Start with the audience, then control contact, moderation, and escalation on each account. This sequence works across major services, although the labels and available options vary by app version, region, age, and account type.
- Review visibility: check who can see your profile, posts, stories, videos, and individual-post audiences.
- Limit interaction: choose who may follow, message, comment, tag, or mention you.
- Moderate content: enable word filters, link controls, comment review, or hidden-term settings.
- Choose an intervention: mute, restrict, block, or report according to the behavior and the platform.
- Recheck regularly: updates can move controls, and a setting on one post or video may not change older content.
These controls reduce exposure and contact; they cannot guarantee that nobody screenshots, copies, downloads, or reshares something, and they cannot remove a post published on another person’s profile.
Build a privacy baseline before dealing with individual accounts
Privacy settings work in layers. Account-level defaults determine the usual audience, while an individual post, video, story, or live stream may have its own audience selector. Check both before assuming a private-looking profile makes every item private.

Use the narrowest audience that fits the purpose. A public account or post can be viewed beyond your approved followers or friends. A private account generally requires approval before someone can follow, but it does not erase content that other people already copied or posted elsewhere. On services that offer per-post choices, inspect the audience control each time you publish something sensitive.

2. Separate visibility from interaction
Someone may be able to view a post without being allowed to comment, send a direct message, tag you, or mention your username. Configure each of those channels independently. A private audience does not automatically stop every form of contact from people already connected to you.
3. Add moderation before you need it
Word filters, blocked-link rules, comment review, and hidden-term tools can catch common abuse or spam. They are not perfect: a filter may miss altered spellings, hold an innocent comment, or hide content that you wanted to see. Check the review queue when a service provides one.
4. Match the response to the behavior
Mute is usually the least visible response and primarily changes what you see. Restrict adds a layer of distance while preserving a connection on services that support it. Block cuts off more interaction, but its visibility effect differs by platform. Report asks the service to assess abuse or a policy violation; it does not promise a particular decision or response time.

Facebook and Instagram: control audiences, comments, tags, and contact
Instagram: approve followers and use Restrict for a quieter boundary
- Open Instagram’s privacy settings and review whether the account is public or requires follower approval. Remove followers you no longer want connected if the current app offers that option.
- When creating a post, story, reel, or other item, open its audience control rather than relying only on the account default.
- Review comment controls and enable hidden-word filtering for terms you do not want displayed. Use the available controls for mentions, tags, and messages to reduce unsolicited contact.
- For a person whose behavior is irritating or escalating but does not yet justify a complete cutoff, choose Restrict. Meta’s Safety Center explains: “On Instagram, if you restrict someone, they won’t be able to see when you’re online or if you’ve read their messages. Their new comments on your posts will only be visible to them.” You can then decide whether to review those comments.
- Use block when you want a stronger separation, and report conduct that violates the service’s rules. Save evidence before removing it if you may need to describe a pattern of abuse.
Restrict is not the same as block: it preserves more of the connection while reducing status visibility and the audience for new comments. Check the current wording in your app because Instagram can change where the control appears.

Facebook: use audience selection plus tag and timeline review
- Open Facebook’s privacy or audience settings and review who can see profile details and new posts. Use the audience selector on an individual post when its audience should differ from your default.
- Turn on tag review so a post that tags you requires your approval before it appears on your profile, and use timeline review to review tagged activity before it is shown there.
- Choose the available comment-audience settings for your posts. Add words to the hidden-words list when recurring insults, slurs, or spam terms are the problem.
- Mute, block, or report an account from the relevant post, profile, or message. Blocking is a stronger intervention than simply hiding a post from your own feed.
Review controls affect how a tagged item appears on your profile; they do not necessarily delete the post from the person who published it. Ask the publisher to remove it or report it when the content itself violates a rule.
TikTok: set privacy separately for the account, each video, comments, and messages
Choose an account and video audience
- Open TikTok’s privacy settings and select the account visibility that fits your needs. TikTok documents three broad post audiences: everyone, friends or followers, and private.
- Before posting a video, open its audience selector. A private account does not automatically make every existing video private, and a public video can have a broader audience than you intended if you do not inspect the per-video setting.
- Consider sharing and download behavior when deciding what to publish. TikTok’s Privacy Centre says: “Depending on your selected privacy settings, your posts may be visible to anyone on or off the platform and can be shared by anyone on or off TikTok whether or not they have a TikTok account.”
Reduce comments and direct messages
- Use the account-level comment controls to set who may comment where TikTok offers that choice.
- For a specific video, open its comment settings and either limit commenters, turn comments off, or enable filters for selected terms. Video-level settings can differ from the account default.
- Review direct-message privacy controls and select the narrowest audience that still lets you communicate with people you trust. TikTok applies age-related restrictions, so some accounts will not see every messaging option.
- When a comment or message crosses into harassment or another policy violation, use TikTok’s reporting flow. Filtering reduces what reaches you but is not a substitute for reporting serious threats or repeated abuse.
X: protect the account when blocking alone is not enough
Control public visibility
X distinguishes a public account from a protected one. If the account is not protected, a blocked account can still view its posts, even though it cannot engage with them. Therefore, blocking a person does not by itself make public posts invisible to that person; protect the account when limiting visibility is the priority.
Use mute, block, and report deliberately
- Use mute when you want to remove an account’s posts from your own view without making the interaction public.
- Use block when you want to prevent the account from engaging with you, then check the protected-account setting if that person must not be able to read your posts.
- Use report for abuse, threats, impersonation, spam, or another rule violation. Keep a record of the post or account details in case the content is deleted before an assessment.
Stop unwanted tags and keywords
Use the photo-tag control to decide who may tag the account. X also lets you mute posts containing selected words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags. Keyword muting changes what appears in your timeline; it does not necessarily stop another person from publishing the material or sending it through a different channel.

Choose how comments are handled
- Open the channel’s comment settings in YouTube Studio. Choose whether comments are allowed, held for review, or disabled where the video and account are eligible for that control.
- Add abusive terms to the blocked-words list and enable link controls to reduce spam and promotional comments.
- For eligible videos, restrict commenting to subscribers and paid members when that narrower participation model suits the channel.
- Use hide user from channel for a persistent harasser. YouTube says the hidden person’s activity is hidden from the channel audience, including comments and live chat, and the person is not notified.
Work the review queue
Held comments remain in YouTube Studio for up to 60 days, according to YouTube Help. Check that queue during moderation rather than assuming a held comment was permanently deleted. Approve legitimate comments, remove abusive ones, or hide a repeat offender from the channel.

Channel-wide blocked words and hidden-user controls can affect many videos, while a setting changed on one video may apply only there. When a comment still appears, check whether the rule was configured at the channel level or only on another video.
How to choose between mute, restrict, block, and report
Mute: reduce what reaches you
Mute is appropriate for unwanted opinions, repetitive posting, or a relationship you do not want to confront. It is primarily a viewing control, so it should not be treated as a safety barrier when the person is contacting you elsewhere.
Restrict: create distance without a visible cutoff
Restriction is platform-specific. Instagram’s documented behavior hides your online and read status from the restricted person and makes that person’s new comments visible only to them unless you choose to review them. Other services may use a similar label for a different result, so read the confirmation screen before relying on it.

Blocking generally prevents the blocked account from interacting with you, but it does not have one universal effect on what the person can see. X’s documented exception is especially important: a blocked account can still view posts from an unprotected account.

Report: escalate a rule violation
Report threats, targeted abuse, impersonation, non-consensual intimate material, or other conduct covered by the service’s rules. Reporting sends the material for assessment; the official materials do not guarantee a specific enforcement result or a response deadline. If you are in immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services rather than relying only on an in-app report.

“I made my account private, but an unwanted person still sees something.”
Check whether the item was posted before the privacy change, whether it was reshared by another account, or whether the person is an approved follower or friend. Review the individual post or video audience instead of relying on the account default.
“A blocked person can still read my posts.”
On X, this is expected when the account is public. Protect the account if the goal is to limit viewing, and review followers who should no longer have access.

“A filter hides too much or misses obvious abuse.”
Filters can hold, hide, or miss content. Adjust the terms, inspect the moderation queue, and combine filtering with restricting, blocking, or reporting when a person is persistent. Avoid relying on one spelling or one keyword when the same abuse appears in altered forms.
“The control I need is missing.”
Check the account type, age eligibility, region, and current app version. TikTok explicitly applies age-related limits to direct messages, and YouTube comment restrictions are available only for eligible videos. Labels can also move after an app update.
Keep the settings effective
- Review account defaults and individual-post audiences after major app updates.
- Remove old followers, friends, or approved accounts that no longer need access.
- Refresh hidden-word lists as new spam or harassment terms appear.
- Check held-comment queues before their retention period expires; YouTube says held comments can remain for up to 60 days.
- Keep screenshots, URLs, usernames, and timestamps for serious or repeated abuse before blocking or deleting material.
- Tell trusted contacts how to reach you through a safer channel if you reduce direct messages.
The strongest practical setup is layered: narrow the audience, limit each interaction type, moderate predictable terms, use the least disruptive intervention that works, and escalate persistent violations through the platform’s reporting process.
