To restrict Sonic games on a Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls. Choose a preset or Custom Settings, set Restricted Software to the age level that fits your family, review communication options, and save with a PIN. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app adds play-time limits, activity history, selected-game exceptions, and GameChat management.

The controls apply to the entire console, not to one child’s profile. Check the rating for the exact Sonic release and the rating system used in your region before choosing a threshold.

What Switch 2 parental controls can do for Sonic games

Nintendo’s controls work at the console level. They use the rating category assigned to each game by the rating organization selected for the system, rather than a special “Sonic” category. A parent can set an age threshold, restrict communication, and—through the smart-device app—add time and activity rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Software age restriction: Blocks software above the selected age level, including a Sonic game whose rating exceeds that level.
  • Custom settings: Lets you choose a specific age threshold instead of relying only on a broad preset.
  • Communication restriction: Limits open communication, such as chat features and message exchange, across software or by title where the setting allows that choice.
  • App-only additions: Play-time limits, gameplay history, individually selected games that may ignore the software restriction, and GameChat management.
  • System-wide scope: The same restrictions affect everyone who uses that Switch 2.

Nintendo describes the setup this way: “Nintendo Switch 2 Parental Controls can be set up directly on the console or through our smart device app.” That gives you two setup routes, but neither route creates separate age rules for different user profiles on the same console.

The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is a free utility; buying a Sonic game or any accessory is not required to configure these settings. Its value is the additional scheduling, activity, exception, and GameChat controls rather than a different rating system.

Check the Sonic game’s rating before choosing a limit

Age restrictions compare the game’s rating with the rating organization selected for your console and region. The organization normally defaults to the one appropriate for the system’s region. A rating shown for a U.S. release should not be assumed to apply to a European, Australian, or other regional edition.

For example, the U.S. ESRB listings provide these two different results:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Sonic release U.S. ESRB rating Content descriptors What the example shows
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS for Nintendo Switch 2 Everyone 10+ (E10+) Fantasy Violence; In-Game Purchases A threshold set below E10+ can block this title.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Everyone (E) Mild Fantasy Violence This title has a different age category from the E10+ example.

These are U.S. examples, not a universal rating for every Sonic game, edition, or territory. Read the rating shown on the game’s package, Nintendo eShop listing, or the relevant local rating database for the exact copy your child will use. In-game purchases in a descriptor are not the same thing as Nintendo eShop purchase controls; those settings are managed separately.

A descriptor explains why a board assigned a category, but the parental-control switch uses the category itself. For example, a title marked E10+ is treated according to that E10+ level even if you are comfortable with its fantasy-violence descriptor. If your family’s rule is based on content rather than age, use the custom threshold as a starting point and review the individual game before deciding whether an exception is appropriate.

Prepare before changing the settings

  • Identify the youngest regular player. Because the rule is system-wide, start with the age level appropriate for the youngest person who uses the console.
  • Check each game’s edition and region. A Sonic title can have different ratings in different markets or on different hardware editions.
  • Decide whether a smart device is available. The console alone handles the core software and communication rules. The app is needed for the additional time, history, selected-game exception, and GameChat features.
  • Choose a private PIN. Anyone who knows the PIN can change or remove the console restrictions, so do not use a code that children can easily guess.
  • Separate game-use rules from account rules. Software age limits and in-game communication are parental-control settings. eShop viewing and purchase restrictions, friend suggestions, and third-party information-sharing controls belong to Nintendo Account settings.
  • List the software you want to review. Include downloaded games, physical cards, demos, and future purchases. A threshold applies to software on the console, not just to the Sonic title currently inserted.

Set restrictions directly on the Switch 2

This route does not require the smart-device app and is the fastest way to apply an age threshold to Sonic software.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Parental Controls, then choose Set Up Parental Controls.
  3. When offered the choice, continue without the app if you want to configure the console directly.
  4. Select a restriction preset, or choose Custom Settings for a specific configuration.
  5. Open Restricted Software and select the age threshold that matches your family’s decision. Use the rating organization appropriate to your region.
  6. Review the communication restriction. You can restrict communication broadly or adjust it by title where the available setting provides that choice.
  7. Save the settings and create or confirm the parental-controls PIN.

After saving, the software rule is evaluated against the rating category attached to each game. If a Sonic game is above the selected threshold, the restriction can prevent its use on that console unless an allowed-software exception is configured in the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the result with the child’s profile after saving, then lock the screen or return to the HOME Menu. Testing catches a threshold selected in the wrong direction and confirms that the PIN prompt appears when expected. Do not share the PIN merely to let an older child launch one game; use an app exception instead when that feature fits your plan.

Change an existing console setup

To revise a saved configuration, use this path:

  1. Open System Settings > Parental Controls > Change Settings.
  2. Enter the parental-controls PIN.
  3. Select Change Parental-Controls Settings.
  4. Choose Restriction Level, then select a preset or Custom Settings.
  5. Adjust the software, communication, or other available controls and select Save.

Nintendo can revise menu wording in a system update. If a label is different on your console, use the current Nintendo Switch 2 support instructions as the authority rather than selecting a similarly named option at random.

Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for more control

The smart-device app is useful when an age threshold alone is not enough. Set up the app for the Switch 2 as prompted, then use its controls for the features that are not available in the basic console workflow. The console and app can both change software and in-game communication settings, so a parent can start on the console and add the app later.

Play-time limits

Play-time controls let a parent set a permitted amount or schedule for gameplay. This is separate from a Sonic game’s age rating: a game can be age-appropriate and still be subject to a time limit. A time limit also does not alter the title’s rating or permit a game blocked by the software threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gameplay history

The app can show gameplay history, giving a parent visibility into which software has been used. History is an activity feature, not a replacement for the software restriction or a guarantee that every detail of a child’s communication will be visible. Use it to identify games that need a rating review or a family conversation.

Selected-game exceptions

The app can allow individually selected software to ignore the Restricted Software rule. This is useful when the general threshold is set for a younger child but a parent has reviewed a particular Sonic title and wants to permit it.

An exception does not automatically change other controls. It should not be treated as permission for in-game communication, GameChat, purchases, or account features. Those settings remain governed by their own controls. Remove an exception when the child no longer needs it, and check the allow list after changing consoles or reinstalling software.

GameChat management

Nintendo lists GameChat management among the app’s options. Nintendo also says the app is required for children under 16 to use GameChat under its described setup. Configure GameChat separately from the ordinary in-game communication setting. An age-appropriate Sonic game can therefore remain playable while GameChat is disabled or limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to block one Sonic game without blocking every game

There is no Sonic-specific switch that creates an independent age rule for each user. Start with the system-wide threshold, then use the app’s selected-game exception when the family decision requires one reviewed title to be available despite the general age setting.

  1. Set the console’s Restricted Software threshold for the youngest regular user.
  2. Confirm the rating of the Sonic title you have reviewed.
  3. If the title is above the threshold but you want to permit it, select that software in the app’s allow list or exception feature.
  4. Keep communication, GameChat, and purchase decisions separate; allowing the game does not automatically allow those activities.

This approach is an exception to a general rule, not a set of different age limits. If two children need genuinely different thresholds, the system-wide design means you must choose a family-wide baseline and supervise or selectively allow software rather than assigning a separate rating ceiling to each profile.

Understand communication controls and GameChat

Switch 2 has more than one communication-related setting, and confusing them can leave an expected gap in your plan.

In-game communication

Nintendo describes this control as restricting open communication between users, including chat features and message exchange. Depending on the setting, it can apply across software or be adjusted by title. Review the title-specific choices if one multiplayer Sonic game needs a different rule from another.

GameChat

Nintendo’s FAQ states that the in-game communication restriction does not apply to GameChat. Treat GameChat as a separate control in the smart-device app, particularly when a child is under 16 and the app-based setup is required for use.

Why the distinction matters

Setting an in-game communication restriction and then assuming GameChat is covered can produce a result different from what you intended. Review both areas: the communication setting on the console or app, and GameChat management in the app. Explain the difference to other caregivers so a change in one area is not mistaken for a change in the other.

Keep Nintendo Account controls separate

Parental controls for game use do not replace Nintendo Account settings. Use the account controls for:

  • eShop viewing and purchase restrictions;
  • friend suggestions; and
  • third-party information-sharing controls.

Do not describe an eShop purchase block as a Sonic-game restriction. A child could be prevented from buying a title while still being able to play an already installed title, or could be blocked from a game by its age rating while account purchases remain governed by a different rule. If you want both outcomes, configure both areas and test them independently.

Troubleshoot common Sonic-control problems

A Sonic game still starts after you set a restriction

  • Check that the saved restriction threshold is lower than the game’s actual rating.
  • Verify the rating organization and region. A U.S. ESRB example may not match the rating attached to your local edition.
  • Look for an app-created selected-game exception that permits the title.
  • Confirm that you changed the settings on the Switch 2 being used. Restrictions are tied to the console, not a cloud-wide family rule.
  • Make sure the child does not know the parental-controls PIN.
  • Check whether the game is a different edition from the one you originally reviewed.

You expected different limits for different children

Switch 2 controls are system-wide. Set the baseline for the youngest regular user and use carefully reviewed software exceptions where appropriate. The system does not provide an independent software age threshold for each user profile.

Chat is still available after you restricted communication

Check whether the activity is ordinary in-game communication or GameChat. Nintendo says the in-game communication restriction does not apply to GameChat, so review GameChat management in the smart-device app separately.

You cannot find the exact menu wording

System software can change labels. Begin at System Settings > Parental Controls, look for the current Set Up Parental Controls or Change Settings entry, and consult Nintendo’s current Switch 2 support instructions if your screen differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You blocked a game but purchases remain possible

Software blocking and eShop purchasing are separate. Configure purchase and viewing restrictions in Nintendo Account settings rather than assuming the age threshold also controls transactions.

The app shows a game you did not expect

Gameplay history records software use, while the allow list records exceptions. Review both lists before changing the threshold. Seeing a Sonic title in history does not prove that it bypassed a restriction; it may have been used before the rule changed or under an approved exception.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical family configuration

For a mixed-age household, a sensible sequence is:

  1. Use the youngest regular player to select the console-wide software threshold.
  2. Set communication restrictions conservatively, then decide whether any title needs a different communication rule.
  3. Install and configure the app if the family needs time limits, history, selected-game exceptions, or GameChat controls.
  4. Review the exact ratings for the Sonic releases the household owns or plans to use.
  5. Allow a particular title only after checking its content and confirming that the exception does not undermine the separate communication, GameChat, or account rules.
  6. Keep the PIN private and revisit the settings when a child’s age, the household’s devices, or the available system software changes.

This setup keeps the age decision, communication decision, time decision, and purchase decision visible as separate choices. That separation is important because no single Sonic toggle controls all four. Recheck the configuration after a console transfer, a major system update, or a new game purchase so an old exception does not become an accidental permanent permission.

Key points to remember

  • Start at System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls to configure the console without the app.
  • Ratings are regional and title-specific; do not assume every Sonic game has the same category.
  • Restrictions apply to everyone using that Switch 2.
  • The app adds play-time limits, gameplay history, selected-game exceptions, and GameChat management.
  • In-game communication restrictions do not cover GameChat, according to Nintendo’s FAQ.
  • Nintendo Account settings handle eShop and other account-level controls separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I block a Sonic game on Switch 2?

Open System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls, choose a preset or Custom Settings, and set Restricted Software to an age level below the game’s rating. The rule applies to the whole console. If you later approve one reviewed title, use the app’s selected-game exception rather than sharing the PIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I set a different age limit just for Sonic games?

No. Switch 2 software restrictions are system-wide and use the selected regional rating organization. Set the family-wide threshold for the youngest regular player, then consider an individually selected-game exception in the app for a title you have reviewed.

What rating does SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS have on Switch 2?

The U.S. ESRB listing rates it Everyone 10+ (E10+) with Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases. That is a U.S. example; check the package or local listing for your edition and region.

What rating does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds have?

The U.S. ESRB listing rates it Everyone (E) with Mild Fantasy Violence. Ratings can differ by market or edition, so verify the exact copy your child will use.

Do Switch 2 parental controls work for GameChat?

GameChat is managed separately. Nintendo says the ordinary in-game communication restriction does not apply to GameChat, and its described setup requires the smart-device app for children under 16. Review GameChat controls in the app even when in-game chat is restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the phone app to block a Sonic game?

No. The console can set the software age threshold and communication restrictions without a smart device. The app adds play-time limits, gameplay history, selected-game exceptions, and GameChat management.

Does blocking a game stop eShop purchases?

No. Software age restrictions and eShop viewing or purchase controls are separate. Configure purchase and account-level restrictions through Nintendo Account settings.

Can two children have different Sonic limits on one Switch 2?

Not through separate profile thresholds. Because controls are system-wide, choose a baseline for the youngest user and use supervision or carefully reviewed app exceptions for older children.

The Bottom Line

Set the Switch 2’s system-wide Restricted Software threshold from System Settings > Parental Controls, verify the exact Sonic game’s local rating, and keep the PIN private. Add the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app when you need schedules, history, selected-game exceptions, or GameChat management. Treat in-game communication, GameChat, and Nintendo Account purchase controls as separate settings.
