You can sell paid subscriptions from a website in three different ways: use an ecommerce platform with an AI Builder site in agentic mode for native subscription plans, link a manual-mode site to recurring Stripe payments, or use subscription software on WordPress. The right steps depend on which kind of site you have. The documented native setup requires Stripe; PayPal is not supported for those plans.
Choose the setup that matches your website
| Website setup | How recurring billing works | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| AI Builder in agentic mode with an ecommerce platform | Native subscription products managed through the ecommerce platform | Stripe is required. Buyers need an account, and the documented setup has no free-trial option. |
| AI Builder in manual mode | A Stripe recurring product linked from the site using a Payment Link or Stripe Checkout | Billing is handled separately by Stripe; the site’s built-in product types do not provide native recurring billing. |
| WordPress | A WooCommerce subscription or membership extension | Renewal automation and plan-management features depend on the plugin edition and payment integration. |
These are separate implementations, not settings you can switch on in every store. Confirm the current feature set in your account and check Stripe’s supported countries before choosing the native route.
Set up native subscriptions with AI Builder agentic mode
The documented native route is for an AI Builder project in agentic mode connected to an ecommerce platform. The process starts with the store and Stripe connection, then adds the site as a sales channel.

- In Store Manager, open Sales Channels and add your AI Builder agentic-mode site.
- In the AI Builder chat, ask it to create a subscription-based product.
- Review the generated plan details, then manage the product in Store Manager.
Manage plans and subscribers
The subscription-management documentation places plans in the Product list and subscriber status and history in a dedicated Subscriptions area. Customers can use a self-service portal to view invoices and manage or cancel their subscriptions.

Check the buyer and payment requirements
- Payment provider: Stripe is required for native subscription payments. PayPal and other providers are not supported for this workflow.
- Customer account: Buyers must create an account.
- Free trials: The documented native setup does not offer a free-trial option.
- Country availability: Check Stripe’s supported countries before setting up payments.
The platform announced on June 15, 2026 that AI Builder charges “0% platform fees,” with subscription revenue going to users minus Stripe’s standard processing fees. That is a product statement, not an independent fee comparison; confirm the current terms before relying on it.
Use Stripe Payment Links on a manual-mode site
Standard AI Builder manual mode does not offer native recurring billing through its built-in product types. Instead, create the recurring product in Stripe and place a Stripe Payment Link on your site. Stripe Checkout is also an external option.

- Accepts all payment types: NFC/CTLS, mobile wallets, EMV and magstripe
- Supports a variety of third-party apps through Verifone’s Merchant Marketplace
- Optional features, such as dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 BLE
- Supports Verifone’s estate management solution for remote device management, value-added services, updates and diagnostics
- Set up the recurring product and billing terms in Stripe.
- Generate a Stripe Payment Link, or configure Stripe Checkout for the product.
- In your site editor, add a button or text link and set its destination to the Stripe URL.
- Preview and test the link so customers reach the intended checkout page.
With this approach, Stripe handles recurring billing separately from the store interface. Do not expect a manual-mode store to manage native subscription plans or subscriber records in the same way as the Ecommerce agentic-mode route.
Use WooCommerce subscriptions on WordPress
If your site runs WordPress, you can add subscription functionality through WooCommerce extensions. A December 17, 2025 tutorial demonstrates YITH WooCommerce Subscription; the official WooCommerce Subscriptions extension and membership plugins are other options.

Configure a subscription product
- Install and configure WooCommerce and the subscription extension you choose.
- Create a product and enable its subscription product setting.
- Choose the billing frequency and subscription term supported by the plugin.
- Review the payment gateway and renewal behavior, then publish the product.
Verify renewals and plan controls
Renewal automation is not guaranteed by choosing a subscription plugin alone. The tutorial says the free YITH version supports automatic renewals through PayPal Payments for WooCommerce. Without that integration, or when an initial order used another payment method, renewals may be manual. The tutorial also describes the premium version as supporting other automatic-renewal gateways and notes that the free version has limitations around pausing, upgrading, and downgrading plans.
Plugin features and gateway compatibility can change by version. Before launch, check the plugin vendor’s current documentation and pricing, test a complete renewal flow, and confirm whether customers can change or cancel plans themselves.

Do not confuse newsletter signups with paid subscriptions
A website builder’s Subscribe form collects email-list signups; it does not set up recurring payments or paid access. Form documentation describes viewing or exporting submissions and embedding third-party subscription forms with custom code. Use a payment or ecommerce setup for paid recurring billing, and use a newsletter signup form only to collect email subscribers.
