To install NanoClaw, clone its official repository and run bash nanoclaw.sh in a regular terminal. The setup wizard prepares the required software, builds the agent container, and guides you through connecting a channel. For later changes, NanoClaw’s documented approach is code customization through a coding agent and repository skills—not editing a universal configuration file.
Check the requirements before installing
NanoClaw’s official site lists macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2 as supported environments. The stated requirements are Node.js 20 or later, pnpm 10 or later, Docker Desktop or Docker Engine, and a credential for Claude or Codex. Docker is the supported container runtime; the project does not list alternatives. See the official NanoClaw site for current requirements.
- Confirm that you are using one of the documented operating systems; Windows users should use WSL2.
- Make sure Docker is installed and usable from the environment where you will run the setup.
- If you are installing Node.js or pnpm yourself, meet the stated minimum versions.
- Have the credential for your chosen provider available.
Install NanoClaw from a terminal
The official quick start is to clone the repository, enter the checkout, and run the setup script directly:

bash nanoclaw.shRun the script in an interactive terminal, not from inside a Claude session. The project says setup needs interactive prompts and real shell input and output. The process prepares Node.js, pnpm, Docker, and a credential gateway, builds the agent container, and guides you through pairing a channel. Use the installer’s output as the first clue if a step fails; the official pages do not give one universal fix for every Docker, network, shell, or credential error.

Understand how NanoClaw customization works
NanoClaw describes customization as code changes rather than editing a general-purpose configuration file. You can ask Claude Code to change behavior, such as a trigger word, or use the repository’s /customize skill. Channel adapters and alternative providers may need to be added using skills such as /add-<channel>; do not assume every adapter is present in every checkout. The approach is described in the official repository.
- Describe the desired behavior and identify the relevant agent group, channel, or provider.
- Ask the coding agent to inspect your checkout and make the change, or use the applicable repository skill.
- Review the resulting diff and follow any dependency, registration, or rebuild instructions it provides.
- Try the original operation again in the same channel, group, and provider to check the change.
The documented approach does not establish a universal configuration key or file path for every customization.
Troubleshoot by locating the failing stage
First capture the NanoClaw version or commit, operating system, whether you are using WSL2, the setup or runtime stage, the channel and provider involved, and the exact error text. The release notes can matter: changes to gateways, default models, startup, and recovery may affect which instructions apply.

- Identify the boundary. Decide whether the error occurs during dependency setup, Docker or container building, provider authentication or gateway setup, host service startup, channel pairing or delivery, or agent access to a mounted path.
- Use the setup recovery path. If setup offers an automatic Claude Code diagnosis and recovery handoff, let it run. If that does not resolve the problem, the project FAQ suggests running
claudeand then/debug. - For runtime issues, ask a focused question. The README suggests asking Claude Code about scheduler activity, recent logs, or why a message did not receive a response. Include the captured version and error so the diagnosis has useful context.
- Check version-matched instructions. Compare any proposed recovery or upgrade step with the notes for your installed release; do not copy a migration or upgrade command from another version without confirming it applies.
- Repeat the failed operation. After changing something, test the same provider, channel, group, and operation that produced the original symptom.
If an agent cannot read a file
NanoClaw says agents run in isolated Docker containers and can see only explicitly mounted files. Check whether the required path is mounted and allowed before assuming the file itself is missing or unreadable.

If provider authentication fails
The project says provider credentials are routed through a credential gateway so agents do not hold raw API keys. Check the host-side gateway and credential setup when authentication fails. These boundaries help narrow the search; they do not establish that every file-access or authentication problem has the same cause. For details, consult the official documentation.
Check current release notes before upgrading
When checked on October 7, 2026, GitHub identified v2.4.0, published September 23, 2026, as the latest release. Its notes describe gateway installation changes, model and speed controls, a Mattermost channel, an updated OpenCode provider, and setup, restart, and delivery fixes. They also call out considerations for hand-merged forks and changes to default models. These details are version-specific and can change; check the official releases page before applying upgrade instructions.

Migrate from NanoClaw v1 without switching service too soon
The documented migration starts with a fresh v2 checkout and then runs bash migrate-v2.sh. The script looks for a sibling v1 installation, or you can point it to one with NANOCLAW_V1_PATH=/path/to/nanoclaw. It migrates state and selected channel data, then leaves judgment-dependent work to Claude Code.
