To enable HTTP/2 in NGINX, use a certificate-backed HTTPS server, confirm that the installed build contains ngx_http_v2_module, then place http2 on; in the TLS virtual server. In current NGINX releases the configuration is split into listen 443 ssl; and a separate http2 on; directive. Test the configuration, reload NGINX, and verify that a client negotiated HTTP/2 over HTTPS.
What you need before enabling HTTP/2
HTTP/2 support is supplied by NGINX’s ngx_http_v2_module. The module was introduced in NGINX 1.9.5, but it is not built by default in a source compilation. A source build must include the --with-http_v2_module configuration option. Distribution packages may already include it, so check the running binary instead of assuming that the package name guarantees support.

Check the NGINX build
Run the version-and-build command as the account that manages NGINX:
nginx -V 2>&1
Review the configure arguments in the output for --with-http_v2_module. Some systems install the binary outside the shell’s default path; use the full path to that binary if nginx is not found. If the argument is absent, install a package that includes HTTP/2 support or rebuild NGINX with the documented option. A configuration can be syntactically correct and still fail to start HTTP/2 when the module is missing.

Prepare TLS
Browser HTTP/2 deployment normally uses HTTPS. You need a certificate covering every hostname in the TLS server’s server_name list and the corresponding private key. NGINX’s SSL module provides the ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key directives. Keep the private key readable only by the account or group that must access it; do not make it world-readable merely to work around a permission error.
HTTP/2 over TLS uses ALPN (Application-Layer Protocol Negotiation). NGINX documents ALPN support for this path with OpenSSL 1.0.2 and later. The OpenSSL version linked to the running NGINX matters, not just the version installed elsewhere on the operating system. If ALPN is unavailable, a browser can complete TLS but select HTTP/1.1 instead.
Plan the virtual servers
- Port 80 should normally redirect requests to the HTTPS URL.
- Port 443 should contain the certificate, private key, hostname, document root, and HTTP/2 directive.
- The HTTPS server must be the server that receives the hostname being tested; a different default TLS server can otherwise answer the request.
- You need permission to edit the active configuration and to test and reload the NGINX process.
Use the current HTTP/2 syntax
In current releases, enable TLS on the listen directive and enable HTTP/2 separately:
listen 443 ssl;
http2 on;
The standalone http2 directive is valid in the HTTP and server contexts and appeared in NGINX 1.25.1. Older examples commonly combine both settings as listen 443 ssl http2;. Newer NGINX releases deprecate that form. A deprecation warning does not mean HTTP/2 is unsupported; it means the protocol setting should be moved to its own server-level directive while listen retains the TLS setting.
Do not place http2 on; in a location block. Put it in the HTTPS server block, where it applies to requests handled by that virtual server. If you maintain several TLS virtual servers, enable it independently in each server that should offer HTTP/2.
Configure NGINX for HTTP/2 step by step
1. Install or build a suitable NGINX binary
Install NGINX from your operating system or an official NGINX package source, then run nginx -V and confirm the HTTP/2 module argument. If you compile from source, include the option shown below among your normal configure options:
./configure --with-http_v2_module
A source build may also require the usual compiler, PCRE, zlib, and OpenSSL development dependencies for the other modules you select. Keep the existing configuration options when rebuilding; adding only the HTTP/2 option while dropping options used by your current installation can remove features unexpectedly. After installation, run nginx -V against the binary that the service manager actually starts.

2. Obtain and protect the certificate and key
Place the certificate chain and private key at stable paths. The certificate file should contain the server certificate and, where required by your certificate authority, the intermediate chain. The key must match that certificate. Restrict ownership and mode so that only the NGINX master process or its required service account can read it.
For a hostname such as example.com, the relevant files in the example below are:
/etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem— the certificate chain presented to clients./etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem— the matching private key.
The filenames are examples; use the paths supplied by your certificate-management process. Renewals must replace the files atomically or otherwise leave NGINX with a complete, readable pair before a reload.

Create an HTTP virtual server that sends clients to the same host and URI over TLS:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
return 301 https://$host$request_uri;
}
This server does not enable HTTP/2; it exists to move clear-text requests to the TLS endpoint. The $host variable preserves the requested hostname, while $request_uri preserves the path and query string. Test that both names resolve to this NGINX instance before relying on the redirect.
4. Create the HTTPS server
Use the separate listen and http2 directives:
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
http2 on;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
root /var/www/example;
index index.html;
}
The listen 443 ssl; line binds the TLS listener. The http2 on; line allows NGINX to advertise HTTP/2 for that server. The certificate directives identify the chain and key, and the root and index directives provide the sample site content. Add your existing application, proxy, access-log, and error-log directives inside this server block as needed; HTTP/2 does not replace those request-handling settings.
Ensure the certificate names cover the host you use for testing. If the client requests a name that is not listed, NGINX may select another TLS virtual server, presenting a different certificate and potentially a different protocol configuration.

5. Ensure the file is included
NGINX reads a main configuration file that normally includes one or more directories of virtual-server files. Put the two server blocks in a file that is actually included by the active configuration. Layouts differ between operating systems and package sources, so verify the include path in the main configuration rather than copying a distribution-specific symlink command blindly.
If another server already listens on port 443 for the same address, merge the settings or remove the conflict. Only one process can bind the same address and port combination unless the listener is deliberately configured for sharing.
6. Test the configuration
Before changing the running service, ask NGINX to parse the complete configuration:
nginx -t
Use the same binary and configuration path used by the service manager if they differ from the shell default. A successful test reports that the syntax is valid and the configuration test is successful. Treat every error as a deployment blocker. Common causes include a misspelled directive, a certificate path that does not exist, a key that the NGINX master cannot read, an unclosed brace, or two servers trying to bind the same listener.
7. Reload NGINX
Reload only after the test succeeds. A common signal-based command is:
nginx -s reload
Many operating systems instead expose a service-manager reload action. Use the reload operation appropriate for the way NGINX was installed. A reload asks the master process to start workers with the new configuration while allowing existing workers to finish current requests. If the reload fails, inspect the NGINX error log and service-manager status, then correct the reported issue before retrying.
Verify that HTTP/2 was actually negotiated
Check in browser developer tools
Open the site in a current browser, open Developer Tools, select the Network panel, and enable the protocol column if it is hidden. Reload the page and inspect the document request. The protocol should be shown as HTTP/2 (browser labels vary). Confirm that the request is HTTPS and that the certificate is valid. A redirect response on port 80 is expected; inspect the final HTTPS request when checking the negotiated protocol.

Check with an HTTP client
Use a client that reports the negotiated HTTP version. For example, a curl build with HTTP/2 support can display the protocol selected for the response:
Recommended Free Tools
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{http_version}
' --http2 https://example.com
A result of 2 indicates HTTP/2. If curl reports that its build lacks HTTP/2 support, use a different client or the browser’s protocol column; that client limitation does not prove that NGINX lacks the module. Do not use an insecure certificate-bypass option for the normal test, because a valid chain is part of the deployment you are verifying.
Distinguish support from negotiation
Three separate conditions must line up: the NGINX binary must contain ngx_http_v2_module, the TLS connection must offer ALPN through the linked OpenSSL, and the selected virtual server must have http2 on;. If any one is missing, the connection can fall back to HTTP/1.1 or fail before an application response is returned.
Troubleshoot common failures
The configuration test says the directive is unknown
An error such as an unknown http2 directive usually means the running binary lacks the HTTP/2 module or the command is testing a different NGINX installation than the service. Run nginx -V using the exact binary path from the service definition and look for --with-http_v2_module. Install a package with the module or rebuild with --with-http_v2_module, then repeat the test.
NGINX warns that listen ... http2 is deprecated
Replace the older combined form:
listen 443 ssl http2;
with:
listen 443 ssl;
http2 on;
Keep both lines in the same HTTPS server block. The change addresses configuration syntax; it does not require a different certificate or a separate HTTP/2 port.
The browser still shows HTTP/1.1
- Confirm that the browser reached the intended hostname and TLS virtual server, not a default server with different settings.
- Check that
http2 on;is inside that server block and that the file containing it is included. - Run
nginx -Vand verify--with-http_v2_module. - Check the OpenSSL version linked to NGINX. ALPN support for the documented TLS path is available since OpenSSL 1.0.2.
- Verify that the certificate chain is valid and that the private key matches the certificate.
- Retest after a successful reload; editing a file without reloading leaves workers on the old configuration.
The certificate is wrong or the TLS handshake fails
When the wrong certificate appears, inspect the request hostname, DNS destination, and the order and names of TLS server blocks. NGINX chooses a server during the TLS handshake before it can process an HTTP request, so a hostname mismatch can send the request to a different block. When the handshake fails, check certificate and key readability, file paths, chain completeness, and the error log. A key that does not correspond to the certificate will prevent a correct TLS setup even though the configuration syntax parses.
Reload reports a permission or path error
Use absolute paths for certificate and key files and verify them as the account that launches the NGINX master. A file can exist but still be inaccessible because a parent directory denies traversal. Correct ownership or group membership narrowly, preserving private-key confidentiality. If a certificate-renewal process changed the path, update the configuration or restore the expected file before testing again.

Port 80 redirects, but HTTPS serves the wrong site
Inspect DNS records and the port-443 listener first. Then list the active server names from the complete configuration and look for duplicate or overlapping names. The redirect proves only that port 80 reached an NGINX process; it does not prove that the same hostname reaches the intended HTTPS server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an installation approach deliberately
Package installation, an official repository package, and a source build can all provide HTTP/2, but they differ operationally. The important comparison is whether the binary contains the module, whether its OpenSSL integration provides ALPN, how certificates are renewed, and who controls reloads and logs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Deployment choice | Module availability | TLS and OpenSSL considerations | Certificate management | Operational control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operating-system package | Check the package’s nginx -V output; availability varies by distribution and release. |
Uses the OpenSSL integration selected by the distribution; verify ALPN capability. | Usually integrates with the system’s certificate paths and renewal tools. | Service-manager commands, packaged logs, and distribution update policy govern reloads. |
| Official NGINX repository package | Confirm the installed build includes --with-http_v2_module. |
Check the OpenSSL version linked to that package, especially on older systems. | Choose a renewal process that can safely replace the chain and key and trigger a reload. | Provides a predictable package lifecycle while retaining normal NGINX configuration control. |
| Source build | Explicitly add --with-http_v2_module during configuration; it is not enabled by default. |
You control the OpenSSL development libraries and resulting linkage, so verify ALPN after installation. | You must define file locations, permissions, renewal hooks, and reload procedures. | Maximum control over compile options and paths, with responsibility for upgrades, logs, and service integration. |
Do not select a source build solely because an example uses it. A package that already includes the module is usually simpler to patch and maintain. A source build is useful when you need compile-time control, a particular OpenSSL linkage, or a feature absent from the available packages.
Certificate renewal and ongoing operations
Renew without leaving mismatched files
HTTP/2 negotiation depends on a functioning TLS handshake, so certificate renewal is part of HTTP/2 operations. Install the renewed certificate chain and matching key, confirm that both files are readable by NGINX, run nginx -t, and reload only after the test passes. Replacing one file while leaving the other from a different certificate can make the next reload fail.
Monitor reloads and logs
Keep the NGINX error log and service-manager status available during changes. A successful shell command that edits a file is not evidence that workers adopted it; the reload must complete. After renewal or a configuration change, make an external HTTPS request and inspect the certificate and negotiated protocol.
Keep old and new syntax consistent
Mixed examples are a common maintenance problem. Standardize new server blocks on listen 443 ssl; plus http2 on;. When upgrading an older configuration, convert each TLS server deliberately and remove the deprecated parameter so warnings do not hide more serious errors.

What HTTP/2 changes—and what it does not
HTTP/2 changes the protocol used between a client and NGINX after TLS negotiation. It does not automatically change your upstream application protocol, document root, proxy rules, certificate authority, or port numbers. Existing HTTP request handling continues inside the server block. The visible deployment differences are the certificate-backed TLS endpoint, ALPN negotiation, and the HTTP/2 enablement directive.
HTTP/2 is not guaranteed merely because a browser supports it. The client and server negotiate a protocol for each TLS connection. A valid certificate with no ALPN support, a module-less NGINX binary, an incorrectly selected virtual server, or an unreloaded configuration can all leave a client on HTTP/1.1. Verify the actual connection rather than inferring the result from the configuration file.
Quick Recap
Quick deployment checklist
- Run
nginx -Vand confirm--with-http_v2_module. - Use an OpenSSL linkage that provides ALPN; NGINX documents support from OpenSSL 1.0.2.
- Obtain a valid certificate chain and matching private key for every tested hostname.
- Protect the private key and verify that the NGINX master can read it.
- Redirect port 80 to HTTPS if clear-text requests should not remain on the site.
- Configure
listen 443 ssl;andhttp2 on;in the intended TLS server. - Ensure the file is included and that no listener conflict exists.
- Run
nginx -twith the same binary and configuration used by the service. - Reload NGINX through the appropriate signal or service-manager action.
- Confirm HTTP/2 in browser developer tools or an HTTP client that reports the negotiated version.
- If negotiation fails, check virtual-server selection, ALPN, certificate/key matching, module presence, and reload status in that order.
