Yes, OpenVPN can listen on TCP port 80 and use a domain name. Configure the server for TCP with port 80, point a DNS name such as vpn.example.com to the server’s public address, forward TCP 80 through any router or firewall, and use that hostname and port in each client profile. Port 80 must be free, or you must deliberately configure OpenVPN port sharing.
The domain name only helps clients find the server. It does not replace OpenVPN’s certificate-based TLS authentication, firewall rules, NAT forwarding, or client certificates.

A typical deployment has four network layers:
- A client device runs OpenVPN and connects to
vpn.example.comon TCP port 80. - DNS resolves that name to the public IPv4 address of your router, cloud instance, or VPN server.
- A router or cloud firewall accepts inbound TCP 80 and forwards or allows it to the OpenVPN host.
- The OpenVPN process listens on TCP 80, completes a TLS handshake, authenticates the client certificate, and assigns a VPN address.
If the VPN server has its own public address, no home-router NAT rule is needed, but host and cloud firewalls still have to permit the connection. If the server is private behind a gateway, the gateway must forward TCP 80 to its private address.
Prerequisites and design decisions
- A server with a stable public IPv4 address, or a gateway capable of forwarding inbound traffic to the server.
- A domain or DNS zone where you can create records.
- OpenVPN installed on the server and clients.
- A certificate authority, one server certificate and key, and a separate certificate and key for every client. Giving every client its own certificate makes revocation and auditing possible.
- Administrative access to the router, cloud security group, perimeter firewall, and host firewall.
- A plan for any existing web service that already uses TCP 80.
Port 80 is valid because OpenVPN allows ports from 1 through 65535. UDP 1194 is the conventional default, not a requirement. TCP 80 can be useful on networks that permit plain web traffic while blocking unfamiliar ports, but TCP transport is less efficient than UDP for a VPN and port 80 is commonly occupied by HTTP servers.

Step 1: Prepare OpenVPN and its certificates
Install a current OpenVPN release using your operating system’s supported package method. Create or import the normal public-key infrastructure: a protected certificate authority, a server certificate and private key, and one client certificate/private-key pair per device. Keep private keys readable only by the account or service that needs them, and store the certificate authority key offline when possible.
Do not treat the DNS name as authentication. A hostname can point to your server, but only the TLS configuration and certificate policy determine whether a client is trusted. Configure certificate verification so clients verify the server certificate and the server verifies each client certificate.
Step 2: Configure the server for TCP port 80
Open the server configuration file used by your distribution and set the transport and listener explicitly. A minimal example is:
port 80
proto tcp-server
dev tun
ca ca.crt
cert server.crt
key server.key
server 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0
keepalive 10 120
persist-key
persist-tun
Use the certificate, key, and network values appropriate for your installation. Some OpenVPN versions use proto tcp in a server configuration rather than proto tcp-server; follow the syntax accepted by the installed version. The important requirement is that the server uses TCP and the same port number that clients use.
Choose a VPN address pool that does not overlap with networks commonly used by clients. If you need access to private LANs or the internet through the tunnel, add the corresponding routes and forwarding or NAT rules. Those routing choices are separate from the public listener and do not change the DNS record.

Check which process owns port 80 before starting OpenVPN. On a Linux server, a command such as ss -ltnp | grep ':80' identifies listeners. Two independent processes cannot bind the same IP-address and port combination.

Step 3: Create the DNS name
At your DNS provider, create an A record such as:
| Record | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
vpn.example.com |
Public IPv4 address of the gateway or server | Lets clients locate the VPN endpoint |
vpn.example.com AAAA |
Public IPv6 address, only if IPv6 is correctly routed and filtered | Provides an IPv6 path when supported |
Do not publish an AAAA record merely because the server has an IPv6 address. If the firewall, OpenVPN listener, or routing is not ready for IPv6, clients may prefer the broken IPv6 path and appear unable to connect. If your public address changes, update the A record promptly or use a reputable dynamic-DNS mechanism. Protect the DNS account with multifactor authentication and monitor record changes.
DNS changes are cached according to the record’s TTL. Test from an external network with your operating system’s DNS lookup utility and confirm that the returned address is the one currently assigned to your gateway.
Step 4: Forward and permit TCP 80
Behind a router or NAT gateway
- Give the OpenVPN host a stable private address, preferably with a DHCP reservation or static assignment.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for inbound TCP port 80 on the public interface to TCP port 80 at the OpenVPN host’s private address.
- Allow the same traffic in the host firewall. A router rule alone does not override a local firewall drop.
- If the VPN server must route traffic to a LAN or the internet, enable IP forwarding and add the required return routes or masquerading rules.
In a cloud or hosted network
Allow inbound TCP 80 in the cloud security group or network ACL, then permit it in the operating system firewall. If a separate load balancer or edge firewall owns the public address, configure its forwarding rule to the OpenVPN instance. Confirm that no upstream HTTP proxy is terminating or rewriting the connection; OpenVPN needs a transparent TCP path.
Firewall scope
Limit administrative services to trusted management addresses. Opening TCP 80 should expose only the OpenVPN listener, not a management panel, database, or unrelated service. Keep outbound and inter-network rules as narrow as your routing design permits.

Step 5: Match the client profile
Every client profile must use TCP, the DNS name, and port 80. A typical profile fragment is:
client
dev tun
proto tcp-client
remote vpn.example.com 80
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
remote-cert-tls server
ca ca.crt
cert client-device.crt
key client-device.key
Some releases accept proto tcp instead of proto tcp-client. Use the form documented by the installed client. Keep the CA, client certificate, and private key matched to that device, and verify that the profile does not contain an old IP address or port. If you provide multiple remote lines, understand that the client may try each endpoint in sequence.
Import the profile into the client application, protect the private key, and avoid sending an unencrypted profile through an untrusted channel. If a device is lost, revoke its certificate rather than merely deleting the DNS name.
Step 6: Restart and verify the server
Validate the configuration with the OpenVPN version’s built-in check if available, then restart the service using your operating system’s service manager. Service names differ by package; common Linux installations use an instance name such as openvpn-server@server. Immediately inspect the service status and log.

Port conflicts: what to do when a website already uses port 80
HTTP servers commonly bind TCP 80. You have three practical choices:
Move the web service
Reconfigure the web server to listen on another port or on another IP address. You can keep both services on the same machine when each process has a distinct local address, but they cannot independently bind the same address and port. Update reverse-proxy rules, redirects, health checks, and firewall policies when you move the site.
Use a separate public address
Assign an additional public IP and bind the website and OpenVPN to different addresses, both using port 80. This avoids protocol multiplexing but requires an address that is correctly routed and permitted by the provider.

Use OpenVPN port sharing
OpenVPN provides a port-share host port option that can pass non-OpenVPN web traffic to another service. For example, OpenVPN might listen publicly on port 80 while forwarding ordinary web requests to a local web server on port 8080:
port-share 127.0.0.1 8080
The OpenVPN manual describes this feature as designed for HTTP and HTTPS. It is protocol-aware forwarding, not a general-purpose reverse proxy. Test redirects, virtual hosts, WebSockets, large uploads, HTTP/2 behavior, TLS termination, logging, and failure handling in your exact topology. Never assume that arbitrary TCP protocols can share the listener.

When port sharing is enabled, keep the forwarded web service bound to a protected local address and ensure that administrative interfaces are not accidentally exposed through the public listener.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Testing from outside your network
- Disconnect the test device from the server’s LAN. Use a cellular connection or another independent network.
- Resolve
vpn.example.comand verify the expected public address. Test both A and AAAA behavior if you publish both. - Check whether TCP 80 reaches the gateway from the outside. A reachable socket is only a transport test, not an authentication test.
- Start the OpenVPN client and watch the server log for a TLS handshake, certificate verification, and tunnel assignment.
- Confirm that the client receives an address from the VPN pool, then test the specific private routes or internet egress you intended to provide.
- Repeat after a router reboot, public-address change, or DNS update to verify that the forwarding and name-resolution design survives normal operations.
Choosing TCP 80, TCP 443, or UDP 1194
| Option | Reachability | Service conflict | Transport behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UDP 1194 | May be blocked by restrictive networks | Usually low because web servers use TCP | Efficient VPN transport with no TCP-over-TCP head-of-line issue | Preferred when the network permits it |
| TCP 443 | Often allowed because it is the standard HTTPS port | Can conflict with an HTTPS service | More overhead than UDP, but commonly usable through restrictive firewalls | Usual fallback when UDP is filtered |
| TCP 80 | May pass networks that allow plain HTTP but block other ports | Frequently conflicts with an HTTP service | TCP-over-TCP effects and head-of-line blocking can increase latency | Specific compatibility cases where port 80 is reachable and available |
The conventional OpenVPN UDP port is 1194, but the software accepts any port from 1 through 65535. A restrictive network that permits HTTPS commonly makes TCP 443 a better fallback than TCP 80 because 443 is the normal encrypted-web port. Neither choice makes OpenVPN traffic into ordinary browser HTTP; the connection remains an OpenVPN TLS session.
Security and maintenance
- Use certificate-based TLS authentication and a distinct certificate for every client.
- Protect the certificate authority and private keys with filesystem permissions, encrypted backups, and controlled administrative access.
- Keep OpenVPN, the operating system, router firmware, and firewall software updated.
- Apply least-privilege rules to inbound TCP 80 and to VPN-to-LAN traffic.
- Do not expose administrative interfaces on the same public listener or through an overly broad port-sharing rule.
- Monitor authentication failures, certificate expiration, DNS changes, and unexpected changes to port-forwarding rules.
- Document the public hostname, port, address pool, routes, certificate-revocation process, and recovery contact.
Using a domain name does not provide encryption by itself. OpenVPN’s TLS certificates provide server identity and client authentication; DNS merely maps a name to an endpoint and can be altered if the DNS account is compromised.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Client reports timeout | Wrong DNS address, missing NAT rule, or blocked firewall | Resolve the hostname externally, verify the public address, check the gateway’s TCP-80 forward, then inspect cloud and host firewall logs. |
| Connection is refused | No listener on the forwarded address or port conflict | Run a socket-listening check on the server, inspect the OpenVPN service status, and stop or relocate the process already bound to port 80. |
| TCP connection opens but no TLS handshake appears | Traffic reaches another service, an incorrect forward, or protocol interference | Confirm the NAT destination and listener address. If port sharing or a proxy is present, test with it disabled or reconfigured. |
| TLS certificate verification fails | Wrong CA, expired certificate, hostname-policy mismatch, or incorrect client key | Compare the profile’s CA and client files with the server’s PKI, check validity dates, and revoke and reissue compromised or mismatched credentials. |
| VPN connects but internal hosts are unreachable | Missing routes, IP forwarding, return routes, or NAT | Inspect the client route table, server forwarding settings, LAN return paths, and firewall rules between the VPN pool and destination network. |
| IPv6 clients fail while IPv4 works | Broken or incomplete AAAA routing | Remove the AAAA record until IPv6 listener, firewall, forwarding, and return routing are all tested. |
| Website breaks after enabling port sharing | Unsupported HTTP behavior or incorrect destination port | Verify the port-share host and port, test redirects and upgraded protocols, and move the website to a dedicated address when compatibility matters. |
Operational checklist
- Record the exact public hostname and current A or AAAA records.
- Confirm TCP mode and port 80 in both server and client configurations.
- Verify one-to-one client certificates and a documented revocation method.
- Check listener ownership before every change to a web server or VPN service.
- Test from an external network after firewall, NAT, DNS, or certificate changes.
- Monitor logs for repeated failed authentication and unexpected source addresses.
- Prefer UDP 1194 when policy permits; use TCP 443 or TCP 80 only for a clear reachability requirement.
Conclusion
OpenVPN on TCP port 80 works when the server and clients agree on TCP and port 80, DNS points the chosen hostname to the public endpoint, and every NAT and firewall layer forwards the connection correctly. The main complication is port ownership: move an existing HTTP service, use a separate address, or carefully configure HTTP/HTTPS port sharing. For most installations, UDP 1194 remains the efficient default and TCP 443 is the more common restrictive-network fallback; TCP 80 is a compatibility option rather than a universal best choice.
