On a supported Ubuntu or Debian server, the reliable native setup is to add the signed mod_pagespeed package repository, install mod-pagespeed, restart Apache, and verify the module with its response header and cache behavior. The package enables the Apache module, installs pagespeed.conf, and connects the module to its optimizer worker, so you do not configure that worker as a separate Apache service.
What mod_pagespeed does in an Apache installation
mod_pagespeed 2.1 is split into two cooperating parts: a module that runs inside the web server and an optimizer worker that performs heavier processing beside it. Apache receives the request through the module; the worker processes eligible resources and the module serves optimized output and cached results. The packaged installation supplies the connection between those components.

The package provides the module, its default configuration, and the worker wiring in one installation. You still decide whether optimization is enabled globally or limited to a virtual host, directory, or URL location.
The package is an Apache integration. An nginx deployment or a reverse-proxy design uses a different integration path and should not be mixed with the native Apache instructions below. Official documentation does not publish a performance percentage that proves one deployment model is faster than another, so choose based on your existing web-server architecture and operational requirements rather than an assumed benchmark.

Supported releases and prerequisites
The current signed-package support matrix covers Debian 12 and Debian 13, and Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04, with Apache 2.4 or newer. A different distribution or an older Apache release is outside that stated baseline; do not assume that the repository package will work there without checking the project’s current compatibility information.

apache2 -vCheck that the output identifies one of the supported Debian or Ubuntu releases and Apache 2.4 or later. Also identify the filesystem that will hold the file cache. The exact default path can vary with the package and system layout; what matters is that the path configured in pagespeed.conf exists and is writable by the account under which Apache operates.
Install the signed package
The official installation script configures the apt source and signing key for the mod_pagespeed repository. Run it as a normal administrative setup command, then install the package with apt:

Restart Apache so the newly installed module and configuration are loaded:
sudo systemctl restart apache2A successful systemd restart means Apache accepted the configuration. It does not, by itself, prove that a page was optimized, so perform the response checks in the verification section.
If the repository script reports an unsupported release, stop rather than forcing a package from another distribution. Mixing package repositories can leave Apache with incompatible libraries or an untrusted signing configuration.
Review pagespeed.conf before serving traffic
Open the package file:
sudo editor /etc/apache2/mods-available/pagespeed.confThe minimum working Apache configuration consists of ModPagespeed on and a writable ModPagespeedFileCachePath. The packaged file already sets both. Confirm them explicitly after installation:

grep -E '^[[:space:]]*ModPagespeed(On|FileCachePath)' /etc/apache2/mods-available/pagespeed.confThe first setting turns processing on. The second tells the module where to persist optimized files and cache metadata. If you change the cache path, create the directory first and assign ownership and permissions that allow the Apache process to write there while preventing unrelated users from modifying it. A read-only, missing, or incorrectly permissioned path can make optimization fail even when Apache itself starts normally.
Keep package-managed defaults in mind when editing. A local configuration include or a virtual-host override is easier to audit during package upgrades than extensive changes to a vendor file. After any edit, validate the complete Apache configuration and restart only after it parses successfully:

sudo apache2ctl configtest
sudo systemctl restart apache2The expected result from configtest is Syntax OK. If it reports an unknown directive, a malformed context, or a path error, fix that message before restarting.
Choose the right configuration scope
Apache directives can be global or limited to a specific part of the request space. Use the narrowest scope that matches your goal:

For example, to disable processing for a sensitive URL area, place the directive in the relevant Apache context:

ModPagespeed off
</Location>The same ModPagespeed off directive can be scoped inside a <Directory> block when the exception is tied to a filesystem directory. Do not put a URL-oriented exception in a directory block merely because the names look similar; Apache evaluates those contexts differently.
Use exceptions for paths that must retain byte-for-byte output, contain generated responses that should not be cached, or are used for administration and diagnostics. Keep the broad default in the package file and document every local override so a later administrator can understand why it exists.
Do you need to configure the optimizer worker separately?
No separate worker installation or Apache proxy stanza is required for the native package path. The package includes the configuration that points the module at the optimizer worker. That is why the standard procedure is repository setup, apt-get install mod-pagespeed, and an Apache restart rather than a second manually managed daemon.

You should still verify that the packaged configuration was installed and loaded. Check the module configuration file, inspect Apache’s loaded-module list, and review the service journal if the restart fails:
sudo apache2ctl -M | grep -i pagespeed
sudo systemctl status apache2 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u apache2 -b --no-pagerThe first command should show the pagespeed module among Apache’s loaded modules. A missing module entry, a failed service restart, or worker-related errors in the journal indicate an installation or configuration problem rather than a page-level optimization issue.
Verify that mod_pagespeed is working
Verification should test both loading and request processing. Use a representative page from the virtual host you intend to optimize, and perform the checks from a client that reaches that host directly.
1. Check the response header
Request the page headers and look for X-Mod-Pagespeed:
curl -I https://example.test/A response containing X-Mod-Pagespeed identifies a response handled by the module. If the header is absent, confirm that the request reached the expected Apache instance, that the virtual host is using the package configuration, and that an upstream proxy or cache did not replace the response headers.
2. Observe a cache MISS followed by a HIT
Request the same cacheable URL twice. The first request may generate the optimized representation and report a cache MISS; a subsequent request can report a cache HIT after the generated result is available. The exact header formatting depends on the installed version and response path, so use the sequence as a behavioral check rather than relying on one fixed header string.

curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null https://example.test/If both requests remain misses, check whether the response is cacheable, whether the cache directory is writable, and whether another layer is bypassing or purging the cache. A miss is not proof that the module is disabled; an uncacheable response or a newly changed resource can legitimately require processing again.
3. Compare with PageSpeed disabled for one request
Append ?PageSpeed=off to a test URL:
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null 'https://example.test/?PageSpeed=off'Use that response as a controlled comparison with the normal URL. It helps distinguish origin output from the module’s transformed output without changing the server-wide setting. Do not use the query parameter as a permanent production policy; configure a scoped exception when a path should always bypass optimization.

4. Inspect the global admin page and worker health
Use /pagespeed_global_admin on the configured host to inspect module status, cache information, and diagnostic data. The admin interface also exposes the worker health check used to determine whether the optimizer is responding. Protect administrative locations with the same access controls you apply to other server diagnostics, and do not expose them publicly without a deliberate access policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
Apache will not restart
- Run
sudo apache2ctl configtestand fix the first syntax error reported. - Check that every pagespeed directive is placed in a context Apache accepts and that XML-style block tags are balanced.
- Read
sudo journalctl -u apache2 -b --no-pagerfor the exact file and line that failed. - If you changed the cache path, confirm that the directory exists and that Apache can traverse and write it.
The module is not listed as loaded
- Confirm that
mod-pagespeedfinished installing without an apt error. - Inspect
/etc/apache2/mods-available/pagespeed.confand verify that the package configuration is present. - Run
sudo apache2ctl -M | grep -i pagespeedafter restarting Apache. - Verify that the request is reaching this Apache server rather than a different backend or proxy.
The header is missing but Apache is running
- Check that
ModPagespeed onis effective in the virtual host serving the request. - Look for a more specific
ModPagespeed offrule in a<Location>,<Directory>, virtual-host, or.htaccesscontext. - Compare a direct origin request with the public URL to identify an intermediary that strips or replaces headers.
- Use
/pagespeed_global_adminand the worker health check to determine whether the optimizer is available.
The cache never becomes a HIT
- Confirm that the cache directory is writable by Apache and has sufficient free space.
- Request the exact same URL twice; query strings, cookies, authorization, and changing response headers can produce different cache keys or prevent reuse.
- Check whether the response is intentionally marked uncacheable by the application or another Apache rule.
- Use the
?PageSpeed=offcomparison only as a diagnostic and remove it from normal requests.
A path must not be optimized
Add ModPagespeed off in the narrowest matching context, such as a <Location> block for a URL endpoint or a <Directory> block for a filesystem tree. Run apache2ctl configtest, restart Apache, and retest that path while leaving unrelated virtual hosts enabled.
Apache native module versus other deployment designs
The native package is not the only possible architecture, but each alternative changes the operational boundary. The official material does not provide a benchmark that justifies a universal speed winner.

Choose the native module when Apache is already the request-serving layer and the server fits the supported release matrix. Choose another design only when your existing architecture requires it, and validate that design against its own current documentation.
