Yes—you can offer Google, GitHub, generic OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, and other supported sign-in methods on a self-hosted GitLab instance. GitLab uses OmniAuth, and each external identity service is configured as its own provider object. Register a separate application at each identity service, use the exact callback URL for that provider, add the provider definitions to your deployment configuration, apply the change, and test account linking and provisioning before enabling it for everyone.
How multiple providers work in GitLab
GitLab Self-Managed delegates external sign-in to OmniAuth strategies. The supported strategy list includes Google (google_oauth2), GitHub (github), generic OAuth 2.0, Azure v2, OpenID Connect (openid_connect), SAML and other strategies. A provider entry contains the strategy name plus that service’s client credentials and provider-specific arguments.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Each entry represents one external authentication service. Google and GitHub, for example, are two different providers with separate applications, secrets, scopes and callback paths. Repeating an entry for the same external authentication and authorization provider does not create two independent identities; GitLab’s identity model supports only one provider per unique external provider. If you need two directories that both speak OIDC or SAML, give each instance a unique provider name and label and point it at a different issuer or identity service.
What GitLab stores for a linked identity
When a user signs in through OmniAuth, GitLab records an external identifier (extern_uid) associated with the provider. Email matching, username claims and the provider name determine how the login is associated with a GitLab account. Changing the external application later can change those identifiers; plan a migration instead of assuming existing users will be recognized automatically.

Plan the provider set before changing configuration
- Classify each service. Decide whether it is Google, GitHub, generic OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML or another strategy in GitLab’s supported-provider matrix. Use the exact strategy/provider names expected by your GitLab version.
- Inventory the applications. For every service, record the client ID, client secret, issuer or discovery URL (for OIDC), scopes, claims and the exact redirect URI. Keep this inventory in a restricted location.
- Choose account policy. Decide whether a successful external login may create an account, whether newly created accounts are blocked pending administrator approval, whether provider-created users are marked external, whether accounts are linked by email and which profile fields may be synchronized.
- Prepare a recovery path. Keep a local administrator login available and test it before changing OmniAuth. A configuration error or an unavailable identity service should not lock every administrator out.
Register an application at each identity provider
Create a Google-registered application and obtain its client ID and client secret. Configure the redirect URI shown by the GitLab integration for the google_oauth2 provider. The URI must use the public GitLab host and the complete callback path; do not substitute a host-only redirect.
GitHub
Create an OAuth App at GitHub and record its client ID and secret. The callback must include the full GitLab path:
https://gitlab.example.com/users/auth/github/callback
Replace the host with your actual GitLab URL. A host-only URI or an incomplete path will cause the provider to reject the callback or return an OAuth error.
Generic OAuth 2.0 and OIDC
Record authorization, token and (for OIDC) discovery or issuer information, together with the scopes and claims GitLab will request. OIDC services normally need an issuer or discovery endpoint that is different for each identity service. Make sure the registered redirect URI exactly matches the callback generated for the unique GitLab provider name.
SAML
Register a separate SAML integration for each identity service. Each GitLab provider needs a distinct name, login-button label and callback URL. The callback path contains the matching provider name, so a provider called saml_2 must not use the callback assigned to saml.
Configure Omnibus Linux packages
For an Omnibus installation, edit /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb. Provider definitions go in gitlab_rails['omniauth_providers']. The following is an illustrative shape for Google and GitHub; use the current provider-specific arguments and callback values required by your GitLab version and identity services.

Do not publish real IDs or secrets. Put secrets in the deployment’s protected secret mechanism or otherwise restrict access to the configuration file. Add the provider names to the relevant single-sign-on and external-provider settings you intend to use, then save the file and apply it:
sudo gitlab-ctl reconfigure
Watch the reconfigure output for syntax or provider initialization errors. A successful reconfigure changes the Rails configuration; it does not prove that an external provider’s redirect URI, scopes or claims are correct, so perform a real login test afterward.
Account-provisioning settings in Omnibus
GitLab’s common OmniAuth controls let you decide:
allow_single_sign_on: which configured providers may create or sign in users through single sign-on.block_auto_created_users: whether accounts created by a provider remain blocked until an administrator approves them. This is the safer default when you need review.auto_link_user: whether a provider identity may be linked to an existing GitLab account, subject to your matching policy.external_providers: which providers create accounts marked as external.- Profile synchronization options: which name, email or other profile attributes are copied from the identity service.
Use the exact setting names and value format supported by your GitLab release. A permissive allowlist combined with automatic account creation can grant access to anyone who can authenticate at the external service; a restrictive allowlist or blocked-account policy gives administrators a review step.
Configure the Helm chart
For GitLab deployed with the Kubernetes Helm chart, OmniAuth values are supplied under global.appConfig.omniauth in the chart’s values. Define one provider object for each external service, including unique names for repeated OIDC or SAML strategies. The chart uses camelCase forms for common controls, such as allowSingleSignOn and blockAutoCreatedUsers.
After updating the values file or your values repository, apply it with the chart’s normal Helm upgrade procedure. The exact command depends on your release name, namespace and chart version; the important operational requirement is that the upgrade renders the new Rails configuration and restarts or refreshes the affected GitLab components. Confirm the rendered values do not expose client secrets in logs or publicly readable manifests.

Configure Docker, source and other installations
Docker deployments commonly provide Omnibus configuration through GITLAB_OMNIBUS_CONFIG. Supply the provider definitions and common OmniAuth settings there, then restart or recreate the container so GitLab reads the new configuration. Source installations use the configuration mechanism documented for that deployment; apply the change and restart the relevant application processes.
Regardless of packaging, the sequence is the same: keep one provider object per external service, protect secrets, apply the supported deployment action, and test every button and callback.
Set up multiple OIDC providers
Multiple OIDC directories require more than copying the same provider block. GitLab’s documented pattern repeats the openid_connect strategy but assigns an explicit strategy_class, a unique provider name and label, and a different issuer or discovery endpoint for each identity service.
# Illustrative structure only; use the current GitLab OIDC arguments
{
'name' => 'openid_connect',
'strategy_class' => 'OmniAuth::Strategies::OpenIDConnect',
'label' => 'Corporate directory',
'args' => {
'name' => 'corporate_oidc',
'issuer' => 'https://id.example.com',
'discovery' => true,
'client_options' => {
'identifier' => 'OIDC_CLIENT_ID',
'secret' => 'OIDC_CLIENT_SECRET'
}
}
},
{
'name' => 'openid_connect',
'strategy_class' => 'OmniAuth::Strategies::OpenIDConnect',
'label' => 'Partner directory',
'args' => {
'name' => 'partner_oidc',
'issuer' => 'https://partners.example.net',
'discovery' => true,
'client_options' => {
'identifier' => 'PARTNER_CLIENT_ID',
'secret' => 'PARTNER_CLIENT_SECRET'
}
}
}
The names, labels and callback routes must remain consistent between GitLab, the identity provider registrations and any allowlists. A mismatch can produce a missing button, an unknown strategy error or a callback that cannot be matched to the initiating provider.
Set up multiple SAML providers
Give each SAML instance a distinct provider name, label and callback. A common pattern uses names such as saml and saml_2. If just-in-time account creation is desired, add both names to the single-sign-on allowlist; allowing one does not automatically allow the other.
Use callback URLs whose path contains the corresponding provider name. Keep the names identical in the provider arguments, allowlist and identity-provider registration. Distinct labels make the login choices understandable to users who belong to more than one organization.

Choose identity and provisioning behavior deliberately
Automatic creation versus approval
Automatic creation is convenient, but it can create GitLab accounts for every person allowed to authenticate at the external service. Set block_auto_created_users (or the chart’s equivalent) when an administrator must approve new accounts before access is granted. Define an operational queue so blocked accounts are reviewed promptly.
Linking to existing accounts
Existing users can link a provider from Profile → Access → Password and authentication. Email-based linking should be enabled only when the email claim is authoritative and verified by the identity service. Otherwise, a reused or unverified address can attach the wrong external identity to a GitLab account.
External status and synchronized attributes
Use the external-provider list when accounts authenticated through a service should be treated as external GitLab users. Decide which profile fields are synchronized. Synchronization can keep names and email addresses current, but it can also overwrite locally managed values; document the source of truth before enabling it.

Username claims
If you configure a custom gitlab_username_claim, select a claim that is unique and stable in that provider. Colliding or frequently changing claims make account identification unreliable and can prevent users from signing in to the intended account.
Apply a controlled test
- Open the GitLab sign-in page in a private browser session and verify that each intended provider button appears with the correct label.
- Test each button with a controlled account from the corresponding identity service. Confirm the browser returns to the intended GitLab host and the expected provider callback path.
- Inspect the resulting GitLab identity: username claim, email, external status, linked provider and approval state.
- Test an existing GitLab user who links a provider from Profile → Access → Password and authentication. Verify that the link does not create a duplicate account.
- Test a user who should be blocked or rejected. Confirm the behavior matches your allowlist and approval policy rather than relying on the appearance of the login button.
- Review GitLab and identity-provider logs for redirect, scope, issuer, claim or state-validation errors. Remove test accounts or revoke test applications when the validation is complete.
Administer providers after deployment
Administrators can selectively enable or disable configured providers under Admin → Settings → General → Sign-in restrictions. Disabling a button changes who can start a new login flow; it does not by itself migrate or delete identities already stored in GitLab.
Maintain a provider-to-user mapping before changing an application, tenant or issuer. GitLab stores extern_uid values, and replacing an external application can produce new identifiers. Existing users may then need coordinated updates through the Users API or Rails console. Perform that work with a tested backup and a rollback plan; do not edit production identities ad hoc.

| Source installation | The installation’s Rails/OmniAuth configuration | Apply the change and restart the relevant application processes | Verify every web and background process uses the same provider configuration. |
Common failures and fixes
The provider button is missing
Check that OmniAuth is enabled, the provider object loaded without syntax errors, the provider name is in the intended allowlist and an administrator has not disabled it under sign-in restrictions. For repeated OIDC or SAML entries, verify the unique name and label are present.
Recommended Free Tools
Redirect URI or callback mismatch
Compare the provider registration character for character with the GitLab callback, including scheme, hostname, port, path and provider name. GitHub specifically requires the full /users/auth/github/callback path. Reverse proxies must preserve the public host and HTTPS scheme that users actually visit.
Unknown strategy or OIDC initialization error
Confirm that the strategy is supported by the GitLab version, that repeated OIDC entries specify the required strategy_class, and that each issuer or discovery endpoint is correct and reachable. Do not use one provider name for two independent OIDC services.
Users are created but cannot enter GitLab
Inspect whether block_auto_created_users is enabled. A blocked account requires administrator approval; this is different from a failed OAuth flow. Also verify that the provider is allowed for single sign-on and that the account’s external status matches your access policy.
A returning user receives a new account or an identity error
Compare the provider name, email claim, username claim and stored extern_uid. This commonly follows an application replacement or a change in issuer. Restore the original application where possible, or perform a planned identity update through the Users API or Rails console.
Login succeeds externally but GitLab rejects the claims
Check requested scopes and returned claims, especially email and the claim selected by gitlab_username_claim. Ensure the username value is unique and stable, and that any synchronized profile field is present in the provider response.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use the complete callback path supplied for each provider; never rely on a host-only redirect URI.
- Store client secrets in protected deployment secrets and restrict configuration-file access.
- Keep a local recovery administrator account before modifying OmniAuth.
- Use separate applications and credentials for separate identity services.
- Choose allowlists, approval blocking and external-user status as an access-control policy, not merely as a way to make buttons appear.
- Use verified email claims for automatic linking and a unique username claim for custom username mapping.
- Document every provider name, label, issuer, callback, scope and user mapping before a migration.
- Re-test all providers after GitLab upgrades, identity-provider changes, proxy changes or certificate rotations.
Decision guide: which combination should you use?
| Requirement | Practical choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Google sign-in | Google OAuth 2.0 strategy, google_oauth2 |
Google application credentials, scopes and exact callback. |
| Developer accounts managed at GitHub | GitHub strategy, github |
OAuth App credentials and full /users/auth/github/callback URI. |
| Two enterprise directories using OIDC | Two uniquely named OIDC entries with explicit strategy class | Distinct issuers or discovery endpoints, labels, claims and callbacks. |
| Two enterprise directories using SAML | Distinct SAML names such as saml and saml_2 |
Matching names in arguments, labels, callbacks and allowlists. |
| Strict onboarding control | Allowlisted providers with auto-created users blocked | Approval workflow and a tested administrator recovery account. |
The reliable pattern is simple: one correctly registered application and one uniquely identified provider object for each external service, followed by an explicit provisioning policy and a controlled test. Treat provider replacement as an identity migration because GitLab’s stored external identifiers may need to change.
