settings are universal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A practical maintenance routine
Screen Time is not a one-time switch. Recheck the settings after an iOS update, when the child’s schedule changes, or when a required app is installed. Review the active schedules, allowances, communication rules, content restrictions and Always Allowed list together so that changing one control does not accidentally remove access to an essential function.
A safer setup sequence for families
Work through the controls in an order that reduces accidental lockouts. First confirm the child’s Apple Account and Family Sharing role. Next record the school, sleep and other periods that need schedules. Then identify essential apps and contacts before applying limits. After that, set entertainment and category allowances, followed by web, app, media, download and purchase restrictions. Create the passcode only after the rules are reviewed, and keep the applicable recovery method available.
Use the same sequence when making changes later. Changing a schedule can alter when Messages or other communication is available; changing an app category can include an app that the child needs for health, accessibility or school. Reviewing related controls together is more reliable than changing one setting in isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check after an update or device change
When an iPhone or another Family Sharing device moves to a different iOS release, compare the labels and available controls again. The iOS 27 experience may show Time Allowances where an older version showed App Limits. If one family device remains on an older release, the redesigned remote flow may not be available for the whole group; use the previous experience or make the change on the child’s iPhone.
Also recheck age- and region-dependent defaults. A setting that appeared automatically for one child or location should not be treated as a universal rule for another. Confirm the actual values shown on the device, especially Communication Safety, web-content limits and allowed apps.

Common setup pitfalls
- Using a shared Apple Account: This prevents a clean child-specific Family Sharing setup. Use the child’s own account.
- Assuming the adult can manage every account: Remote controls require organizer or parent/guardian status.
- Copying an old menu path: Version changes can rename or reorganize controls.
- Forgetting Messages: A schedule or expired allowance can block Messages, including emergency communication, unless it is allowed appropriately.
- Leaving recovery until later: The Apple Account is used for on-device passcode recovery, while Family Sharing recovery uses the adult’s device security.
- Applying broad limits without checking essentials: Health, accessibility, school and family-contact apps may need to remain in Allowed Apps.
Final pre-setup checklist
Before tapping Continue, have the child’s Apple Account ready, verify the Family Sharing role, and check whether every family device can run the current software. Decide the schedules, app categories, communication contacts, web and content levels, purchase rules and essential allowed apps. After setup, test a limited app, a required app and Messages during the relevant schedule. Finally, confirm the passcode and its route-specific recovery method. This short test catches most configuration problems before the child depends on the phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set up Screen Time without Family Sharing?
Yes. Apple supports setting it up directly on the child’s iPhone through Settings > Screen Time. Family Sharing is the route for managing the child’s settings from the adult’s iPhone.
Who can manage a child’s Screen Time through Family Sharing?
The adult must be the Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian, and the child’s own Apple Account must be in the family group.
Why do I see App Limits instead of Time Allowances?
Apple’s iOS 27 material uses Time Allowances for category-based allowances. Older iOS versions and help pages use App Limits. The software version determines the label you see.
Can Screen Time block Messages?
Yes. Apple warns that Messages may stop sending or receiving during Downtime or after an app allowance expires, including messages to emergency numbers and contacts, unless communication and Always Allowed settings permit it.
How do I recover a forgotten Screen Time passcode?
For on-device setup, Apple says the associated Apple Account can reset the passcode. For Family Sharing setup, the adult can reset it with the adult device passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.
Why are my controls different from another family’s?
Apple says available controls and defaults can vary with the child’s age and the country or region, as well as the iOS version installed.
What if every family device cannot update?
Apple says you can continue with the previous Screen Time version or adjust controls directly on the child’s iPhone instead of using the redesigned family experience.
Which apps should remain available during Downtime?
Review the Allowed Apps list and keep health, accessibility, school, transportation, family communication and emergency-contact apps available when the child needs them.
The Bottom Line
Use Family Sharing when the child has a separate Apple Account and you are the organizer or parent/guardian; otherwise configure Screen Time directly on the child’s iPhone. Set schedules, allowances, communication and content rules, protect them with a passcode, and test Messages and essential apps before relying on the restrictions.
