Enable Conan Exiles RCON by adding an [RconPlugin] section to the server’s Game.ini, setting RconEnabled=1, choosing a unique RconPassword, and specifying a TCP port (25575 is the documented default). Start the dedicated server, permit that TCP port through the host firewall, then connect with an RCON client such as mcrcon. Once connected, run help to see the commands supported by that server build and its installed mods.
This guide covers the complete self-hosted setup, network requirements, the difference between Conan’s RCON and BattlEye BE RCon, command discovery, logging, and the failure cases that most often prevent a connection.

What Conan Exiles RCON does
RCON (remote console) is a network service for administering a running dedicated server without opening the game’s console locally. Conan Exiles handles its RCON service through the [RconPlugin] section in Game.ini. The service is separate from the normal game, query, and pinger ports, and it should be treated as privileged remote access: anyone who can authenticate can issue administrative commands that the server accepts.
The documented default RCON endpoint is TCP port 25575. You can change it, but the number in the running server configuration, firewall rule, port-forwarding rule, and RCON client must all match.

The values above are Funcom’s documented defaults (2024). RCON uses TCP while the game, pinger, and query services use UDP, so opening a UDP game port does not make RCON reachable.
Requirements and preparation
- A Windows installation of the Conan Exiles Dedicated Server from Steam’s Library > Tools section.
- Permission to edit the server’s configuration files and launch it with
StartServer.batorConanSandboxServer.exe. - A TCP firewall rule (and, when applicable, a router or hosting-panel port-forward) for the RCON port.
- An RCON client. The examples below use
mcrcon. - A long, unique RCON secret that is not reused for the game password, admin password, Steam account, or any other service.
Stop the server before editing configuration files. Keeping a copy of the original files makes it easier to recover from a syntax mistake, and prevents a running process from overwriting your changes during shutdown.

Install and configure the dedicated server
1. Install the server tool
In the Steam client, open Library, change the filter to show Tools, and install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server. Let Steam finish its update before editing files; a later update can replace templates or change available settings.
2. Set the visible server identity and game password
Funcom’s setup places these values in:
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerEngine.iniUse the [OnlineSubsystem] section and the keys supplied by the server’s current configuration template for the server name and game password. Do not put the RCON secret in this section. The game password controls entry to the server; it is not the RCON credential.
3. Set the in-game administrator password
Open:
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.iniUnder [ServerSettings], add or edit:
AdminPassword=YOUR_DESIRED_ADMIN_PASSWORD_HEREThis password is used for Conan’s in-game administrative functions. It is distinct from both the game password and the RCON password, even if the configuration files are in the same directory.

Enable Conan RCON in Game.ini
Recommended file-based configuration
Open the server’s Game.ini. Add a single [RconPlugin] section, or edit the existing section so that it contains:

RconPort=25575RconEnabled=1turns the Conan RCON service on.RconPasswordis the secret the client must supply. Replace the example with your own value and keep it out of public configuration posts and screenshots.RconPortselects the TCP listener. Port25575is the documented default; the reference notes that the port line may be omitted when the default is acceptable, but specifying it explicitly makes firewall and client configuration easier to audit.
Preserve the INI syntax: section headers use square brackets, keys use one equals sign, and there should be no quotation marks around the password unless the server’s own template requires them. If another [RconPlugin] section already exists, edit it rather than creating competing sections.
Equivalent launch arguments
Instead of (or in environments that override) the INI values, pass the settings when launching the server:
ConanSandboxServer.exe -RconEnabled=1 -RconPassword=REPLACE_WITH_A_UNIQUE_SECRET -RconPort=25575Use one authoritative method for each setting. If a hosting panel or startup script supplies command-line arguments, check those arguments when a value in Game.ini appears to be ignored; the process that actually launches the server is the configuration that matters.
Start the server and open the network path
Start the process
Launch the server with StartServer.bat or directly with ConanSandboxServer.exe, using the same working directory and arguments your normal startup procedure uses. Wait until the server has completed initialization before testing RCON. A client connecting during startup can receive a refusal even when the final configuration is correct.

Allow TCP 25575 (or your chosen port)
Create an inbound firewall rule for the selected TCP port on the machine running the server. If the server is behind a router, forward that TCP port to the server’s private address. A rented server or control panel may require adding the port to an allocation or security-group rule instead of changing Windows Firewall directly.
Limit the rule’s source addresses to your administration workstation, VPN range, or management network whenever the hosting environment supports it. Do not assume that opening UDP 7777, UDP 7778, or UDP 27015 also opens RCON; those services do not carry RCON traffic.
For a local test, use the server’s private address. From outside the network, use the public address that is actually routed to the server. Carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, cloud security groups, and a changed public IP can prevent an external connection even when the local process is listening.

The options specify the host, TCP port, password, and the client’s connection/terminal behavior. If you selected a different RCON port, change -P to that number.

After authentication, enter:
helphelp is the safest first command because it asks the running server which commands it accepts. The available namespace can differ by server version and installed mods; a command shown in an online list may be unavailable or behave differently on your instance. Treat the output from your own server as the authoritative command list.
What a successful test looks like
- The client reaches the target address without a timeout or immediate refusal.
- The server accepts the password and leaves you at an interactive prompt (or returns command output, depending on the client mode).
helpreturns a command list or help text.
A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that a command was authorized or understood. Check the logs when output is empty or the server appears not to react.
Where Conan records RCON activity
Conan’s RCON reference identifies two useful log files:
RconCommandLog.login the server’sLogsfolder records commands.ConanSandbox.logrecords connections and broader server events.
Review both files immediately after a failed login, a command that appears to do nothing, or a restart. The timestamps help distinguish a client-side connection problem from a command that reached the server but was rejected, ignored, or altered by a mod.

Connection times out
- Confirm that the server process is running and has finished startup.
- Read the active
Game.inior startup command and record the actualRconPort. - Verify that the client uses the same number and TCP, not UDP.
- Check the host firewall, router forwarding, cloud security group, and any hosting-panel allocation.
- Confirm that you are using the correct private address for a local connection or public address for an external one.
A timeout usually indicates that traffic is being dropped or routed to the wrong machine, rather than a bad password.

Connection is refused
A refusal means the address was reachable but no service accepted the connection on that port. Check for a typo in RconPort, a server that has not finished starting, a disabled RconEnabled value, or a startup script that launches a different installation than the one you edited. The server log can show whether the RCON listener initialized.

Authentication fails
Copy the password from the active configuration carefully, without leading or trailing spaces. Make sure the client is connecting to the intended server and port; a password can appear invalid when the client has reached another service or another server instance. Do not solve the problem by reusing the game or admin password. Replace the RCON secret with a new unique value, restart the server, and update the client if you suspect it was exposed.
Login succeeds but commands do nothing
Run help and compare the command spelling with the returned list. Then inspect RconCommandLog.log and ConanSandbox.log. A command can be absent in your server version, restricted by permissions, changed by a mod, or accepted without visible chat output. The command log establishes whether Conan received it.
The edited settings keep reverting
Stop the server before editing, then check the startup batch file and hosting panel for command-line values. A launch argument such as -RconPort can override the value you changed in an INI file. Also verify that you edited the active WindowsServer configuration directory rather than a backup, test, or single-player installation.
Conan RCON versus BattlEye BE RCon
These are two different administration systems. A client or command that works with one is not automatically valid for the other.

BattlEye’s documentation describes sending commands by connecting through BE RCon and entering them in its console. If your goal is Conan gameplay administration, configure and connect to Conan RCON. If your goal is BattlEye’s player or ban controls, configure BE RCon separately and use its command set. Do not point a Conan RCON client at the BattlEye port or expect BattlEye commands at port 25575.

Security practices for a production server
- Use separate secrets. Keep the RCON password different from the game password,
AdminPassword, operating-system credentials, and hosting-panel credentials. - Make the secret long and random. A short word is unsuitable for a service that can administer the entire server.
- Restrict exposure. Permit only trusted source addresses, a VPN, or a management network when possible. Avoid exposing RCON to the entire internet just because a client is convenient.
- Protect configuration files. Do not publish
Game.ini, startup scripts, control-panel screenshots, or log excerpts containing credentials. - Audit logs. Check
RconCommandLog.logandConanSandbox.logafter maintenance and after any suspected unauthorized access. - Rotate after disclosure. Change
RconPassword, restart the service, and update every authorized client if the secret appears in a chat message, repository, ticket, or shared backup. - Keep the port deliberate. Changing 25575 can reduce accidental collisions, but it is not a substitute for a firewall and strong authentication.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Install or update Conan Exiles Dedicated Server from Steam’s Tools list.
- Set the server identity and game password in
Engine.iniunder[OnlineSubsystem]. - Set
AdminPasswordunder[ServerSettings]inServerSettings.ini. - Add
[RconPlugin],RconEnabled=1, a uniqueRconPassword, and an explicitRconPorttoGame.ini. - Check the launch command for conflicting RCON arguments.
- Allow the selected TCP port through the host and network firewalls.
- Start with
StartServer.batorConanSandboxServer.exeand wait for initialization. - Connect with
mcrconusing the same host, port, and password. - Run
help, then verify activity in the two Conan log files. - If BattlEye administration is also required, configure BE RCon separately in its own configuration file and use its own port and commands.
