To point several domains at one website, configure two separate layers: create DNS records for every hostname, then tell the web server to accept those hostnames. Apache matches aliases with ServerName and ServerAlias; NGINX lists them in server_name. HTTPS adds a third requirement: the certificate selected for each connection must include every hostname users can enter.
What a domain alias actually requires
A domain alias is an additional hostname that should reach the same site, application, or document root as a primary domain. The alias is not created by a virtual-host file alone. A browser first resolves the hostname through DNS, connects to an IP address, and sends the requested hostname in the HTTP request. The server then chooses a virtual host or server block that matches that name.

|---|---|---|
| DNS | An A or AAAA record for each hostname, or a suitable CNAME where your DNS design permits one | The name resolves elsewhere, does not resolve, or reaches the wrong server |
| HTTP server | Apache ServerName/ServerAlias, or NGINX server_name |
The request reaches a default site, the wrong virtual host, or a server error |
| TLS | A certificate whose names cover every HTTPS hostname | Browser certificate warnings, handshake failures, or the wrong certificate |
| Application | Redirect, URL, cookie, CORS, password-reset, and canonical-URL behavior | Redirect loops, mixed-domain links, rejected cookies, or incorrect canonical tags |
Keep these layers separate while troubleshooting. A correct Apache or NGINX configuration cannot compensate for a missing DNS record, and a correct DNS record cannot make a certificate valid for a hostname that is absent from the certificate.
Choose what aliases should do
Decide the hostname policy before publishing the aliases. There are two sound designs.

Redirect every alias to one canonical hostname
In this design, all aliases accept the request and issue a permanent redirect to one preferred hostname, such as example.com. Use it for an old domain, a spelling variant, a branding change, or any name that exists mainly to consolidate search-engine signals. The canonical host should be consistent in redirects, absolute URLs, cookies, password-reset links, and canonical tags.
Every alias still needs DNS and HTTPS coverage. A browser must be able to establish a secure connection before it can receive the redirect, so adding a redirect does not remove the need for a certificate containing that alias.
Serve the same site on every hostname
This leaves the requested host in the address bar. It can be appropriate when each domain is intentionally public, but the application must be host-aware. Check absolute links, cookie domains, CORS rules, password-reset URLs, and canonical tags so the application does not generate links on one domain while the visitor is using another.
Plan the hostnames before changing the server
Make a complete list of names that users may enter, including the bare domain and its www form where both are intended to work. Include every additional domain and subdomain. The list drives DNS records, server matching, and certificate issuance.
| Hostname category | Example | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Primary name | example.com |
Which name is canonical, if aliases redirect? |
| Common alternate | www.example.com |
Redirect it or serve it directly? |
| Additional domain | example.net |
Does it show the same site or only redirect? |
| Subdomain pattern | shop.example.com |
Is it an exact name or an intentional wildcard? |
Do not add a wildcard merely to avoid listing names. Wildcards are useful for an intentional pattern, but they have defined matching precedence and can hide configuration mistakes. List exact public names whenever the set is known.

Configure DNS for every alias
Create records that reach the server
At your DNS provider, create an A record for each IPv4 hostname and an AAAA record for each IPv6 hostname that the server actually serves. A CNAME can be used where the DNS design allows it, pointing the alias at another hostname that ultimately resolves to the server. The important result is that every public name resolves to the address on which the web server is listening.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DNS entries and web-server aliases are independent. Saving a ServerAlias line does not create a DNS record, and creating a DNS record does not cause Apache or NGINX to recognize the name.
Check DNS before debugging virtual hosts
Use a DNS lookup utility for each hostname and confirm that the returned A and AAAA values are the intended server addresses. Test both the bare domain and every www, regional, or secondary-domain name you plan to publish. If a hostname resolves to an old server, a parking service, or no address, fix DNS first; web-server changes cannot affect that response.
Set up aliases in Apache
1. Add the port 80 virtual host
Open the site’s Apache virtual-host configuration and put the canonical host in ServerName. Put every alternate hostname in the same block’s ServerAlias directive. A single directive can contain several space-separated names.
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com example.net www.example.net
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
</VirtualHost>
The example makes all four names eligible for the same document root on port 80. Keep unrelated sites in their own virtual-host blocks rather than adding their names here.

2. Enable the site and reload Apache
Use your operating system’s site-enabling mechanism if the distribution provides one, then reload Apache so it reads the edited configuration. A reload applies the change without unnecessarily stopping existing workers. If the reload reports a syntax error, correct that error before continuing.
3. Inspect Apache’s parsed virtual hosts
Run apachectl -S. Its output shows the virtual hosts Apache parsed, the address and port they use, and the names associated with each one. Confirm that every alias appears under the intended *:80 block and that another site has not claimed the same name.
4. Add a matching HTTPS virtual host
HTTPS is selected independently from HTTP. Create a *:443 virtual host for the same names and configure the certificate and key used by your deployment. The certificate must contain example.com, www.example.com, example.net, and www.example.net if all four names can appear in a browser address bar.
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com example.net www.example.net
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
SSLEngine on
SSLCertificateFile /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem
SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem
</VirtualHost>
The certificate file paths in this example are illustrative; use the files installed by your certificate-management process. If aliases should redirect to the canonical host, make the port 80 and port 443 behavior consistent with that policy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why Apache can show the wrong site
Apache compares the requested hostname with ServerName and ServerAlias for the matching address and port. If no name matches, Apache uses the first listed virtual host for that address and port. Consequently, a missing alias or a typo can look like a DNS problem even when DNS is correct: the request reaches the server but is handled by the default or first virtual host. Keep an explicit, deliberate default strategy and do not rely on accidental file order.

Set up aliases in NGINX
1. Add all exact names to one server block
Create or edit the NGINX block that serves the site and list the hostnames after server_name. Separate names with spaces.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com example.net www.example.net;
root /var/www/example;
}
All listed names now select this block on port 80. The root shown is an example document root; retain the path and application directives used by your deployment.
2. Use wildcards only for intentional patterns
NGINX supports exact names, wildcard names, and regular-expression names. A pattern such as *.example.com is appropriate only when every matching subdomain should follow the same policy. It does not replace explicit names accidentally omitted from the configuration, and NGINX’s matching precedence determines which block wins when patterns overlap.
3. Add the HTTPS server block
Create the port 443 block with the same public names and configure ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key using the TLS syntax supported by your current deployment.
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name example.com www.example.com example.net www.example.net;
root /var/www/example;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
}
NGINX can have many server directives in the http context. Their listen address and port, names, and TLS settings determine which block handles a request.

4. Validate and reload NGINX
Run the configuration syntax test used by your installation (commonly nginx -t). Reload NGINX only after the test succeeds. Then repeat the test for each hostname over both HTTP and HTTPS, rather than assuming that one successful name proves the aliases work.
Make HTTPS work for every alias
Certificate names must match the address bar
The certificate selected during an HTTPS connection must cover the exact hostname the visitor requested. A multi-name certificate can list separate domains, so one certificate can cover names from more than one domain. If a name is absent, browsers can warn even when the request eventually reaches the correct virtual host.
Understand wildcard certificate limits
| Certificate name | Covers | Does not cover |
|---|---|---|
*.example.com |
One subdomain level, such as www.example.com |
The bare example.com or a deeper name such as a.b.example.com |
example.com |
The exact bare domain | www.example.com unless that name is also listed |
| A multi-name certificate listing several names | Each hostname explicitly listed | Any alias omitted from the certificate |
SNI selects among HTTPS virtual servers
Server Name Indication (SNI) allows multiple HTTPS virtual servers to share one IP address. The client supplies the requested name during the TLS handshake; the server uses it to select a certificate and virtual server, then the HTTP Host header is used for request routing. A correct SNI configuration still requires matching names in the TLS virtual host and a certificate that covers them.
Validate the complete setup
- Check DNS: Look up every alias and verify that its A and AAAA results point to the intended server.
- Inspect the parsed server configuration: Run
apachectl -Sfor Apache, or the NGINX syntax test and configuration inspection process used by your installation. - Test HTTP host matching: Request each hostname and confirm that the expected site responds. When testing directly against a shared IP, send the intended
Hostheader so you test the same name-based selection a browser uses. - Test HTTPS by name: Visit each hostname over HTTPS and confirm that the certificate presented contains that exact name and that the expected virtual host responds.
- Check both redirect paths: If aliases redirect, test an HTTP request and an HTTPS request for every alias. Confirm that each reaches the one canonical URL without cycling between names.
- Review logs: Access and error logs can reveal unmatched hosts, unexpected default-server responses, redirect loops, and application-generated links containing the wrong domain.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The alias does not resolve | No DNS record, an incorrect address, or an unintended CNAME target | Look up the hostname and correct its A, AAAA, or permitted CNAME record before changing the server. |
| The alias shows another website | The hostname is not listed in the intended block, or it reached the first/default virtual host | Check spelling, port, ServerAlias/server_name, and Apache’s apachectl -S output or NGINX name matching. |
| HTTP works but HTTPS warns | The certificate does not contain the requested alias, or the TLS block selects the wrong certificate | Inspect certificate names, the port 443 block, and SNI behavior for that hostname. |
| Only a deeper subdomain fails with a wildcard | The wildcard certificate or server wildcard has only one-level scope | Use an exact name or an appropriate certificate; *.example.com does not cover a.b.example.com. |
| Requests bounce between domains | Redirect rules disagree about the canonical host or the application builds absolute URLs on another domain | Trace each HTTP and HTTPS redirect and align server policy with application-generated links and canonical tags. |
| The site loads but links or password resets use another domain | The application was not designed for multiple public hosts | Review absolute URLs, cookies, CORS, password-reset links, and canonical tags before serving every alias independently. |
| A configuration edit has no effect | The file was not enabled, the service was not reloaded, or a syntax error prevented the reload | Validate the parsed configuration, correct errors, and reload the service again. |
Operational checklist
- List every hostname that may appear in a browser address bar.
- Create and verify DNS records for each name.
- Choose either canonical redirects or intentional multi-host serving.
- For Apache, set one
ServerNameand all alternates inServerAlias. - For NGINX, list all exact names in
server_nameand use wildcards only deliberately. - Configure separate HTTP and HTTPS listeners or blocks as required by the server.
- Install a certificate covering every HTTPS hostname, including the bare domain when a wildcard is used.
- Validate the configuration, reload the service, and inspect the parsed virtual hosts.
- Test each name with its intended
Hostheader and over HTTPS with SNI. - Read access and error logs for default-host responses, certificate selection problems, loops, and wrong-domain links.
Key distinction to remember
Multiple domain aliases are reliable when DNS, host matching, TLS, and application behavior agree. DNS gets the request to the server; Apache or NGINX chooses the site; SNI and the certificate secure the requested name; and the application determines whether that name redirects or remains visible. Treating those as separate checks prevents the most common “wrong virtual host” and “HTTPS works for only one domain” problems.
