To prioritize video calls and gaming, sign in to your router or mesh app, open its QoS, traffic-priority, application-priority, or device-priority controls, enable the feature, then select the call or gaming activity—or the device running it. If the router offers SQM (Smart Queue Management), use it when queueing under load causes lag, but confirm that the hardware can shape your connection without an unacceptable speed loss.

Menu names, supported modes, and even whether priorities are activity-based or device-based vary by model and firmware. The procedure below gives a safe decision path and shows how to verify that the change helps your connection rather than merely changing a label.

What QoS does—and what it cannot do

Quality of Service (QoS) controls how a router treats competing traffic when a link is busy. During a large upload, cloud backup, game download, or video stream, the router can give selected packets earlier service or reserve part of the available capacity for them. That can keep a call understandable and game controls responsive while less time-sensitive traffic waits.

QoS does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet plan. It reallocates existing capacity. ASUS describes its controls this way: “These features don’t increase total bandwidth — instead, they help you use your existing bandwidth more efficiently.” If the connection is already idle, enabling QoS normally cannot make an application faster; its value appears when traffic competes for a constrained link.

QoS versus SQM

Traditional QoS is mainly a priority system: traffic classes, applications, or devices are placed ahead of others. SQM is a queue-management approach intended to control the queues that form when a connection is saturated. OpenWrt describes SQM as combining traffic shaping, active queue management, and scheduling. It is particularly useful for bufferbloat—excess latency caused by queues filling under load.

These are related but not interchangeable. A router may expose classic QoS, SQM, both, or neither. Some platforms do not permit both at the same time; GL.iNet documents such a limitation on its supported platform. Do not assume that stacking every available switch is beneficial or even possible.

Before you change a setting

Identify the exact equipment and operating mode

Write down the router or mesh model, hardware revision, and firmware version. Search that model’s manual or support documentation for QoS, traffic priority, application priority, device priority, Adaptive QoS, Adaptive QoE, or SQM. A feature shown for one model in a product family may be absent from another.

Also check whether the unit is acting as the gateway. Controls generally affect traffic that passes through the router in its relevant gateway mode. A device configured as an access point, bridge, repeater, VPN endpoint, server, or drop-in system may not expose the same controls or may not be able to shape all traffic. GL.iNet’s documentation, for example, limits SQM to specified operating modes rather than every VPN or server configuration.

Record a baseline

Test the call or game before changing anything. Repeat the test when another household device is actively uploading or downloading. Note whether the problem is high ping, jitter, dropped audio or video, rubber-banding, or complete loss of connectivity. If the issue occurs only near the Wi-Fi access point’s edge, during interference, or beyond your internet provider’s network, router QoS may not be the controlling factor.

  • Use the same device, room, and connection type for before-and-after tests.
  • Run one test with the connection mostly idle and one while a known upload or download is active.
  • Record the router’s peak speed before enabling SQM, because shaping can lower it.

Find and enable the router’s QoS controls

The exact path is model-specific, but the workflow is consistent: open the router’s administration page or companion app, locate the traffic-management area, enable the feature, choose what should receive priority, and apply the change.

Web administration page

  1. Connect to the home network, preferably over Ethernet while configuring.
  2. Open the router’s documented local administration address and sign in with an administrator account.
  3. Look under sections such as Advanced, Traffic Manager, QoS, Bandwidth Control, or Traffic Prioritization.
  4. Turn on the QoS or traffic-priority switch. Read any warning about throughput, operating mode, or incompatible features.
  5. Select an activity, application, or device, enter shaping rates if requested, and choose Apply, Save, or the equivalent control.

Companion apps and mesh systems

Mesh products often put priorities only in their mobile app. TP-Link documents separate paths for supported conventional routers and Deco systems, while NETGEAR documents a Nighthawk web-interface path. These are examples of different implementations, not universal menu instructions. In an app, open the network-management or tools area and look for QoS, client priority, device priority, or an activity selector. If the option is missing, confirm that the app is managing the main router, not only a satellite node, and that the firmware is current.

What the controls may look like

There are three common designs:

Control design What you select Best fit Limitation
Activity or application priority Gaming, work-from-home, video conferencing, streaming, or a named application When several devices use the same type of traffic The router’s database may not recognize a particular app or encrypted traffic flow
Device priority A phone, computer, console, or other client When one device needs consistently favorable treatment All traffic from that device may receive priority, including downloads that do not need it
Scenario or preset mode A vendor-defined profile such as Gaming or Work From Home Quick setup when the preset matches your household Rules and bandwidth allocations may be hidden or inflexible

Prioritize video calls

Choose a work or conferencing activity when available

If the interface offers a work-from-home, video-conferencing, or communications preset, select it and assign the computer or phone used for calls. Some routers let you choose individual applications; others recognize categories or provide only device-level priority. Encrypted call traffic can make application recognition imperfect, so device priority may be the more dependable option on a small network.

Prioritize the call device instead

  1. Open the connected-device or client list.
  2. Identify the computer, phone, or tablet that hosts the call. Check its hostname or MAC address rather than guessing from a generic device name.
  3. Mark it as high priority or add it to the conferencing rule.
  4. Leave unrelated household devices at normal priority unless they are causing a measurable problem.

If two people make calls at once, prioritize both devices if the router permits it. A single “video calls” preset may not reserve a fixed amount of bandwidth; it may simply move matching packets ahead of other queues. Retest with a simultaneous upload, because that is when the rule matters.

Prioritize gaming

Use a gaming preset or application rule

Select a Gaming activity or add the game, console, or gaming computer to the highest-priority class. Some vendor interfaces maintain application databases; ASUS describes an Adaptive QoE system with Gaming and Work From Home presets and recommends an AI Balance mode when gaming and video calls occur together on its platform. Treat that recommendation as platform-specific: another router may offer different presets or no application database.

Use device priority for consoles

Consoles can be easier to prioritize by device than by game. From the client list, select the console’s persistent device entry and assign high priority. If the console receives a new identity after privacy settings or a reset, the rule may stop matching; update the rule for the new entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not prioritize every device

Giving high priority to several streaming boxes, downloads, phones, and consoles defeats the purpose of a scarce priority queue. Start with the one or two devices that need responsiveness. If a call and a game must remain usable at the same time, use a balancing mode where offered, or assign both activities deliberately instead of assuming that a single gaming preset will also protect calls.

Enter upload and download rates correctly

Some QoS and SQM implementations ask for the connection’s download and upload capacity or for shaping rates. Enter current, realistic values for the actual bottleneck. There is no universal number or percentage that works for every broadband plan, and the available evidence does not establish a single recommended rate.

Use measured capacity, not an advertised peak

Run several speed tests at different times, preferably over Ethernet, and consider the lower sustained result when the service varies. If the router asks for separate upload and download values, enter each direction separately. A rate that is too high can leave queues outside the shaper; a rate that is too low wastes capacity. ASUS specifically states that values for its bandwidth limiter must be below the ISP-provided maximum for the limit to take effect.

Change one value at a time

  1. Record the current upload and download results.
  2. Enter conservative values below the measured bottleneck, if the router’s documentation requires that approach.
  3. Apply the setting and test a call or game while the connection is busy.
  4. Increase the rate gradually only if responsiveness remains good and the lost peak speed is unacceptable.

The correct value depends on the access technology, service variation, router implementation, and whether the bottleneck is upstream or downstream. Keep a note of the values that produced the best compromise so a firmware reset does not erase your working configuration.

When SQM is the better choice

Use SQM when your main symptom is latency or jitter that appears whenever an upload or download fills the connection. Bufferbloat can make voice calls break up, video chat lag, and games feel delayed even though a speed test reports a high nominal rate. SQM continuously shapes traffic and manages queues so they do not grow as aggressively.

Check the cost in router performance

SQM runs on the router’s CPU. OpenWrt notes that CPU limits can prevent a slower router from shaping at full line speed, and GL.iNet warns that SQM may reduce peak throughput and has hardware, mode, and feature-compatibility constraints. After enabling it, test maximum throughput and responsiveness under load. If download speed falls substantially or the router becomes unstable, the hardware may not be able to process the configured rate.

Do not assume QoS and SQM can be stacked

Read the model’s documentation before enabling both. Some platforms require one or the other, and GL.iNet documents QoS and SQM as mutually exclusive on its supported platform. If both are available and stacking is documented, follow the vendor’s order and compatibility notes; otherwise choose the feature that addresses your symptom.

Apply the setting and test under real congestion

  1. Save or apply the configuration and wait for the router to confirm that it has accepted the change. A reboot may be required on some models.
  2. Reconnect the call or game so it establishes a fresh traffic flow.
  3. Start a sustained upload or download on another device. Use the same workload used for your baseline rather than an idle speed test.
  4. Join a video call and speak for several minutes, or play a latency-sensitive game. Watch for audio gaps, frozen video, ping spikes, rubber-banding, or delayed controls.
  5. Repeat the test with the priority rule disabled, keeping the competing traffic the same. Compare the experience, not only the headline speed.

There is no universal latency threshold in the available vendor documentation, so judge the result against your own baseline. A configuration is useful if it keeps the call or game responsive during the household’s normal congestion without causing an unacceptable loss of capacity.

Troubleshoot when QoS does not help

The QoS or SQM menu is missing

  • Verify the exact model, hardware revision, and firmware; feature lists differ within a product family.
  • Check whether the unit is in gateway/router mode rather than access-point, bridge, repeater, or another restricted mode.
  • Look in the companion app as well as the web interface. Mesh systems may expose the control in only one of them.
  • Read the current manual after a firmware update, because menu paths and supported capabilities can change.

The rule appears to do nothing

Confirm that the selected device is the one actually generating the call or game traffic and that its address has not changed. Check that the router is the congestion bottleneck. Saturation elsewhere in the provider’s network, a weak or interfered Wi-Fi link, an overloaded remote game server, or a VPN path may not respond to a local priority rule.

A bandwidth limiter has no effect

Recheck the configured rate and the vendor’s requirement. For the ASUS feature documented in the source material, the bandwidth-limiter value must be below the ISP-provided maximum. Also verify that the rule is attached to the intended device or class and that another feature has not overridden it.

SQM lowers speed too much

Measure throughput with SQM on and off, then check the router’s CPU or performance guidance if available. A slower processor may not sustain the line rate while shaping. Lower the shaping rate, use a less demanding mode if documented, or disable SQM when the speed loss outweighs the latency benefit. Upgrading hardware is a separate decision and does not guarantee lower latency unless the existing router is the bottleneck.

The router becomes unstable

Disable the new rule or restore the previous configuration, then reboot if the interface requires it. Reapply one change at a time. Keep a copy of the working settings, and check firmware notes for known incompatibilities before trying another mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose between router features

Need Prefer What to verify
One console or computer must win contention Device priority That the device identity remains stable and all of its traffic being prioritized is acceptable
Several users share calling or gaming traffic Activity or application priority, or a balancing preset Whether the router recognizes the applications and allows multiple activities
Lag appears only while a link is saturated SQM, if supported Router CPU capacity, supported operating mode, and expected throughput with shaping
The router offers only a simple preset The closest documented scenario mode Which devices and traffic classes the preset actually changes
No control works in the current installation A gateway-capable configuration or hardware that supports the needed feature Exact model and firmware support; do not assume a purchase alone fixes congestion

Keep the configuration reliable

  • Re-test after firmware updates, service-plan changes, or a move from router mode to access-point mode.
  • Review priority assignments when household devices are replaced or their privacy settings create new network identities.
  • Keep the high-priority list short and tied to a real responsiveness requirement.
  • Use Ethernet for the most latency-sensitive device when practical; QoS cannot repair radio interference or poor signal quality.
  • Document the chosen rates, modes, and devices so you can restore them after a factory reset.

The practical goal is not the highest speed-test score. It is stable call audio and video, and predictable game response, while ordinary household traffic continues to work. Start with the simplest documented priority control, validate it under load, and move to SQM only when queueing is the problem and the router can handle the processing cost.
