For a repeating action, use Google Tasks: open a task, choose Add date/time, tap Repeat, set the interval and an end condition, then save. Use a recurring Google Calendar event for appointments or scheduled activities, and the Android Clock app for an alarm that repeats on selected weekdays.

The labels can differ slightly by phone and app version. The workflows below use Google’s documented Android controls and explain what each reminder type can—and cannot—do.

Choose the right Android reminder type

Android has three built-in ways to create a repeating alert. Selecting the right one first prevents problems later, such as expecting an alarm to track completion or expecting a task to reserve time on your calendar.

Use case Best tool How recurrence works Important limits or behavior
A task you must do, such as taking medicine or submitting a report Google Tasks Repeat by day, week, month or year; choose an interval and an end condition Completing one instance advances the series to its next scheduled instance. Shared tasks and subtasks cannot repeat.
An appointment, class, meeting or other scheduled activity Google Calendar Create an event and replace Does not repeat with a frequency A repeating event is limited to 730 occurrences. Individual occurrences can be handled from Calendar.
A simple alert, such as waking up or a weekday medication alarm Android Clock Edit an alarm and select the weekdays on which it repeats This is an alarm, not a task series; it has no task completion history.

All three options are part of the standard Google/Android software workflow described here; a particular phone model, smartwatch or paid reminder service is not required.

Set up a recurring task in Google Tasks

Google Tasks is the most suitable choice when the reminder represents an action that you will mark complete. A recurring task keeps the next occurrence attached to the same task instead of making you recreate it.

1. Create or open the task

  1. Open the Google Tasks app.
  2. Tap Add a new task (or the equivalent add button) to create a task, or tap an existing task to edit it.
  3. Enter a short, actionable title, such as “Take evening medication” or “Submit weekly expenses.” Keep details that do not affect the schedule in the task’s notes.

2. Add the first date and time

  1. Inside the task, tap Add date/time.
  2. Choose the date on which the series should begin.
  3. Add a time if the notification must arrive at a particular hour. Saving only a date creates a dated task but does not specify an hour.

A start date is important: it determines when the first occurrence appears and provides the anchor from which the repeat pattern is calculated.

3. Choose the repeat interval

  1. Tap Repeat.
  2. Under Repeats every, select the available unit: day, week, month or year.
  3. Set the interval offered by the app. For example, a daily pattern can be every day, while a weekly pattern can use the week interval and the weekday controls presented by your version of Tasks.

The exact controls can vary with the installed app version. Review the preview or repetition information before saving so that a monthly or yearly task starts on the date you intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Decide when the series ends

  1. In the repeat editor, find Ends.
  2. Choose Never for an ongoing routine.
  3. Choose On and enter a final date when the routine should stop on a known day.
  4. Choose After and enter the number of occurrences when you need a fixed number of repetitions.

5. Save and verify

  1. Tap OK to accept the repeat settings.
  2. Tap Done to save the task.
  3. Open the task again and confirm that its repetition information shows the intended interval, start date, end condition and time.

Make the first occurrence close enough to the real routine that you can test the notification. If the task appears without a repeat label, reopen it and repeat the steps above; a date alone does not create a series.

How notifications work for recurring Tasks

Timed versus untimed tasks

A task with both a date and a time notifies at that scheduled time. Google’s Tasks help states that a task with no time notifies at 9:00 a.m. on its scheduled date. Therefore, add a time whenever “sometime that day” is not specific enough—for example, use 08:00 for a morning dose instead of relying on the default.

Notifications are generated for each scheduled instance. Completing the current instance moves the task series forward; it does not permanently complete future occurrences.

Turn on Tasks notifications

  1. Open Google Tasks.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Open Settings, then Notifications.
  4. Turn on All Tasks notifications.

If another Google app that can notify about the same task is installed, Google notes that only one of those apps notifies for a task. This can make a task appear to be missing an alert when the notification is actually being handled by another app.

Allow Android to schedule alarms and reminders

For delayed or missing alerts, check Android’s special permission for scheduled notifications:

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Open Special app access.
  4. Tap Alarms & Reminders.
  5. Select Tasks and enable Allow setting alarms and reminders.

Manufacturers can rename, relocate or redesign these screens, so search Settings for “Alarms & Reminders” if the path is not identical. The permission is separate from the ordinary notification switch; check both.

Edit, complete or stop a repeating task

Change the schedule

Open the task and edit its repetition information to change the date, time, interval or end condition. Google Calendar can also expose the task’s date, time, repetition and completion state when Tasks are shown there. After saving, check the next occurrence rather than assuming the old schedule was retained.

Complete one occurrence

Mark the current task instance complete when you finish it. The series then advances to its next scheduled instance. This is different from deleting the task: deletion removes the task instead of recording completion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove only one occurrence

When a single occurrence should be removed but the routine should continue, use Google Calendar to delete that occurrence. Do not stop the entire series unless every future instance should disappear.

Stop and restart a series

Stopping a repeating series is permanent for that series. If you later want the same routine again, create a new repeating task; the stopped series cannot be restarted as the same series.

Know which tasks cannot repeat

  • Shared tasks cannot be set to repeat.
  • Subtasks cannot be set to repeat.
  • A repeating task cannot be moved to another list.
  • Calendar displays only a limited number of future instances at once; additional instances appear as time advances.

If a routine needs collaboration, recurring subtasks or movement between lists, redesign it as separate non-repeating tasks or a Calendar event rather than trying to force a repeating Tasks series.

Create a recurring appointment in Google Calendar

Use a Calendar event when the reminder represents time on a schedule—for example, a weekly appointment, a recurring class or a monthly meeting. An event is visible alongside other commitments and is not dependent on checking off a task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android setup steps

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Tap Create, then choose Event.
  3. Enter the event title.
  4. Set the starting date and time, and add an end time if appropriate.
  5. Tap Does not repeat.
  6. Select the required frequency and any available repeat details.
  7. Save the event.

Reopen the saved event to verify that it displays the repeat pattern. If the activity is a deadline rather than a time block, Calendar’s help documentation says deadline notifications occur at 9:00 a.m. local time on the deadline date when no other time is specified.

Calendar’s occurrence limit

Google Calendar repeating events are limited to 730 occurrences. That is a product limit, not a recommendation to end a real-world appointment after 730 meetings. For a longer-running routine, create a new series before the limit is reached and check that the transition does not create a gap.

Change or delete one event in the series

Open the event in Calendar and choose the edit or delete option that applies to the single occurrence or the entire series. Use the single-occurrence choice when one date changes but the underlying schedule remains intact. Tasks’ repeat limitations do not remove this Calendar option for events and task instances managed through Calendar.

Set a repeating alarm in the Android Clock app

Choose Clock when the desired result is an alarm sound or alarm-style alert, not a record of completed work. This is usually the clearest option for wake-up alarms and alerts that repeat on fixed weekdays.

  1. Open the Android Clock app.
  2. Open the Alarm tab.
  3. Create an alarm or tap an existing alarm to edit it.
  4. Set the alarm time.
  5. Select the days of the week on which it should repeat.
  6. Save the alarm and leave it enabled.

Clock alarms repeat on the selected weekdays, whereas Tasks repeats are based on a task schedule and completion. If you need a visible history of whether an action was done, create a Task instead of relying on an alarm.

Use Google Assistant to create a task by voice

Google Assistant can create and manage Google Tasks by voice on Android. A Google Account is required. Google’s example request is: Hey Google, remind me to call Mom at noon tomorrow. That example creates a timed task; it does not guarantee that every language, account or device supports every voice scheduling phrase.

Voice workflow

  1. Invoke Assistant with “Hey Google” or your device’s configured Assistant method.
  2. State the action and the time or date clearly.
  3. After Assistant confirms, open Google Tasks or the Tasks area in the Google app to check the title, date and time.
  4. If you need recurrence, open the created task and set Repeat manually, unless Assistant presents a repeat control that your account supports.

Google’s current notes for some AI-supported actions specify English, United States and age 18 or older. Availability can change, and Google advises checking tasks because AI-generated actions can contain mistakes. Treat the spoken result as a shortcut, then verify the saved task before relying on it.

Troubleshoot a recurring reminder that did not alert

The task exists but no notification appeared

  • Confirm the task has a date and, when needed, a time.
  • In Tasks, check Profile picture > Settings > Notifications > All Tasks notifications.
  • In Android Settings, grant Tasks the Alarms & Reminders special access permission.
  • Check the phone’s general notification permission and any mode that suppresses alerts, such as Do Not Disturb.
  • Look in other Google apps that can notify about Tasks; only one notifying app may deliver the alert.

The alert arrived at 9 a.m. instead of the expected time

The task probably has a date but no time. Edit the task, use Add date/time, and set the desired hour. For a Calendar deadline, Google documents the 9 a.m. local-time default when no time is specified.

The repeat option is missing

Verify that you are editing a normal personal task rather than a shared task or subtask; those types cannot repeat. Also check that you are in the task’s details view, where Add date/time and Repeat appear. App updates and device interfaces can move controls.

The next occurrence is not visible

Calendar shows only a limited number of future instances for a repeating task. The remaining instances appear over time. Open the task in Google Tasks to inspect its repetition information and next due date.

A stopped series will not resume

This is expected behavior. A stopped series cannot be restarted as that same series. Create a new repeating task with the desired starting date and end condition.

The time or date looks wrong after traveling

Review the task or event’s saved time and the phone’s time-zone settings. A scheduled notification is interpreted using the device and account context available to the app; exact behavior can vary by device configuration.

Attend a class every Tuesday for one term Google Calendar event with a weekly repeat and an end date The class occupies calendar time and can end automatically after the term.
Wake up Monday through Friday at 6:30 a.m. Clock alarm with Monday–Friday selected An alarm is simpler than a task when no completion record is needed.
Remember a monthly report until a fixed number of submissions Google Tasks with a monthly repeat and After set to the required occurrence count The series ends by count rather than requiring a manual stop.
Keep a meeting recurring but cancel one holiday occurrence Google Calendar event; delete only the holiday occurrence The rest of the series remains intact.

Capacity and planning limits

Google Tasks Help lists capacity limits of 100,000 tasks across all lists and 20,000 uncompleted tasks per list. These are product limits, not a reason to create duplicate series. Archive or delete obsolete tasks and avoid creating a new series every time a routine changes unless the original has actually been stopped.

For ordinary personal routines, the practical constraints are usually notification permissions, an omitted time, or choosing the wrong tool—not the total task count. Check the schedule and alert settings immediately after creating a series so an error is found before the first important occurrence.
