To set up RustAdmin, enable RCON on the Rust server, set and save an RCON password, confirm the RCON port shown by your host or server configuration, restart the server, then connect from RustAdmin using WebRcon. In RustAdmin’s Configuration tab, enter the server IP, game port, RCON port and password. The RCON port value is not consistent across published guides, so use the value your own panel or server reports rather than assuming a default.
What RustAdmin does
RustAdmin is a third-party Windows graphical interface for administering a Rust server through RCON. It does not replace the Rust server process or your hosting panel. Instead, it opens an authenticated remote-console connection so you can manage the running server without entering every command in a local console.
The connection depends on four values supplied by the server operator:

RustAdmin’s relevant connection type is WebRcon. The client and server must agree on the RCON mode, port and password; a correct IP alone is not enough.

Before you change anything
- Make sure you can edit the Rust server’s configuration and restart it.
- Record the current game port and the RCON port displayed by the host. Do not assume they are the same or that RCON is always the next port number.
- Choose a long, unique RCON password. Treat it as a full administrator credential, not as an ordinary player password.
- Use a Windows computer for the RustAdmin desktop client. Hosting guides describe RustAdmin as a free Windows GUI.
- If the server is already running, plan a restart window. The password and launch-variable changes do not become dependable until the server has restarted.
Enable RCON on a hosted server
Hosting panels expose the same underlying settings in different places. One panel may put the password in Configuration Files, while another exposes it in a Settings tab. Follow the label used by your panel; do not create a second, conflicting password field if the panel already manages one.
- Stop or prepare to restart the Rust server according to your host’s normal procedure.
- Open the panel’s Rust configuration area. If it has Configuration Files, open
server.cfg. If it has a dedicated Settings page, open that instead. - Find the field labelled RCon Password, RCON password or an equivalent name.
- Enter the new password exactly as intended. Avoid leading or trailing spaces; RustAdmin must send the same characters.
- Save the configuration.
- Open the panel’s network, overview or startup section and note the listed game port and RCON port.
- Restart the server and wait until the panel reports that it is running again.
Some hosts also expose startup variables. If your panel provides them, the relevant names reported for Rust are rcon.password, rcon.port and rcon.web. Set them only where your host expects them; a panel can otherwise overwrite values entered in a different screen.

Configure a self-hosted Rust server
On a server you manage directly, the same settings can be supplied as launch parameters or in server.cfg. The reported Facepunch configuration behavior is important: server.cfg loads at startup and takes priority over command-line values. If a command-line value appears to have no effect, inspect server.cfg for a different value.

The variables have these roles:
rcon.passworddefines the password RustAdmin must submit.rcon.portdefines the network port on which RCON listens.rcon.webselects the RCON transport. A value of1selects WebSocket RCON (WebRcon); a value of0selects the older Source-engine RCON mode, which server help text is reported to describe as deprecated.
A conceptual configuration looks like this, with values replaced by your own password and ports:
rcon.password your-long-unique-password
rcon.port YOUR_RCON_PORT
rcon.web 1Do not copy the literal placeholders into a live server. After saving the file or changing launch parameters, restart the Rust server. Then verify the effective values in the server’s own startup output or the hosting panel rather than relying only on what you typed.
Choosing the correct ports
Published setup guides disagree about the default RCON port. One summary describes rcon.port as defaulting to the same value as server.port; another describes RCON as usually using the game port plus one, with 28015 and 28016 as an example. Those rules cannot both be universal. The safe procedure is to use the RCON port your host or server actually displays.

The game port and RCON port must be entered separately in RustAdmin. A host may allocate an RCON port automatically, may expose it beside the game port, or may require you to choose it. If you choose the value yourself, ensure that it is available and not the game port.
Rust also has a query port. The reported default is one above the higher of server.port and rcon.port, and it cannot equal server.port. That query endpoint is not a substitute for the RCON port in RustAdmin. Use the field explicitly labelled RCON in your panel.
Download and install RustAdmin
- Go to rustadmin.com, the download source identified by hosting guides.
- Obtain the current Windows client offered there. The site may require an account; confirm its current sign-in or download requirement on the page.
- Install or extract the client using your normal Windows software procedure.
- Start RustAdmin after the server has restarted with RCON enabled.
Because the available RustAdmin-specific guides are several years old, check the current client’s labels against the instructions below. The essential fields remain the server address, game port, RCON port, password and WebRcon connection type.

Connect RustAdmin to the server
- Open RustAdmin.
- Open the Configuration tab.
- Set the connection type to WebRcon.
- Enter the server IP exactly as supplied by your host or server machine.
- Enter the Rust game port in the game-port field.
- Enter the separate RCON port in the RCON-port field.
- Enter the RCON password exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Click Connect.
A successful connection should leave RustAdmin connected to the running server and expose its administration interface. If it immediately reports an authentication or network error, do not repeatedly guess ports or passwords; use the checks in the next section so that each variable is verified at the source.
Verify the connection safely
First confirm that the panel still shows the server as running and that the values you entered match the post-restart configuration. Then perform a low-risk administrative action that you already understand, such as viewing normal server information through the client. Avoid testing with destructive commands while you are still confirming connectivity.
If more than one administrator needs access, check your host’s policy. One published provider guide says only one person can use RustAdmin on a server at a time. That is a provider-specific limitation, not a universal Rust rule, so ask your host before treating a second connection failure as a password problem.

Troubleshoot a failed connection
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |

| Authentication or invalid-password error | The password does not match the active server value. | Copy it again from the saved configuration, remove accidental leading or trailing spaces, check capitalization, and restart the server after changing it. |

When the port is unclear
Do not rely on a generic “game port plus one” recipe. Ask the host which port is reserved for RCON, or inspect the panel’s network and overview pages. If you operate the machine yourself, compare the effective rcon.port value with server.port, make sure they differ, restart, and use the resulting RCON value in RustAdmin.
When the password keeps failing
Set a temporary test password containing ordinary letters and numbers, save it in the authoritative configuration location, restart, and attempt one connection. If that works, replace it with a longer unique password and update RustAdmin. Never leave a simple test password in production.
Secure the RCON endpoint
RCON credentials provide full administrative access to the server. Anyone who obtains the password and can reach the RCON port may be able to control the server, so treat the endpoint like a privileged management service.
- Use a long, unique password that is not reused for the game panel, operating-system account or personal accounts.
- Restrict the RCON port to trusted administrator IP addresses where your host firewall allows it.
- Use a VPN or another private network path when practical instead of exposing RCON broadly to the public internet.
- Do not paste the password into screenshots, support tickets, chat messages or public configuration repositories.
- Rotate the password when an administrator leaves, a device is lost, or you suspect it was disclosed; save the new value, restart and update every authorized RustAdmin user.
- Keep the RustAdmin client and the server maintained through the download and update channels provided by their respective publishers.
Hosted panel or self-managed server?

The RustAdmin connection procedure is the same in both cases. What changes is where the authoritative password, port and WebRcon settings are maintained.
