To use push-to-talk (PTT), choose Push to Talk in your voice app, assign a key, and test it in the place you plan to talk. In Discord’s browser version, the key works only while the browser is focused; system-wide PTT requires Discord’s desktop app. On Linux, global key capture can depend on the desktop session, and a community workaround is available for some setups.
What push-to-talk does
Push-to-talk sends microphone audio only while you press and hold its assigned key. Releasing the key stops transmission, though an app’s release-delay setting can let audio continue briefly after key-up. Discord describes this behavior in its Voice Input Modes 101 guide.
PTT depends on two settings working together: the app must use Push to Talk as its input mode, and the intended key must be assigned. A microphone that works in an app does not prove that its keybind will work when another window is active.

Set up push-to-talk in Discord desktop
- Open User Settings, then select Voice & Video.
- Under Input Mode, choose Push to Talk.
- Record the desired shortcut and check that it appears in the shortcut field.
- If speech is cut off immediately after you release the key, adjust Push to Talk Release Delay.
- Test a press and release in the app and in the game or other context where you intend to talk.
Choose a key that the game or desktop environment does not already use. If two actions share a key, the game may consume it before Discord can respond. Discord also documents desktop keybind options in its keyboard shortcuts and custom keybinds guide.

Browser focus is a limitation
Discord says browser PTT works only while the browser window is focused. If you need the key to work while a game or another app is in front, use the Discord desktop app; changing the key alone does not remove the browser focus limitation.
Set up push-to-talk in Steam
- In Steam, open Friends & Chat, open the settings gear, and go to Voice.
- Select the intended microphone and run Start Microphone Test to confirm Steam receives audio.
- Set Voice Transmission Type to Push to Talk.
- Check the key shown beside Push-to-talk hotkey assigned as, then test it while holding and releasing the key.
Steam’s microphone troubleshooting guide recommends checking the input device, voice mode, and hotkey. Steamworks documentation describes the underlying PTT model for developers: recording starts when the user presses the key and stops when the user releases it. That implementation description is not a player-facing setup guide.

Why Discord global PTT can fail on Linux
When a key works with Discord focused but not while another window is active, the issue may be global key capture rather than the microphone. Linux desktop session and input handling matter, and there is no established official, distribution-independent Discord fix that applies across desktop environments and Wayland sessions.
The community project Discord-PTT-Linux describes one approach: run Discord in X11 mode, configure a PTT binding, and use a helper daemon to watch for the key. Its README includes example launch and package commands for Ubuntu/Debian, Fedora, and Arch. This is project-maintained guidance, not an official Discord feature or a universal solution. Confirm that its instructions match your distribution, session, and Discord client before using them; do not assume the same steps work on Wayland.

If the project approach does not work, identify your distribution, desktop environment, session type (X11 or Wayland), and Discord package/client. Also check whether PTT works while Discord itself is focused. Those details help distinguish an app configuration problem from a session-level global-key limitation.

- Check the physical connection. Make sure the microphone is plugged in. For a USB microphone, try another port and bypass a hub.
- Check the operating system input. Confirm that the intended microphone is selected and that its input level is usable.
- Test inside the voice app. Use the app’s microphone test before testing in a game. If the app cannot receive audio, resolve device selection or connection issues first.
- Verify PTT settings. Confirm Push to Talk is selected, the intended microphone is active, and the exact assigned key is shown.
- Pin down where it fails. Test with the voice app focused, with the game focused, and—if relevant—on another server. If the key works only in the app window, focus or global-key handling is a likely distinction; if it fails only in one game or server, investigate that context.
- Separate key problems from audio quality. For distorted sound or echo, inspect the microphone connection and position. Headphones or earphones can reduce feedback from speakers; testing another microphone can help isolate persistent poor quality. These audio steps do not, by themselves, fix a global hotkey that is not captured.
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends narrowing whether the fault is hardware or software and whether it occurs everywhere or only in a particular situation. Following that order avoids replacing audio hardware when the actual failure is a keybind or focus limitation.
