The safest way to test an AI coding or tool-using agent is to combine two independent controls: a sandbox that technically limits files, processes and network access, and an approval policy that decides which actions run automatically, pause for review or are denied. Start with a disposable workspace, deny network access and credentials by default, enable only the tools the test needs, then verify the boundary with deliberate allow-and-deny checks.
This guide gives a repeatable setup for local command-line agents and hosted environments. Product defaults and host lists can change, so check the selected platform’s current documentation before deploying a test; the implementation examples below reflect documentation available on October 13, 2026.
What sandboxing and permissions control
Sandboxing is the execution boundary. It determines which paths an agent can read or write, whether child processes inherit restrictions, which network destinations are reachable and which parts of the host remain protected. Permission or approval policy is the review boundary. It determines whether an otherwise possible action is automatically allowed, blocked, or held for a person or policy engine.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →These controls are complementary, not interchangeable. OpenAI describes the relationship this way: “Approvals and sandboxing work together. The sandbox defines the technical execution boundary, including where Codex can write, whether it can reach the network, and which paths remain protected. Approval policy determines when Codex must ask to perform an action, such as when it needs to do something outside of the sandbox.” See OpenAI’s operational guidance.

A sandbox does not make a risky operation safe merely because it is inside the boundary. A test that permits an agent to upload files to an allowed host, or to invoke a privileged local socket, may still expose data. Conversely, an approval prompt cannot repair an overly broad filesystem or network boundary if a reviewer routinely approves requests without understanding their scope.
Define the test boundary before configuring a product
Write down the workflow you intend to test and the assets it genuinely requires. Treat this as a contract that can be reviewed and reproduced.
List the task and its data
- State the agent goal in one sentence, such as running unit tests against a fixture repository or updating a generated documentation file.
- Use a disposable branch, worktree, container or cloud environment. Include only the source files, test data and configuration needed for that scenario.
- Replace customer records, private source and real credentials with synthetic fixtures wherever possible.
- Record expected outputs and acceptable side effects so a reviewer can distinguish a successful test from an accidental change.
Map paths explicitly
Separate paths into at least four classes: readable and writable, readable only, completely denied, and protected by a human approval step. Keep home-directory configuration, SSH material, cloud credentials, production repositories and personal documents outside the agent’s reachable roots. Filesystem isolation and network isolation are separate dimensions: leaving one active does not compensate for weakening the other.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Map network destinations
Begin with no outbound network. If the task needs a package registry, code host, documentation site or MCP endpoint, name the exact host and purpose. A host allowlist is not an operation allowlist: access to an allowed host can often be used for uploads as well as downloads. Anthropic’s managed-environment documentation therefore treats network access as a potential data-egress path. Review every tool that can send data over an approved connection.

Identify tools and integrations
Inventory shell access, package managers, version-control commands, browser or computer-use features, MCP servers, deployment hooks, background workers and delegated agents. A policy that covers a shell does not automatically cover a desktop-control tool or an integration running outside that shell.
Choose a least-privilege policy
Translate the boundary into explicit defaults. The following matrix is a practical starting point; adapt it to the threat model rather than copying values blindly.
| Control | Safer initial setting | Enable only when | Review concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workspace writes | Test worktree or temporary directory only | The task must create or modify fixtures | Prevent writes to the host home directory, production checkout and shared mounts |
| Workspace reads | Required repository and synthetic fixtures | A specific dependency is needed | Read access can disclose secrets even without write access |
| Network | Disabled | A named host is required for the test | Allowed hosts may receive uploads; inspect credentials and commands using them |
| Credentials | Absent or masked | A short-lived, narrowly scoped test token is essential | Never reuse production tokens; protect both environment variables and credential files |
| Shell and child processes | Approval for external writes, destructive commands and deployment | The workflow requires that operation | Confirm child processes inherit the same restrictions |
| MCP and integrations | Disabled or always ask | The test explicitly exercises the integration | Inspect each tool’s arguments, destination and data flow |
| Computer use | Disabled | The scenario requires a real desktop or browser | Desktop access may be outside the shell sandbox and use separate application prompts |
Set up the environment step by step
- Create an isolated workspace. Make a temporary worktree, container or managed environment from a disposable branch. Mount only the repository and fixture directories needed for the run. Do not mount the host’s home directory, SSH directory, credential stores, production volumes or container-control sockets.
- Set read and write roots. Configure the agent’s writable root to the test workspace. If the platform supports separate read-only paths, add only required dependency directories. Attempting to write outside the root should be a denied test case, not an assumed property.
- Disable outbound network first. Run the test with networking disabled. When a failure demonstrates a genuine requirement, add the smallest exact host set and document why each host is present. Treat package-manager and MCP access as explicit permissions rather than incidental conveniences.
- Remove ambient credentials. Start with a clean environment, remove or mask cloud, source-control and service-token variables, and deny reads of credential files. If a test needs authentication, issue a short-lived token restricted to a disposable project and the minimum operation. Recheck this design when filesystem isolation is disabled because some credential protections depend on that layer.
- Select the minimum tool set. Enable only the shell commands, repository operations, package manager, MCP tools or browser controls used by the scenario. Disable unused integrations. Put destructive commands, deployment, publication, external writes and privilege changes behind an approval rule.
- Define approval behavior. Decide which operations are always allowed, always denied or subject to review. A useful default is automatic execution for read-only work inside the test root, review for network changes and writes outside the root, and denial for production endpoints, credential export and privilege escalation.
- Configure logging. Capture the task request, tool name and arguments, approval decision, execution result, filesystem or network denials and relevant child-process events. For team environments, retain the records with the test identifier and environment version. OpenAI documents agent-event export through OpenTelemetry and enterprise compliance logs; use equivalent facilities where available.
- Pin and record the environment. Save the agent version, sandbox configuration, container or image digest, enabled hosts, tool policy and fixture revision. This makes a later run comparable when product defaults change.
Verify the boundary with safe checks
Do not infer isolation from a configuration screen. Run benign probes that exercise every control you depend on, and record both the expected and observed result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFilesystem checks
- Read a fixture inside the allowed root and confirm success.
- Create, modify and delete a disposable file inside the writable root.
- Attempt to read a deliberately planted marker outside the root and confirm a denial without revealing its contents.
- Attempt to write outside the root and verify that the operation is blocked or requires the intended approval.
- Repeat the read and write attempts from a child process, background task and delegated agent if those features are part of the workflow.
Network checks
- Resolve or connect to an explicitly allowed host and confirm the expected result.
- Attempt a connection to an unapproved host and verify a deterministic denial.
- Inspect a permitted request path for upload capability. A successful connection alone does not prove that data egress is controlled.
- Repeat checks through package managers, MCP servers, browser tools and helper processes because they may use different network layers.
Approval checks
- Run an operation configured as automatic and confirm it does not prompt.
- Invoke a review-required operation and confirm the prompt identifies the tool, destination and requested effect.
- Reject the request and verify that no partial external write occurred.
- Try a denied operation and confirm it is blocked without a bypass prompt.
Keep these probes as regression tests. A product update, changed container runtime or newly enabled integration can alter the effective boundary even when the visible policy file is unchanged.

Account for processes and features outside the shell
Many failures come from testing only the obvious command path. Check the complete execution graph used by the agent:
- Shell children: compilers, test runners, scripts and package-manager subprocesses should inherit filesystem and network restrictions.
- Background work: watch processes, daemons and queued jobs may continue after the foreground command ends. Confirm their lifetime, roots and network policy.
- MCP tools: each server can have its own credentials, host access and side effects. Keep unfamiliar tools at review-required or disabled until their behavior is understood.
- Delegated agents: pass the same narrowed workspace and policy rather than an unrestricted parent environment.
- Browser or computer use: desktop control can operate on the actual graphical environment and may use per-application prompts separate from a Bash sandbox.
- Privileged sockets and mounts: Docker sockets, host IPC, broad bind mounts and setuid helpers can undermine an otherwise strict sandbox.
Claude Code’s documentation, for example, describes a Bash sandbox that covers shell commands and their child processes while warning that computer use occurs on the real desktop with separate application prompts. The implementation details are product-specific; test the exact features in your workflow rather than generalizing from one CLI.
Product-specific implementation patterns
OpenAI Codex-style environments
Use the product’s sandbox settings to define writable roots, protected paths and network reachability, then use approval policy for actions that cross those boundaries or have consequential effects. OpenAI’s enterprise guidance also discusses credential storage in the operating-system keyring, managed requirements and telemetry. Treat its examples as configurable policy patterns: the correct roots, domains and approvals depend on your repository and organization. Read Running Codex safely at OpenAI before translating the pattern into your deployment.
Managed-agent permission policies
Anthropic documents three policy outcomes for managed agents: always_allow, always_ask and auto. Its documentation says the agent toolset defaults to always_allow, while MCP toolsets default to always_ask; individual tools can also be disabled. Under auto, the server may run, deny or pause for approval. Keep always_ask on tools that end users must not authorize without review, especially when untrusted end-user text is passed as user intent because that text can influence policy evaluation. See the permission-policy documentation.

Managed cloud environments
Anthropic’s cloud environment setup describes a limited networking mode based on an allowed-host list, with optional package-manager and MCP permissions. The package-manager host list is vendor-maintained and can change. The documentation also states that omitting networking in an API create request results in unrestricted networking. Make the setting explicit in every request and recheck the current documentation immediately before use; defaults can change. Read the cloud environment setup guide.
Local sandboxed Bash
Claude Code’s sandbox separates filesystem isolation from network isolation and documents protections for credential files and environment variables. Broad writable paths, broad network domains and privileged Unix sockets can defeat the intended boundary. Read the sandboxed Bash documentation, then test the commands and integrations your own workflow invokes.

|---|---|---|
| Filesystem isolation | Uses the developer machine’s runtime and mounts; strong only when roots and privileged interfaces are constrained | Provides a separate execution environment, but inspect its mounts, persistence and teardown behavior |
| Network control | Depends on the local sandbox and host networking; egress visibility may require additional monitoring | Often offers explicit allowed-host modes and service-side controls; verify defaults and vendor-maintained host lists |
| Credential protection | Must remove local environment variables, files and keychain access deliberately | Can centralize secret injection, but supplied credentials remain usable over permitted network paths |
| Tool and process coverage | Easy to test local shells and repositories; desktop and privileged integrations may escape the tested path | Tool availability is standardized, but platform-specific agents and MCP servers still require separate checks |
| Reproducibility | Varies with each workstation, runtime and installed helper | Images, policies and identifiers can make repeated runs more consistent |
| Approval and audit | May rely on local prompts and logs; export and retention need deliberate setup | Often centralizes policy decisions and event logs; confirm retention, export and access controls |
| Operational effort | Fast for a developer experiment, with greater responsibility for host hygiene | More setup and service administration, with less coupling to an individual machine |
Credential handling deserves its own design
Credentials are not protected merely because the agent cannot write to a production directory. An environment variable can be read by a permitted command, and a token supplied to a command can authorize uploads to an allowed host.

- Start with no credentials in the environment.
- Mask common token variables and deny access to credential files, SSH keys and cloud configuration directories.
- Use a separate test identity with the smallest scope, shortest lifetime and narrowest resource access.
- Prefer a broker or operating-system keyring when the platform supports it, and record which tool can retrieve the secret.
- Revoke the identity after the run and inspect logs for accidental disclosure.
- Repeat the review if filesystem isolation is turned off or if a new integration receives the environment.
Common failure modes and fixes
The agent cannot install a dependency
Do not broadly enable the internet. Identify the package registry and any secondary host required for metadata or artifact downloads, add only those hosts, and keep upload-capable tools under review. If reproducibility matters, prebuild dependencies in the disposable image instead.
A forbidden file is visible
Remove the parent mount rather than relying only on a deny rule, check symlinks and bind mounts, and inspect whether a helper process runs outside the sandbox. Rotate any credential that may have been exposed and preserve the event log.
An approval prompt appears too often
Reduce prompts only for deterministic, read-only operations inside the test root. Keep prompts for network changes, external writes, privilege changes, publication and destructive commands. A blanket auto-allow rule trades convenience for an unreviewed side effect.
Recommended Free Tools
A network denial is bypassed
Check every network-capable path: child processes, package managers, browser tools, MCP servers, proxies, DNS helpers and background jobs. Confirm that the host allowlist is enforced at the layer actually used by the process and that no privileged socket provides an alternate route.
Logs do not explain an action
Include the original task, tool arguments, policy decision, process identity, destination, result and timestamp. Correlate delegated and background work with a single run identifier, and retain denials as well as successful calls.
Document a repeatable test record
For each run, preserve a short record containing:
- Agent and sandbox versions, runtime or image identifier and fixture revision.
- Allowed read roots, writable roots, protected paths and mounts.
- Network mode, exact hosts, package-manager and MCP settings.
- Credential names and scopes without storing secret values.
- Enabled tools, approval outcomes and disabled integrations.
- Boundary-check results for files, network, child processes, background work and desktop features.
- Agent logs, approval decisions, denials, execution results and any remediation.
This record lets a team compare runs and detect policy drift when a platform changes its defaults. Re-run the checks after changing the agent version, adding a tool, expanding a mount, enabling network access or switching from local to hosted execution.
