Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
To set up RStudio Server on an Ubuntu VPS, install R first, install the Ubuntu/Debian package that matches the VPS release and CPU architecture, verify the service, and then protect the web endpoint before allowing public access. A default installation listens on TCP port 8787 and does not use SSL, so treat the first browser login as a connectivity test—not as a production security configuration.
This guide covers Ubuntu preparation, R and RStudio Server installation, Linux-user authentication, firewall and TLS decisions, verification, troubleshooting, and ongoing administration. The commands assume a newly provisioned Ubuntu server and an administrator account with sudo access.

Use an Ubuntu LTS image rather than an interim release for a VPS that will host interactive analysis. Posit lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as supported server platforms. Its platform-support information gives vendor support dates of 2027-04-30 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 2029-04-30 for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
| Ubuntu release | RStudio Server package availability | Vendor support date listed by Posit | When it is a sensible choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22.04 LTS | Ubuntu package family is listed | 2027-04-30 | Existing environments, older libraries, or a provider image already standardized on 22.04 |
| 24.04 LTS | Ubuntu package family is listed | 2029-04-30 | A new deployment that can use the newer LTS lifecycle |
| 26 | The current download page lists an Ubuntu 26 package family; select the release and architecture shown there at installation time | Not established by the cited support dates | Only when the package page and your provider both identify the image as supported |
Do not choose a package merely because its filename contains Ubuntu. The distribution release, CPU architecture, and package build must match. Check the image release with:

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
dpkg --print-architecture
Most VPS images are amd64, but ARM-based instances are increasingly common. Download the package built for the architecture reported by dpkg --print-architecture, not the architecture of your workstation.
Size the VPS for the work you will run
RStudio Server is a web service, but each logged-in user can start one or more R processes. Memory is therefore driven by the largest data set and the number of concurrent sessions, not by the login page itself. CPU affects package compilation and parallel analysis; disk capacity must cover the operating system, R packages, project files, temporary files, and backups.
- Estimate memory for the R sessions you expect to run simultaneously, with headroom for the operating system and package installation.
- Use fast persistent storage when projects read large data sets or create many temporary files.
- Separate long-lived project data from disposable temporary output so that a full workspace cannot consume the system disk.
- Confirm that your provider permits inbound SSH and, if needed, HTTPS traffic through both its cloud firewall and the VPS firewall.
There is no single Posit sizing figure that applies to every analysis. Start with the smallest instance that safely fits your actual workload, monitor memory and disk use, and resize before the system begins swapping or running out of space.
Prepare the Ubuntu VPS
Connect with a normal administrator account
Use an individual Linux account with sudo privileges for administration. Keep the root account out of the interactive RStudio workflow. If the provider supplied only a root login, create an administrator account before continuing:
sudo adduser vpsadmin
sudo usermod -aG sudo vpsadmin
Log out and reconnect as that account so the new group membership is active. Use SSH keys where your provider supports them, and retain a separate recovery path before changing SSH or firewall settings.
Update the operating system
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo reboot
Reconnect after the reboot and confirm the release again. Updating first reduces the chance that the R package installation encounters stale package metadata or an already-fixed system dependency.
Set DNS and firewall expectations
Give the VPS a DNS name if people will use it regularly. During the initial test, you can browse to the server’s address, but a stable name makes a later HTTPS configuration and certificate renewal practical. Identify whether filtering is enforced by a provider-level firewall, ufw, or both; a rule in only one layer is not enough if the other layer blocks the connection.

Keep SSH reachable while applying firewall changes. A basic local firewall sequence is:
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw status verbose
sudo ufw enable
Do not open port 8787 to the entire internet as a permanent policy. If you need a short, controlled test from one administrator address, restrict the rule to that address and remove it after testing:
sudo ufw allow from <YOUR_ADMIN_IP> to any port 8787 proto tcp
sudo ufw status numbered
sudo ufw delete allow from <YOUR_ADMIN_IP> to any port 8787 proto tcp
The angle-bracket value in these commands is the public address from which you are connecting; replace it in the shell and do not paste the brackets literally.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Install R before RStudio Server
RStudio Server launches the R runtime installed on the host, so R is a prerequisite rather than an optional add-on. On a standard Ubuntu image, install the distribution R packages after updating the package index:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y r-base
Check that the executable is available and record the version for your deployment notes:
R --version
command -v R
Posit’s installation guidance favors an R installation method that can support multiple R versions and avoid unexpectedly replacing an existing version during routine package updates. If your projects require more than one R release, design that version-management policy before installing production packages. Test which R executable a session should use, document the choice, and avoid changing the system default casually because existing projects may depend on it.
Install any additional system libraries required by your own R packages only when those packages document them. RStudio Server itself does not eliminate the operating-system dependencies of packages that compile native code.

Download the matching RStudio Server package
Use Posit’s official RStudio Server download page and select the Ubuntu/Debian .deb file that matches both the VPS release and the architecture reported earlier. The current package page lists families for Ubuntu 22, 24, and 26; the exact build number changes, so choose the file displayed for your release at the time you install.
Download the file to a temporary directory on the VPS or transfer it there over SSH. Before installation, confirm that the file is a Debian package and that no unrelated .deb files are in the same directory:
cd /tmp
ls -lh *.deb
dpkg-deb --info ./rstudio-server-*.deb | head
The wildcard in the next command is intentional only when the directory contains the one RStudio Server package you selected:
sudo apt install ./rstudio-server-*.deb
Using apt install with a local package lets Ubuntu resolve dependencies from the configured repositories. If apt reports an architecture or dependency mismatch, stop and recheck the Ubuntu release, dpkg --print-architecture output, and the package you downloaded; do not force installation with low-level database options.
Recommended Free Tools
The package-based installation creates /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf. The default service listens on port 8787, and SSL is disabled unless you configure a secure deployment.
Start and verify the service
Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now rstudio-server
sudo systemctl status rstudio-server --no-pager
Run Posit’s installation check from the VPS:
sudo rstudio-server verify-installation
This command checks the installation and the local R connection. A successful result does not prove that a cloud firewall, local firewall, DNS record, browser route, or PAM login is correctly configured.
Confirm that something is listening on the expected port:

For an initial connectivity check, open http://SERVER_ADDRESS:8787 in a browser, replacing SERVER_ADDRESS with the VPS address or DNS name. Use plain HTTP only on a private or otherwise controlled network while testing. Do not interpret the appearance of the login page as evidence that credentials are protected on a public connection.

RStudio Server authenticates browser logins through the server’s PAM configuration. On Debian and Ubuntu, the system-default PAM profile is used unless an RStudio-specific profile is configured. The account therefore needs to be a real login-capable Linux user with a valid password and the permissions required for its projects.
Create a least-privilege analyst account rather than sharing an administrator account:
sudo adduser analyst
Set a strong, unique password when prompted, then place project files in a directory that the account can read and write. Add the user to additional groups only when a specific data source or device requires it. Do not make the account a system account, and do not publish a workflow that logs in to RStudio Server as root.

If your organization requires a custom authentication policy, create or modify /etc/pam.d/rstudio only after understanding the PAM modules already used by the operating system. A malformed profile can lock out every browser user. Keep a separate SSH administrator session open, change one rule at a time, and test a non-privileged account before closing the recovery session.
Secure RStudio Server before public exposure
Why the default endpoint is not sufficient
The default installation has SSL disabled. Posit strongly recommends running RStudio Server on a secured network or enabling TLS/SSL before exposing it to the public internet. Port 8787 is a service port, not a security boundary: anyone who can reach it can at least see the login endpoint and attempt authentication.
Choose a network exposure model
- Private access: Keep the VPS on a private network or reach it through an approved VPN or SSH tunnel. Allow port 8787 only from that private address range.
- Reverse-proxy HTTPS: Put a TLS-capable reverse proxy in front of RStudio Server, publish only TCP 443, and restrict direct access to port 8787 so that only the proxy can reach it. Maintain the certificate and proxy configuration separately from the RStudio package.
- Supported RStudio TLS configuration: Use the current RStudio Server documentation for the release you installed, configure certificates and private keys with restrictive filesystem permissions, and test renewal before the existing certificate expires.
Whichever model you choose, enforce the same restriction at the provider firewall and with ufw when both are present. A common production policy is to allow SSH only from administrative addresses, allow HTTPS from intended users, and leave 8787 inaccessible from the public internet.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Apply firewall rules deliberately
After HTTPS or private access is working, remove any temporary broad rule for 8787. Review the resulting policy:
sudo ufw status numbered
sudo ss -ltnp
If a remote browser cannot connect, test each boundary separately: DNS resolution, provider firewall, VPS firewall, the listener on 8787, and the TLS or proxy listener. Do not solve a network problem by opening every port.

The main configuration file created by the package is /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf. Back it up before making changes:
sudo cp -a /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf /etc/rstudio/rserver.conf.backup
Keep configuration changes small and record why each one was made. Restart the service only after validating the file and retain an SSH session in case a change prevents startup.
For service state, use:
sudo systemctl status rstudio-server --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u rstudio-server --no-pager -n 100
When startup fails after the daemon has detached, the underlying fatal error is usually in:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors/var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log
Read the most recent entries with:
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log
Protect logs because they can contain usernames, paths, package information, or diagnostic details useful to an attacker. Include them in your rotation and retention policy without exposing them through the web server.
Troubleshoot the common failure branches
The package will not install
- Run
dpkg --print-architectureand compare it with the package architecture. - Confirm the Ubuntu release with
cat /etc/os-releaseand select the corresponding package family. - Run
sudo apt updateand retry withsudo apt install ./rstudio-server-*.debfrom a directory containing only the selected package. - Do not force a package for another release; obtain the matching build instead.
The service is inactive or exits immediately
- Check the unit state with
sudo systemctl status rstudio-server --no-pager. - Read
sudo journalctl -u rstudio-server --no-pager -n 100. - Inspect
/var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log, where the daemon’s fatal startup message is usually recorded. - Run
sudo rstudio-server verify-installationafter correcting the reported R, permission, or configuration issue.
The browser cannot reach port 8787
- On the VPS, confirm a listener with
sudo ss -ltnp | grep 8787. - Check the provider firewall and
sudo ufw status verbose. - Verify that the address in the browser resolves to the VPS and that the browser is using the correct protocol and port.
- If the service is intentionally private, connect through the approved private route rather than opening the port publicly.
The login page appears but credentials fail
- Confirm that the account is a normal Linux user with a valid password and is not a system account.
- Test the same account through an ordinary local Linux login path.
- Review the PAM configuration, including whether
/etc/pam.d/rstudioexists and was changed. - Keep an administrator SSH session open while repairing authentication so a PAM mistake does not remove your recovery path.
Verification succeeds but external access still fails
verify-installation checks installation and the local R connection; it does not validate external routing, cloud firewall rules, TLS termination, DNS, or the final authentication policy. Treat these as separate tests and document which layer has passed.
Operate the server after installation
Keep software and R versions intentional
Apply Ubuntu security updates on a schedule, but review R and RStudio Server package changes before applying them to a production workload. Projects can depend on a particular R release or package ABI. If you maintain multiple R versions, define how users select them and test upgrades in a separate environment first.
Back up what users can recreate and what they cannot
Back up project source files, data sets that do not exist elsewhere, environment or lock files used to reproduce packages, and the RStudio configuration you deliberately changed. A package reinstall can restore the server binary; it cannot recreate deleted analysis files. Store backups away from the VPS and periodically perform a restore test.
Monitor the practical limits
Watch memory, swap, CPU, disk capacity, service availability, and the growth of /var/log/rstudio/rstudio-server/rserver.log. A VPS that is healthy with one small session can become unstable when several users load large data sets. Establish alerts before disk exhaustion or memory pressure causes sessions to terminate.
Quick Recap
Deployment checklist
- Select an Ubuntu LTS image supported for your chosen RStudio Server package.
- Create or confirm a normal administrator account with
sudoaccess. - Update Ubuntu and reboot if required.
- Confirm the release and architecture with
/etc/os-releaseanddpkg --print-architecture. - Install and verify R before installing RStudio Server.
- Download the matching Ubuntu/Debian
.debfrom Posit’s current package page. - Install it with
sudo apt install ./rstudio-server-*.debfrom a controlled directory. - Enable the service, run
sudo rstudio-server verify-installation, and inspect the listener. - Create or use a least-privilege regular Linux user for browser sessions.
- Keep PAM at the Ubuntu default unless a documented custom policy is required.
- Choose private access or configure TLS before public exposure.
- Restrict SSH, HTTPS, and port 8787 with deliberate provider and VPS firewall rules.
- Record the configuration, backup plan, log-retention policy, and upgrade procedure.
