For most Linux deployments, PostgreSQL clustering means a highly available primary–standby design, not a transparent multi-writer database. One server accepts writes, one or more standbys continuously receive and replay WAL (write-ahead log), and a failover procedure promotes a standby when the primary is unavailable. A reliable implementation also needs client routing, fencing, monitoring, independent backups, and a rehearsed rejoin process.
The safest way to build it is to define your recovery objectives first, install matching PostgreSQL major versions, configure streaming replication, initialize a standby with pg_basebackup, then choose either a documented manual promotion workflow or an orchestrator such as Patroni or pg_auto_failover. Test the entire failure and recovery path before calling the cluster highly available.
What PostgreSQL clustering on Linux actually provides
PostgreSQL does not turn several servers into a single, automatically consistent write pool. Keeping read/write state synchronized across independent servers is difficult, so the normal high-availability pattern is a primary plus standby servers. The primary handles writes; standbys receive WAL through continuous archiving or streaming replication and can be promoted if the primary fails.
This design can reduce downtime and, when read-only connections are deliberately routed, provide read capacity. It does not by itself provide zero data loss, automatic client redirection, protection from accidental deletion, or a substitute for backups. Those properties come from replication mode, a failover controller, a routing layer, and operational procedures.

Core components
- Primary: the current read/write PostgreSQL instance.
- Standby: a server that receives and replays WAL; it may be eligible for promotion.
- WAL transport: asynchronous or synchronous streaming replication, optionally supplemented by archived WAL.
- Promotion control: a human-run procedure or an orchestrator that selects and promotes a surviving member.
- Stable endpoint: HAProxy, a load balancer, service discovery, or another routing layer that points applications at the current writer.
- Fencing and rejoin: a way to stop the old primary and safely rebuild it as a standby after failover.
- Monitoring and backups: lag, slot health, disk capacity, quorum, routing, and point-in-time recovery must be observed independently.
Define the failure model before installing anything
Write down the outcome you require for each failure. A single-host outage, a rack failure, a whole availability-zone loss, a network partition, operator error, and a corrupted table are different events and need different controls.
| Decision | Questions to answer | Design consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery point objective | How much acknowledged data may be lost? | Asynchronous replication has a loss window equal to unshipped or unreplayed WAL. Synchronous replication can reduce that window but makes commits depend on standby acknowledgement. |
| Recovery time objective | How quickly must applications write again? | Manual promotion is simpler but depends on an available operator. An orchestrator can act faster, provided quorum and fencing work. |
| Failure domains | Must the service survive a host, rack, or zone failure? | Place members on separate failure domains and ensure the coordination service has its own fault-tolerant quorum. |
| Read scaling | Can the application tolerate replica lag and read-after-write inconsistency? | Expose standbys for carefully selected read-only workloads; keep writes and consistency-sensitive reads on the leader. |
| Maintenance | How will you patch or reboot one member? | Use a controlled switchover, verify the replacement is healthy, and keep a tested rejoin procedure. |
Linux and PostgreSQL prerequisites
- At least two Linux hosts for a basic primary–standby pair. A two-node PostgreSQL pair can fail over, but it has no remaining redundancy while one member is down.
- The same PostgreSQL major version and compatible extensions on every member. pg_auto_failover documentation currently covers PostgreSQL 13 through 18; verify package availability for your chosen distribution.
- Reliable, low-loss network paths between members, the monitor or distributed-consensus store, and application routers.
- Synchronized clocks, restrictive firewalls, encrypted administrative access, and stable DNS or service-discovery names.
- Storage sized for the database, WAL bursts, replication slots, archived WAL, and backups. A slot can retain WAL indefinitely if its consumer is broken, so monitor disk growth.
- Separate operating-system and database administration credentials. Applications should use non-superuser roles.
- A backup repository and a documented point-in-time recovery procedure. Replication copies mistakes and deletes, so it cannot replace independent backups.
Build native streaming replication
The following procedure creates one primary and one standby without an external failover controller. Replace example names, addresses, paths, and values with those appropriate for your Linux distribution and PostgreSQL installation.
1. Install matching packages and identify data directories
Install the same major PostgreSQL version on both hosts. Confirm the server, client, and extension packages match, then record each data directory, service account, and listening address. Do not allow two different service managers to start the same data directory.
2. Create a least-privilege replication role
On the primary, create a dedicated role with only the replication capability and a strong secret. Keep this credential separate from application and administrative credentials.
CREATE ROLE repl_user WITH REPLICATION LOGIN PASSWORD 'use-a-long-unique-secret';
3. Restrict replication connections in pg_hba.conf
Add a rule that permits the replication role only from the standby address or subnet. Use the narrowest CIDR range possible and prefer certificate or SCRAM authentication according to your security policy. Reload PostgreSQL after editing the file and verify that ordinary application roles cannot use the replication entry.
host replication repl_user 10.20.30.42/32 scram-sha-256
4. Configure WAL senders on the primary
Set the primary’s wal_level to replica (or a higher required level), allow enough max_wal_senders for every standby and backup process, and choose max_replication_slots deliberately if you will use slots. Set a stable listen_addresses and reload or restart when a parameter requires it.
A physical replication slot prevents the primary from recycling WAL that a registered standby still needs. That protects a disconnected standby from a missing segment, but it can fill the primary’s disk. Alert on retained WAL and drop abandoned slots only after confirming the consumer is no longer needed.

5. Initialize the standby with pg_basebackup
Stop PostgreSQL on the empty standby data directory, ensure ownership belongs to the PostgreSQL operating-system account, and take a base backup over the replication connection. Include WAL streaming during the backup so the resulting copy has the required WAL history.
pg_basebackup -h primary-db.internal -U repl_user -D /var/lib/postgresql/data -Fp -Xs -P -R
The -R option writes recovery connection settings for supported PostgreSQL versions. If you configure them manually instead, set primary_conninfo with the primary host, port, replication user, and password mechanism, and set primary_slot_name when using a physical slot. Keep secrets out of world-readable files.
6. Start and verify replay
Start the standby and inspect its server log. On the standby, pg_stat_wal_receiver should show a connected receiver. On the primary, pg_stat_replication should show the standby, its state, and send, write, flush, and replay positions. Compare LSN positions and timestamps rather than relying on a green service status alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →SELECT application_name, client_addr, state, sync_state, write_lsn, flush_lsn, replay_lsn FROM pg_stat_replication;
SELECT status, sender_host, slot_name, latest_end_lsn, latest_end_time FROM pg_stat_wal_receiver;
Create a test row on the primary, confirm it appears on the standby, and then remove the test data. If the standby is opened for read-only queries, remember that replay delay means a recent write may not be visible immediately.
Choose asynchronous or synchronous replication
| Mode | Commit behavior | Advantages | Risks and operational cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous (the default for streaming replication) | The primary can acknowledge a commit before a standby receives and replays its WAL. | Lower write latency and continued progress when a standby or network path is unavailable. | If the primary crashes, committed transactions not yet replicated can be lost. The loss window follows replication lag and failover timing. |
| Synchronous | A commit waits for acknowledgement from the configured synchronous standby according to the selected level. | Reduces the chance of losing acknowledged writes and is useful when a zone failure must not discard them. | Writes can block or slow when the required standby is unavailable or the network is unhealthy. Capacity and placement must support the latency budget. |
Do not label a cluster “zero-loss” merely because synchronous mode is enabled. Confirm which standby is synchronous, what acknowledgement level is configured, how a network partition is handled, and whether the application can tolerate write unavailability.
Manual promotion and safe rejoin
Promote only after fencing the old primary
Manual failover starts with a decision that the primary is truly unavailable. A network partition can make both servers appear healthy from different locations. Before promoting, stop or isolate the old primary through the hypervisor, power-control system, operating-system service, or network ACL. This fencing step prevents split-brain writes.
- Declare the incident and record which node is believed to be the old primary.
- Fence the old primary so it cannot accept client or replication connections.
- Check the candidate standby’s replay position, health, and last received WAL.
- Promote the standby with the supported PostgreSQL promotion command or control utility.
- Move the writer endpoint to the promoted server and verify a new write from an application-like client.
- Confirm that connection pools discard old sessions and reconnect to the writer endpoint.
- Preserve logs and WAL metadata for diagnosis; do not immediately erase the old data directory.
Rebuild the former primary as a standby
Never simply restart the old primary and point it at the new leader. Its timeline may diverge and it may still contain writes. Stop it, fence it, archive any evidence needed for recovery, and reinitialize it from the new primary with pg_basebackup or an equivalent supported method. Configure its new upstream connection, start it as a standby, and wait until replay is current before considering redundancy restored.

Automate failover with Patroni
Patroni is a Python-based PostgreSQL high-availability template. It coordinates leader state through a distributed configuration store (DCS), exposes a REST API, and commonly places HAProxy in front of the members so applications use one endpoint. Its documented quick start uses two PostgreSQL members and a DCS such as etcd.
Design the coordination layer first
The DCS must make one authoritative decision during failures. For production, use an odd-number quorum of etcd, ZooKeeper, or Consul nodes and place those nodes across failure domains. A two-member PostgreSQL pair is common, but after one member fails there is temporarily no database redundancy; the DCS still needs enough healthy members to reach quorum.
Configure replication and lag policy
Patroni can manage asynchronous replication with a maximum-lag policy, or synchronous replication when stronger durability is worth the write dependency. Set a lag threshold that reflects the data-loss objective, define health-check timeouts conservatively for your network, and keep the Patroni REST interface restricted to trusted management networks.
Route applications through HAProxy
Configure HAProxy health checks so the writer backend is the Patroni leader endpoint, not merely a server whose PostgreSQL port answers. A separate read-only backend can expose replicas, but only for workloads that tolerate replay lag. Test that a promoted leader becomes the sole writer and that old pooled connections are closed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Automate failover with pg_auto_failover
pg_auto_failover supplies a monitor and a state machine, while pg_autoctl manages PostgreSQL nodes. Current project documentation describes packages for popular Linux distributions and compatibility with PostgreSQL 13 through 18.
Install the documented packages
On Debian or Ubuntu, package names include pg-auto-failover-cli and a versioned PostgreSQL auto-failover package. Use the package version that matches the PostgreSQL major version installed on the host, and follow the distribution-specific repository instructions.
Let pg_autoctl own the service lifecycle
PostgreSQL should be started by pg_autoctl so a rebooted node can rejoin with the correct role. Do not let the distribution’s default PostgreSQL systemd service compete with it. Generate and install the pg_autoctl systemd unit, disable the conflicting default unit, then verify after a reboot that only the intended manager starts the data directory.

Provide monitor and node connectivity
Create the monitor node first, register the primary and standby, and verify that the state machine reports the expected roles. Restrict monitor access, protect credentials, and test what happens when the monitor is unavailable. Automatic promotion is only as dependable as the monitor’s quorum and the fencing method used to isolate an old primary.
Put applications behind a stable writer endpoint
Applications should not hard-code a database member address. Use HAProxy or another routing layer with a stable DNS name or virtual IP. The writer route must select the current leader; a read route may include healthy standbys only when the application’s consistency rules allow it.
- Use short connection and health-check timeouts, but avoid values so aggressive that normal WAL replay or brief packet loss causes flapping.
- Configure connection pools to discard broken sessions and retry idempotent transactions according to application semantics.
- Do not automatically retry non-idempotent writes without an application-level strategy; a timeout does not prove that the server failed to commit.
- Keep migrations, locks, and read-after-write workflows on the writer unless you explicitly account for replica lag.
Multi-zone and multi-datacenter placement
To survive a zone failure, place PostgreSQL members in separate zones and keep the DCS quorum independent of any one zone. Patroni guidance for multi-datacenter designs calls for an odd number of etcd, ZooKeeper, or Consul nodes, database members in separate failure domains, and synchronous mode when the objective is to tolerate a zone failure without losing acknowledged writes.
Cross-zone synchronous replication adds network round-trip latency to commits and can stop writes when the surviving synchronous path is unavailable. If the business objective permits a small loss window, asynchronous replication may provide better write availability. Document this trade-off instead of selecting a mode solely because it sounds safer.
Backups and point-in-time recovery
Replication continuously copies changes, including accidental updates, dropped tables, and application bugs. Maintain independent full backups and archived WAL, store them outside the database hosts, and test restoring to a separate environment. Verify that backups cover the same retention period required by your recovery policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Run a point-in-time recovery exercise separately from a failover exercise. A standby promotion answers “Can service continue after a host failure?” A backup restore answers “Can we recover data that replication faithfully copied but should not have copied?”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitoring that catches a failing cluster
- Replication state and lag: alert on disconnected senders, rising replay delay, and a standby that stops advancing.
- WAL retention: monitor physical-slot retained bytes, archive failures, and filesystem growth before the primary runs out of space.
- Node role: expose whether each member is leader, standby, starting, or failed; alert when two systems claim to be writable.
- DCS or monitor quorum: track member health, leader keys, clock drift, and loss of quorum.
- Routing health: test that the writer endpoint reaches exactly one leader and that read backends are genuinely read-only.
- Rejoin failures: capture base-backup errors, timeline conflicts, authentication failures, and service-manager conflicts.
- Capacity: watch database, WAL, backup, and log volumes as separate resources.
Failure-injection and maintenance checklist
- Record the current leader, standby replay position, slot state, and routing health.
- Stop the primary cleanly during a maintenance rehearsal, then perform the documented promotion.
- Repeat with an abrupt host failure and measure detection, promotion, and client-reconnection times.
- Confirm that fencing prevents the old primary from accepting writes during a simulated network partition.
- Run representative reads and writes through the stable endpoint, including connection-pool recovery.
- Rebuild the old primary as a standby and verify that it catches up without manual timeline hacks.
- Restore a backup to an isolated host and perform point-in-time recovery.
- Document observed recovery times, data-loss exposure, alerts, and the person authorized to promote.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
The standby cannot connect
Check DNS and firewall rules, the primary’s listen_addresses, the replication pg_hba.conf CIDR, role credentials, and whether the primary has available WAL sender slots. Review both server logs; a client-side timeout alone does not identify the cause.

The standby connects but falls behind
Inspect network throughput, disk latency, replay workload, and slot-retained WAL. A busy standby may receive WAL faster than it can replay it. Do not increase retention blindly: first verify that the standby is healthy and that the primary has enough disk headroom.
Promotion succeeds but applications still write to the old server
Check DNS or virtual-IP propagation, HAProxy health checks, connection-pool lifetime, and stale persistent sessions. The database role changed, but client routing does not change automatically unless the routing layer observes and acts on the new leader.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAutomatic failover loops or refuses to promote
Inspect DCS or monitor quorum, clock synchronization, health-check timeouts, maximum-lag policy, and fencing status. An orchestrator should refuse an unsafe promotion rather than create two writable primaries. Resolve the underlying quorum or fencing problem before relaxing safety settings.
The rejoined node reports a timeline or WAL error
That node was likely started from an old history or retained divergent data. Stop it, preserve logs if needed, and take a fresh base backup from the current leader. Rejoining is a rebuild operation, not a normal restart after promotion.
Patroni, pg_auto_failover, or native procedures?
| Choice | Best fit | Important requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Native PostgreSQL plus manual promotion | Small teams that can accept operator-led failover and want minimal moving parts. | A precise runbook, fencing access, stable routing, monitoring, and regular drills. |
| Patroni | Teams wanting leader management, a REST API, DCS coordination, and HAProxy integration examples. | A fault-tolerant DCS quorum, secure management endpoints, and tested rejoin behavior. |
| pg_auto_failover | Teams preferring a monitor and explicit state machine with pg_autoctl-managed services. |
Correct package versions, exclusive service ownership by pg_autoctl, monitor availability, and fencing. |
Select based on your recovery objectives and operating skills, not on the promise of “automatic” failover alone. Every option still needs backups, routing, monitoring, and a way to prevent the old primary from writing.
Security and operational boundaries
- Use separate roles for replication, applications, monitoring, and administration.
- Restrict PostgreSQL and orchestration APIs to required networks; do not expose management endpoints publicly.
- Encrypt replication and client traffic where network trust does not justify plaintext connections.
- Store secrets in a protected credential mechanism with filesystem permissions limited to the database account.
- Audit promotion, fencing, configuration changes, and backup-restore operations.
- Keep configuration management deterministic so a reboot cannot silently start an unintended PostgreSQL instance.
