On PS5, create a PlayStation family, add the child, then open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child and set Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. The default is 0, and purchases on a child account use the family manager’s wallet. PlayStation also supports web and mobile management. An official Xbox “Approve child purchases” support result exists, but the available page content does not expose verified menu paths or purchase-limit behavior, so Xbox instructions should not be guessed.
What you can configure today
PlayStation provides a documented, account-based setup for PS5 parental controls and child-account spending. The controls are configured for each child in a family, rather than being a single console-wide switch. In addition to purchases, PlayStation exposes separate settings for age-based game and content access, communication, privacy, and playtime.
Xbox has an official support area titled “Approve child purchases.” However, the support result available for this guide did not show the instructions themselves. It is therefore not possible to state a current Xbox console path, mobile path, default spending behavior, or in-game-purchase scope reliably. The Xbox section below identifies exactly what remains to be confirmed instead of presenting inferred steps as fact.

Use a parent or family-manager account
PlayStation requires a parent to create a family and add the child as a family member before parental controls can be configured. The child should use a separate child account; changing settings on the adult account does not create child-specific limits.

Start with the adult account that should remain responsible for the family. The family manager relationship matters because documented PlayStation Store purchases made on the child account draw from that manager’s wallet. If two adults use the console, agree on which account owns the family and which person will review requests, wallet funding and limits.
Decide what the spending rule should be
Choose whether the child should be unable to buy PlayStation Store content, or whether a controlled monthly allowance is appropriate. Because the monthly limit starts at zero, doing nothing leaves child-account PlayStation Store spending disabled through that setting. If you intend to permit purchases, set a deliberate amount rather than treating the default as an accidental allowance.
A zero limit is useful when you want to discuss every purchase first or when the child should have no store spending. A nonzero limit is an allowance, not a promise that every purchase request will be suitable. Pair it with age, communication, privacy and playtime rules, and review the amount whenever the child’s circumstances change.

You may need to select the correct child account in Family Management. Keep the child signed in to the intended account so you can test the result without confusing an adult account with the child account. A local PS5 profile that is not linked to the intended child account will not give you a reliable test of account-based controls.
Plan a short verification test
Before handing the console back, note which account you edited, which limit you chose and whether you changed other categories. If the child was playing during the change, plan for a sign-out and sign-in. Test with the child account, because an adult account can have different permissions and wallet behavior.
Set up a child family member on PS5
1. Create the family and add the child
Start with the parent account and create a PlayStation family. Add the child as a family member. This family relationship is the prerequisite for the child-specific controls described below. If you have more than one child, add each child’s account separately; family controls are selected per child.
2. Open Family Management
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Choose Family Management.
- Select the child whose settings you want to change.
- Choose the parental control you want to configure.
The selected child matters: controls are attached to that account, so repeating the process for another child is necessary if each child needs a different rule. Do not assume that changing one child’s profile changes siblings’ profiles as well.

3. Review the account before saving changes
Check the child’s name or account identifier shown in Family Management before editing. This simple check prevents a common mistake: setting an allowance on the wrong family member and then testing with a different profile. Write down the intended rule if another adult will maintain the account later.
Set the PS5 monthly spending limit
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Select Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the amount you want that child account to be able to spend during a month, or leave it at 0 to allow no spending through this control.
PlayStation describes the limit as a monthly amount for the child account. The documented default is 0; it is not an automatic recommendation or a temporary trial allowance. If the child should be allowed to buy, deliberately replace zero with the amount your household has agreed to.
Apply the same careful process for every child: select the account, inspect the current value, choose the new amount and then verify the result. Keep in mind that the setting is account-based, so using the console as a shared household device does not make the allowance apply to every profile.
Understand who pays for a child’s PlayStation Store purchase
When the child buys PlayStation Store content on the child’s account, payment is taken from the family manager’s wallet. The child does not need an independently funded wallet for that documented purchase flow. The monthly limit controls how much the child account may spend from that family-managed funding arrangement.
This arrangement makes two checks important: confirm that the correct adult is the family manager, and review the limit for every child account. A zero limit prevents the documented child-account PlayStation Store spending flow; changing it creates an allowance backed by the family manager’s wallet.
Because the funding source is the family manager’s wallet, review the wallet and payment arrangements separately from the child’s allowance. A spending limit is not a substitute for checking which adult account is responsible for charges. Explain to the child that the limit concerns the child account and that the adult wallet remains the funding source.

- Age-based access: restrict games and other content according to the child’s age settings.
- Communication: manage whether the child can communicate through supported PlayStation features.
- Privacy: control how the child’s account interacts with other players and services.
- Playtime: set and manage limits on when or how long the child can play.
These categories do not replace the monthly spending setting. For example, a playtime restriction does not establish a purchase allowance, and a spending limit should not be treated as an age or communication filter.

That order is not a required menu sequence; it is simply a way to make sure a financial setting is not mistaken for a complete safety plan.
Manage PS5 controls from the web or a phone
PlayStation lists two remote management options in addition to the PS5 menus:
- Account Management on the web: use the parent account’s online account-management area to manage family settings.
- PlayStation Family app: the app is described as a way to manage spending and playtime, age restrictions, and certain requests from a child.
Remote management is useful when the child is using the console and the adult is elsewhere, or when an adult prefers a phone or browser to a controller. Sign in with the parent account and confirm the child account before making a change. The app is described by PlayStation as free. No physical accessory or additional device is required for the setup itself.
Availability and labels can change, so use the current PlayStation account or app interface associated with your region. If a setting appears different on the web, phone and console, compare the selected family member and allow the account session to refresh before assuming the rule failed.
Make sure a PS5 change has taken effect
PlayStation says these controls are linked to the account. If you change a setting while the child is playing, have the child sign out and then sign back in. This refreshes the account session so the new control can take effect.
If you test a spending rule, test it while signed in to the child account, not the family manager’s account. An adult account can have different permissions and funding behavior, which can make a correctly configured child limit appear not to work. Record the result and the account used if another adult needs to troubleshoot later.

Do not treat a successful test on one transaction type as proof that every payment route is covered. The documented scope is PlayStation Store content purchased on a child account. Test and review any other service according to that service’s own account and payment controls.

If a game or service presents a payment route that is not the documented PlayStation Store child-account purchase flow, treat it as a separate case and check that service’s own account and payment controls. - The exact Xbox console menu path.
- The exact Microsoft account or mobile-app path.
- Whether the control is a spending cap, an approval gate, or both.

The comparison is intentionally asymmetric. PS5 can be configured from the documented path above, while the Xbox feature name alone is not enough to establish a safe setup.
