To resume Plex on a replacement Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, or other compatible player, install the Plex app on the new device and sign in to the Plex account that owns or can access your libraries. On most television-oriented apps, signing in means entering the four-character code shown on the screen at plex.tv/link from a browser that is already signed in to the correct account. The app normally refreshes within a few seconds.

You do not normally reinstall or migrate Plex Media Server. The replacement device is a player; your existing computer, NAS, or other server remains the place where media is stored and managed.

What changes when you replace a streaming device?

Plex has two separate parts. The player app runs on the television device and displays your libraries. Plex Media Server runs on the computer, NAS, or other host that stores your films, shows, music, and photos. Replacing a player changes the screen-side app, not the server-side media collection.

Part Where it runs What you do after replacing the player
Plex player app Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, smart-TV platform, or another supported connected device Install it from that device’s app store and link it to the appropriate Plex account.
Plex Media Server Computer, NAS, or another machine on your network Leave it running and signed in. Reinstall it only if the server itself was replaced or its storage and configuration were lost.
Plex account Your Plex sign-in identity Use the account that owns the server or has been invited to the shared libraries you want to watch.

Linking authenticates the new player; it does not copy media, move a server, or transfer ownership. Plex describes account linking as a way for an app to locate servers you own and content shared with you.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That distinction answers a common setup question: if the old streaming device failed but the computer or NAS that runs the server is unchanged, there is no reason to treat the new player as a fresh media-server installation. The server continues to manage the same media; the new device needs authorization to access it. Likewise, linking the replacement player does not bring over server settings or make a new library. It connects the app to the account and the content that account is permitted to see.

Check these things before you begin

A few minutes of preparation prevents most setup failures. Have the following ready:

  • The replacement streaming device connected to the television and to power.
  • Internet access for the device’s app store and the initial Plex sign-in.
  • The name and password for the Plex account that should see your libraries.
  • Your existing Plex Media Server powered on, with its media drives available.
  • The remote control or companion control method for the replacement device.
  • A phone or computer with a web browser for entering the on-screen link code.

Before linking, decide which account should be used. If you own the server, use the owner account. If someone else shared libraries with you, use the account that received that access. A new player can be signed in successfully but display different libraries—or none of the expected shared libraries—if it is linked to another household member’s account.

If you are deciding what to buy rather than setting up a device already in hand, confirm that the exact model and its region’s app store offer Plex. Plex identifies Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and other connected-device families as supported, but availability can vary by model and country. Also check that the device has the right HDMI and display compatibility and can join the same home network as your server.

These checks are more useful than relying on a platform-family name alone: support for a family does not guarantee that every model or regional store has the app. The cited setup information does not compare current models, prices, or performance, so use the specific model’s store and hardware details when making a purchase decision. If a compatible replacement is already in hand, buying another player is not a setup requirement.

Install Plex on the replacement device

  1. Complete the device’s basic setup. Connect it to the television, select the correct HDMI input, join your Wi-Fi or wired network, and finish any operating-system updates the device requests. You do not need to configure Plex Media Server during this step.
  2. Open the device’s app store. Use the store built into the replacement player, search for Plex, and choose the official Plex application. Store names and menus differ between platforms, so use the device’s own search rather than assuming a particular menu path.
  3. Install the app. Wait for the installation to finish, then launch Plex. If the store reports that Plex is unavailable, check the exact model, country or region setting, and operating-system compatibility before assuming your account is at fault.
  4. Select Sign In. Do not choose a guest or unrelated account if you need your personal or shared libraries. Big-screen versions generally show a four-character code after you select Sign In.

Keep the player online through installation and sign-in. The app store and account-linking process both need the replacement device to connect to the internet. This initial internet connection is separate from the later question of whether the player can reach your personal server locally or remotely.

Link the app with the correct Plex account

Leave the Plex app open on the television so the current code remains visible. On a phone or computer:

  1. Open plex.tv/link.
  2. Check the browser’s account indicator before entering anything. It must be the Plex account that owns the server or has been granted access to it. If another household member’s account is displayed, sign out and sign in with the intended account first.
  3. Enter the four-character code shown by the current session of the Plex app, then submit it.
  4. Return to the television. Plex says the player app refreshes a few seconds after a successful link. Once it refreshes, browse the home screen and confirm that the expected libraries and server name appear.

This link is an account sign-in, not a one-time copy of the old device’s settings. If you later sign out, reset the player, or use a different account, you will need to authenticate that app again.

The code flow is useful because you can enter credentials on a phone or computer instead of navigating a full account sign-in with a television remote. The browser session matters: opening the official link page is not enough if it is signed in to the wrong Plex account. Check the account first, enter only the code currently displayed by the replacement app, and give the player a few seconds to refresh after the code is accepted.

If the first attempt does not work, start again from the app rather than trying to reuse an old code. The official linking instructions describe the four-character code process but do not establish a universal expiration interval. In practice, the safest check is to use the code on the current app screen and verify the browser identity before submitting.

Make sure the right server and libraries appear

A successful account link and a reachable server are separate checks. The new app may show your account while still being unable to reach the server.

Think of the checks in order: first, did the app link to the right account? Second, does that account own or have permission to use the desired libraries? Third, can the player reach the server over the network being used? This order helps avoid changing server settings when the actual problem is simply that the browser or player was signed in under a different account.

When the player is at home

For local playback, place the replacement device and the Plex Media Server on the same local network. For example, both might connect to the same home router, whether by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A device connected to a guest network, an isolated VLAN, or a different router can be online but unable to discover the server.

  1. On the Plex home screen, open the server or library selector.
  2. Look for the server that normally contains your media.
  3. Open a known-working title and start playback.
  4. If playback starts, test both a film and an episode or music item if you use several library types.

Being able to browse the internet on the replacement player only proves that it has an internet connection; it does not prove that the player and your server can communicate locally. If your server is not listed, compare the network the player joined with the network the server uses. Make sure the server is powered on and its media storage is available, then check the app’s server or library selector again.

When the player is away from home

Remote playback from outside your home depends on Plex Remote Access being configured and operating on the server. Installing the player app and linking the account cannot create Remote Access by itself. If local playback works at home but the same player cannot connect from another location, investigate the server’s Remote Access status, home-router configuration, and internet connection rather than reinstalling the player app.

This difference is important when testing a replacement device. First confirm that it can play something while on the same local network as the server. If local playback succeeds but an away-from-home test fails, the player installation and account link may already be fine; the remaining requirement is working Remote Access on the existing server.

When a shared library is expected

Use the Plex account that was invited to the server. A family member’s account, a managed user, and the server owner’s account can have different library permissions. If the server owner has not granted the account access, the new device can be linked correctly and still show no shared content.

Ask the server owner to confirm that access was granted to the account you actually used on the player. Account linking helps Plex find owned and shared servers, but it does not grant new library permissions or transfer an invitation from one account to another. Once the account is correct, check network access separately.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures

The four-character code is rejected

  • Confirm that the browser is signed in to the intended Plex account, not merely that the browser can open the link page.
  • Read the code from the current Plex app session. Do not reuse a code from a previous attempt, a photograph, or another device.
  • Enter the code at plex.tv/link exactly as displayed and submit it again.
  • Return to the app and restart the Sign In flow if the screen has changed. The official linking instructions do not specify a universal expiration time, so do not rely on a guessed timeout; use the code currently shown.
  • If the page reports a sign-in problem, complete the account sign-in in the browser first, then retry the code entry.

The app says it linked, but no libraries are visible

  1. Open the account details in the app and verify that the signed-in identity is the one with server access.
  2. Check that the Plex Media Server is powered on, running, and signed in to its Plex account.
  3. At home, put the player and server on the same local network. Disconnecting from a guest network and joining the main household network often resolves discovery problems.
  4. For an off-site player, verify that Remote Access is working on the server. A normal internet connection on the television does not prove that the server is reachable from outside.
  5. After correcting the account or network, close and reopen Plex and check the server selector again.

If the account is correct but expected content is absent, distinguish a missing server from missing permissions. A server that does not appear points you back to server availability and connectivity. A shared server that is visible but lacks particular libraries may require the owner to check which access was granted. In either case, installing the app again is not the first thing to try.

The app cannot be found in the store

Confirm the exact hardware model and the store region. Plex support covers major platform families, but a particular low-cost model, older operating-system version, or regional store may differ. Install all available device updates and search the store again. If Plex remains unavailable, choose a player whose model and local store explicitly support the Plex app rather than attempting to install an unverified package.

Playback works on one network but not another

That pattern points to connectivity rather than account linking. At home, compare the network name shown by the player with the network used by the server. Away from home, test whether the server reports Remote Access as available. If the server is asleep, the media drive is disconnected, or the home internet connection is down, the replacement device cannot retrieve the files even though the app itself opens normally.

The server appears, but a particular item will not play

First test another title. If only one file fails, the issue may be specific to that media or to the server’s ability to read its storage, not to the replacement-device sign-in. If every title fails, return to the account and network checks above before changing server libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The old player still appears in the account

An old entry in Authorized Devices does not stop you from using the replacement player. Removing it is optional housekeeping. If you want to tidy the list or revoke the old player’s authorization, use the account owner’s Authorized Devices area; if the old device is used again later, sign out of its Plex app and back in to register it again.

Remove the old player (optional)

You can leave the failed or replaced device in the account’s device list; removing it is housekeeping, not part of the migration. An account owner can inspect linked devices in Plex’s Authorized Devices list and remove entries that are no longer used.

  1. Sign in to the Plex account that owns the device authorization.
  2. Open the account’s Authorized Devices area.
  3. Identify the old player by its device name or platform and remove it if you no longer want it listed.
  4. If you later recover that device and want to use it again, Plex says to sign out in its app and sign back in so it registers again.

Deleting an entry does not erase your server, libraries, or media. It only revokes that device’s account authorization until it is linked again. You do not have to remove the old player before linking the new one, and removal does not move the server or free the old device’s media for transfer; the server remains where it was.

If you are choosing a replacement player

The setup procedure is similar across supported platforms, so focus on compatibility and connectivity rather than assuming one family is universally best.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Why it matters How to verify it
Plex app support The device must be able to install the official player app. Check the exact model in its own app store and confirm that Plex is offered in your country or region.
TV and connection fit A player that cannot use your display or available port will not help, regardless of app support. Match HDMI, display-resolution, power, and remote-control requirements before buying.
Home-network access Local Plex playback requires the player and server to communicate on the same local network. Confirm that the player supports your Wi-Fi or Ethernet arrangement and will not be confined to an isolated guest network.
Remote viewing need Watching outside the home requires a functioning Remote Access setup on the server. Check Remote Access on the existing server; do not expect the new player to provide it automatically.

No new hardware is required when your replacement device is already compatible and in hand. The essential actions are installing the player app and linking the account with library access.

If you are shopping because the previous player failed, treat the supported platform list as a starting point, not a model-by-model buying recommendation. Confirm the app is available on the exact model and in your store region, then check that it fits your television and can join the network the server uses. Those are the relevant setup considerations; there is no single Plex player that can be named best for every household from platform support alone.

There is also no need to buy another device simply because you are setting up Plex again: if a compatible replacement is already connected, the app and account link are the required steps. The setup guidance does not establish current retail prices or compare device performance, so check retailers and manufacturers for those details if you are still choosing hardware.

Do you need to set up Plex Media Server again?

Usually, no. If the original server computer or NAS is still running with its media storage and Plex configuration intact, the new player simply signs in and connects to it. Rebuilding the server becomes necessary only when the server host, its storage, or its Plex installation was itself replaced or lost. A new television player does not, by itself, justify rescanning libraries or moving media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the server itself was changed, that is a separate task from replacing the player. For this player setup, avoid reinstalling or changing the server just to make a new app appear. First verify the account, whether the server is running and signed in, and whether the local-network or Remote Access requirement applies to your location.

Final verification checklist

  • The official Plex app is installed from the replacement device’s app store.
  • The app is linked with the Plex account that owns or has access to the intended server.
  • The server name and expected libraries are visible.
  • A known title plays while the player and server are on the same home network.
  • If you need off-site viewing, Remote Access is functioning on the existing server.
  • The old device has been removed from Authorized Devices only if you want to clean up the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up Plex on a new streaming device?

Install the Plex player app from the replacement device’s app store, open it, choose Sign In, and link it to the Plex account that owns or can access the libraries. On a big-screen app, enter the four-character code shown on the TV at plex.tv/link from a browser signed into that account.

How do I link my Plex account to my new TV?

Leave the code on the TV screen, visit plex.tv/link on a phone or computer, confirm the browser is signed into the right Plex account, and submit the code. The player app should refresh a few seconds after successful linking.

Why can’t my new Roku or Fire TV see my Plex server?

First verify that the player is linked to the account with server access and that the server is powered on and signed in. At home, the player and server need to be on the same local network. Away from home, the server needs working Remote Access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to set up Plex Media Server again after replacing a streaming device?

Usually not. The streaming device runs the Plex player app, while Plex Media Server remains on your existing computer, NAS, or other host. Rebuild the server only if that server host, storage, or installation was itself replaced or lost.

Do I have to remove my old streaming device before I link the replacement?

No. Old-device cleanup is optional. An account owner can remove it from Authorized Devices, and a removed device can be registered again by signing out of Plex on it and signing back in.

Do I need to buy a particular streaming device to use Plex?

Not if you already have a compatible replacement in hand. If shopping, verify Plex availability for the exact model and region, along with TV and network compatibility; platform-family support alone does not establish that every model is supported.

The Bottom Line

To resume Plex on a replacement streaming device, install the Plex player app, link it to the account with access to your libraries, and confirm the player can reach the existing server. Local playback requires the player and server on the same local network; playback away from home depends on working Remote Access. You generally do not need to reinstall Plex Media Server or remove the old player.
