Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
To run NemoClaw on a Linux VPS, provision at least 4 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM and 20 GB of free disk space, install Node.js 22.19 or newer with npm 10 or newer, make sure Docker is available and running, then launch NVIDIA’s current installer and finish the interactive onboarding wizard. A 16 GB RAM VPS with 40 GB free disk is a safer choice because Docker, k3s and the OpenShell gateway can run concurrently during setup.
The Node minimum changed with NemoClaw v0.0.82, released July 14, 2026. Older setup articles that specify Node 20 or an earlier Node 22 release are out of date for the current requirement.
What you need before installing NemoClaw
NemoClaw is installed as a server-side environment rather than as a single lightweight binary. The installer configures its runtime and supporting services, so VPS sizing matters during both installation and normal operation.
| Resource | Minimum | Recommended for a smoother setup | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 4 vCPUs | 4 or more vCPUs | Several services can start together during provisioning. |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | Docker, k3s and the OpenShell gateway may run at the same time. An 8 GB host can be killed by the operating system when memory pressure peaks. |
| Disk | 20 GB free | 40 GB free | Leaves room for container images, logs, updates and working data. |
These figures are stated prerequisites in NVIDIA’s NemoClaw documentation. They are not benchmark results. If your provider offers a choice, select 16 GB RAM and 40 GB of free disk; the extra memory is generally more valuable than adding CPU beyond four cores for the initial installation.

Operating system
Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04 are the versions commonly named by third-party installation guides. NVIDIA’s official operating-system list was not included in the available documentation, so confirm that your chosen Ubuntu image is supported by the current NemoClaw prerequisites page before creating a production server. Use a current 64-bit image and apply its security updates before you begin.
Network access and account privileges
- Use an account that can run administrative commands with
sudo. The NemoClaw installer itself does not require you to run it as root, but Docker installation and service configuration may require elevated privileges. - Allow outbound HTTPS so the installer can download packages, images and components.
- Keep your VPS provider’s emergency console available. It is useful if a package install changes SSH configuration or if the host runs out of memory.
Choose cloud or local inference before you size the VPS
Cloud inference
Cloud inference is the default path described for NemoClaw. It does not require a GPU on the VPS; a modern general-purpose machine can use a provider’s hosted model after you enter the provider credential during onboarding. You still need enough RAM for the local gateway and container services.
Local inference
Local inference keeps model execution on infrastructure you control, but third-party NemoClaw guides state that a suitable GPU is required. A basic CPU-only VPS that is adequate for cloud inference should not be assumed to support local inference. Confirm the model’s GPU, driver, VRAM and operating-system requirements separately before choosing this route.
Prepare the Linux VPS
- Create the instance. Choose at least 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM and 20 GB free disk. Prefer 16 GB RAM and 40 GB free disk for a repeatable installation and future updates.
- Connect over SSH. Use your provider’s documented SSH command and an administrative-capable user rather than logging in directly as root when possible.
- Update the base system. Apply the normal security updates for your Ubuntu release, then reboot if the provider or package manager requests it.
- Check the available resources. Before running the installer, confirm that the VPS reports at least four processors, 8 GB of memory and 20 GB of free space. If memory is tight, stop unrelated services; adding swap can prevent an immediate kill, but it makes provisioning slower.
Do not treat swap as a substitute for RAM in a busy production deployment. It can help an 8 GB machine survive a short setup spike, while 16 GB avoids much of that contention.
Install the required Node.js version
Current NemoClaw requires Node.js 22.19 or later and npm 10 or later. This minimum took effect in v0.0.82 on July 14, 2026.

- Install or enable a Node version manager such as
nvmusing its current official instructions. - Install the Node 22 release line and activate it in the current shell:
nvm install 22nvm use 22 - Check both versions:
node --versionnpm --version - Continue only when Node reports 22.19 or newer and npm reports 10 or newer. If the installer rejects the version, install a newer Node release through
nvm, activate it, and run the installer again.
Version managers are convenient on a VPS, but they also create a common PATH problem: a new shell may not yet know where the Node and NemoClaw executables were installed. Keep the shell initialization step in mind for after installation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Install and test Docker
Docker is the default Linux runtime. NemoClaw’s installer can install Docker, start its service and add your user to the docker group, but Docker setup may still need sudo.
- Install Docker using the current instructions for your Ubuntu release.
- Start and enable the Docker service if your package installation did not do so automatically.
- Test the daemon with
docker --versionanddocker info. - Run Docker as the intended NemoClaw user. If you receive a permission error, complete the Docker group setup and open a new login shell. When the installer specifically asks you to refresh group membership, run:
newgrp docker
A Docker permission failure normally indicates that the Docker setup or the current shell’s group membership needs attention; it is not usually a NemoClaw application error.
Get the NVIDIA credential
Default cloud inference requires an NVIDIA API key. Create or retrieve one at build.nvidia.com. Keys begin with nvapi-. Store the value in a password manager or another protected secret store, and do not put it in a public shell history, ticket or repository.
Run the official NemoClaw installer
NVIDIA’s installer command and flags can change as the release line changes. Open the current NemoClaw installation documentation and copy the Linux installer command exactly rather than reusing a command from an older blog post. Run it as your normal administrative-capable user, not as a root shell, unless the current documentation explicitly says otherwise.

Interactive installation
For a one-off VPS, run the current installer in its normal interactive mode. It may detect that Docker is missing, offer to install it, start the service and add your account to the Docker group. Follow those prompts, and use newgrp docker if the installer says the group change is not active yet.
Scripted or unattended installation
Set both required environment variables in the same shell before invoking the current installer:
export NEMOCLAW_NON_INTERACTIVE=1
export NEMOCLAW_ACCEPT_THIRD_PARTY_SOFTWARE=1
Then run the installer command from NVIDIA’s current documentation. The first variable disables interactive prompts; the second records acceptance of the installer’s third-party software terms. A non-interactive run still needs valid credentials and a functioning runtime, so test Docker and Node first.
Fix the command path if nemoclaw is not found
When installation completes but the shell says nemoclaw: command not found, the most likely cause is that your current shell has not loaded the Node version manager’s updated PATH.

Complete the onboarding wizard
NemoClaw onboarding is interactive even after the package and runtime installation succeeds. The wizard configures the agent, model provider, credentials and network policy.
- Select OpenClaw as the agent. This is the agent choice described in the current onboarding flow.
- Choose an inference provider. Select the provider you intend to use, then choose an available model.
- Enter the provider credential. For NVIDIA’s default cloud path, provide the API key beginning with
nvapi-. Paste it carefully and avoid surrounding spaces. - Skip optional web search and messaging on the first run. You can add those integrations after the base deployment is working. Skipping them reduces the number of external credentials and network permissions involved in the initial diagnosis.
- Accept the suggested network policy tier. Review the displayed policy and accept the suggested tier unless your security requirements call for a stricter choice.
If SSH disconnects or you stop the wizard, resume rather than starting over:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsnemoclaw onboard --resume
Verify the installation
First verify that the command is on your PATH by invoking nemoclaw and opening its built-in help. Then use the version-check procedure in the current NemoClaw CLI reference; the exact version command has changed enough that it should not be guessed from an older guide.
- Confirm that the CLI starts without a “command not found” error.
- Confirm that Docker is running as the same user that will operate NemoClaw.
- Confirm that onboarding completed and that the selected provider credential was accepted.
- Review the installer and service output for failed containers, repeated restarts or out-of-memory kills.
A successful command installation does not prove that inference is configured. The provider, model and credential must be accepted by the onboarding flow.

export NEMOCLAW_GATEWAY_RUNTIME=podman
Set that variable before running the installer, then follow the current Podman-specific instructions. Podman does not require the Docker CLI or Docker daemon. Choose it when your operational tooling, security policy or existing host configuration favors Podman; choose Docker when you want the default path and the broadest alignment with the installer’s automatic setup.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision | Docker | Rootless Podman |
|---|---|---|
| Default status | Default Linux runtime | Explicit provider choice |
| Daemon requirement | Docker service and CLI | No Docker daemon or CLI |
| Best fit | A new VPS or a team already using Docker | A host standardized on rootless Podman |
| Configuration | Usually no runtime variable needed | Set NEMOCLAW_GATEWAY_RUNTIME=podman before installation |
Troubleshoot the common failures
Installer rejects Node.js
Check node --version and npm --version in the same shell that launches the installer. If Node is below 22.19 or npm is below 10, activate a newer Node 22 release with nvm and retry. The v0.0.82 minimum is newer than requirements quoted by many earlier guides.
Docker permission denied
Check that the Docker daemon is running and that your user belongs to the Docker group. Open a new SSH session or run newgrp docker when requested, then retry the Docker test. Do not assume that adding the group changed permissions in an already-open shell.
nemoclaw is missing after installation
Refresh ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc, or start a new shell. Verify that nvm or fnm selected the same Node installation used during setup.
The VPS is killed or becomes unresponsive
Inspect memory usage and provider console logs. During setup, Docker, k3s and the OpenShell gateway can overlap. An 8 GB instance is at risk of OOM termination; stop unrelated workloads, add temporary swap if necessary, or resize to 16 GB RAM and retry.
Onboarding was interrupted
Reconnect to the VPS and run nemoclaw onboard --resume. Resume the existing flow instead of creating a second installation, then recheck the provider credential and network policy choices.
Quick Recap
Keep the deployment maintainable
- Record the Node.js and NemoClaw versions used for each server.
- Recheck NVIDIA’s release notes before upgrading. The current release line is fast-changing, and version requirements can move.
- Keep at least the recommended disk headroom so container images and logs do not consume the entire filesystem.
- Use a dedicated secret-management method for API keys and rotate a key if it appears in shell history or logs.
- Do not expose an administrative dashboard directly to the public internet without first reviewing the VPS firewall, authentication and TLS requirements for the current NemoClaw release.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your situation | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New Linux VPS and no existing container standard | Docker with cloud inference | It follows the default installer path and avoids GPU requirements. |
| Team already operates rootless Podman | Podman with NEMOCLAW_GATEWAY_RUNTIME=podman |
It avoids introducing a Docker daemon and matches the team’s runtime tools. |
| You need models to run on the server | Local inference only after validating GPU support | Local inference requires suitable GPU capacity; ordinary CPU VPS sizing is not enough. |
| Reliability matters more than the lowest monthly price | At least 16 GB RAM and 40 GB free disk | It reduces memory pressure while the gateway and supporting services run together. |
