Set up OpenLDAP on an Ubuntu or Debian VPS by installing slapd and ldap-utils, choosing a permanent DNS-based suffix, loading a small base directory with LDIF, and then administering it with authenticated LDAP commands. Keep the dynamic cn=config database separate from directory entries, require trusted TLS before permitting application binds, delegate routine privileges through ACLs, and prove that both configuration and data backups can be restored.
What you need before installing OpenLDAP
OpenLDAP is the open-source LDAP implementation used in Ubuntu. A VPS is a suitable place for a small directory, but directory service work is sensitive to naming, certificates, network exposure, and recovery procedures. Decide these items before running the installer:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A stable VPS hostname and DNS record, such as
ldap01.example.com. Clients must use a name that will also appear in the server certificate. - An Ubuntu or Debian release with package management working and administrative access through
sudo. - A permanent directory suffix, normally based on your domain, such as
dc=example,dc=com. - A plan for the administrator DN, application service accounts, delegated operators, and emergency access.
- A firewall policy for LDAP ports. Do not expose an unencrypted service to the public Internet merely because the package starts successfully.
- A backup destination separate from the VPS, with encryption and a documented restore target.
The suffix is part of every distinguished name (DN). Changing it later is disruptive, so settle it before importing useful entries.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install slapd ldap-utils
The package creates a minimal working configuration, a database instance, and an administrator DN. During installation, set the directory administrator password and choose the DNS domain that corresponds to the suffix you intend to keep. The resulting administrator DN will normally be based on that suffix, for example cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com.
Correct a suffix before loading data
If the initial answers were wrong and the directory does not yet contain useful data, re-run the package configuration:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd
Ubuntu warns that changing the suffix discards the existing database. Treat this as a rebuild operation, not a harmless rename. Export anything you need first, or make the change immediately after installation while the database is still disposable.
Set client defaults only after naming the server
Once the host and suffix are final, set defaults in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf so tools do not silently use package examples:
BASE dc=example,dc=com
URI ldap://ldap01.example.com
These defaults do not replace explicit security options in scripts. For administrative work, specify the intended URI, bind identity, and authentication method in the command or in a protected automation environment. Avoid putting passwords on command lines because shell history and process inspection can expose them.
Understand OpenLDAP’s two configuration planes
OpenLDAP has two different kinds of LDAP data, and confusing them is a common cause of unsafe changes.
Recommended Free Tools
The dynamic configuration database: cn=config
cn=config stores server behavior: listeners, TLS paths, schemas, indexes, logging, and database access rules. It is itself an LDAP tree and is normally changed with ldapmodify, not by editing a static text file while the daemon is running.
On the local VPS, root-level administration commonly uses SASL EXTERNAL over the local domain socket:
sudo ldapsearch -Q -LLL -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -b cn=config
The command uses the operating-system privileges associated with the local socket. Keep this method restricted to trusted local administrators.

The directory data tree
Your suffix, such as dc=example,dc=com, contains directory entries: organizational units, people, groups, and service identities. Use an explicit bind DN and a TLS-protected URI for remote operations. A configuration change made under cn=config does not create a user entry under your suffix, and importing a user LDIF does not configure TLS or logging.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Create the base directory with LDIF
LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) gives you a repeatable, reviewable representation of entries and changes. Create a file named base.ldif and adapt the names to your organization:
dn: dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: top
objectClass: dcObject
objectClass: organization
dc: example
o: Example Organization
dn: ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: People
dn: ou=Groups,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: Groups
Every entry needs a unique DN, and its object classes determine which attributes are legal. Keep LDIF under version control, but remove passwords, private keys, and other secrets before committing it.
Import the base entries
Use an authenticated, encrypted connection. This example binds as the directory administrator and prompts for the password:
ldapadd -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f base.ldif
The command should report each added DN. If an entry already exists, LDAP returns an “already exists” error; inspect the tree before deciding whether to modify or delete anything.
Verify the result
Search the suffix and request only the attributes you need while testing:
ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
-b 'dc=example,dc=com' '(objectClass=*)' dn
Check that the base entry and both organizational units appear. Use a non-production copy when experimenting with schemas or ACLs.
Routine administration with LDAP commands
Most day-to-day work can be expressed as small LDIF change sets. Review the DN and the target attribute before applying a change.
Add entries with ldapadd
Create an LDIF file containing the complete new entry, including its object classes and required attributes, then run ldapadd against the intended suffix. Keep one logical change per file when possible so a failed deployment is easy to diagnose and roll back.

Modify attributes with ldapmodify
A modify LDIF identifies the entry and operation. For example, replacing an organization description would use this pattern:
dn: ou=People,dc=example,dc=com
changetype: modify
replace: description
description: Staff directory
Apply it with the same authenticated, TLS-protected connection:
ldapmodify -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W -f change.ldif
Use add when an attribute is absent, delete when removing a value, and replace when the complete desired value set is known. Separate multiple operations in one LDIF record with a line containing a single hyphen.
Delete cautiously with ldapdelete
Deletion is irreversible unless you have a tested backup. Before using ldapdelete, search for group memberships, application references, and child entries. Delete children before a parent organizational unit when the server requires an empty parent:
ldapdelete -x -H ldaps://ldap01.example.com
-D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com' -W
'uid=olduser,ou=People,dc=example,dc=com'
Use ldapsearch as an inspection tool
Searches are also how you verify ACL behavior. Test the same base, scope, and filter as the application will use. A successful administrator search does not prove that a restricted service account can read the attributes it needs.
Manage schemas deliberately
A schema defines the structure and data types of object classes available in the LDAP tree. It also defines attribute syntax and matching rules, so a schema error can prevent an entry from being added or can make searches behave differently than expected.
Ubuntu’s documentation demonstrates adding a converted LDIF schema directly to cn=config. The local EXTERNAL method looks like this:
sudo ldapadd -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:///
-f /etc/ldap/schema/corba.ldif
Do not add a custom schema casually on a production VPS. First test it on a disposable instance, confirm that every application-required object class and attribute is present, and check matching rules and indexes for the searches you will run. Record the schema version alongside your deployment files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSchema removal is not a routine cleanup task. Existing entries may depend on the object classes and attributes, and applications may assume their matching behavior. Plan a migration before deployment rather than relying on an emergency deletion.

Design ACLs and administrative identities
Start with a written access matrix rather than a single broad rule. At minimum, consider these identities:
- Anonymous clients, if any anonymous discovery is genuinely required.
- Authenticated users reading their permitted directory information.
- Application service accounts limited to the searches and attributes each application needs.
- Help-desk or delegated operators who may reset or update a defined subset of attributes.
- Full directory administrators responsible for configuration and recovery.
Grant only the attributes and operations each identity needs. Keep the directory manager or root DN for break-glass work, and create named delegated accounts for routine administration so actions can be attributed to a person or service.
ACL ordering matters: an earlier rule can prevent a later rule from taking effect. Review the complete ordered policy, not just the line you are editing. Test reads, searches, adds, modifies, and deletes with every role against a non-production copy. Include both an allowed operation and a deliberately denied operation in the test record.
Secure LDAP with trusted TLS
LDAP credentials and directory data should not cross the network in plaintext. Use either StartTLS on the normal LDAP connection or LDAPS, depending on client support, and migrate clients before rejecting unencrypted binds.
Prepare certificate files
Obtain a certificate whose DNS name matches the hostname clients use, including the subject alternative name when applicable. The slapd process must be able to read the certificate, private key, and any intermediate CA chain. Protect the private key so only the service account can read it; clients need the issuing CA, not the private key.
Set TLS paths in cn=config
Create a change file such as tls.ldif:
dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcTLSCertificateFile
olcTLSCertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ldap.example.com.pem
-
replace: olcTLSCertificateKeyFile
olcTLSCertificateKeyFile: /etc/ssl/private/ldap.example.com.key
-
replace: olcTLSCACertificateFile
olcTLSCACertificateFile: /etc/ssl/certs/ca-chain.pem
Apply it locally with EXTERNAL authentication:
sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f tls.ldif
After changing permissions or restarting the service, verify that the daemon can open every path. A certificate that exists but is unreadable by slapd produces a TLS failure just as surely as a missing file.
Test StartTLS before changing clients
Use a CA file that can validate the server certificate:
LDAPTLS_CACERT=/etc/ssl/certs/ca.pem
ldapwhoami -H ldap://ldap.example.com -ZZ -x
The -ZZ option requires StartTLS to succeed; it will not silently continue without encryption. Confirm the hostname, certificate SAN, CA chain, and firewall path if negotiation fails.
Enable LDAPS when clients require it
Debian documents enabling ldaps:/// on port 636 through the SLAPD_SERVICES setting, followed by a slapd restart. Use port 389 for LDAP with StartTLS or port 636 for LDAPS according to client compatibility. Do not assume that opening both ports is safer; expose only the services you intend to support and enforce encryption for every remote bind.

Enable statistics logging for a focused investigation
Ubuntu documents this dynamic logging change:
dn: cn=config
changetype: modify
replace: olcLogLevel
olcLogLevel: stats
Save it as logging.ldif and apply it locally:
sudo ldapmodify -Q -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f logging.ldif
sudo journalctl -eu slapd.service
Use more verbose logging temporarily when diagnosing a difficult bind, schema rejection, ACL denial, or TLS negotiation. Statistics logging can be noisy, so return to a lower level after the incident and retain the relevant journal entries with the incident record.
Work through common symptoms
- Connection refused or timeout: verify that
slapdis running, the VPS firewall allows the selected port, the DNS record points to the VPS, and the service is listening on the expected interface. - TLS hostname error: connect using the DNS name covered by the certificate SAN, not an unrelated IP address or alias.
- Unknown CA or incomplete chain: install the correct CA chain on the client and ensure the server presents required intermediates.
- Permission denied on a certificate: check ownership and mode on the certificate, key, and parent directories for the user running
slapd. - Invalid credentials: confirm the exact bind DN, suffix, password, and whether the client is accidentally using an old URI or an unencrypted connection.
- Insufficient access: test the same operation with a deliberately limited account and review ACL order; administrator success does not demonstrate application permission.
- Object class or attribute error: inspect the entry’s schema requirements and confirm that the required schema is loaded before changing the LDIF.
- Cannot modify cn=config remotely: use the local
ldapi:///EXTERNAL path or a specifically delegated configuration identity rather than exposing unrestricted configuration access.
Back up and restore OpenLDAP properly
A data-only export is not a complete OpenLDAP backup. Preserve both the directory data under your suffix and the cn=config database, which contains listeners, schemas, TLS settings, indexes, logging, and ACLs.
Define a backup set
- Directory entries and their attributes.
- The complete dynamic configuration, including schema and access rules.
- The certificate and CA-chain handling procedure. Keep private keys protected and do not place them unencrypted in a backup repository.
- The OpenLDAP and distribution versions used to create the backup.
- Retention, encryption, off-host storage, and the person responsible for restore testing.
Schedule encrypted copies away from the VPS. Keep the LDIF and configuration artifacts free of passwords and private keys unless they are stored in a separately protected secret system.
Prove the restore, not just the backup job
- Provision an isolated VPS or other disposable environment with a compatible OpenLDAP and distribution version.
- Restore the configuration and data backups without exposing the test instance to production clients.
- Verify the suffix and expected entries with
ldapsearch. - Test application binds, required searches, group membership, and each ACL role’s allowed and denied operations.
- Verify that TLS certificates, private-key permissions, CA chains, listener ports, and DNS assumptions can be recreated from the runbook.
- Record the restore duration, failures, and corrective actions, then update the procedure.
A backup that has never been restored is an unverified copy, not a recovery plan.
Deployment choices to document
Before production use, write down the decisions that affect compatibility and recovery:
| Decision | Options to evaluate | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system packaging | Ubuntu or Debian package defaults | Distribution release, OpenLDAP version, package changes |
| Encrypted transport | StartTLS or LDAPS | Client support, selected ports, certificate DNS names, CA issuer |
| Administrative access | Local-only configuration access or controlled remote access | Use of ldapi:///, delegated identities, firewall restrictions |
| Backup scope | Centralized configuration plus directory data or data-only export | Included databases, key and CA handling, retention, restore target |
| Privilege model | Delegated ACLs or one manager DN | Access matrix, ACL order, review owner, test results |
| Service topology | Single node or replicated directory | Replication design, monitoring owner, failover procedure |
Also record the suffix, DNS names, certificate issuer, backup retention, restore target, monitoring owner, and the exact ports exposed by the VPS firewall. These details turn a working installation into an operable service.
Quick Recap
Production readiness checklist
- The permanent suffix was selected before useful data was imported.
slapdandldap-utilsare installed, and package example values have been replaced.- The
cn=configtree and the directory data tree are backed up separately and restored together in testing. - Base entries, organizational units, users, and groups are managed through reviewed LDIF.
- Required schemas were tested on a disposable instance and documented.
- Named service and delegated accounts replace routine use of the manager DN.
- ACLs have been tested for every role, including denied operations and rule ordering.
- StartTLS or LDAPS validates a trusted certificate, and plaintext binds are rejected after migration.
- Firewall rules expose only the required ports, and certificate and key permissions are correct.
- Logging can be raised for diagnosis and reduced afterward.
- An isolated restore has verified searches, application binds, group membership, and ACL behavior.
