The setup depends on your controller. A standard DualSense lets you remap buttons globally and change trigger-effect strength. DualSense Edge adds named profiles, profile shortcuts, per-profile trigger deadzones, vibration, and trigger-effect controls. Access controller uses a separate Profile Library with controller slots.

Use the section for your controller below; the menu paths are different, and an Edge profile cannot be configured through the standard DualSense menu.

Choose the right PS5 controller workflow

Controller Where to configure it What you can save or change How switching works
Standard DualSense Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller System-wide button replacements; general trigger-effect intensity Changes apply as the controller’s current system settings; there is no Edge-style named profile library documented for this controller
DualSense Edge Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles Named profiles containing button assignments, stick sensitivity/deadzone, trigger deadzone, vibration intensity, and trigger-effect intensity Assign profiles to Fn shortcuts and switch while playing
Access controller Settings > Accessories > Access controller > Profile Library Orientation, button assignments, stick sensitivity/deadzone, and other controller-specific settings Assign favorites to controller slots and cycle with the profile button

Basic remapping does not require buying a premium controller. The standard DualSense covers system-level assignments and trigger-effect strength. Choose DualSense Edge when you need several saved layouts or rapid switching during a game. Access controller is designed around its own accessibility-oriented controls and slot system.

Think of the three systems as separate configuration models. DualSense changes are global controller settings, Edge stores a group of settings under a named profile, and Access controller stores profiles in a library that is connected to physical controller slots. Choosing the wrong menu is the most common setup mistake.

Remap buttons on a standard DualSense

Standard DualSense remapping is a console accessibility setting rather than a collection of named layouts. It changes what the PS5 sends when you press a physical button.

Open Custom Button Assignments

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Controllers.
  4. Open Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller.
  5. Select the physical button you want to change.
  6. Choose the function that should replace it.
  7. Select Apply to save the assignment.

The replacement affects the system-level controller mapping. If a particular game also remaps buttons internally, that game can interpret the same input differently. When a result is not what you expect, inspect the game’s own controller or accessibility menu for a second assignment.

What this method does not provide

  • It does not create named profiles that you can assign to shortcut buttons.
  • It does not provide Edge’s per-profile trigger deadzone or per-profile vibration controls.
  • It is not a way to make one button perform multiple functions at once; the setting replaces the button’s function.

For a single layout change that should remain active across games, this system menu is the shortest route. If you regularly alternate between layouts, an Edge profile library is the more suitable workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After applying a remap, test it on the PS5 home screen as well as in a game. This separates a console-level assignment from a game’s own mapping and helps identify which layer is responsible if an action is duplicated or missing.

Adjust trigger-effect strength on a standard DualSense

Trigger-effect intensity controls how strongly the adaptive resistance effect pushes back on L2 and R2. It does not change the point at which a game begins reading trigger input.

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose Controller (General).
  4. Open Trigger Effect Intensity.
  5. Select the strength you want from the available setting.

This is a general controller setting for the standard DualSense. The official instructions establish the system-level intensity control, not an Edge-style library of separate saved profiles for this controller.

If you want less physical resistance but still want the game to recognize the full trigger travel, lower this intensity setting rather than changing a deadzone. A standard DualSense does not expose the Edge trigger-deadzone controls in the documented menu.

Create a DualSense Edge custom profile

DualSense Edge profiles package several settings under a name. A profile can hold a competitive layout, an accessibility layout, or a relaxed setting with less resistance, and you can keep those configurations separate.

Make a profile

  1. Open Settings > Accessories.
  2. Select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
  3. Choose Custom Profiles.
  4. Select Create Custom Profile.
  5. Enter a name and select OK.
  6. Choose a setting to customize. The documented categories are Button Assignments, Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone, Trigger Deadzone, Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity.

A newly created profile appears in Unassigned Profiles until you attach it to a shortcut. You can still edit it there; assigning a shortcut is what makes quick in-game selection possible.

Name profiles for their purpose rather than for the game alone, such as “low resistance,” “left-handed,” or “racing.” That makes the shortcut easier to identify later if you reuse the same layout in several games.

Assign a profile to a shortcut

  1. In Custom Profiles, find the profile under Unassigned Profiles.
  2. Select Assign beside the profile.
  3. Choose one of the available action-button shortcuts.

The default profile is selected with Fn + triangle. That shortcut is reserved and cannot be changed. Your created profiles can use the other three action-button combinations. To switch during play, hold Fn and press the action button assigned to the profile.

Assignment and creation are separate steps. A profile left in Unassigned Profiles remains available for editing but will not be selected by an Fn shortcut until you assign it.

Edit an existing profile

  1. Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
  2. Select the profile you want to change.
  3. Choose the setting category.
  4. Adjust the values, test them where the interface offers a playtest, and save the change.

Because each value belongs to the selected profile, changing trigger resistance or stick behavior here does not automatically alter your other profiles. Check the profile name before editing so a change intended for one layout is not saved to another.

Remap DualSense Edge buttons

  1. Open the Edge profile you want to edit.
  2. Choose Customize Button Assignments.
  3. Select a button on the controller diagram or list.
  4. Choose its replacement function.
  5. Select Apply.

Edge remapping has documented restrictions:

  • The Fn button cannot be reassigned.
  • Circle and cross must always be assigned.
  • L2 and R2 can be swapped with each other.
  • Another button cannot take an L2 or R2 trigger function.
  • You cannot assign multiple functions to L2 or R2.

These rules prevent a profile from removing the two primary confirm/cancel inputs or creating ambiguous trigger assignments. If an assignment appears unavailable, it is usually one of these profile limits rather than a failed save.

Remapping is profile-specific. Editing the button layout in one Edge profile does not rewrite the assignments in your other profiles, which is why it is useful to create a separate profile before experimenting with an unfamiliar layout.

Understand Edge trigger deadzone versus trigger-effect intensity

These controls affect different parts of the trigger experience. Confusing them is the most common reason a change seems ineffective.

  • Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone
  • Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Control What it changes Typical reason to adjust it
Trigger deadzone The input range: how far L2 or R2 must be pressed before the game registers input and where the input reaches its maximum Compensate for unwanted travel, make a trigger register earlier, or limit the usable range
Trigger Effect Intensity The strength of the adaptive trigger resistance effect Reduce fatigue or distraction, or retain stronger tactile feedback

Set a trigger deadzone

  1. Open the Edge profile you want to change.
  2. Select Trigger Deadzone.
  3. Adjust the start and maximum points for L2 and R2.
  4. Use the on-screen playtest to check the result.
  5. If you want identical behavior, choose the option to apply the same settings to the left and right triggers.
  6. Save the profile.

PlayStation’s example uses a range from 30 to 70. Pressing deeper than 30 begins registering; 70 is the maximum point. Presses shallower than 30 or deeper than 70 do not register within that configured range. The numbers describe the configured input window, not the percentage of trigger-effect force.

The start point and maximum point serve different purposes. Raising the start point requires a deeper press before input begins, while changing the maximum point changes where the controller reaches full input. Use the playtest after each adjustment instead of changing both ends repeatedly without checking the result.

Set Edge trigger-effect intensity

  1. Open the relevant Edge custom profile.
  2. Select Trigger Effect Intensity.
  3. Choose the desired strength.
  4. Save the profile.

Unlike the standard DualSense’s general intensity setting, Edge stores this choice in the profile. You can therefore keep stronger effects in one profile and lighter effects in another without rebuilding the rest of the layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust vibration separately

Vibration Intensity is another Edge profile category. It controls vibration strength and is independent of both trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity. Set it when you want to reduce controller vibration without changing trigger resistance or input registration.

A useful test order is to set the input range first, then trigger-effect intensity, and finally vibration. That order makes it clear whether a gameplay response changed because of input registration or only because the controller feels different in your hands.

Set up Access controller profiles

Access controller has a separate profile system and should not be treated as a DualSense Edge variant. Its profiles are managed through a library and assigned to controller slots.

Create or edit a profile

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose Access controller.
  4. Open Profile Library.
  5. Create a profile or select an existing profile to edit.
  6. Configure the controller orientation and button assignments.
  7. Adjust stick sensitivity or deadzone where needed.
  8. Save the profile.

Assign profiles to slots

  1. In Profile Library, choose the profile you want available on the controller.
  2. Assign it to a controller slot.
  3. Repeat for other profiles you want to reach quickly.
  4. Use the controller’s profile button to cycle through the assigned profiles.

PlayStation states that the PS5 can store up to 30 custom Access controller profiles, with up to three favorites assigned to controller slots. Those limits apply to the Access controller workflow, not to DualSense Edge shortcut assignments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Saving a profile and assigning a profile to a slot are different operations here as well. A profile can exist in the library without appearing in the cycle until it is assigned to a slot. If a profile seems to have disappeared, check the library first, then check the slot assignments.

Standard DualSense, Edge, or Access controller?

Your requirement Best fit Why
Swap one or two buttons and leave the change active Standard DualSense Custom Button Assignments handles system-level remapping without creating profiles
Change trigger resistance only Standard DualSense Trigger Effect Intensity is available under Controller (General)
Keep several layouts and switch while playing DualSense Edge Named profiles can be assigned to Fn shortcuts
Fine-tune trigger registration separately from resistance DualSense Edge Profiles include Trigger Deadzone and Trigger Effect Intensity as separate controls
Configure orientation and accessibility-focused layouts with slots Access controller Its Profile Library and controller-slot system are built for that controller

Do not purchase an Edge solely for basic remapping: the standard DualSense already provides that function. Edge becomes useful when saved layouts, quick switching, or profile-specific stick and trigger controls matter. Access controller is the focused choice when its physical configuration and accessibility profile system match your needs. No purchase is required to use the standard DualSense remapping and general trigger-intensity settings.

There is no single “best” profile system. If you rarely change controls, a global DualSense assignment has fewer steps. If you switch between a normal layout and a low-resistance or specialized layout during play, Edge shortcuts reduce repeated trips to Settings. If your setup depends on orientation and controller slots, use Access controller’s Profile Library rather than trying to reproduce it with an Edge profile.

Fix remapping and profile problems

A remapped button still performs the old action

  • Confirm that you selected Apply after choosing the replacement.
  • Check whether the game has its own controller mapping that overrides or duplicates the PS5 assignment.
  • On Edge, verify that the intended profile is active rather than the default profile.
  • Test the button in another game or on the home screen to determine whether the conflict is system-wide or game-specific.

An Edge shortcut selects the wrong layout

  • Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
  • Check which profile is assigned to each action-button shortcut.
  • Remember that Fn + triangle always selects the default profile.
  • Hold Fn while pressing the assigned action button; pressing the action button alone will not switch profiles.
  • Make sure the profile was assigned rather than left under Unassigned Profiles.

The trigger registers too early or too late

Change Trigger Deadzone, not Trigger Effect Intensity. The deadzone defines the input window; effect intensity changes only the physical resistance sensation. On Edge, use the trigger playtest after changing the start and maximum points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trigger feels different but gameplay input did not change

You probably changed effect intensity rather than deadzone. Reduce or increase Trigger Effect Intensity for the tactile effect, and use Trigger Deadzone when the game’s registered input point is the issue.

An Access controller profile is missing from the cycle

Open Profile Library and confirm that the profile is assigned to one of the controller’s slots. Creating a profile does not automatically make it part of the slot cycle.

A setting changed in the wrong profile

Return to Custom Profiles, read the selected profile name, and edit that profile directly. Edge stores button, stick, trigger, vibration, and effect settings with the selected profile, so changing one profile does not repair another profile that has different values.

Manage DualSense Edge profiles on a Windows PC

PlayStation also supports managing DualSense Edge profiles with the PlayStation Accessories app on Windows. The PC workflow can create, edit, and switch profiles and save button and stick settings. PlayStation’s PC instructions cover the current connection and app requirements, so follow those instructions for the version of Windows and app available to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Profiles saved through the supported PC workflow can be used on another supported device. If a setting does not appear on the PC, verify that the Edge is connected as described by PlayStation and that the app recognizes the controller before editing. The PC app is an additional management route, not a requirement for creating or switching profiles on a PS5.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify whether you have a standard DualSense, DualSense Edge, or Access controller.
  • For a standard DualSense, use Accessibility for button assignments and Accessories > Controller (General) for trigger-effect strength.
  • For Edge, create a named profile before changing settings you may want to preserve.
  • Assign Edge profiles to shortcuts only after you have tested the layout.
  • Keep trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity conceptually separate.
  • Check game-specific controller settings when a system remap conflicts with in-game assignments.
  • For Access controller, assign profiles to slots so they appear when you cycle with the profile button.
  • Use the Edge trigger playtest to verify both the start and maximum points after changing a deadzone.
  • Apply changes and test one control at a time so you can identify which setting produced the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remap buttons on a PS5 standard DualSense?

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller. Select the physical button, choose its replacement function, and select Apply. This is a system-level mapping, not a named profile library.

Can a standard DualSense save several button profiles?

The documented standard-DualSense settings provide global custom button assignments and a general trigger-effect setting, but not the named, shortcut-assigned profile library available on DualSense Edge. For rapid switching among saved layouts, Edge is the appropriate workflow.

How do I make a PS5 controller trigger effect weaker?

On a standard DualSense, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity and choose a lower strength. On DualSense Edge, open the relevant custom profile and change Trigger Effect Intensity so the value is stored with that profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity?

Trigger deadzone changes the input range: it determines when L2 or R2 starts registering and where it reaches maximum input. Trigger-effect intensity changes only the strength of the adaptive resistance sensation. A deadzone change can alter gameplay input; an intensity change changes how the press feels.

How do I switch DualSense Edge profiles while playing?

Assign a created profile under Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles, then hold Fn and press its assigned action button. Fn + triangle always selects the default profile and cannot be reassigned; created profiles use the other three action-button shortcuts.

Why can’t I assign a particular button on DualSense Edge?

Edge has fixed restrictions: Fn cannot be reassigned; circle and cross must remain assigned; L2 and R2 may be swapped with each other but another button cannot take either trigger function; and multiple functions cannot be assigned to L2 or R2.

How many Access controller profiles can I save?

PlayStation says the PS5 can store up to 30 custom Access controller profiles. Up to three favorites can be assigned to controller slots, and the controller’s profile button cycles through those assigned profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my remap work in one game but not another?

A game may have its own controller or accessibility mapping that conflicts with the PS5 assignment. Check the game’s settings, confirm the intended Edge profile is active if you use Edge, and test the physical button on the PS5 home screen to isolate the conflict.

Do I need a DualSense Edge for basic button remapping?

No. A standard DualSense supports system-level button assignments and general trigger-effect intensity. Edge is an optional fit when you need named profiles, quick switching, per-profile trigger deadzones, or other profile-specific controls.

The Bottom Line

Use Accessibility > Controllers for standard DualSense button remapping and Accessories > Controller (General) for its trigger-effect strength. Use DualSense Edge Custom Profiles when you need saved layouts, Fn shortcuts, trigger deadzones, vibration, or per-profile effect intensity. Use Access controller’s Profile Library and slots for its orientation and accessibility-focused setup. If a remap behaves unexpectedly, check both the active profile and the game’s own controller settings.
