The safest YouTube setup for a child is a separate YouTube Kids profile configured by a parent: choose the youngest suitable age level, use Approved Content Only when you want a parent-curated catalog, disable search for a closed experience, set a timer, and review activity on every device. If your child uses regular YouTube, add a supervised experience through Google Family Link as well.
These controls reduce exposure and make supervision practical, but they do not guarantee that every recommendation is appropriate. Keep the parent account or PIN private, check the active profile before handing over a device, and revisit settings as your child and the service change.
What YouTube Kids parental controls can—and cannot—do
YouTube Kids is a separate child-focused app and web experience with profiles, age-based content settings and parent controls. Google describes it as an experience that delivers popular children’s videos in a way that is “safe and easy to use for children.” The separate profile matters: controls applied to one child profile do not automatically describe what appears in another profile, in regular YouTube, or on a device where a different account is signed in.

Recommendations can change, a child can switch profiles if the device allows it, and the same child may use the service on a television, phone, tablet or browser. - Configure the narrowest practical catalog. Select an age level, use Approved Content Only when appropriate, turn off search for a closed experience, and block items that should not appear.
- Keep supervising. Review history and recommendations, check the account on each device, and use Family Link when you need controls outside YouTube.
Google’s official safer-experience guidance says, “YouTube Kids has a full suite of parental controls in the app so you can customize your kid’s experience.” Menu names, eligibility and available controls can vary by country, device, account and product updates, so treat the labels below as the functions to locate rather than guaranteed wording on every screen.
Prepare the parent account, child profile and devices
Use a parent-controlled Google account
Start while signed in to the parent account, not an account the child can freely use. You need that account to create or select the child’s YouTube Kids profile and to change settings later. Protect the account password and any parent PIN; do not save them where the child can see or enter them.
List every place the child watches
Write down the devices and access methods before changing settings: YouTube Kids on a phone or tablet, the YouTube Kids web experience, a smart-TV app, regular YouTube in a browser, and any device managed with Family Link. A control is useful only where the child actually watches. Sign-in status can differ between a television and a mobile device even when both belong to the same household.
Decide how restrictive the experience needs to be
For a child who should see only items you select, plan to use Approved Content Only. For a child who needs a broader catalog, choose the youngest suitable age band, turn off search if discovery is not necessary, and plan regular review. The age setting is a starting point for curation, not a substitute for knowing what your child watches.
Set up a YouTube Kids profile step by step
1. Create or select the child’s profile
- Open the YouTube Kids app or web experience from the parent account.
- Choose the option to create a child profile or select the existing profile you want to edit.
- Confirm that the profile name or avatar belongs to the child who will use the device.
- Enter the parent verification requested by the app, and keep the resulting parent controls inaccessible to the child.
After saving, leave the profile settings and reopen them once to verify that you edited the intended child. If the profile list shows more than one child, do not assume a change made for one applies to the others.
2. Choose the content level
YouTube Kids presents three age-based choices in its current product guidance. Select the youngest level that fits the child’s developmental needs, then inspect the resulting recommendations yourself.

The labels are age bands, not guarantees about a particular video, creator or topic. A child’s reading ability, maturity, sensitivities and viewing context can make the youngest setting the better choice even when the child is older. After selecting a level, watch several items from the home screen and check whether thumbnails, language and themes fit your family rules.
3. Turn on Approved Content Only for the tightest catalog
Approved Content Only is the strongest parent-curation option documented in YouTube Kids guidance. It changes the task from filtering a broad catalog to building a list of videos and channels that your child may open.
- Open the selected child profile’s parent settings.
- Find the content or discovery setting and choose Approved Content Only, or the equivalent label shown in your region.
- Use the approval interface to select individual videos, channels or collections you have reviewed.
- Save the list, return to the child profile, and open a few approved items to confirm the catalog is the one you intended.
Use this mode when a child is very young, when a device is shared, or when you want a known library for travel or quiet time. It takes more work because every new item requires your review. If a channel changes its catalog, approval of the channel should not be treated as approval of every future upload; inspect the list periodically and remove anything that no longer fits.
4. Block individual videos and channels
YouTube documents controls for blocking both individual videos and channels. Use blocking when a recommendation, topic or creator is unsuitable for your child’s profile.
- While signed in to the parent-controlled profile, open the video or channel menu.
- Choose the block option and complete the parent verification if prompted.
- Return to the child profile and check that the item is no longer offered in the places where it appeared.
Blocking is different from Approved Content Only. Blocking removes selected items from a broader experience; it does not create a complete whitelist. If you need the child to see only reviewed material, use Approved Content Only instead of trying to block unwanted items one by one.

When a child reports an upsetting video, note the title or channel before blocking it so you can discuss what happened. Blocking should be paired with a conversation about leaving a video, telling a trusted adult and not sharing personal information.

5. Review search and discovery settings
Search expands what a child can look for, while recommendations and browsing can introduce material you did not select. If your goal is a parent-curated experience, review the profile’s search setting and turn search off when that option is available.
- Open the parent settings for the correct child profile.
- Locate the search or discovery control.
- Disable search if you want the child to browse only the available home-screen catalog, or leave it on only when the child’s age and your supervision plan justify it.
- Test the child view by attempting a search and by opening several recommended items.
Search and discovery labels can differ by account and region. If you cannot find the setting, confirm that you are in YouTube Kids rather than regular YouTube, update the app if appropriate, and check the profile-specific settings again. Turning off search does not remove the need to review recommendations.
6. Set a YouTube Kids timer
YouTube Kids includes a timer for limiting a viewing session. Set it from the parent controls, choose the duration that matches your family routine, and test the end-of-session behavior before relying on it.

- Choose a session length and start the timer.
- Let the timer finish once while you are present so you know how the app signals that time is over on that device.
- Change or cancel the timer only from the parent-controlled interface.
A YouTube Kids timer governs viewing in that experience; it is not the same as a device-wide limit. A child could move to another app, another browser account or regular YouTube unless those paths are also supervised. For app limits, device screen-time schedules or downtime across Google services, use Family Link.
7. Extend supervision with Google Family Link
Family Link is the appropriate layer when your child uses regular YouTube or when you need controls beyond the YouTube Kids app. Google documents Family Link as a place to manage YouTube and YouTube Kids controls and to supervise broader device use.
- Use it to manage a supervised YouTube experience when regular YouTube is necessary.
- Use device-level screen-time supervision when the child’s total device use matters, not just time in YouTube Kids.
- Use app limits or downtime when you need the device to restrict access across applications and services.
Family Link does not turn regular YouTube into YouTube Kids. The catalog, discovery behavior and available controls remain different, so decide deliberately which service the child should use. After changing a Family Link setting, test the child’s account on the device rather than assuming the policy propagated immediately.

8. Review history, recommendations and autoplay
History is both a supervision signal and an input to recommendations. YouTube Kids guidance allows parents to view recent videos and to pause or clear watch and search history. It also documents disabling autoplay.

- Open the parent settings for the child profile.
- Review recent watch and search activity for unfamiliar topics, repeated viewing or videos that do not match your family rules.
- Pause or clear history only when you have a specific reason, such as removing accidental searches; understand that pausing history can reduce what appears in activity review and can change recommendations.
- Turn off autoplay if you want each next video to require a deliberate choice rather than starting automatically.
Do not use a cleared history as evidence that nothing was watched. If activity visibility matters, leave history active and check it at a regular interval agreed with the other adults supervising the child.
YouTube Kids or supervised regular YouTube?
Both can be part of a family plan, but they solve different problems. YouTube Kids is designed as a separate child-focused experience with profiles and age bands. A supervised regular YouTube account offers access to the broader YouTube service under controls managed through Google’s supervision tools.

Choose YouTube Kids when a child needs a simpler, narrower environment or when you want Approved Content Only. Consider supervised regular YouTube only when the child needs its broader catalog and you are prepared to manage the account through Family Link and review activity.

A tightly curated setup for a young child
- Create a dedicated child profile in YouTube Kids.
- Select Preschool unless a different level is clearly more appropriate.
- Enable Approved Content Only and approve a short list of reviewed videos and channels.
- Turn search off, disable autoplay, and set a short timer.
- Keep the parent account and PIN private and review the catalog before adding new material.
This arrangement minimizes discovery, but it requires you to maintain the approved list. It is not “set and forget.”

- Choose the youngest YouTube Kids age level that fits the child rather than defaulting to Older.
- Decide whether search is necessary; if not, turn it off.
- Leave history available for review, disable autoplay if independent browsing is a concern, and establish a regular check-in.
- Use Family Link for device limits if the child can access other apps or regular YouTube.
- Explain what to do when a video feels wrong: stop watching, do not comment or share personal information, and tell a trusted adult.
A mixed-device household
- Use the same parent account and intended child profile on each YouTube Kids device.
- On televisions and browsers, verify the active profile after every sign-in or app update.
- Check whether regular YouTube is available outside the Kids app and apply the appropriate supervised experience through Family Link.
- Repeat a short test—profile, search, blocked item, timer and history—on every device rather than testing only one.
Troubleshoot the most common control failures
The child still sees videos you did not approve
First check whether the child is in Approved Content Only. If not, blocking individual items will not create a whitelist. Then verify the active profile and account, especially on a TV or shared browser. A different profile, regular YouTube app or signed-out session can have different recommendations.

Search is still available
Confirm that you changed the setting for the child profile, not a general app preference. Check whether the child is using regular YouTube, where search behavior follows the supervised-account configuration. If the search control is missing, account, region and device availability may differ; use the most restrictive available profile and supervise discovery directly.
The timer did not stop all screen use
The YouTube Kids timer limits that viewing experience, not every app or website. Use Family Link for device-wide screen-time supervision, app limits or downtime, and check whether the child can switch to another account or device.
History does not show what you expected
Look for paused or cleared watch and search history. Those actions reduce the activity available for review and can alter recommendations. Also check whether the child watched in another profile, regular YouTube or a device that was not signed in.
A blocked item reappears in recommendations
Verify that the block was applied while using the intended child profile and that the app is current. If the item is appearing through a different channel, profile or account, apply the control there as well. For a strict catalog, move to Approved Content Only rather than relying on repeated blocking.
Keep the setup safe over time
Parental controls work best as a routine rather than a one-time configuration. Use this maintenance checklist:
- Weekly or regularly: review recent videos and searches, note unexpected recommendations, and discuss anything confusing or upsetting with the child.
- When adding content: watch or preview it yourself before approving a video or channel.
- After an app or device update: confirm the child profile, search setting, timer, autoplay setting and history status.
- When the child changes devices: repeat the sign-in and profile check; do not assume settings transferred.
- As the child matures: reassess the age level, search need and amount of independence rather than automatically moving to the next band.
- After a problem video: block it, record enough information to discuss it, and reinforce the rule to stop watching and tell an adult.
Keep the parent credentials private and make the child part of the safety plan. Explain that filters can miss things, that recommendations are not endorsements, and that asking for help is always the right response to content that feels wrong.
