Call of Duty’s voice-chat menus are title- and platform-specific. The documented steps below apply to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PC with a keyboard and mouse; Warzone Mobile places its voice controls in the Social menu instead. In Black Ops Cold War, open Settings > Audio, enable Voice Chat, select Game Chat or Party Chat, choose Push to Talk under Microphone Activation Mode, and assign a key under Push to Talk (Voice Chat). The PC guide lists V as the default key: hold it while speaking.
First, identify your Call of Duty version and platform
There is no single verified voice-settings path for every Call of Duty release. Menu names, keybinds and even the location of voice options can change between games and between PC, console and mobile editions. The detailed Audio-menu instructions in this guide come from Activision documentation for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The mobile section is based on the separate Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile documentation.
If you are playing a different Call of Duty game, use these instructions as a checklist of the settings to look for, not as a promise that every label or location is identical. Open the game’s own Settings or Options menus and read the descriptions beside each voice control.
What push-to-talk does
Push-to-talk (PTT) keeps your microphone inactive until you hold a configured key. In the documented Black Ops Cold War PC setup, the default is V: “V – Push to Talk: Press and hold this key to activate your microphone in-game,” according to the official PC guide by James Mattone, published November 12, 2020.

When you release the key, the game stops transmitting. This prevents keyboard noise, conversations in the room and background sounds from being sent to teammates. It does require you to remember to hold the key whenever you speak.
Open Mic is the alternative in that version. The PC guide describes it as activating the microphone whenever the incoming sound exceeds a set volume threshold. You can speak without holding a key, but sounds above the threshold are transmitted unless you adjust sensitivity or mute the microphone.
Black Ops Cold War on PC: set up push-to-talk
These steps are specifically for the keyboard-and-mouse controls documented for Black Ops Cold War.

- Select Audio.
- Set Voice Chat to Enabled.
- Find Voice & Text Chat Channel and select either Game Chat or Party Chat.
- Set Microphone Activation Mode to Push to Talk.
- Choose Push to Talk (Voice Chat) and assign the key you want to hold while speaking. The official guide lists V as the default.
- Apply or leave the menu after confirming the changes, then join a voice-enabled match or party and hold the assigned key while speaking.
If V does nothing, the binding may have been changed or may conflict with another action. Open Settings > Keyboard and Mouse, find the voice-chat binding, and check which key is actually assigned. Test the displayed key rather than assuming the default is still active.

Choose the correct voice channel

The documented Black Ops Cold War support page presents Game Chat and Party Chat as the available choices under Voice & Text Chat Channel. If your title uses different channel names, follow that game’s on-screen descriptions.
Adjust the three separate voice controls
Black Ops Cold War exposes three controls that affect different parts of communication. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

The support documentation supplies control ranges for this version. Use the range shown in your own Audio menu rather than carrying a number from another Call of Duty release into a different game.

- Start with Voice Chat enabled and select the channel you intend to use.
- Keep Microphone Activation Mode on Push to Talk while checking that your keybind works. This removes the open-mic threshold as a possible cause of silence.
- Enter a party or match in which you can safely test. Hold the assigned PTT key and speak at a normal distance from the microphone.
- Ask a teammate whether your level is too quiet, too loud or distorted. Adjust Microphone Volume in small increments.
- Adjust Voice Chat Volume separately while listening to other players. This does not change the level of your own transmission.
- If you choose Open Mic, speak normally and adjust Open Microphone Sensitivity until speech activates reliably without transmitting ordinary room noise.
Push-to-talk versus Open Mic

Neither mode is universally better. PTT is usually easier for a noisy room or a shared living space. Open Mic can be more convenient when you need both hands for controls and have a quiet environment. The official Black Ops Cold War guide specifically describes Open Mic as threshold-based; it does not describe it as voice-activity detection that perfectly distinguishes speech from every other sound.

Change the PTT key or repair a keybind
Assign a different key
Open the game’s Keyboard and Mouse settings and locate the action named Push to Talk (Voice Chat). Select it, press the key you want to use, and confirm the new binding. Choose a key that you can hold without interfering with movement, aiming or a frequently used tactical action.
After changing the binding, return to Audio and make sure Microphone Activation Mode is still set to Push to Talk. A key assignment alone does not enable PTT if the activation mode remains Open Mic or another option.
When the default V key fails
- Check Keyboard and Mouse to see whether V is still assigned to Push to Talk.
- Confirm that Voice Chat is enabled in Settings > Audio.
- Verify that you are holding the key rather than tapping it; the documented behavior requires pressing and holding.
- Check that you selected the channel you intend to use, because transmitting to a different channel can look like a microphone failure.
- Inspect the operating system’s selected input device and its microphone permission if the game shows no input at all. The exact operating-system path depends on Windows version and hardware, so use the device’s current sound settings.
Console players: do not copy the PC key instruction
The documented V key applies to the Black Ops Cold War keyboard-and-mouse guide. A controller player cannot use that PC key instruction as a verified console procedure. Look in the console version’s Audio and controller settings for its own Microphone Activation Mode and voice-chat binding labels. The support documentation cautions that controls can vary by game and directs players to the descriptions provided in-game.

The same caution applies to later Call of Duty releases on PC. Even if a newer title has a setting named Push to Talk, its default key, menu location or available channel options may differ.

Warzone Mobile voice settings
Warzone Mobile uses a different documented layout. Its voice options are described in the Social menu rather than the Black Ops Cold War PC Audio path. Do not look for the mobile controls by following the PC instructions above.
- The mobile guide includes a setting for party-only game voice, which limits game voice communication to your party.
- It provides an option to be muted by default when joining a channel, useful if you do not want to transmit immediately after entering voice chat.
- The guide states that matches start with push-to-talk as the default in the mobile experience.
- Proximity chat controls are also documented for mobile, allowing you to manage voice interactions based on nearby players.
Because these are mobile-specific options, their presence does not establish that the same controls exist on console or PC. If a mobile label has changed in a later update, use the current Social-menu description shown by the game.

You can hear others, but they cannot hear you
- In Settings > Audio, verify that Voice Chat is enabled.
- Confirm that Microphone Activation Mode is Push to Talk if you expect a key press to transmit.
- Check the displayed Push to Talk (Voice Chat) binding under Keyboard and Mouse. Do not assume it is V.
- Hold the binding while speaking and watch for the game’s microphone activity indicator, if your title provides one.
- Check the selected microphone in the operating system and make sure the game has permission to use it.
Others hear constant noise
- Switch to Push to Talk so the microphone is active only while the key is held.
- If you prefer Open Mic, increase Open Microphone Sensitivity gradually so quieter background sounds remain below the threshold.
- Move the microphone away from speakers and reduce fan, keyboard or controller noise where possible.
Teammates are too quiet
Raise Voice Chat Volume, which controls the level of other players’ transmissions. Do not raise Microphone Volume for this symptom; that control affects how loudly other players receive you.

Adjust Microphone Volume rather than Voice Chat Volume. Make small changes and test after each one. If distortion persists at a moderate setting, inspect the microphone’s operating-system level, physical connection and mute switch.

You transmit to the wrong people
Check Voice & Text Chat Channel. Select Party Chat for party-only communication or Game Chat when you need the game channel. On Warzone Mobile, use the Social-menu party-only and proximity options documented for that edition.
Microphone and headset requirements
A working microphone is required to transmit voice. It may be a headset microphone, a USB microphone or another input device recognized by your platform. The official settings documentation describes microphone activation and volume controls but does not require or endorse a particular headset model. If you do not already have a usable microphone, choose any compatible device that your platform lists as an input and select it in the platform’s audio settings.
Before changing in-game levels, confirm that the microphone is not physically muted and that the correct input is selected. A game cannot transmit from a device that the operating system or mobile device has disabled.
Quick checklist before your next match
- Confirm the exact Call of Duty title and platform.
- Enable Voice Chat in the title’s current audio or social menu.
- Choose the intended channel: Game Chat, Party Chat or the mobile equivalent.
- For Black Ops Cold War PC, set Microphone Activation Mode > Push to Talk and verify the key under Keyboard and Mouse.
- For Open Mic, set the activation threshold so speech triggers without constant background transmission.
- Balance Voice Chat Volume for incoming voices and Microphone Volume for your outgoing level.
- On Warzone Mobile, open Social and review party-only voice, default mute, push-to-talk and proximity-chat controls.
- Test the microphone in a party or low-risk match before relying on it for coordinated play.
What is verified—and what is not
The Black Ops Cold War support page and PC guide verify the Audio-menu controls, Game Chat and Party Chat choices, the separate volume and sensitivity settings, the V default for PC push-to-talk, and the Open Mic threshold behavior for that version. The Warzone Mobile guide verifies the Social-menu voice options described above.
Those sources do not establish one universal path for every current Call of Duty game, nor do they certify that later releases retain the same labels, defaults or ranges. When your game’s menu differs, follow its current on-screen descriptions or title-specific official documentation instead of forcing the Black Ops Cold War or Warzone Mobile procedure to fit.
