To share Nintendo Switch Online, put every player’s Nintendo Account in the same Nintendo Account family group, then have an eligible adult in that group buy a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership. The subscription follows the accounts in the group, not the console: several profiles on one Switch are not automatically covered. A family group can contain up to eight Nintendo Account users. Start at Nintendo’s account website, invite or create each account, confirm that every person has accepted, and then purchase the family plan.
What you need before starting
Have the email address for each existing Nintendo Account ready, and decide which adult will administer the family group. The administrator controls invitations and membership changes, but does not have to be the person who pays for Nintendo Switch Online. An adult group member aged 18 or older can purchase the subscription.
- A Nintendo Account for every existing player. A child can instead be created during setup.
- Access to the email inbox attached to each invited account.
- Internet access and a browser for the Nintendo Account website.
- A payment method accepted in the purchaser’s region.
- The Nintendo Switch consoles that the players use. Members may use different consoles; they do not need to share one system.
Nintendo’s official explanation of family groups is available in What Is a Nintendo Account Family Group?. Regional account pages can use different labels or consent screens, so follow the wording shown for your country.
Create or open the Nintendo Account family group
1. Sign in as the group administrator
- Open the Nintendo Account family-group instructions and select the Nintendo Account website link.
- Sign in with the account that should administer the group.
- If the account is not already in a family group, choose Create family group. If a group already exists, open its member-management area and choose Add a member.
A family group is an account relationship managed online. Creating a local user profile on a Switch, or signing several people into the same console, does not create that relationship.

2. Invite an existing Nintendo Account
- Choose Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the email address registered to the person’s Nintendo Account. Use the address on that account, not an unrelated household email.
- Send the invitation. Nintendo emails the account owner a verification link.
An invitation is only pending until the recipient completes the acceptance process. The account is not covered merely because the administrator sent an email.
3. Have the invitee accept
- The invitee opens Nintendo’s invitation email and follows its verification link.
- They sign in to the invited Nintendo Account.
- They choose Join family group and confirm.
After acceptance, the account should appear in the administrator’s family-group member list. Nintendo describes this process, including assigning a role after consent, in How to Add Members to a Nintendo Account Family Group.
4. Create a child account when needed
If a child does not have a Nintendo Account, select Nintendo’s child-account creation option while adding a member. Complete the requested details and any parental-consent steps required in your region. The child account is placed in the family group after creation. Do not assume that the consent screens described for one country will be identical elsewhere; Nintendo changes the flow according to local law and account region.

Once all intended accounts are listed in the family group, an eligible adult who belongs to that group can purchase the subscription. The purchaser does not have to be the administrator. Nintendo states that a family membership provides Nintendo Switch Online service to everyone in the purchaser’s family group, up to eight Nintendo Account users; see Information About Nintendo Switch Online Family Memberships.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account of the adult who will pay.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online membership purchase page for your country or region.
- Select Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership, or select Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family Membership if that tier’s additional benefits are required.
- Review the displayed term, currency, renewal details and payment method. Prices and taxes are regional and can change, so use the amount shown in your account rather than a price quoted for another country.
- Complete the purchase and retain the confirmation email.

The membership is attached to the purchaser’s family-group coverage, not to one hardware unit. A member can sign in on a different Switch and still use the service while that account remains in the group.
How the eight-account limit affects setup
Nintendo’s family-group limit is eight Nintendo Account users, not eight consoles or eight local profiles. Count every adult and child account you intend to cover before sending invitations. If the group already contains accounts, review the member list first so you do not accidentally invite an unintended person or exceed the available places.
The account list is the source of truth for coverage. A household could have two people on one Switch and another person on a separate console, yet all three need their own Nintendo Accounts listed in the same family group. Conversely, several local users on one console do not become covered merely because they share hardware. Link each local profile to its owner’s Nintendo Account and check the online membership status with that account.
Choose the appropriate family tier
The standard Family Membership is the choice when the group needs the regular Nintendo Switch Online service. The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family Membership is a separate, higher tier with additional benefits. Nintendo’s support material does not make the family-group setup process depend on the tier: in either case, coverage is based on the purchaser’s family group and can include up to eight users.

Compare the benefits displayed for your country, the term, automatic-renewal information and total price at checkout. Do not use a price from another country or an old promotion to estimate the cost. If only some members want the higher tier, confirm the account coverage and local terms shown by Nintendo before purchasing; the family purchase applies according to Nintendo’s family-membership rules rather than being assigned to a single console.
What family membership does not combine
Family-group membership does not merge people’s Nintendo Accounts. Each person keeps their own account, game activity, settings, saves and My Nintendo activity. Nintendo specifically explains that family-group members’ My Nintendo points and activity are not combined. The family plan provides service eligibility; it is not a shared identity or a shared wallet.
This distinction also matters when someone changes groups. Leaving does not transfer that person’s account history into another member’s account. Their coverage ends when they leave unless they are covered elsewhere, and they may need a new invitation or an individual membership.
Confirm that every player is covered
Do this check immediately after purchase, especially if several invitations were sent:
- Return to the family-group management page and verify that every intended Nintendo Account appears as a member.
- Check that no invitation is still awaiting acceptance.
- On each player’s Switch, sign in to the Nintendo Account linked to that console user. Do not test with a different local profile.
- Open an online game or another Nintendo Switch Online feature and confirm that the account is recognized as covered.
- If a player uses more than one console, repeat the account check on the second system. The family plan covers the account wherever it signs in, subject to Nintendo’s service requirements.
A shared console is not proof of shared coverage. Each local profile must be linked to the Nintendo Account that is actually listed in the family group.
Understand family-group roles
The administrator manages who joins and leaves the group. Nintendo’s role guidance explains the available permissions in What Are the Different Roles in a Nintendo Account Family Group?. Nintendo’s setup instructions state: “Once the Nintendo Account owner has agreed, their account will appear in your family group and you can assign them a role.”
Roles are separate from payment. A group member aged 18 or older can buy the family membership even when another adult is the administrator. Before buying, agree who will maintain the subscription and who will handle invitations, because the purchaser’s departure can interrupt everyone’s coverage.

What happens if someone already has an individual membership?
Do not buy a second individual plan simply to join the family group. Nintendo’s US support guidance says an active individual membership and a family membership do not add their remaining periods together; the account receives the longest applicable period. Nintendo also says an account covered by an active family membership cannot buy or redeem an individual membership code. The account can still be added to the family group while its individual term is active. When the individual period ends, family-group coverage can continue as long as the family membership remains active.
Leaving, changing or replacing members
If the purchaser leaves
If the account that bought the family membership leaves the family group, other members can lose Nintendo Switch Online benefits, including Save Data Cloud backup, until coverage is restored. The departing account also loses its family coverage. Arrange a replacement purchase by another adult group member before removing the current purchaser, and verify the new coverage afterward.
If another member leaves
A member who leaves no longer receives the family membership’s benefits. Their Nintendo Account, game saves and My Nintendo activity are not merged into another member’s account. They must be invited to a group again or obtain an individual membership, depending on the situation.
Changing the administrator
Use the family-group role controls rather than creating duplicate groups. Review Nintendo’s current role rules before transferring responsibility, because not every role can perform every change. Keep at least one trusted adult able to manage invitations and subscription continuity.
Family membership is not the same as parental controls
Nintendo Switch Online determines which Nintendo Accounts receive online-service benefits. It does not automatically configure age limits, play-time limits or communication restrictions.
Account-level controls
Some restrictions and supervision settings are managed through Nintendo Account family-group tools. A parent or guardian account can supervise a child account and manage the permissions available to it. These settings follow the account relationship, not the family membership payment.
Console and app controls
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls also has console settings and a smart-device app. Nintendo’s guide, How to Set Up, Adjust, or Remove Parental Controls on Nintendo Switch, covers the setup paths. The app provides features such as play-time limits and gameplay history. Nintendo warns that many controls apply system-wide, so a restriction configured on a console can affect everyone who uses that console, not only the child’s profile.

Share supervision with another adult
Eligible parent or guardian accounts in the family group can share responsibility through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Follow Nintendo’s shared-responsibility instructions and give access only to trusted adults. Adding a second supervisor does not change who pays for Nintendo Switch Online.

Common setup problems and fixes

Privacy and account-safety checks
- Send invitations only to the email addresses of people you intend to add.
- Ask invitees to verify the Nintendo Account name and email shown after signing in before they accept.

- Remove former household members from the family group when they no longer need access, then confirm who remains covered.
- Keep the purchaser’s email account secure because subscription receipts and account-recovery messages go there.

Other members can lose Nintendo Switch Online benefits, including Save Data Cloud backup, until another eligible adult restores coverage. The departing purchaser also loses family coverage, so arrange replacement coverage before changing the group.

Do family members share My Nintendo points?
No. Family-group membership does not merge members’ My Nintendo points or activity. Each Nintendo Account retains its own account information and history.
Can an account with an individual membership redeem another code?
Nintendo says an account covered by an active family membership cannot buy or redeem an individual membership code. An active individual and family membership do not stack their remaining periods; the account receives the longest applicable period.

- The group knows who will maintain the subscription if the original purchaser leaves.
