To schedule announcements on a 7 Days to Die server, create a scheduled task in your hosting control panel that runs a Console/RCON command. Enter say "Server restart in 10 minutes", save the task, and apply it. If your host does not offer command scheduling, a server manager such as CSMM can run commands at intervals and send timed messages.

This approach works for restart warnings, maintenance notices, event reminders, rule reminders, and other messages that need to reach every connected player without an administrator typing them manually. The important distinction is that the scheduler must send a command to the live game server. Editing a file on disk is not the same thing as broadcasting a chat message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you need before scheduling a message

Start by identifying how your server is operated. A managed server is rented from a game-server provider, so the provider normally supplies a web control panel. A self-hosted server runs on your own machine or virtual server, so you may need to install and maintain a separate management application. The location of the scheduler changes, but the requirement does not: the task must be able to execute a command in the running game server.

On a managed server, look for a menu named Scheduled Tasks, Scheduler, Automation, or something similar. The exact menu name and layout vary by provider. On a self-hosted server, a manager such as CSMM can provide a web interface and recurring command automation. If neither option can execute a console or RCON command, a task that merely edits a file will not produce an in-game announcement.

Do not confuse a server message with a server setting. The official wiki describes serverconfig.xml as the file used to adjust server settings. A scheduled announcement is different: it is a command sent to the active server process. A scheduled file edit may change a setting after a restart, but it does not itself place text in players’ chat.

Confirm the version and configuration model first

Before changing administration settings, identify the server version shown by your host or server console. Configuration references have changed across versions. The 7 Days To Die Wiki’s V3.3.0 reference, re-checked October 10, 2026, says a V3.3.0 server reads 69 properties from serverconfig.xml. The same reference says 30 older properties were removed in V3.0 and that many gameplay controls are now represented through SandboxCode or runtime preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This matters when troubleshooting. If you copy an older guide and edit a property that the current server no longer reads, nothing will change. That stale setting is not evidence that the say command is broken. Confirm the version, identify which configuration model it uses, and then check the live administration interface used by your scheduler.

For command access, the settings reference lists TelnetEnabled, TelnetPort, TelnetPassword, and TerminalWindowEnabled. These names help you locate relevant options in a self-hosted configuration. A provider may hide them, manage them for you, or expose a different panel-controlled connection, so do not assume every host uses identical fields.

Seven-step setup plan

  1. Confirm the environment. Decide whether the server is managed by a hosting company or operated by you. Find the provider’s scheduled-task page, or choose a server manager for a self-hosted installation. The capability you need is execution of a Console/RCON command.
  2. Confirm the version and configuration model. Check the server version before relying on an old configuration tutorial. In V3.3.0, the wiki reports 69 readable serverconfig.xml properties, while 30 properties from older versions were removed in V3.0.
  3. Check command access. Determine whether your setup uses a local terminal, Telnet, RCON, or a provider-managed connection. For a self-hosted configuration, inspect TelnetEnabled, TelnetPort, and TelnetPassword, along with TerminalWindowEnabled where applicable.
  4. Create the first task. In the scheduler, choose Console/RCON Command. In the command field enter exactly say "Server restart in 10 minutes". Keep the quotation marks around the message.
  5. Choose timing. Begin with a near-term test or short interval. Have someone connected when it runs. Once visibility is confirmed, choose the production cadence that fits your restart or maintenance routine.
  6. Save and apply. Hyper Layer’s hosting documentation, last updated June 17, 2026, specifically separates saving the settings from applying the scheduled task. Complete both actions when your panel presents them; a task left unapplied may never execute.
  7. Verify and then expand. Confirm that a connected player sees the test message. Only after that should you create additional warnings or recurring tasks. Keep a record of the task text and timing so later edits are easy to audit.

Enter the exact command

The documented command format is say "Your_Message_Here". Replace the placeholder with the text you want players to see:

  • say "Server restart in 30 minutes"
  • say "Server restart in 15 minutes"
  • say "Server restart in 10 minutes"
  • say "Server restart in 5 minutes"
  • say "Server restart in 1 minute"

Use normal spaces inside the quotation marks. Keeping the quotation marks is especially important for a sentence containing multiple words. If your panel has separate fields for a command and its arguments, follow that panel’s format while preserving the same logical command: send say followed by the complete quoted message.

Do not add a shell wrapper, edit a configuration path in the command field, or paste a complete script unless the host specifically documents that format. The scheduler should execute the game command itself. Hyper Layer explains that selecting Console/RCON Command causes the scheduled task to execute the specified command in the game console at the scheduled time.

Build a useful restart-warning schedule

A single warning can be enough for a short maintenance window, while a longer restart benefits from several reminders. A practical example is 30, 15, 10, 5, and 1 minute before the planned restart. The game and the hosting instructions do not impose that cadence; it is an operational example you can adjust to your community.

If your panel schedules individual executions, create a separate task for each message. Give each task a descriptive name such as “Restart warning — 30 minutes” so you can find the correct entry later. If the panel supports recurrence, check whether it repeats indefinitely, repeats until a date, or runs only once. A recurring task that was intended for one maintenance window can continue sending confusing messages after the event.

Keep the message itself specific. “Restart in 10 minutes” tells players what is happening and when. For maintenance, you can identify the reason without making unsupported promises: “Maintenance restart in 10 minutes.” If the restart time changes, update or disable every related warning rather than leaving old tasks active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement does not perform the restart. The documented workflow runs the message command in the game console. Schedule the actual restart separately through the facilities your host provides, and verify that the warning times line up with that action.

Save, apply, and test before relying on it

Saving a task stores its definition; applying or enabling it makes the scheduler use that definition. Some panels expose both controls, while others use one button. Follow the provider’s sequence and look for an enabled, active, or next-run indicator after applying the task.

Test with a message that cannot be mistaken for a real maintenance notice, such as say "Scheduler test — no restart planned". Set it for a near-term time and keep at least one player connected. A successful test confirms more than the command syntax: it shows that the task is enabled, the scheduler’s clock is functioning, the command path can reach the server, and the resulting chat line is visible to players.

After the message appears, disable or delete the test task. Then create the production warning tasks and test again after any change to the schedule, server version, administration password, or hosting plan. A schedule that worked before a configuration change should not be assumed to remain valid.

Choose between a hosting-panel task, CSMM, and manual entry

Option Best suited to What it offers Trade-off
Hosting-panel scheduled task Managed-server customers A provider-hosted scheduler can run a Console/RCON Command; Hyper Layer documents the exact workflow. It depends on the provider exposing that task type and on the plan allowing it.
CSMM or a similar server manager Self-hosters and administrators who need broader automation CSMM’s project README lists arbitrary command intervals and timed server messages. You must install, secure, update, and maintain the additional management service.
Manual console entry One-off announcements Lets an administrator send a message without setting up a scheduler or another service. It is not recurring, depends on someone being present, and is easy to forget.

The hosting-panel route is usually the shortest setup when the required task type is available. It avoids running another application, but you remain dependent on the provider’s panel, permissions, and scheduling features. CSMM is more suitable when you control the server and want interval-based commands or timed messages beyond a single announcement. Manual entry has no automation overhead, but it cannot reliably deliver a warning when nobody is watching the console.

Access control is another difference. A panel may keep Telnet or RCON credentials behind the provider interface. A self-hosted manager must be able to authenticate to the server, and you are responsible for protecting those credentials and limiting administrative access. Maintenance burden follows the same pattern: provider-managed updates are simpler for the customer, while self-managed software offers more control but adds upkeep.

Use CSMM when your host cannot schedule commands

CSMM is a web-based 7 Days to Die server manager. Its project README, viewed October 14, 2026, describes “Server automation – Run any command in any time interval you want” and lists timed server messages among its examples. That directly addresses the case where a hosting panel has no Console/RCON scheduler.

Plan the manager as a separate service. Install it according to the instructions for your operating system and deployment, configure communication with the game server, and verify that a basic command reaches the correct instance before creating a long warning sequence. The available project description establishes interval automation and timed messages, but it does not define one installation procedure for every operating system, server version, or hosting arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once communication works, create a test timed message, observe it in game, and then configure production intervals. Keep CSMM’s own access controls protected, document which server it manages, and remember that a manager outage can stop announcements even while the game server remains online. If your host later adds a native scheduler, compare the two paths before migrating tasks so that both do not send duplicate warnings.

Check administration access and connection details

A task can be perfectly written and still fail if the command channel cannot connect. For a self-hosted server, inspect the live configuration and confirm that the interface your scheduler uses is enabled. The settings reference identifies TelnetEnabled, TelnetPort, and TelnetPassword, while TerminalWindowEnabled indicates whether a local terminal window is available.

Use the exact port and password expected by the scheduler. A connection failure can result from a disabled interface, a wrong port, a changed password, a firewall rule, or a manager pointed at the wrong server. Do not expose administrative ports broadly just to make a task work; use the access controls and network guidance supplied by your host or server-management software.

On a managed server, the provider may control these settings or provide a panel-mediated connection instead of showing raw Telnet values. In that case, use the panel’s documented command task and ask support which interface it uses. Guessing at hidden connection values can create a security problem and will not fix a task configured for the wrong command type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a scheduled message that does not appear

The task never runs

  • Confirm that the task is enabled and was applied after saving.
  • Check the next-run time, recurrence, and the panel’s time-zone setting if one is shown.
  • Verify that the server was online and that the task targets the intended server instance.
  • Run a near-term test rather than waiting for a distant restart window.

The task runs, but players see no message

  • Check that the task type is Console/RCON Command, not a generic file or operating-system task.
  • Check that the command begins with say.
  • Check that the complete message is enclosed in quotation marks, as in say "Server restart in 10 minutes".
  • Confirm that the task was saved and applied, then verify its scheduled time.
  • Test while a player is connected and ask that player to confirm the chat line.

The remote command connection fails

Identify which administration interface the setup actually uses. If it relies on Telnet settings, inspect whether Telnet is enabled and verify the configured port and password against the scheduler’s connection details. For a hosted server, the provider may control those values or use a separate panel-managed channel. Follow the panel’s instructions rather than copying settings from an unrelated server.

Changing a configuration property has no effect

Confirm the server version and whether the property is still read from serverconfig.xml. The V3.3.0 configuration reference reports that 30 older properties were removed in V3.0 and that many gameplay controls moved to SandboxCode or runtime preferences. A stale setting cannot repair a scheduler using the wrong command type, and editing unrelated gameplay properties will not send a chat message.

The hosting panel has no command scheduler

Ask the host whether its control panel supports scheduled Console/RCON Commands. If it does not, use a server manager with documented interval automation, such as CSMM, or send messages manually when automation is unnecessary. Avoid assuming that a cron job or file editor will broadcast in game unless the host explicitly documents that integration.

Players report duplicate or outdated announcements

Review every active task and manager rule. Duplicate tasks can result when an old provider task remains enabled after moving to CSMM, or when a recurring test was never disabled. Remove obsolete entries, update messages after a schedule change, and run one controlled test before the next maintenance window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational practices that keep announcements dependable

  • Use a test message first. Confirm command delivery and player visibility before using real restart wording.
  • Name tasks clearly. Include the event and lead time in each task name so the schedule is understandable at a glance.
  • Keep warnings separate from the restart. A say task announces an event; it does not restart the server.
  • Match times to the actual event. If maintenance is delayed, disable or edit pending warnings instead of letting inaccurate messages run.
  • Retest after changes. Recheck after changing credentials, ports, server versions, providers, or management software.
  • Limit administrative access. Protect Telnet/RCON credentials and the web manager because they can issue more than chat messages.
  • Document the fallback. Know how to send one manual console message if the scheduler or manager is temporarily unavailable.

These practices reduce the most common operational mistakes: a task that was saved but not applied, a message sent through the wrong task type, a recurrence left enabled after a one-time event, or a warning that runs while the restart itself is scheduled for a different time.

How do I schedule server messages in 7 Days to Die?

Open your hosting panel’s scheduler, select Console/RCON Command, enter the say command, set the time or interval, save the task, and apply it. Test with a connected player before relying on it.

Can I automate server announcements without logging in every time?

Yes. A hosting-panel scheduler can run the command automatically. If the panel lacks that feature, CSMM documents interval-based command automation and timed server messages for self-hosted or otherwise compatible setups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make my server announce a restart?

Create one or more scheduled tasks using messages such as say "Server restart in 30 minutes", say "Server restart in 10 minutes", and say "Server restart in 1 minute". Schedule the actual restart separately; the announcement command does not restart the server.

Why does my scheduled say command do nothing?

Check that the task type is Console/RCON Command, the command starts with say, quotation marks surround the full message, and the task was saved and applied. Then verify the schedule, connection credentials, and that a player was connected during the test.

Do I need to edit serverconfig.xml to send a scheduled message?

No. The file contains server properties; a scheduled announcement must execute a command against the running server. Editing a configuration file alone will not broadcast chat.

What should I check if Telnet or RCON cannot connect?

Confirm which interface your setup uses, then check the corresponding enablement setting, port, password, and target server. The configuration reference lists TelnetEnabled, TelnetPort, and TelnetPassword. Hosted panels may manage these values internally.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a universal restart-warning schedule?

No. A cadence such as 30, 15, 10, 5, and 1 minute is a practical example, not a game requirement. Choose times that match your maintenance process and verify that each warning aligns with the actual restart.

What changed in newer server configuration versions?

The V3.3.0 reference says the server reads 69 serverconfig.xml properties, while 30 older properties were removed in V3.0. Many gameplay controls moved to SandboxCode or runtime preferences, so old property edits may have no effect.

Should I use a hosting scheduler or CSMM?

Use the hosting scheduler when it exposes Console/RCON Command tasks and you want the simplest managed setup. Choose CSMM when you self-host or need interval automation and timed messages beyond what the provider offers, accepting the extra installation and maintenance work.

The Bottom Line

Schedule a say command, not a configuration-file edit: select Console/RCON Command, enter say "Server restart in 10 minutes", save and apply the task, then test it with a connected player. Use separate warning tasks for your chosen cadence, keep the restart action separate, and switch to CSMM or another server manager if your host cannot schedule console commands.
