Use a separate child account, not an adult profile, then configure the console family controls before allowing Grand Theft Auto VI. On PS5, the family manager path is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. On Xbox Series X|S, use Settings > Privacy and online safety, select the child, and open Content restrictions. Set an age level, restrict communication and user-generated content, decide whether multiplayer and cross-network play are allowed, and apply spending and play-time limits.
Grand Theft Auto VI is listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store listing gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. A final ESRB rating was not confirmed in the official information available for this guide, so check the live ESRB or regional rating entry before launch and choose that rating—or a stricter one—in the family settings.
What parental controls can change in GTA VI
Console controls work at the account and platform level. They are the first barrier for a child who uses the console without an adult present, but they are not a substitute for supervision or a conversation about the game’s mature themes.
- Age access: block games above the child’s permitted age level.
- Communication: limit voice and text communication, party chat, messages, invitations, and contact with other players.
- User-generated content: restrict viewing or sharing player-created material where the platform offers that control.
- Online play: decide whether multiplayer, invitations, and cross-network play are permitted.
- Purchases: control spending and require an adult decision for purchases rather than leaving a payment method available to the child.
- Time: set play-time boundaries and review usage.
These settings cannot determine whether a particular scene, conversation, stranger, or transaction is appropriate for your family. Discuss violence, sexual content, strong language, drugs, online strangers, and in-game purchases before enabling online features.

Check the account and platform requirements first
Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its platform information also says the platform account’s region must match the applicable region. Create the child’s account in the correct region rather than attempting to work around a regional mismatch.
| Platform | Account arrangement | Important online conditions | Age-control model |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Adult PlayStation account as family manager, with the child added to the family | The PlayStation Store listing says online features require a PlayStation account. Some features may also require a Rockstar Games account, internet access, extra fees, or other conditions. | Family and parental controls use age levels and content categories. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Child added to the Microsoft family and signed in with a separate Xbox profile | The Xbox listing warns that age-restricted content may be unavailable to child accounts with restrictions. Some features require internet access or Rockstar account registration. | Content restrictions use a numerical age scale tied to rating categories. |
Do not share an adult profile with a child. A shared profile makes it difficult to apply age, communication, spending, and time limits to the person actually playing.
Set up GTA VI parental controls on PS5
1. Create or add the child to the PlayStation family
- Sign in on the PS5 with the adult PlayStation account that will manage the family.
- Create the child account or add the existing child account to the family. The adult account becomes the family manager.
- Have the child use that separate account whenever playing, including during setup testing.
The family manager is the account that can change the child’s restrictions. If another adult in the household needs access, decide who will manage settings before the child begins using the console.

2. Open the child’s parental controls
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Family and Parental Controls.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child’s account and choose Parental Controls.
Make these changes while the child’s account is visible in Family Management. Changing settings on the adult profile will not apply the intended limits to the child.
3. Set the game and online age level
- Choose the age level or game restriction that matches the child’s age and your household decision.
- When the final GTA VI rating is published, use that rating as the reference point. If you want a more cautious approach, choose a stricter level.
- Use Age Filtering for Online Content to limit what the child can see in the PlayStation Store and online areas.
No final ESRB rating for GTA VI was confirmed in the official information used here. Do not rely on an unofficial rating graphic or a rumor. Recheck the live ESRB or relevant regional rating entry before release and after any major account or game update.
4. Restrict communication and user-created material
In the child’s parental controls, open Communicating and User-Generated Content. Until you have made an explicit decision, restrict:
- party voice chat;
- direct and group messages;
- messages or invitations from other players;
- viewing player-created content;
- sharing content created or captured by the child.
These controls reduce unsolicited contact, but they do not make online play risk-free. Review them again if a game update adds a new social feature or changes which services handle communication.

5. Review spending and play time
Use the family controls to review the child’s spending allowance and play-time settings. Keep payment methods under adult control and decide in advance whether the child must ask before every purchase, can use a fixed allowance, or cannot make purchases at all. Set a time schedule that reflects school, sleep, and other household obligations.
6. Test the restrictions as the child
- Sign out of the adult account.
- Sign in with the child’s account.
- Check whether GTA VI appears available at the chosen age level.
- Attempt to open the relevant online area only if you intend to test it.
- Confirm that chat, messages, player-created content, purchases, and time limits behave as expected.
If a setting is too permissive, return to the adult family-manager account and tighten it before allowing normal play.
Set up GTA VI parental controls on Xbox Series X|S
1. Add the child to the Microsoft family
- Add the child to the Microsoft family using the adult account that will manage the settings.
- Ensure the child signs in with a separate Xbox profile.
- Do not use the adult profile as a workaround if GTA VI is blocked by the child’s age restriction.
The separate profile lets Xbox apply age, communication, multiplayer, spending, and time controls to the correct person.
2. Open Content restrictions
- On the Xbox console, open Settings.
- Choose Privacy and online safety.
- Select the family member whose settings you are changing.
- Open Content restrictions.
The Xbox Family Settings app provides another management surface for content, individual game approvals, play-time limits, spending, and notifications. Use whichever surface you can check consistently, but verify the result on the child’s console profile.

Xbox content restrictions use a numerical age scale tied to rating categories. A lower permitted age blocks games with higher age ratings. Select the level that matches the child and your household rule, then check the live regional rating when GTA VI launches.
The Xbox store warns that age-restricted content may be unavailable to child accounts with restrictions. If GTA VI does not open, first determine whether the block is the intended result of the age setting. Do not remove the child’s protections simply to make the game launch.
4. Configure communication and multiplayer
In Communication & multiplayer, choose each permission deliberately:

- Rule the city streets in a thrilling open-world crime adventure.
- Drive luxury cars, bikes, and police vehicles in epic missions.
- Fight gang wars, escape police chases, and dominate turf battles.
- Explore a massive urban map packed with action and secrets.
- Play offline anytime — no internet required for crime fun!
- who may communicate with the child by voice;
- who may communicate by text or messages;
- who may send game invitations;
- whether multiplayer is allowed;
- whether cross-network play is allowed.
For a first setup, block or restrict these features and enable them one at a time only after discussing the risks and deciding which players or services are acceptable.

Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the family controls to set play-time limits, manage spending, approve an individual game where appropriate, and receive notifications. Keep the child’s purchase permissions narrower than the adult account’s permissions. A child should not be able to add a payment method or bypass an approval requirement through another profile.
6. Test with the child’s profile
- Sign out of the adult account and sign in to the child’s Xbox profile.
- Check the game’s availability under the chosen age setting.
- Verify communication, multiplayer, invitations, and cross-network play using the actual child profile.
- Check that purchase approval, spending limits, notifications, and time limits are active.
If the title is blocked, the adult must decide whether it is appropriate and whether to approve it. Sharing an adult profile is not a safe alternative because it removes the protections you just configured.
Can you block GTA VI chat and multiplayer?
Yes, the console family systems can restrict the main routes by which a child communicates or plays online, although exact labels can change with system updates and the game’s online implementation.
| Control | PS5 approach | Xbox Series X|S approach |
|---|---|---|
| Voice and text communication | Use Communicating and User-Generated Content to restrict party chat and messages. | Use Communication & multiplayer to choose who can communicate by voice or text. |
| Invitations | Restrict communication and review invitations through the child’s family permissions where available. | Choose who may send invitations in Communication & multiplayer. |
| Player-created content | Restrict viewing and sharing through Communicating and User-Generated Content. | Use content restrictions and communication settings; manage additional approvals in the Xbox Family Settings app. |
| Multiplayer | Use the child’s available online and communication restrictions; verify the result in the game while signed in as the child. | Set whether multiplayer is allowed in Communication & multiplayer. |
| Cross-network play | Check the current child-account and game permissions before enabling online play. | Set whether cross-network play is allowed in Communication & multiplayer. |
Blocking communication does not necessarily block every online feature, and blocking multiplayer does not replace the age filter. Treat age, communication, user-generated content, multiplayer, and cross-network permissions as separate decisions.

Use the platform’s family spending controls rather than relying on a verbal promise. Decide whether the child may make no purchases, may spend a fixed allowance, or must request approval for each transaction. Keep receipts and notifications visible to the adult manager.
- PS5: review spending settings in Family Management for the child account and test the purchase flow while signed in as that child.
- Xbox: use the family controls or Xbox Family Settings app to manage spending and approvals, then confirm the child cannot purchase through the adult profile.
A platform setting can limit authorization, but it cannot explain the value of a virtual item or prevent a child from asking another household member to approve it. Write down who may approve purchases, the maximum amount, and whether recurring or subscription charges are permitted.

What age rating should you use?
There was no confirmed final ESRB rating for GTA VI in the official information available for this guide. Rating categories can also differ by region. Check the live ESRB entry or the rating authority used in your country immediately before launch, then set the console to that age or lower.
Do not treat the release date as proof that the rating is final. The PlayStation Store listing currently gives November 19, 2026, and both platform listings warn that online features can have additional account, internet, fee, or service requirements. Store descriptions and menu labels can change before release.
Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
GTA VI is missing or blocked
- Confirm that the child is using the child profile, not an adult profile.
- Check the age level and the game’s current regional rating.
- On Xbox, remember that a restricted child account may be unable to access age-restricted content.
- Confirm that the platform account region matches the applicable region.
- If an adult approves access, retest all communication and spending settings afterward.
Online features do not work
- Verify that the child has the required PlayStation or Xbox account arrangement.
- Check internet access and any required Rockstar Games account registration.
- Review multiplayer, communication, cross-network, and user-generated-content permissions separately.
- Check whether the feature requires an additional fee or another platform condition.
The child can still receive messages or invitations
- Reopen the account’s communication settings and confirm they were changed for the child, not the adult.
- Check both console-level and game-level social options.
- Sign out and back in with the child profile so the updated permissions are loaded.
A purchase still appears possible
- Test from the child profile rather than the family manager profile.
- Remove unnecessary saved payment methods from the child’s purchasing path.
- Check approval, spending, and notification settings in the relevant family-management surface.
- Ask the platform account holder to review any unexpected transaction immediately.
PS5 and Xbox: which control system fits your household?
| Decision point | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| Where setup starts | Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management | Settings > Privacy and online safety |
| Age restriction | Age level and game/content restrictions | Numerical age scale connected to rating categories |
| Communication | Communicating and User-Generated Content settings | Communication & multiplayer settings |
| Multiplayer and cross-network decisions | Verify the current child-account and game permissions before enabling online play | Dedicated choices for multiplayer and cross-network play |
| Management app | Family Management on the console | Xbox Family Settings app plus console controls |
| Individual game approval | Use the family manager’s age and content decision | Xbox Family Settings supports individual game approvals |
| Time and spending | Review play-time and spending settings in family controls | Manage play time, spending, approvals, and notifications in family controls or the app |
Neither platform is automatically safer. The better choice is the one whose family manager will actually review settings, respond to approval requests, and check the child’s online behavior.
Make a household rule before enabling online play
Write a short rule the child can understand and the adults will enforce consistently. Include:
- which days and times GTA VI may be played;
- whether online play is allowed and with whom;
- whether voice chat is prohibited, limited to known friends, or reviewed together;
- what to do when a stranger asks for personal information;
- that passwords, address, school, phone number, and photographs are not shared;
- that suspicious messages, bullying, sexual content, threats, or requests for money should be reported and shown to an adult;
- who approves purchases and the maximum amount;
- what consequence follows if the rule is bypassed.
Keep the child’s account credentials private from friends and siblings, enable platform notifications that help you notice changes, and revisit the agreement as the child’s age and online experience change.
Recheck everything at launch
Before November 19, 2026, verify the live regional rating, storefront description, account requirements, and current console menu labels. After installing GTA VI, test the child account again rather than assuming the pre-release configuration carried over. Recheck after major game, console, or family-settings updates, because ratings, online features, and permission labels can change.

The safe default is a separate child account with the age filter set conservatively, communication and user-generated content restricted, multiplayer and cross-network play disabled until explicitly approved, spending controlled by an adult, and a defined play-time schedule. Relax one control at a time only when you can explain why it is appropriate and confirm the result on the child’s profile.
