The safest way to let a deployment account connect to PostgreSQL without an interactive password prompt is usually peer authentication over a local Unix socket. PostgreSQL checks that the operating-system account running the deployment matches the database login, so no password is stored or transmitted. For a runner on another host, peer cannot work; use a narrowly scoped host rule with SCRAM and a protected password file instead. In every case, configure pg_hba.conf carefully, reload PostgreSQL, and grant the deploy role only the database and object privileges its migrations require.
What passwordless PostgreSQL access actually means
A deployment command has two separate jobs:
- Authentication: PostgreSQL decides whether the client may log in as a database role.
- Authorization: PostgreSQL decides what that role may do after login.
Removing a password prompt changes only authentication. A successful login does not automatically grant access to a database, schema, table, sequence, function, or extension. The deploy role still needs the minimum privileges required by your migration process.
PostgreSQL reads client-authentication records from pg_hba.conf. Records are evaluated from top to bottom, and the first matching record determines the method. A correct rule placed below a broader rule may never be used. PostgreSQL reads the file at startup and when it receives a configuration reload, so edits do not take effect until you reload the server.
Choose the right connection model
| Method | Connection scope | Interactive prompt | Security property | Operational caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
peer |
Local Unix-domain socket only | No | Binds the database login to the operating-system identity | The deployment process and PostgreSQL must be on the same host, with matching names or an explicit identity map |
trust |
Any connection covered by its HBA rule | No | None beyond whatever network and HBA reachability already provide | Every client allowed by the rule can claim the named database role without proving an identity |
SCRAM plus .pgpass |
Local socket or TCP | No interactive prompt | Password authentication, with access controlled by file permissions | The secret still exists and must be protected, rotated, and distributed securely |
Use peer for a release service or CI agent that runs on the database host. Use SCRAM for a remote runner. Treat trust as an exceptional configuration for a tightly controlled environment, never as a shortcut for a broad network.

Prepare a dedicated deploy role
Create a login role without making it a superuser
Create a database login dedicated to deployments rather than reusing a human administrator or the operating-system superuser. A role used with peer authentication does not need a password.
CREATE ROLE deploy_user LOGIN;
Do not grant SUPERUSER, CREATEDB, CREATEROLE, or unrestricted membership merely to make migrations convenient. If your migration tool must create or alter objects, grant those capabilities in the target schema or make the migration role the owner of objects it is expected to change.
Grant database and schema access deliberately
The following is a starting pattern; adapt the database and schema names to your application and remove anything your deployment does not need.
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE appdb TO deploy_user;
-- Run the remaining statements while connected to appdb.
GRANT USAGE, CREATE ON SCHEMA app TO deploy_user;
GRANT SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
ON ALL TABLES IN SCHEMA app TO deploy_user;
GRANT USAGE, SELECT, UPDATE
ON ALL SEQUENCES IN SCHEMA app TO deploy_user;
Many migration systems need to create indexes, alter tables, or create functions. PostgreSQL does not provide one universal “migration privilege”; ownership and object-specific privileges determine which statements succeed. Review the statements your migration tool actually runs and grant only those capabilities. If you revoke broad defaults from PUBLIC, check that existing applications still have the access they need.
Keep the Unix account separate
Run the release service under a dedicated operating-system account, such as deployer, rather than a personal shell account. Separation makes the peer rule auditable and prevents an unrelated local user from inheriting deployment access. The account should have only the filesystem and service permissions required to perform a release.
Configure local peer authentication
Find the active HBA file
Do not assume the file is in a particular data directory, especially on systems with multiple PostgreSQL clusters. Ask the server which file it is using:

psql --dbname=postgres --command='SHOW hba_file;'
Run that command as a role allowed to connect to the server. The result is the path PostgreSQL will read for client authentication.
Add a specific rule before broad rules
For an operating-system account and database role with the same name, add a line such as this near the top of the local rules:
# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
local appdb deploy_user peer
local matches Unix-domain socket connections. It does not match TCP connections, even when the TCP client connects to 127.0.0.1 or localhost. peer obtains the client operating-system user name from the kernel and compares it with the requested PostgreSQL role.
Place the line before a broad entry such as local all all scram-sha-256 or local all all peer. Because HBA processing stops at the first match, a later line cannot override an earlier one.
Map different operating-system and database names
If the service account is called deployer but the database role is deploy_user, define an explicit map in pg_ident.conf:
# MAPNAME SYSTEM-USERNAME PG-USERNAME
deploymap deployer deploy_user
Then reference that map in the HBA rule:
local appdb deploy_user peer map=deploymap
The map should contain only the exact operating-system-to-database relationship required by the release service. Do not use a wildcard mapping that lets every local account become a privileged database role.

Reload the configuration
After saving pg_hba.conf (and pg_ident.conf, if used), ask PostgreSQL to reread the files:
psql --dbname=postgres --command='SELECT pg_reload_conf();'
The result should be t. A reload does not terminate existing sessions; it applies the new authentication rules to subsequent connection attempts.

On supported PostgreSQL versions, inspect the parsed HBA rules and any errors:
SELECT line_number, type, database, user_name, address,
auth_method, error
FROM pg_hba_file_rules
WHERE error IS NOT NULL;
A syntax error can leave the intended rule unusable. Fix the reported line, reload again, and repeat the check. Also verify that the PostgreSQL service account can read both configuration files.
Test the exact path used by deployment
Force the local socket and expected role
Run the test as the same operating-system account that executes releases. Omitting -h makes psql use the platform’s default Unix socket rather than TCP:
sudo -u deployer psql
--dbname=appdb
--command='SELECT current_user, current_database();'
Replace deployer and appdb with your actual account and database. The output should show the intended database role and database. If the role names are identical, the command can be run as sudo -u deploy_user; when they differ, the pg_ident.conf map must be present.

Verify authorization separately
Authentication success does not prove that migrations can connect or modify objects. Check the database-level permission explicitly:
sudo -u deployer psql --dbname=appdb --command
"SELECT current_user,
has_database_privilege(current_user,
current_database(),
'CONNECT');"
Then run a harmless query against the target schema, such as listing it with dn+, and test only the object operations your migration process needs. A connection that succeeds but fails on CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE, or a sequence operation indicates an authorization problem, not an HBA problem.
Use the same parameters as the migration command
A test against the default database or socket can be misleading. Copy the migration tool’s database name, role, host setting, port, and environment into a diagnostic command. In particular, adding --host=localhost changes the connection from a Unix socket to TCP and therefore bypasses a local ... peer rule.
Configure a remote deploy runner with SCRAM
Use a host rule restricted to one source
A remote runner cannot use peer authentication because the database server cannot inspect the runner’s local operating-system account. Add a host rule for the exact database, role, and source address. For example:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
host appdb deploy_user 203.0.113.10/32 scram-sha-256
203.0.113.10/32 is documentation-only; replace it with the runner’s fixed address or a tightly controlled network. Put this line before broader host rules. Also restrict the same traffic with network firewalls or security groups. The HBA rule is not a substitute for network isolation.
SCRAM requires a password for the role. Set or rotate it through your approved secret-management process, and ensure the role’s password is not embedded in source control, migration files, shell history, or command-line arguments.

Store the secret in a protected password file
For libpq clients such as psql, place a matching entry in the deploy account’s .pgpass file:
hostname:port:database:username:password
For example, a line might use the database host, port 5432, appdb, and deploy_user. The first matching line wins, and an asterisk can match a field. If a password contains a colon or backslash, escape that character with a backslash. Keep the file owned by the deploy account and deny group and world access:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheschmod 0600 ~/.pgpass
On Unix systems, libpq ignores the file when group or world permissions allow access. If the file is stored elsewhere, set PGPASSFILE for the deployment process and apply the same ownership and permission restrictions. A password file removes the interactive prompt; it does not make the connection passwordless in the security sense.
Avoid PGPASSWORD for production automation
Although PGPASSWORD can be convenient for a short-lived test, operating-system tools may expose environment variables to other processes or diagnostics. A protected password file is the documented libpq mechanism for non-interactive password use. Rotate the credential when a runner is replaced, an account is compromised, or the deployment boundary changes.
Why broad trust rules are dangerous
A rule such as:
host all all 0.0.0.0/0 trust
does not mean “skip the prompt for my deployment server.” It means that any client able to reach the server through that rule can log in as any database role named in its connection request, without a password or another proof of identity. PostgreSQL documentation describes this method as allowing anyone who can connect through the matching rule to log in as any PostgreSQL user they choose.
If an isolated test environment genuinely requires trust, narrow it to one database, one role, and the smallest possible source address, and put it ahead of no broader rule. Never expose a broad trust rule to a production network or the public internet. For local deployments, peer provides an identity check without storing a secret and is the better default.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Peer authentication failed for user |
The Unix account does not match the database role, the identity map is missing, or the map does not contain the exact pair | Run the command as the intended service account; correct pg_ident.conf and the map= name, then reload |
| The password prompt appears despite a peer rule | The client is using TCP, or an earlier HBA line matched first | Remove --host for a socket test, inspect the effective host setting, and move the specific local rule above broader rules |
no pg_hba.conf entry |
No record matches the connection’s type, database, role, or source address | Add a narrowly scoped matching record and reload; verify the actual database, role, host, and port |
| Connection succeeds but migration statements fail | The role lacks CONNECT, schema usage, object privileges, or ownership |
Grant only the required database, schema, table, sequence, and migration privileges |
| SCRAM connection keeps asking for a password | The password file is absent, has the wrong path or fields, is unreadable because permissions are too open, or has no matching first line | Set PGPASSFILE if needed, use the exact host/port/database/user fields, escape special characters, and run chmod 0600 |
| Changes appear to have no effect | The wrong HBA file was edited, the configuration was not reloaded, or the edited rule is below an earlier match | Run SHOW hba_file, call pg_reload_conf(), inspect pg_hba_file_rules, and review rule order |
Operational checklist for a safe setup
- Use a dedicated database login and a separate operating-system service account.
- Grant
CONNECTand only the schema and object privileges that migrations need. - For same-host deployments, prefer
local ... peerand keep the rule specific to the database and role. - Use
pg_ident.confonly when names differ, and map the exact account pair. - For remote runners, use SCRAM with a fixed source CIDR and a protected
.pgpassorPGPASSFILE. - Never use a broad
trustrule as a production shortcut. - Reload after every HBA or identity-map change and check for parse errors.
- Test with the same user, host mode, database, and role that the deployment command uses.
- Keep database credentials out of command lines, repositories, logs, and shared environment dumps.
- Document the rule’s purpose, source address, required privileges, and credential-rotation owner.
Recommended decision
If the release process runs on the PostgreSQL host, configure a dedicated Unix account and a narrowly scoped local ... peer rule. It eliminates password handling while still tying the database login to an operating-system identity. If the runner is remote, do not try to force peer or replace authentication with broad trust; use a source-restricted SCRAM rule and a 0600 password file, then manage that secret as a production credential.
