Use two layers of controls: first, put your child on their own child account in the Windows family group and set Microsoft Family Safety limits; second, configure the game or launcher account for chat, content, multiplayer and purchases. A Windows screen-time limit does not automatically change settings inside Steam, Epic, Roblox or another service.
Before changing anything, identify the Windows login your child uses and the service that launches the game. The exact menus can vary by Windows release, account age, country and platform, so confirm the labels shown in your accounts.
Start by identifying the child account and game service
Parental controls are attached to an account, not merely to a computer. If a child plays while signed in to a parent’s adult Windows profile, Microsoft Family Safety cannot reliably apply child-account rules to that activity. Create or use a separate Windows login for the child, add it to your Microsoft family group, and have the child launch games from that login.

Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit says, “It is critical that you set up their account as a child account so you can use the parental controls correctly.” The toolkit recommends adding the child through Xbox Family Settings or the Microsoft Family Safety portal. Default settings are influenced by the date of birth on the child account; Microsoft also recommends checking the settings manually for your family rather than assuming the defaults are suitable.

Checklist before you begin
- Confirm the child has a separate Windows login and knows its password or sign-in method.
- Check that the login is listed as a child member in your Microsoft family group.
- Record the game’s launcher or service: Steam, Epic, Roblox or another publisher platform.
- Know which devices the child uses. A game installed on more than one Windows PC can create multiple entries in Family Safety.
- Have the parent account available for approval requests and purchase notifications.
If the game is not covered below, open the publisher or store’s official family-safety or parental-control documentation. Look specifically for controls for communication, age-rated content, multiplayer, playtime and spending; Windows does not own those settings.
Set a Windows device schedule in Microsoft Family Safety
A device schedule controls when the child may use a Windows device. It is broader than a game limit: it can restrict the computer even when the child is doing homework, browsing or using another application. Use it when you want a defined daily window for the PC itself.
- Sign in to the Microsoft Family Safety portal with the parent account that manages the family group.
- Select the child’s profile, then choose the Windows device or Windows platform.
- Open the screen-time or device-schedule area. The support instructions provide a schedule or time allowance for each day.
- Set the permitted start and end times, or the daily allowance, for each day of the week. Keep school nights and weekends separate if that matches your household routine.
- Save the schedule and check that the correct child and device are selected. Repeat for each Windows device the child uses.
Microsoft’s screen-time guidance also notes that Xbox time counts while the person remains signed in. If the child has finished playing, remind them to sign out rather than leaving an account active, so subsequent use is counted against the intended person.

Set a separate limit for one game or app
A per-app or per-game rule is narrower than a device schedule. It can allow the child to use the PC for schoolwork while limiting a particular game to a defined number of hours and permitted periods.
- In Microsoft Family Safety, select the child.
- Open the Windows controls and choose Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits.
- Find the game in the list. If it appears more than once because it is installed on multiple devices, identify the listing for the intended PC before editing it.
- Choose the game and set the daily time allowance and the hours during which play is permitted.
- Apply the same rule to every day, or tailor different limits and allowed windows by day.
- Save, then check the child’s account view to confirm that the rule is attached to the correct title.
Device schedules and app limits are independent controls. A child could be within the device’s allowed hours but still have exhausted the game’s daily allowance, or have game time available but be outside the device schedule.

There is an important boundary: Microsoft Support states, “Time limits do not work on websites.” A browser version of a game, a web game or time spent watching game content in a browser is therefore not covered by an app/game limit. Use the broader device schedule, the service’s own controls or both when browser activity matters.
Choose the correct platform-level controls
Windows controls access to the device and selected installed applications. The launcher or game account controls what happens inside the service: library access, age ratings, communication, multiplayer, purchases and sometimes reports. Use both layers where the service supports them.

Configure Steam Families for a Steam game
Steam Families is the current Steam family feature; it replaced the older Family View and Steam Family Sharing instructions. Configure it from the parent and child Steam accounts rather than relying on a Windows time limit alone.
What Steam Families can provide
- Child access permissions for the games and features the family allows.
- Playtime limits and playtime reports.
- Restrictions for Store, community and chat features.
- Approval requests when the child wants more time or access to a restricted feature.
- Child-account recovery support.
Practical setup sequence
- Sign in to the parent Steam account and create or join the family group using Steam Families.
- Add the child’s Steam account as a child member, not as an adult account.
- Review the games the child can access and remove titles that are not appropriate for the child’s age or your household rules.
- Open the family controls for playtime, reports, Store, community and chat. Set each restriction separately; allowing a game does not necessarily allow its social features.
- Leave approval requests enabled if you want the parent to authorize extra time or a feature unlock.
- Test the child account’s view by asking the child to sign in and confirm which games and communication tools are visible.
Steam’s available options can change, so use the current Steam Families labels shown in the account rather than reproducing legacy Family View paths found in older guides.
Configure Epic controls for Fortnite, UEFN and Epic activity
Epic provides controls for Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), along with account-level settings for communication, age ratings and payments. The child must use the same Epic account for the limits to follow them across devices.

Time, schedule and reports
- Set daily time limits and specific play windows for Fortnite and UEFN.
- Use the weekly time view or reports to see usage patterns.
- Remember that an account-based limit follows the child’s Epic account across devices. A device or console restriction can impose an additional, stricter limit.
Content and communication
Review the age-rating restrictions and communication settings independently. A time allowance does not decide who can contact the child, whether voice or text communication is available, or which age-rated content can be opened.

Epic’s payment PIN protects Epic payment methods covered by that setting. It does not control payments made through Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, and it does not cover V-Bucks purchases processed outside the covered Epic payment flow. Epic’s support guidance says that, for Epic Games purchases on PC, parents should consider removing stored payment methods. That reduces the chance of an unintended charge but does not replace reviewing the child’s account and purchase permissions.
Check the age-rating examples and paid-random-item options displayed in your region; Epic notes that some settings vary by country.
Configure Roblox parental controls
Roblox uses a linked-parent model. The parent links their Roblox account to the child’s account, then manages the child from the parent account.
Link the accounts and open controls
- Sign in to the parent Roblox account and complete the parent-link process for the child’s account.
- On desktop, open Settings.
- Select Parental controls, then choose the child’s profile.
- Review each available category and save changes as you go.

- Content maturity levels.
- Allowing or blocking individual experiences.
- Chat and party settings.
- Friend management.
- Visibility and private-server options.
- Spending limits and purchase notifications.
- Daily screen-time limits.
Roblox says that controls change with age. From age 13, children manage their own screen-time and blocking settings, and spending limits no longer apply. Roblox spending settings use local currency and have exceptions for some consoles; the monthly limit also excludes gift-card redemption.

Chat settings cover experience chat and direct chat, but Roblox notes that creator-added chat features may not be covered. If an experience provides its own communication system, inspect that experience’s controls as well.
Review purchase controls by payment route
“Block purchases” is not one universal switch. First identify where the transaction is processed:
- Windows or a PC store: use that store’s family approval, password or payment-method controls.
- Game account: use the game publisher’s PIN, spending limit or approval workflow.
- Console account: configure the console family settings separately, even if the game account is the same.
- Gift cards or game currency: check whether the service excludes them from its spending limit.
For Epic, the payment PIN does not cover other stores or V-Bucks spending, and removing stored PC payment methods is an additional safeguard. For Roblox, verify the age rule, local-currency behavior and gift-card exception before treating its spending limit as comprehensive.

After saving the rules, review the child’s actual experience rather than stopping at the parent dashboard.
- Sign in to the child’s Windows account and confirm that the expected device schedule is active.
- Launch the game and verify that the per-game allowance appears to apply to the correct installation.
- Check which games, age-rated content, multiplayer options and chat channels are visible.
- Attempt a purchase only if your household permits a controlled test; otherwise inspect the approval or PIN prompt without completing payment.
- Ask the child to identify what happens when time expires and how to request more time.
- Review the displayed age, country or region and linked accounts. Age- and region-dependent options can differ from examples in older instructions.
Recheck settings after a game update, launcher change, new device or birthday. Microsoft specifically advises manually checking family settings, and services can change labels or age rules over time.

Troubleshoot common failures
The limit does nothing
- Confirm the child is using the child Windows login, not a parent’s adult profile.
- Check that the Microsoft family group contains the same account that is signed in on the PC.
- Make sure you edited the correct game listing when multiple devices are shown.
- If the child is playing through a browser, remember that Microsoft says app/game limits do not work on websites.
- Sign out and back in on the child account so the latest policy can synchronize.
The child can still chat or join multiplayer
That feature is controlled by the game or store account. Revisit Steam Families, Epic communication settings or Roblox chat and party settings; a Windows time rule cannot change service-specific social permissions.
A purchase bypasses the expected PIN or limit
Identify the payment route. The transaction may have gone through another store, a console account, a gift card or excluded game currency. Remove stored payment methods where the platform recommends it and enable approval requirements on every relevant account.
The child sees different options after turning 13
Roblox explicitly changes several controls at age 13, including screen-time and blocking management and spending-limit applicability. Reopen the parent dashboard and read the current age-specific explanation instead of assuming the previous rules remain.

The safest setup is usually layered: a child-specific Windows account, a device schedule, a per-game limit where needed, and the launcher’s own communication, content and purchase controls. Each layer covers a different boundary, so none should be treated as a substitute for the others.
